— Dave in Texas Service records say "no". (NYT link).
“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Mr. Blumenthal said to the group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”There was one problem: Mr. Blumenthal, a Democrat now running for the United States Senate, never served in Vietnam. He obtained at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took repeated steps that enabled him to avoid going to war, according to records.
There's a video embedded with the story, and his language is unambiguous.
"We have learned something very important since the days that I served in Vietnam".
The article notes times when he is fuzzier with his language, but also times like the 2008 talk in Norwalk, when it's really not all that ambigous.
This is stupid on steriods. It's boggles the mind (and a boggled mind is of absolutely no use to anyone).
Also it will kill his Senate bid.
Dummy.

UPDATE: Blumenthal remembers the last mission.
"Hartford... shit; I'm still only in Hartford... Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the jungle. "Posted by: Richard Blumenthal at May 17, 2010 09:31 PM (asRwH)
UPDATE2: Slublog has this fertile mind with the p-shops, doesn't he?
UPDATE3: The spin begins. Focus is on the deferments, not the lie about having served in VietNam. [link via DrewM.]
Lame. Look at the video again. It isn't about his deferments, it's his lie about having served in VietNam.

*Slubs adds "with apologies to Adam Baldwin". But I'll bet he laughs his ass off too.

The article went on to state that Blumenthal, often listed as Captain of the Harvard swim team, was never on the Harvard swim team. Blumenthal is often listed as Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal, when in fact he was one of dozens of editors of the Yale Law Journal in his law school class.

Because, up to now, they have always gotten away with it. It has cost them votes, and sometimes elections (only sometimes), but they have always really gotten away with it.
Kerry, at least, built his lies out of exaggeration (Boone Pickens' million dollars is still offered to anyone who can prove something untrue among what the Swiftboat Vets for Truth said or wrote) and it cost him the election, for the most part (that, and his desire to surrender in Iraq) but his Senate seat is still safe. Murtha did far worse, accusing the Haditha marines of murder in Congress ... and then didn't even have the decency to acknowledge that he was wrong, in the worst way. He called his own constituents "racists", "bigots", and "idiots" and he still won. Dems don't care about lying or far worse.
This might sink Blumenthal, in the current atmosphere, but only because of the uniqueness of this time, forced by the assault of the feral government on the citizenry and the nation since The Precedent came in. Might.

That's the whole thing, though, HE has to feel shame over the fact that he's a lowlife. Dems have figured out that they aren't even embarrassed about being lowlifes, anymore. They just push through this stuff and the public, usually forgets and loses interest, with the MFM covering. We have to rely on them having at least the tiniest, most infinitesimal sense of shame and propriety. I don't know Blumenthal, but I don't get a good feeling that he measures up. And, the public might force it this time, but that would only go to show how unique things are, now.

I think that the absolutely insane way the dems have raped our governmental institutions, under the direction of the Indonesian Imbecile, and attacked the populace, has finally gone too far. I still think it's too late. The federal government has gone feral and will not be domesticated, again. Agreed, I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt on why he started. After finding out he lied about captaining the Harvard swim team it became clear he is just a liar and delusional. Nailing a person who doesn't wear medals on their service record is not too easy-the person has to sign a release for the DD-214 like John kerry lied about being willing to do.
Add in the medals and the feds can investigate to their hearts content, but the harvard thing is so reckless it just shows he was thinking he had that ted Kennedy brand DonkAss armor that allows the newsies to set new records for idiocy.....

When the MFM gets scared, they might. But they are in on this fight, with The Precedent and the Washington junta, to the very end. The Precedent and the MFM are going to try to burn this nation down before it all comes crashing in on them. I think that only The Precedent had this intention from the beginning, but he drew the Dems and the MFM in far enough (and then some, though they went perfectly willingly, even enthusiastically) that they are committed, too.

Hey Dick Blumenthal was awarded a varsity letter in the "breast stroke" from the girls at Radcliffe back in the day. It was his press secretary who screwed up and thought the letter meant he was on the swim team.
And old Dicky went on to see some action in a real combat zone as a teacher in one of the inner city schools in Washington D.C.
And we're just lucky that Dicky didn't claim three Purple Hearts for (1) a smashed thumb; (2) a splinter in his finger while fixing a park tent deck with his USMC unit; and (3) a phony one just for the hell of it. I mean somebody has to keep up with John Kerry, and there aren't any rice baskets around to throw a concussion grenade into.

The records are pretty comparable, both wangled stateside reserve billets once it was pretty apparent that the war was no longer the 'good war' it'd looked like when Kerry had gone off to get his combat ticket punched a couple years earlier,
Of course, W never fibbed about it, though that didn't stop the press from chewing on him.
Ordinarily Blumenthal could count on the usual Democrat-media double-standard to protect him, but he may have been telling tales too long and too publicly for them to cover his butt this time.
It'd be nice if we were able to say "Wow, those Times guys smacked one out of the park" but since it's the Times we're left asking "How long have they known and why did they decide to go with it now?"
I'm going to presume they found out someone else has been sniffing around, they concluded that it'd come out anyway, and they'd therefore pull the trigger far enough in advance of the candidacy deadlines to give the Dems a couple days to do some polling and decide if he's fatally wounded as a candidate.

