Good question, which I hope is moot. Back in the good old days, teachers had standards of conduct which extended after hours and past school grounds. One of the rules forbade patronizing bars.

Nowadays, those are pretty much gone. Where I grew up, anyone could see how teachers behaved on their own time by going out to one of the two "teacher bars" in town. They tried to keep it respectable but their behavior would betray them from time to time.

Most of the A/V stuff (projecters etc.) has gone away and classrooms are more often equiped with vcrs or, in our fancy schmancy school, "activ boards" which connect to the Internet, can play DVDs, and you can also write on them.

I find myself a little nostalgic for the projectors, with the film canisters.

The best part will be if it's one of his "students" that reveals his digital footprints.

Amen sister. The thing is, these kids are way smarter at that stuff then the teachers teaching them in a lot of cases.

The computers the students use in our school have safeguards so they can't get to "bad" websites, which works great for K-2, but by 3rd grade those kids know how to get around it and take great delight in sneaking around and messing up the smaller kid's computers.

By 5th and 6th grade, they are going around troubleshooting the activ boards because the school district can't afford full time technology staff for each school and the wait time for troubleshooting is often too long.

There's plenty of overlap in math and art/music--golden ratio, Fibbonacci sequence, harmonics, Albrecht Duerer's magic squares, yadda yadda.  But that's not what they mean, is it...all those dead white guys...

I often think that every high school kid should have to read Douglas Hofstadter's "Goedel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid". I read that book to tatters when I was in high school. I still re-visit it every couple of years. Marvelous book.

The day may be approaching.  I think in the next 4-8 yrs, where people will have to decide.  Where they want to live.  Based upon the politics of their area.  There may not be secession, but some States, will repeatedly go the Nullification route, so for all intents and purposes, there will be a split.

We choose our friends, our spouses, where we work, where we live, etc.  Actually, it might not be such a bad thing.  A new "Union" of States with varying degrees of "union".  Seems to me, that's what the Founders had originally intended.  Let the States be supreme, and the citizens of the various States can move among them; as suits their individual likings.

And at the same time, the most awesomest teacher ever if you're a boy in her class.

Yeah, my son's 2nd grade teacher is a gorgeous young blonde woman. I think one or two of the little boys in her class have a bit of a crush on her. Thankfully she is also a woman of integrity who is kind and compassionate with them.

A few of the other moms and I thought we were going to hate her when we met her, because I mean she is full on beautiful, but she is so wonderful that she's one of those women you can't hate even as you watch the dads tripping over their tongues trying to talk to her.

It prohibits the government from unduly restricting free speech.  Not your employer.

If I put up a website or give an interview representing myself as working for the Acme Rocket Company, the First Amendment doesn't prohibit my employer from firing me if I go on record as an employee and promoting unethical behavior.

Speaking of Tea Parties, I just came back from my local one (Bellevue WA).  It was pretty good, maybe 4-5 hundred people?  (Hard to tell, people drifting in and out, lots of people popping in during their lunch break (yeah, funny how that is, most Teabaggers work at these 3 letter words called J-O-B-S!)  Anyways, I digress.  Mostly racist white crowd (lot of them rich swells probably from Medina, Bill Gates's neighborhood).  The next largest ethnic group were Asians (go Team Yellow!)--Again greedy rich techies who probably work at Microsoft.  Just a couple of black people (which I noticed our Kiro 7 news reporter, also black, made a beeline to the black woman who was carrying two small American flags to interview.  He probably asked her first if she felt threatened/safe and then when was it she decided to become an Aunt Tomasina).  I actually got interviewed by an NPR affiliate who was intrigued by my sign (Don't Tax Me Bro" and probably my yellowness.)  She asked me what the meaning of my sign was and I told her it was a take on "Don't Taze me Bro" and had to splain it very painfully to her.  The whole interview was kind of frustrating, and completely unexpected, so I fumbled a little when she asked me what government programs I would cut.  I did recover somewhat when I denounced bailouts of banks and the car industry as well as the health care bill.  I told her it was a problem when 47% of the US households don't pay federal income tax and really egregious that the top 10% account for 73% of the taxes collected.  I told her that socialism happens when 51% of the population decides they want the other 49% to pay for everything and that we are almost there.   We were founded on principles of freedom and liberty, not socialism, and I didn't like the direction the country is going.

There were a lot of young families with kids there, a good smattering of vets (they were asked to come up on the stage), some young college kids who were all fired up and gave me hope, and a good number of seasoned citizens.  Lots of people like myself came alone.  Some of those were obviously on their lunch break from work which they ate standing in place.  The 2 cops I saw looked completely bored.

One really exciting thing, there were several really dynamic candidates who are running against Patty Murray.  One of them Clint Diddier said something like "This is a nice City Hall building we are standing in front of.  That nice building was able to be built because of all the other buildings surrounding it and the free markets/capitalism that are taking place in those buildings right now as I speak."  He also went through our current deficit numbers and taxation data.  He then said "When America went to war against King George, the tax rate was only 12%".  Oh and one more thing he said I really liked, "If God can live on 10% the Federal Government should be able to too."

Anyways, I just had to let you all know what went on my Tea Party.  I'm so glad that I went.

Jane, it sounds like your party was a great success.  I bet you're tired--weren't you one of the primo organizers?  There weren't any problems at our Tea Party, but it was funny when one of the guys running for Patty Murray's seat called out one of the guys in the audience.  He pointed to the dude and said something like "Hey, I recognize you.  You follow us around and dog us at all our events.  You're a Democrat aren't you?"  The guy sheepishly admitted he was.  The candidate said "Yeah, I see you're here with your camera.  I guess you're trying to catch us doing something illegal or something.  Well good luck.  I was wondering if you feel threatened in any way as you are surrounded by all these radical agitators."  The guy jus shook his head.

Media labs usually entail computers and audio-visual equipment -- we used them a lot for ESL and foreign language students (yep, at one time I held something rather akin to this guy's job, but with teaching involved in it -- I just had to teach and be able to run all the tech stuff at the same time).  According to the policy I worked under at least -- you were not to use the school's equipment for personal use; they might let you slide on resume building, e-mail (they monitored), but a couple of people got nailed for dating service, porn, and political stuff.

Guy sounds like a loser.

Theresa, He and Chris Widener were both really impressive.  Don Benton was there too (state rep from Vancouver).  He kind of rubbed me the wrong way.  Kind of a pushy blustery guy.  I'm so glad I went and heard these guys.
