Consumer Sentiment Unexpectedly Slips in February
— Purple Avenger

The public apparently has a much better grasp of our situation than the media.

U.S. consumer sentiment slipped in early February, with high unemployment expected to continue and with most looking for no gain in income or home values in the year ahead, a survey released Friday showed.
Of course this "unexpected" result would have nothing to do with Obama walking back his tax promises, the reviled ObamaCare remaining un-dead rather than staying dead-dead, or the looming prospects of a "Jobs Bill" that apparently creates no jobs, but will cost a shitload of money. None of those things could possibly have any effect on consumer confidence, so this truly is a real fracking puzzler.

66 Like Osama Bin Laden, Obamacare **IS** dead, its just we have a political situation where the lefties who were pushing it don't want to say so explicitly, for fear of alienating their money-donating base during election season.

So long as there is a perception amongst the faithful that there is still hope, the Democrat elected won't have to face the political fallout of dropping the ball on this with Congressional Democrat supermajorities.   So they're still "working on it" even though there remains no politically viable way to reconcile the passed Senate and House bills.  Better for them to maintain the (false) impression that they're doing "something" rather than create the (true) impression that there really isn't anything left they can do other than start again from square one.

The President has so much of his personal prestige invested in Obamacare (how many times did he appear on TV hawking this piece of sh#t?) that he doesn't want to admit its dead either.

I agree that's what's keeping Obama's poll ratings where they are. This dovetails with my prediction that Obama's going to grab onto the "civil rights" liferaft.

Given that, and given the economy, the government has no choice but to scare those still employed with a loss of their status. I foresee a rise in "diversity" seminars, and in their shrillness, across the too-big-to-fail businesses and government employment.

In other words, I see a sharp rise in racial resentment across all races; but it won't be expressed in public. And Obama's ratings will find a temporary shelf at 45%.

I don't expect this to last, however. It just means the collapse will be that much more ugly.

I don't understand how much more evidence the American people need to determine that these people in the government and on the left are straight up Commies.

Oh yeah, I forgot, 52% of the population still believe in UniCorns.

We're so screwed!

105 Radio news just informed me that retail sales were up .5% in January.  Is that good?  Is there a retail tax receipt figure that would tell me whether anyone made any money on these sales, or whether retail sales went up due to price/profit slashing?

the polls are truely underreporting Obama's problems ...  Does anyone not on some sort of drug actually believe that in the privacy of a voting booth today 45% of America would still vote for this clown ?

And yet he's "Full Steam Ahead" ...

If the day comes that we actually get to see Obama's grades at Occidental and Harvard I'm willing to bet that he was a B student at best and his course selection was a joke.

Obama's always been a "player" and his substance is window pane thin ...  he is simply not a hard worker and frankly not very bright ...  he floats like a butterfly and apparently stings like one too ...

Not that these things wouldn't certainly play a role (Obama's poll numbers are evidence enough of this), but I think the continued high unemployment, coupled with the bills coming due from Christmas are the driving factors of what's dragging these numbers down.

I'm actually keeping my fingers crossed that people are starting to get off the denial train that the party is over and are beginning to realize that the normal "business cycle" isn't going to fix this economy.  Confronting the reality of the situation is something most Americans don't want to do right now, but a consistently high U3/U6 isn't letting them nurture whatever delusions of "recovery" they might be holding.

Only a massive deleveraging across all sectors is going to help stabilize the economy, but because that would result in massive deflation as well, Helicopter Ben is doing everything he can to prevent it from happening.  Hence, the DJIA hovering around 10K when it shouldn't have gone above 7500 for the last ten months.

“Unexpectedly”.

As in “The unemployment rate was unexpectedly worse this month, said economists. Just like last month. And the month before. And the month before that. And…”

When something does the same thing every month for a year, why is that “unexpected”? Sure, you hope it will get better–unless you’re a Cloward-Pivenist–but why the surprise if it doesn’t?

Hit it, Nat:

“Unexpectedly

ThatÂ’s what you are

Unexpectedly

CanÂ’t count that far

“Saved or Created” is so risible

Your job growth, it is invisible

I think youÂ’ll be unemployed

Unexpectedly too-ooo!”

The meme at ZeroHedge is "GOLD, bitches!" It's become a joke over there too by now.
