— Gabriel Malor According to the Rubio people:
Charlie Crist has halted all its TV advertising in the Orlando and Tampa Bay markets where the anti-Rubio spots were airing. That's presumably a sign that Crist has decided to marshal his resources for later or perhaps drop out altogether.
Crist is finally giving up on a campaign that was effectively dead on January 19. Talk of an independent bid is still being passed around, but no one seems to know what Crist is up to.
If the election were held this week, with Crist running as an independent, he and Rubio end up in a statistical tie, ahead of Democrat Kendrick Meek.
Crist.......32
Rubio......30
Meek.......24
Of course, three-way races tend to go bonkers, making the outcome hard to predict. (Think Scozzawhatever fiasco.)
More: Rich Lowry over at NRO gives Five Reasons Crist Shouldn't Go Independent. Most cutting: "He'd be Arlen Specter, except without a party." Eeesh.
Still More: John Cornyn, apparently trying to correct his mistake, called Crist on Friday to urge him not run as an independent. Crist didn't answer and he hasn't called back.

7 I hate to sound like a dunce, but if Rubio is so far ahead of Crist in the polls, how can they be almost dead even if Crist were running as an independent?
They're assuming that Crist would get a lot more indie and Dem support if he was no longer considered a Republican. I think that's bs too, but we'll see.

Fox news is saying he might be switching parties.
How awesome would it be if he switched parties and got his ass handed to him by the Dem candidate as well?

Crist's options:
1. Step out gracefully, try to rebuild his image, run against Nelson in 2012.
2. He pulled the ads because they were ineffective, or is retooling the campaign (I doubt this one).
3. Inde bid. No sense running attack ads on Rubio this far out from November if this is his plan.
My guess is he hasn't decided between 1 and 3. He is a Career politician, option 1 is a difficult road to work. A statistical tie is good odds whn you have a big ego, are in full panic mode, and are feeling abandoned by about everybody.
Expect the Independent announcement by weeks end.

Yeah, but the indy almost never wins. Lieberman managed it, but in CT, the R was a doofus and the D was unlikeable. Rubio's cuddly if to the right of some indies. Perot didn't win. We don't remember the guy that made the Franken/Coleman race 3-way, and the D won in NY-23.

A-freaking-men!
The Quinnipiac poll showing Crist in a tie with Rubio in a 3-way-race is bogus. Rassmussen asked likely voters the same question a few weeks ago and showed Rubio handing both Meek and Crist their asses. And Rubio's support among R's and I's has only grown since then.
Either way this race goes, Crist needs to be shown the door. He's shown himself to be an opportunist with his finger in the political winds. We don't need any more of that.

Switching Parties?
That would be sweet-
Then we could beat him in the General fair and square. Be fun watching all the Dems REALLYnot show up to vote- this could be potential suicide for their down ticket races. Crist was/is a heck of a lot more conservative than Specter, even if he does piss us off. I don't see him lighting up the Florida Democratic base.
Posted by: Gerry Owen at April 19, 2010 07:37 AM (4Hy88)
I've been following Quinnipeac Polls for a couple of years and they are always scewed dem. Usually by several points. I would assume that in oversampled dems christ would do better as he would grab some dems and with no repubs to offsett that sampled in the poll he does better.
Crist would be better off dropping out and running for nelsons seat in 2012.
Posted by: robtr at April 19, 2010 07:41 AM (fwSHf)
First, the Quinnipiac poll is an outlier. Rasmussen has Crist finishing dead last in a three-way race, with Rubio well in front of both Crist and Meek.
To answer the question about runoff: No, FL doesn't have a runoff, based on everything I've heard here.
Finally, Crist would be better served fighting Bill Nelson in 2012. Nelson sucks, no one likes him, he's B.O.'s lapdog with a 38% approval rating, and with 2012 being a prez election year, turnout will be high to vote the highly unpopular prez out of office...and Nelson will be a casualty.

