Crazy Blog Money: Salem Communications Buys Hot Air for Undisclosed Sum
— Ace

Although Michelle Malkin is the owner and got most of the money, presumably Allah and Captain Ed have also got a nice chunk of change in the deal and contracts, too.

CPAC hasnÂ’t even officially started and already its making news. Mediaite has learned that leading center-right web site Hot Air has been acquired by Salem Communications for an undisclosed sum. Sources close to the deal claim that Michelle Malkin, the conservative pundit and sole owner of Hot Air, has been in talks with Salem for some time, but the announcement was timed to coincide with the Conservative Political Action Conference, which opens tomorrow in Washington D.C.

Hot Air is one of the biggest, most influential conservative sites on the Web and was launched on April 24, 2006, with Michelle Malkin as founder/CEO (though she remains editorially focused on her own blog MichelleMalkin.com and her own writing and television appearances.) Hot Air is managed on a day-to-day basis by editors Ed Morrissey and the mysterious AllahPundit, who are reported to be part of the deal in the sale of to Salem, and absolutely essential to the core value of Hot Air. We are told that, from a userÂ’s perspective, Hot Air will remain the same despite the change in ownership.

Salem also owns Townhall.

Good for them!

Thanks to JackM.

11 Shalom Salem has great radio people, but there web site is, like stuck in 1999.  Hope they inject some HotAir into it (and not vice versa).

Prager. Medved.  Hewitt.  Morrissey!

As I mentioned in the other thread Conservastream Media, the CSM is really quite good now, from Rush (not my favorite) to Prager.

70 How in the hell did Admiral Eddie and Eyeore ever become the "go to" blog for conservatives.

I think it's a really useful conservative news feed.  I've really reduced reading (and participating in) the comment threads because they don't take care of their trolls well at all and there is too much religious crap injected to the political stories.

The poorly defined but ever-present 'line of civility' that they leave hanging over the commenters also drives me nuts.  I recall when Obama got elected Ed making this big point of saying we shouldn't drift into Obama Derangement Syndrome.  Seemed like there was a post a day to that effect with lots of warnings issued about criticisms of the POTUS and FLOTUS.  Yet they started this Obamateurism of the Day thing, which is chock full of content that seems like it's designed to draw the commenters up to that magic line.  I kinda lost interest after that.

But, I still visit it as a news feed.

I know a lot of folks are enamoured of the guest bloggers (Green Room), but I'm not a fan of that format.

Things change, but I hope things here don't change for while, anyway.

Who wasn't happy?  Hugh?  He never intimated that on the air.  He was also the last of the Salem hosts to start charging.

I always assumed that the decision to charge was the hosts', not Salem's.  Medved had been charging for years, and Prager had started charging early in '09.

The ponytailed one is living the dream already, maddogg. He's got a community of perhaps a dozen people of little intelligence, no character and less civility. Apart from them, he's alone, has no money, and he can't show his face in public.

Compare that to John Cole and the rest of the gang at balloonjuice. They're about as far left as selrahC, and most of them aren't the sort of people I like to hang out with. But they do have intelligent discussions over there; and when they argue, they don't threaten each other.

If we count the balloonjuicers as enemies, I can literally say that I wouldn't wish CJ's fate upon an enemy. And that's pathetic.

And my memory might be off, but Captain Ed seems to have lost the ability to discuss an issue without a sitting on the fence "on the other hand" type of argument. Lastly, nobody at Hot Air has developed the skills to write a 100 word "enough with the foul language" post, immediately followed by a 100,000 word apology, like Ace has. Maybe it's a innate skill.

I don't know how the commenting over at Hot Air runs because I have never followed them. I did, however, spend all my initial time for commenting on the Townhall Site.

They allowed the trolls to take over there a long time ago. Comments on popular threads like Ann Coulter would run into the 400 and 500 range and 90% of them would be nothing more than back in forth between the trolls and a few of the regulars.  Those comments would all be he in the vein of "you suck followed by no its you that sucks".

When it got to be too much I left and that is how I wound up at AOS. Also, they heavily censure there for "objectionable" language via an automatic filter.

And if you think AOS has lockup problems, wait till you get on a 500 comment thread there.

My guess is Hot Air will go down hill fast.

Yeah. Michelle Malkin.

Despite the viscid adoration that sometimes shows up among the HA commentariat ("Looky! The Boss is on TV again!"), looks like she sees her 15-minute clock coming up to about 14:50 and is prepping for a soft landing.

Can't blame her for that. Hell, it's the smart move!

109 A few weeks ago Herr Morgenholz posted such a succinct analysis of Hot Air that I copied and saved it for future reference.  He nailed it:

I have an account at HA which also sits unused.  I registered so early that I just emailed AP and he set me up manually.

A great many of the commenters there are self-righteous buffoons.  A great many more are just buffoons.  My favorites are the Bible idolaters, that great mass of evangelical Protestants who never read anything about humility in the Book.  I suppose their pastor at Wednesday night Bible study didn't have them use their highlighters on those passages.

As has been said before, HA is where bloggers go to die.  AoS is where commenters come to get nekkid.

