Contact Departure, Adios Amigo!
— Dave in Texas

Well.

Fox News 25 Boston reveals a recording of a kid giving flight instructions from the tower at JFK. Audio at the link.

I mean, a really cute kid, from the sound of the voice. You can hear a few laughs in the background, and the pilots interacting with him in a nice way and all.

I'm not condoning it. Flight traffic control falls into that category of "kind of a big deal". I think the adults were watching, and all that. Not a good idea for "take my kid to work day", still I'm not inclined to throw a shit fit either.

He pretty much had me at "adios amigo!"

In a related story (can't recall who tipped me on this, I'm sorry), Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger is moving on to retirement.

All the best sir.

1 What does it say that I feel better about the kid in the control tower than I do about you-know-who writing health care legislation?

2 I'm with you, flight control is a big deal and all.  But from everything I've heard, it sounds like the grownups were right there and all.  Best idea ever?  No.  OMG ELEVENTY?  Not so much.

Rush had it right, if it was a little girl whose Daddy took her into work, this would be an adorable human interest story.

Posted by: alexthechick at March 03, 2010 11:46 AM (8WZWv)

3 Rush played the clip of the kid earlier.  He was saying something to the effect that the kid sounded more professional and qualified to be in that control tower than the jackass we currently have in the Oval Office.

We sure it isn't a cost-cutting measure by the FAA?

6 I agree. Not the best idea, and the Dad should get some reprimand for bad judgement...but c'mon. It's obvious he just let his son say a few words (that he was told) into a microphone. Un-bunch your underwear, people.

10 I don't think letting the kid say a few words is that big of a deal, it was never going to endanger anyone. The problem is it shows how idiotic these guys are to not realize the storm it would create. They know every word they say is recorded and that there are ATC nerds out there listening in. They had to know this would get out and that they would be killed for it.

I'd say fire them not for endangering anyone or even breaking rules but just for being idiots with zero common sense.

17 I'm pretty sure it was a boy by the voice.

Regardless, I'm so not offended. He gave the instructions clearly and adults were standing by to take over.

Great idea? Probably not. Others like Ed Morrissey who's afraid of flying would take offense. And it's probably a violation of regulations, albeit harmless in this case.

Still, repeat 10,000 times with 10,000 kids and I expect to see a negative result requiring an adult to step in tout de suite.

On another topic, I agree with the White House on this one:

I'm not saying these lawyers were the best, or even good, picks. I know nothing about them. But to rhetorically call someone a member of Al Qaeda, in essence, because they did their duty as a lawyer and represented a client's interests is a bit much.

Or are we now going to call lawyers murderers, child rapists, and parking bylaw violators based on what their clients have done?

Posted by: sharrukin at March 03, 2010 12:02 PM (593B8)

26 Another thing to keep in mind...the kid gave very basic instructions that the pilot knew was coming, very basic stuff (take off, contact departure, etc). The real stuff like the "position and hold" instruction and the take off with with the wind numbers, the controller gave himself. The guy was showing some judgment about letting the kid do it and not just fucking around.

Again, absolutely zero danger but at the same time absolutely zero forethought.

28 When we lived in Chicagoland, there was a really funny guy on the radio, Kevin Matthews.  He was "reminiscing" one day about how you used to sit in the airport lounge and smoke and get liquored up with the pilots before a flight.  An exaggeration, of course, but still....

Posted by: wherestherum at March 03, 2010 12:09 PM (gofDd)

30 wherestherum, hell, we didn't have seatbelts when I was little.  I remember lying in the back window and Dad slamming of the brakes in traffic and getting thrown halfway through the car.  Did we whine and cry?  Hell, no.  Moved from that to standing up on the front seat.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at March 03, 2010 12:12 PM (UOM48)

31 lol, Jane, my parents have the same kind of memories. Sliding across the seats at turns and flying forward at stops. And they still managed to live to adulthood!

Posted by: wherestherum at March 03, 2010 12:13 PM (gofDd)

32 Preface: my wife works in ATC, and ATC facilities are really cool and fun places to sit back and watch.

As noted before, the grownups were in charge, and the kid gave clearly-stated, correct orders that a grownup clearly told him to do. The pilots obviously loved it and no harm was done.

And in today's hyper-sensitized media world, people lost their fucking minds over it. Someone will likely be wink-wink suspended over it because now the sups have to step in and act like they're doing something, and it was poor forethought from an ATC crew that might have (God forbid) been having a good time at work that day- extremely uncommon in a lot of towers.

Probably won't happen again, and now we're going to have a whole bunch of new regulations dumped on the ATC crews because of it. Typical FAA spasmodic reaction.

34 "What law required them to seek out these terrorists and represent them? Were they court appointed?"

So when suddenly did you become a socialist and believe that only if the government orders a private citizen to take a piece of work, for money, that they should do so?