Posted by: Mandy P. at April 19, 2010 07:42 AM (MK6Kx)
One more thing: FL law says that Crist would have to have his app in to the state no later than April 30. So he's got just under two weeks to decide to do this.
He can't pull a Lieberman and wait out the primary, then turn Indie. It's now or never.
Posted by: Crush Liberalism at April 19, 2010 07:43 AM (8NiWI)
Nah nah na na na..............do you think it was the photo of OrangeMan with Obama that sealed the deal? If so, photos need to be found of any & all squishy conservatives who were dumb enough to have their photo taken with Obama.
Although the best photo of a politician with Obama has to be that one of the mayor of Tampa (?) where Obama is bowing to her. That photo will be a plus for that woman when she's up for reelection.

Would Meeks step aside for him? Heh! Arlen Spector switched parties with the promise that the Dems wouldn't run anyone against him in the primary. Then Joe Seastak put the kaybosh on that despite Teh Bamster trying to buy Joe off. Spector recently talked about jumping ahead of other Dems for leadership positions in a couple of committees (saying Harry Reid had promised him)--all before he and Harry win their next elections. There's got to be moonbat Demtards that must be incensed with people like Spector (and Crist if he switches) who are basically opportunistic parasites, not party faithfuls.

And while Crist might be tempted out of ego to try it, I think somewhere at least he has to realize that even on the off chance he wins that most independents don't have long lived political careers after leaving their original party.

They used to be pretty good in blowout races in NJ/NY/CT. Even more than skewing Dem, they're just sloppy. Even the best pollster can have a bad sample (basic sampling theory) but Ras has an amazing track record. He really seems to know how to account for errors in technique.

Just read the Hotline article-nothing really new there.
I Still think the Indie bid is likely, but I don't think he has made up his mind yet-
no sign of trying to retain key advisers, no campaign staff moves, rumors of meetings, etc...
Nothing.
I think he is still weighing his rapidly dwindling options.
Time is running out on him though. If he wants to switch or run as an indie, he needs to move fairly quick to catch up on his campaign apparatus. FL is a big state.

Like Cartman might have said, "They want to save the world, but they just wear a suit and flap their gums a lot."
I could go for a long time in a discussion of the thesis, "You learn all the wrong lessons in law school."
And one-third of government -- the least accountable branch -- being the exclusive province of a single profession explains why lawyers are so prolific and so well-paid, despite never having to write a thesis or compete against international students. Sure, I can see why a journalist would find them to be smart, but that's damning with faint praise.

Why do the call it "Political Science" anyway? There is no Science involved.
I have a my degree in it, I always called it "Political Non-Science", or "Nonsense". both are applicable. It should be "Governmental Relations" or something.

Academic hierarchy is pretty much determined by suffixes:
-ics
-engineering
-ology
-science
-studies
Exceptions:
Computer Science is either an -ics or an -engineering
Economics is at best an -ology, but usually a -science

Arguing opinions is hardly worth much. One side declares itself the winner today- to be over turned tomorrow. It is an oratory practice and in actuality, has very little actual value. The problem is that people give lawyers far more respect and esteem than they actually deserve. What do they produce? Opinions? Do they teach different case law at Harvard than they do at some state university? No. So why is Harvard the sacred ground for Scotus? Apparently graduating anywhere else makes you second rate.
I think Booby Kennedy nailed it for me. He said pay attention to what a man has actually accomplished rather than what he says he will accomplish. That is the best yardstick for determining future results. Obama is a perfect example of that. He accomplished nothing. Fail. Therein lies his future worth. Having no monopoly on any given phrase, I yield the balance of my time and rest my case.

Well the funny thing is I'm not sure why these guys would possibly expect their new party to do much of anything for them once they do switch. Look at Spector for example, ok, so the Dem's don't fulfill their promise and run someone against him in the primary and pass him over for leadership positions.
What the hell is Spector going to do, switch back? Not bloody likely. The republicans wouldn't touch him with a 200 foot pole at this point. They'd just laugh at him and tell him to pound sand. So once Spector, or Crist, or any politician announces that they've "switched" parties the only way any of those promises are kept is if the people your dealing with are honorable. As Spector found out, their not.
I think Spector is just now figuring out he sold his soul for nothing. I think if Crist goes Independent or switches to Democrat, he'll discover the same thing pretty quickly. Though honestly I wouldn't mind a bit if he'd switch over to Democrat or Independent. One less RINO for us to have to deal with later.