111 Ace kinda has that already, in the headline links... what more would you want?

Hot Air's is more dynamic.  Lots of headlines updated very frequently.  I also like that you can comment on their headlines (in a devoted thread).  Often those threads are the ones that attract the real experts in whatever the topic happens to be (such as the science threads), so they can be better than the general threads.  And, he has them archived in such a way that you can sort through the headlines by subject area, making it easy to find an interesting article or thread from several days ago.

I like the current layout and functionality of Hot Air.  It would be a shame if that changes.

And, of course, they have the much-desired "preview" button.

But, AoSHQ has the ability to generate sock-puppets, which really adds to the fun.

It would be nice if AoSHQ developed a rep for specializing in news items from particular areas... such as military issues (poorly covered at Hot Air) and technology (also kind of a weak point over there).  I do think it would draw traffic.

Posted by: Y-not at February 17, 2010 08:52 AM (X69zM)

112 The Hotair comment threads are the only place I've ever seen the word "sodomite" used as an actual insult and not in a sarcastic/joking manner.

Seriously though, the newsfeed is good, and it's still the blog I check second-most after this one just for that.  Good for them.

When I finally got registered there about 18 months ago it seemed like the place went completely to fucking hell.  This place is edgier by far and the commentary much more spot on.  Plus I like to use profanity to make a point; I think there's a fine line in using it effectively and being like some dufus kid acting out.

Allahperv is great in the self-promotion department and making a complete ass out of himself to anybody with a functioning cortex; sad to say that shit sells.

115 The problem with their comments section is that its a literal hall of conservative stereotypes.
You have the Paultards. The "God hates Fags" fanatics. The Palinistas, the Anti-Palinistas (who often go after each other in a battle that is indescribably boring), the dickless Moderates, the OMG YOU ARE A RINO nuts, and worst of all the trolls who alternate between these rolls.

116 Allahpundit is one of my favorite bloggers ever.  He consistently cracks me up, and he's a very smart guy.  His eeyorism is a useful check and balance for the right, even though he gets a lot of crap for it.

But I imagine him regularly weeping himself to sleep, clutching his cat and shedding big salty beta male tears into his pillow, because hotair's comment threads are so much worse than ace's.  Even when ace has abandoned his site for yet another four-day valu-rite bender, the discussions here still beat hotair's.

137 Hot Air has good, timely links and decent to good content. Ed carries the morning shift while EyeoreP carries the evening, each with their own style. So far, so good. Green Room can range from 'eh' to 'fantastic,' fantastic being most common with Doctor Zero. He's the clean-up hitter Hot Air needs to get the rights to before he bolts to other, more lucrative pastures. The commentary? Pathetic to very good - somewhat milquetoast and boring but enough volume to get some excellent observations and good contributions.

So, good for Team Malkin. Solid A.

However, no one beats Ace et al.'s edge and the commentariat. I'm not here to praise Caesar Ace, however. The fact that Ace has this audience is testament to his value. No, the Ace in the Whole (see, free punny goodness) here is the moronosphere. Funniest, most insightful while sidesplitting fuckers this side of Protein Wisdom. Plus, the M&Ms can carry on the blog almost without Ace. Make an open thread, or do nothing at all, and the commentariat will fill in with its usual banter. No, no, no... that's a good thing

So AoSHQ gets an overall A+ with B+ monetary reward. It'll change, as in improve. Ace and contributors need just keep doing what they're doing, without starving in the interim, and the world will become their oyster. Longevity in the industry, consistently high marks in the growing dextrosphere, clever profanity, and high hobo content make for a winning investment opportunity. Plus, there's the lucrative Ace T-Shirt market. It goes untapped but it's the real, high-profit center.

So, Ace, keep it up. Your ship will come in. Then the Thai trannies will follow.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at February 17, 2010 09:21 AM (swuwV)

Milquetoast commentary is precisely what they are shooting for my friend.  I dropped narry an f bomb, criticized Chuckles Johnson's little hatchet troll N bombing the place, and pushed the line not even a third of the way the palin haters get away with every day.  Eeyore and Edwina allow unholy hell to hit just about everyone but Blessed Barack....evidently my calling Michelle O'bammy "Patrick Ewing's sister" was "beyond the pale" but palin hate that would make Andi Sully cream her jeans is "appropo".....

Cole is just another, less-intelligent shade of St. Andi of aSissy.  He may be only left-liberal, but the people he's sought to bring into his blog are straight-up collectivists.  Ball Juice somehow combines the ham-fistedness of Arse-hlC with the early-onset dementia of Andi.  I think it's become one of the dumbest, most hate-filled blogs around, and that's sad, as it once (2003-05) boasted a commentariat that was second-to-none.

Bingo. The news headlines I'll check out quite frequently. Less so the blog posts. I've got a registration going back all the way to the beginning but I haven't commented on anything there in quite awhile.

I hope they fire Allah. It said Salem is devoted to Christian themed stuff, so I can't imagine they're going to want an atheist spewing his crap on their site.

Bring in Doc Zero. His posts are always well written and extremely insightful. I'm not sure he could maintain that high quality if he had to post multiple items every single day, though. I just went to Zero's site a month or so ago and bookmarked. Now I don't even need to wait until his stuff pops up on HotAir.
