Couple of things to add... (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Ah, good to have football back, even if it's excruciating watching the Cowboys and Bengals future CFLers stink up the joint. If you're a Bengals fan, you can't feel terribly good about pass protection after watching Palmer spend more time on his back than Jenna Jameson on the set.

Anyway, wanted to open with something I'm deliberately not linking to, just because it would make a good guy's life a bit more difficult.

Phil Anselmo, former frontman for metal act Pantera, is a New Orleans native and monstrous Saints fan. While I was looking up news on them, I found him floating around on a fairly big website furiously exchanging info on who was likely to make the team and get cut. A question then popped up on the thread asking him what he was up to, musically. Despite a flurry of "ignore him" and "go away" posts by the other posters, he took several minutes to compile some links and write a nice note to this fan of his. It's not so much that that's so earthshaking, but it matches up with my own encounters with him- no matter the situation, makes time for his fans and treats them like his best friend. So, good on ya, Phil- don't ever change, babe.

Now, onto something a bit more nightmarish. I have to credit ol' dirty /b/tard for this one...

Oh, the humanity. Hellish.

To cleanse the palate:

Excellent observation.  Agreed.  Al Davis is to blame.

9 This is a disturbing change to the kinds of images I've grown used to seeing in football posts. Most disturbing.

Isn't he always?

12 Must haz cheerleader plzkthnxbi.

The Bengals have a great pass attack this year, if you're a defensive back catching them.

19 The other members of Pantera pretty much say Phil was/is a jacka**, but I must say, I saw them in '94 or '95  and his onstage persona between songs was weirdly different from the musical performance/lyrics.  He was constantly thanking the crowd for being there etc. and saying "nice" things in between just about every song.  He came off as a cool down-to-earth guy.  I think maybe the drugs and/or fame did him in.

Posted by: whatever at August 08, 2010 07:46 PM (uJPvV)

20 Whatever, I had a chance to play a gig opening up for Down back in New Orleans... I never met the Pantera guys, but Phil was quite pleasant, other than being stoned out of his mind. I'd run into him all the time at shows for local bands, and he was very supportive of even the lamer groups.

Phil used to be in a New Orleans glam band called Razor White... assless chaps, big hair, and all. He had a penchant for quoting Rocky. His mom and I took voice lessons from the same teacher, and through his mom, my band at the time got a nice constructive critique of our demo... as well as a large box full of Pantera SWAG.

I won't pretend to have any idea what the hell was going on behind closed doors with Pantera, but if he was anything of a colleague in private like he is in public, it's hard to see what the problem was. But who knows what the personalities were like.

21 Now that was just fubar, is what that was. My eyes may never be the same.

23 If it makes you feel better, rawmuse, there are more Canadians who couldn't give a damn aboot the CFL than there are Americans who know aboot it.

25 Tom, Darrell was one of the few guitarists I ever heard who could milk a decent sound out of not only a particularly crappy Dean guitar, but Randall amps... I couldn't give those damned things away.

I moved all kinds of Mesa/Boogie, Marshall, Peavey, Fender, VHT, and so forth all day, but couldn't pay someone to take the Randall stuff off my hands.

26 Somebody call me?

Hey tmi3rd, what was he stoned on?

Posted by: FUBAR at August 08, 2010 08:18 PM (LPL4Z)

27 tmi3rd, it's true, bands are like marriages in that often they're personalities can be totally different and hidden on the inside from what they are/look like on the outside.  And of course performers are, well, performing to the crowd.  Nice to see some confirmation that he is a decent guy.

If I thought about it, I'd probably put Vulgar Display of Power as one of my 10 best metal albums, heavy and fast with punk rock attitude.  I loved Darrell's rhythm playing but never cared a whole lot for his soloing (although I liked how he didn't always play the solos over a rhythm track but rather left the bass and drums to carry the bottom).

Posted by: whatever at August 08, 2010 08:20 PM (uJPvV)

28 Darrell was also "famous" for finding all sorts of old beat up/crappy stomp boxes and chaining them together in odd ways.  He supposedly had a room full of them at (I think) his Dad's studio.

Posted by: whatever at August 08, 2010 08:22 PM (uJPvV)

29 FUBAR, it was primarily pot. I suppose it could've been laced with PCP or crack, but he and Pepper never had the classic presentation of laced pot. Rex wasn't playing with them the night that I played with them (Todd from Crowbar was playing bass that night), and the other guys were mainly enjoying their beer.

I wasn't around him enough to see the heroin. I won't speculate as to whether or not that assisted his divorce- Stephanie is a friend of my former band, and she's aggressive in her workouts.

Posted by: tmi3rd at August 08, 2010 08:59 PM (WRtsc)

30 Whatever, at the height of my rock days (early 90s), we had this strange thing happening where we all loved what they were doing in Pantera, but it was way too easy to sound like them. I got more out of Cowboys From Hell than I did from Vulgar Display, but "This Love" is still one of the most powerful things I've ever heard from them.

I'd heard similar things about Darrell in terms of box accumulation... he'd pick up anything he could get his hands on. Reminds me very much of Vernon Reid- at a Living Colour show I worked, Vernon had something like 10 feet tall of rack-mounted processing. Two power amps, four 4x12 cabinets, and by the time his signal got through the speakers, you didn't have any idea what guitar was going through it.

And don't get me started about what a whitey-hater Will Calhoun is.

31 Pantera is/was a good band.  I have four of their albums.  Never saw them live, but the video Pantera 3 was the shit.  That's the only insight I have to how they acted behind the scenes.  Dimebag was full of life.  Phil, from the live scenes and behind the scenes, truly seemed to appreciate the fans.  As did the rest of the band.

33 Hot Air is extra misbehaved this morning--no, I don't have the problems some of y'all do, but it doesn't like to load clean all the time.  I'm not fooling with it for a while this morning, bugger Townhall for making it a badcode nightmare.

Ya'll let some libertrollians in over the weekend?  Awwwww how sweet.  Nice to see you taking pity on 'em, probably got run off everywhere else after too many birther/truther/stupid posts.  ( /dangles bait )

My teams traditionally are Vikings and Redskins.  So...yeah.  Going to be a long season for me.

Getting a free drop for putting a shot in the flowerbed in the middle of the sidewalks is far too kind.  Shoulda made him play it where it lay.

Umm...yeah, that's it for me for now.  Trying a day flame-free for once.  I figure it dies before lunch.

OK.  Phil blew it Sunday, winding up 3 over par after being within 4 or 5 strokes of the leaders at the end of the day Saturday.

But... Tiger really blew chunks... I believe he wound up 11 over par.  Proving, yet again, that there is a god.

Sympathies from a fellow sufferer.

The key to surviving as a 'Skins fan is to move... a lot.  'Grew up in the DC-metro area, but I've moved enough to have several additional teams to follow: Colts, Saints (mostly because of Drew Brees b/c of our time at Purdue), and I gather now that we're in Utah we'll wind up rooting for the Broncos.