People have a right to representation and the American courts can judge whether they do or don't have jurisdiction, or whether a military tribunal is appropriate, etc., etc.

Then the people involved can be executed or imprisoned or indefinitely detained as an enemy combatant.

But a lawyer representing such a person does not automatically become a traitor and a member of that person's terrorist organization, and subsequently ineligible to work for the Department of Justice.

It was an overwrought, ridiculous attack, and serves to discredit conservatives in the eyes of people who are inclined to support them. It was mostly the title, "The Al-Qaeda 7".

That's ridiculous.

If one wanted to post an ad saying where are the DoJ's priorities, etc., fine. But to call these lawyers Al-Qaeda members without proof is nuts.

My brother just enlisted in the Marines. This reminds me of part of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" explanation his recruiter gave him.

Recruiter: If you had sex with a man, would you tell anyone about it?

Brother: No.

Recruiter: OK, now if you had sex with two women, would you tell anyone about that?

Brother: Hell yes I would.

Recruiter: No, you would not as you would be participating in a homosexual act (the two women) and could be charged with violating DADT. Now, someone would really have to have it in for you, but this just happened last year and what cemented it for the guy was the pictures he took. So, bottom line, if you have sex with two women do not take pictures.

72 Rut roh.  Just up on Fox:  The air controller and his supervisor on "leave" for letting the controller's son and another kid on the air.  Apparently, no children, or family members are allowed in the control tower.  Olympia Snow wants congressional hearings.  Give me a damned break.

Posted by: Vic at March 03, 2010 02:30 PM (QrA9E)

74 What's the big deal?    It's not like hundreds of lives were potentially at stake.

There was a Russian commercial pilot several years ago let his kid into the cockpit and let him fly the plane.  They crashed and all aboard were killed.  They only found out what had happened because of the voice recorders in the cockpit.

Posted by: Kasper Hauser at March 03, 2010 02:35 PM (KeOQp)

75 BTW-- The Flight Control room is also a secured environment and no-one who is unauthorized is allowed in.  A kid can only be allowed in with prior written permission from the FAA.

And this is the busiest air control center in the U.S.

And 40-50% of air crashes involve distracted controllers who make a mistake.

So this is actually a very big f*king deal....no matte how cute the kids sounds.

Posted by: Kasper Hauser at March 03, 2010 02:40 PM (KeOQp)

76 And all of you who think it is no big deal clearly have never (and likely will never) breed.

When a kid is around you CANNOT concentrate correctly on what you are supposed to be doing....

The "Morons" label has never been so apt.

Posted by: Kasper Hauser at March 03, 2010 02:43 PM (KeOQp)

77 I don't think letting the kid say a few words is that big of a deal, it was never going to endanger anyone.

Having the kid in the tower was illegal and endangered people.   Flight controllers need to have their full concentration on what they are doing.....

Plus, if they break these rules, what other rules will they break?

The controller and the supervisor should be fired.

Posted by: Kasper Hauser at March 03, 2010 02:59 PM (KeOQp)

78 Technically this is no different than having a "newbie" on his first day as a controller.  The supervisor or trainer is there with the ability to override his microphone if he does something that would endanger safety.  And this was simply a frequency change, which is mostly a non-event, since most experienced pilots know when and where they are going to get it.  Also, there are times when a controller might be too busy to tell you to switch, so you simply change over on your own.  It's more important to be talking to departure once you're out of the airport traffic area, anyway.

A behind the scenes admonishment, and let it go.  A congressional hearing?  Waste of time and money.

80 Technically this is no different than having a "newbie" on his first day as a controller.  The supervisor or trainer is there with the ability to override his microphone if he does something that would endanger safety.

You clearly don't have kids, don't know kids and, given that controllers are gorwn=ups have many months of training BEFORE even entering the tower, it is hardly equivalent.

82 @Kasper Hauser:  Wow, did I strike a nerve or something?

Actually, I do have kids.  Three beautiful and smart high school daughters.  I also know kids, having been a volunteer coach for the past ten years.  I am also currently an airline pilot and have been flying for over 30 years.  I know from experience everything I posted in my last comment.  It is not unusual for a new or even not so new guy to make a mistake on the job, and to be overridden by someone in charge of him.  That is a fact, my friend.

And judging by your response to my post, you have some serious issues.

da hawk, three daughters?  Oh my, we need to talk..

I have two, all growed up, 19 and 23 this moment, but the next few months will advance that.

They are my joy, and kindness in this world.

Posted by: Dave in Texas at March 03, 2010 03:29 PM (Wh0W+)

84 What airline do you fly for?  I'd like to avoid it.  I'd rather have a pilot that understood the importance of rules and procedures and protocols when large numbers of human lives are on the line.  I'd rather not have someone who feels comfortable cutting corners in order to amuse his kids.

I know all captains can't be like Sully, but I don't believe you are really a pilot.   I know several pilots and not of them are so cavalier or unprofessional about the safety of their passengers.

I also don't believe you  have daughters because I don't believe you are any older than 19.

I do agree about the Congressional hearings......  That is stupid.  Fire them and be done with it.

85 This is the non-est non-issue ever. The only thing the kid did differently from regular JFK ATC is that he didn't speak so fast that you had to ask for a slow repeat.

Posted by: Hidden Imam at March 03, 2010 03:36 PM (9fjyr)

86 All the Russian kid did differently was accidentally disengage the autopilot sending the jet to the ground in and uncontrolled dive killing everyone on board.  He was also under the control of a seasoned adult who could override him if necessary.

I was in a plane that was backed into a fuel tanker just last year because the person directing the ground crew was momentarily distracted. Although the tanker was pretty badly crushed, no fuels spilled,,,,but I don't want to go through it again.

87 @dave in texas:

It's funny, because people ask me all the time what it's like having three girls, and I tell them I couldn't imagine not having them.  What part of Texas are you from, because I fly occasionally from DFW.  Love Texas, although I live in California.  Went to basic training there in 1976.  The thing I got the biggest kick out of was when a fellow pilot and I went to the big Bass Pro Outlet in Grapevine and they had all of the guns AND the ammo laid out in the aisles.  So different here, where they don't store guns and ammo within 70 miles of each other!

My girls are 17 (soon to be 1 , 16 (soon to be 17) and 15 (just turned).

@Kasper

I'm working on getting my ATP right now and I have to back up da hawk 100%.

The controller's attention was on directing traffic, and then had his kid give the most meaningless radio calls of all "Contact Departure," "Cleared for takeoff." Calls the pilots were expecting. At a busy airport i'm hanging over the Mic waiting for my callsign and "cleared for takeoff" Radio calls in the ATC environment are more about choreography than communication. We pilots just wait to hear the magic words, regardless of who said them.

No one was in danger.

If the kid accidentally disengaged the autopilot then he wasn't under the control of anyone. My dad used to let me sit in his lap and hold the control yolk when I was a tike. No, it's not good policy but it provided some sweet memories and helped inspire a lifelong love of flying.

Yes, you have your mind right and yes, you are stating what needs to be stated, that said, that kid might grow up to be one hell of an Air traffic controller.

Posted by: cashin

Honestly friend, you may want to rethink that. You may one day act on what you were expecting to hear (because that's the way the routine is usually "choreographed") rather than what you heard.

Posted by: Hidden Imam at March 03, 2010 04:14 PM (9fjyr)

91 Kasper, Kasper, Kasper.

Calm down, my man.  I can assure you that I am a very disciplined and professional pilot.  11 years of military flying instilled that initially, and that has carried over into my commercial flying as well.  When I fly, I try to make it as safe and comfortable for my passengers by being smooth with the controls and staying ahead of the airplane.  It also manifests itself in my driving, e.g., I always wear my seat belt no matter what distance I'm driving and I use my turn signals even when it's 3 a.m. and nobody else is on the road.  There's an old saying that goes "there are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots.  What that means is that one doesn't become an old pilot by cutting corners or being careless.  I fly with the knowledge that not only are my passengers' lives on the line, but mine as well.  I don't have a death wish, and I want to live to be a grandfather to my three girls (who are very real, indeed).

Now, comparing putting a child in the seat of a jet that is airborne to that of letting a child say the words that you are going to be saying anyway is the ultimate stretch.  You'll notice that none of the pilots involved were upset to hear his voice telling them to switch frequencies, and I doubt there would be any that would.  It's a frequency change instruction that we already know is coming...that's why they call it a Standard Instrument Departure (SID)...the departure is flown the same way every time, although the controller can amend it as necessary for a specific flight or situation as need be.

@Hidden Imam

I whole heartedly agree. I'm just trying to make a point. I mean am I wrong about this whole ordeal being choreographed? It's a constant dance getting planes in and out, you seem to know much about the ATC system you probably know all about it. It's just about waiting for which way ATC will "lead" you.

Jetblue is waiting for a takeoff clearance, they get a takeoff clearance, it just happens to be from the controller's kid and not the controller. No lives were in danger at all, as you said, most "non-est non-issue ever."

Posted by: cashin at March 03, 2010 04:28 PM (RJ9mi)

93 @Hidden Imam

That's a good point, and one that we train to avoid.  That's the main reason we read back all instructions from ATC, so as to avoid any misunderstanding.

95 The aircraft he spoke with were fully aware of what was happening.  The pilots were pre-briefed.  His dad was right there and it was all pre scripted and supervised.

96 You'll notice that none of the pilots involved were upset to hear his voice telling them to switch frequencies, THAT's BECAUSE WE DON'T HEAR FROM THE ONES WHO DIED!!!!! (Hey, I've had my evening wine.......Still think you're wrong, but at this point I'm quoting "Airplane".... "They bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into.....I say..Let 'em crash!"

97 @dave

Thanks for the offer.  I might be back in Dallas the end of April.  I'll keep you posted.

@kasper

No hard feelings, my friend.  One last point:  if you read the transcript of the boy's communications, this is what he said:  "Jet Blue 171 contact departure."  You'll notice that he didn't give a specific frequency.  That's because we all already know what the frequency is.  We have it set before we even take off.  And you can hear the father in the background coaching him...he is definitely not distracted.  I would have a bigger problem with this if he were there by himself, or if he were giving heading corrections or clearance to land.  You couldn't get more mundane than a switch to departure call.  Have a good night.  Seriously.

101 I'm not condoning it. Flight traffic control falls into that category of "kind of a big deal". I think the adults were watching, and all that. Not a good idea for "take my kid to work day", still I'm not inclined to throw a shit fit either. I disagree...it is a big deal, especially if it's a crowded sector. Bad things happen when you let kids mess around with the operation of planes, either as ATC or pilot: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroflot_Flight_593

Posted by: cheshirecat at March 03, 2010 06:37 PM (ryljC)

102 Having the kid in the tower was illegal and endangered people. Flight controllers need to have their full concentration on what they are doing..... I wanted to expand on that...this isn't some podunk tower in bum-fuck Iowa, you know, this is J. F'ing K. The BUSIEST tower in the United States. This is airspace that serves THREE major airports within a ten-mile radius, not to mention several smaller ports (Teterboro). TRACON ATCs here make $100,000 a year, burn out faster than any other. Watch "Pushing Tin", which has it's basis on real events at NY TRACON to see what they have to deal with. There should be no fucking unauthorised person EVER in the tower! I'm sorry to disagree with some people here on this, but when an ATC has to squeeze 20-30 departures in a hour, through a narrow departure coridor, which also crosses paths with SIDs from EWR and LaGuardia...I shudder to think what would happen if there is a slight miscommunication...

104 I know all captains can't be like Sully, but I don't believe you are really a pilot. I know several pilots and not of them are so cavalier or unprofessional about the safety of their passengers. I'm not a pilot either (except a Sim Pilot), but even I know that the NY corridor is some of the most crowded airspace around. As I said above, THREE MAJOR AIRPORTS in this Class B space...and the weather conditions can turn the routine into a nightmare in a blink. It's happened many times before here. Especially on Canarsie approaches.

105 And here's what can happen when you think it's a light load day: http://gothamist.com/2009/08/28/ntsb_controller_should_have_warned.php

Posted by: cheshirecat at March 03, 2010 06:56 PM (ryljC)

106 that's why they call it a Standard Instrument Departure (SID) I imagine pilots out of JFK often have their SIDs changed due to traffic and weather conditions.

Posted by: cheshirecat at March 03, 2010 06:58 PM (ryljC)

107 The kid was doing the ATC equivalent of waving goodbye to the plane from the window. People are blowing this way out of proportion.

110 I think this was all a test to see whether life was worth living anymore.

Probably better to have not known.

I once flew a plane in Mexico with no license, when I was 12. Clearly the ENTIRE POPULATION of Mexico is lucky to be alive.

Yeah, ATC is serious business, but I want to see some evidence that the situation was in fact out of control other than third parties being scared of children.

There was one correction of a mistake made in that audio, and it wasn't the kid that made the mistake.

Posted by: Merovign, Strong on His Mountain at March 03, 2010 08:58 PM (bxiXv)

111 I'm a private pilot and work as a flight dispatcher for a major airline.  I agree that this has probably been overblown and there's no evidence of any danger to air traffic, but this is an idea better suited for a podunk airport than JFK.  Knowing how to fuel flights going into New York airspace is already tough enough for dispatchers because of the frequency of unexpected holds without bringing kids into the equation.

discount ghd

discount ghd is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy

cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the

imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep

springs of life.

discount ghd means a temperamental predominance of courage over

timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often

exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old

merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the

soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to

dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every being¡¯s heart the lure of

wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what¡¯s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless

station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage

and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, cheap ghd straighteners and your spirit is covered with snows of

cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at

twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism,

there is hope you may die young at eighty.

just a little pink ghd hair straighteners cheap  bit wiser
just a little less needy

just a little ghd suppliers  bit pretty
just a little more aware
just a little bit thinner
and maybe i`d get there
clearly, clearly ghd pure  i remember
pulling up my shirt
and staring blank ahead
clearly,clearly i remember
days of  discount ghd useless crying
and almost feeling dead
oh perhaps, perhaps if i was smaller
perhaps i could control myself