I think mrkwong has summed it up rather nicely.
The only question remaining, given his analysis, is that it is too perfect. It is cynical, yes, but also so on-target that it you know it's true, or something very close to it is true, and that's verfied through experience.
Whats disturbing is when you ask, "Why don't people realize the wisdom of these words?" Because the answer is, "They do."
Then, it hits you: "They don't care; they don't give a damn about the corruption of the NYT and political establishment and all. They just don't give a damn at all. Worse: they do give a damn, as long as it serves their interest. Otherwise, fuck you."
Ahhhh -- back in the New York Groove!
Corrupt, so corrupt, these leftists. You can't argue with them or even show how corrupt they are, because their supporters don't give a damn, so why should they give a damn?
They just do; they do what they're sent to do; that's all the infernal bastards do.

Note the subtle lie Ambinder slips in to give the lying Blumenthal the out: That the Times is claiming he "routinely" lied about his service in Vietnam.
This allows the liar to say (indignantly, surely) 'I may have misspoken once or twice but on many occasions I clearly said I never served in Vietnam. So *it's obvious* that I wasn't trying to mislead anyone.'
To me, Ambinder's clever (but mendacious) defense of a caught-dead-to-rights Democrat pol should disqualify him from any journalistic position. And of course Blumie should be toast. But as others have noted above, in CT opposition to all things military, and lying about having served, are *positive attributes.*

Blumenthal is one of the most santimonious nanny-state pricks on the planet. Of course, he's wildly popular in CT, red diaper capitol of the Northeast.
This couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Conspiracy theory time - perhaps Blumenthal had something else that was about to come out, which would have been much more damaging to the Democrat brand than some Stolen Valor remarks - something a little more Spitzer like. So the Dems, through their proxy the NYT, spike his campaign with this 'little peccadillo' (to progressives and many moderates, that is) in order to limit the damage.

I am glad that Mr. Blumenthal was caught in his lies, exaggerations and misstatements and I am amazed that the New York Times actually reported his party in the 3rd paragraph (usually, they avoid ever mentioning party when a Democrat is caught, while even the smallest Republican faux pas will be identifed "REPUBLICAN' in the first sentence).
However, there *is* a larger truth in Mr. Blumenthal's misstatements. The Left was well known for disrespecting military personnel, whether they came back from Vietnam, Germany, Korea or were entirely stateside. My older cousins serving at the time always changed into civvies as soon as they could to avoid hassles.

Remember all that Shit about Bush and how we must understand the artistic view point on his assassination in a book/movie. Now someone has done the same thing about our Dear Leader and the MFM goes crazy...........
A Jefferson County teacher picked the wrong example when he used assassinating President Barack Obama as a way to teach angles to his geometry students.
Someone alerted authorities and the Corner High School math teacher was questioned by the Secret Service, but was not taken into custody or charged with any crime.
"We did not find a credible threat," said Roy Sexton, special agent in charge of Birmingham's Secret Service office. "As far as the Secret Service is concerned, we looked into it, we talked to the gentleman and we have closed our investigation."
A Corner High geometry teacher picked the wrong example, President Barack Obama, to use in a lesson on angles. The lesson resulted in a Secret Service investigation. (AP) Sexton said he generally doesn't discuss threat cases, but confirmed his office investigated the incident. No federal charges followed the probe.
The teacher was apparently teaching his geometry students about parallel lines and angles, officials said. He used the example of where to stand and aim if shooting Obama.
"He was talking about angles and said, 'If you're in this building, you would need to take this angle to shoot the president,' " said Joseph Brown, a senior in the geometry class.
Efforts to reach the teacher for comment Monday were unsuccessful.
Superintendent Phil Hammonds said the teacher remains at work, and there are no plans for termination.
"We are going to have a long conversation with him about what's appropriate," Hammonds said. "It was extremely poor judgment on his part, and a poor choice of words."
Caroline Polk, the parent of a ninth-grader at the school, said she doesn't believe the teacher ought to be fired.
"We all make mistakes, and we should be able to learn from our mistakes," she said. "What he said was just wrong and inappropriate. Everyone's got their own opinions, but we have to be aware of our surroundings. At this point, it just needs to be handled in a way that it won't be repeated."

The man served during the Vietnam war as a Marine Reservist, He should be thanked for his service.
Many men and women served during the Vietnam war estimates are about three million. One million men served inside Vietnam or in the Tonkin Gulf. Many more served in Guam, Thailand and other bases that supported the war effort.
Many men also served in Europe, and other locations during the Vietnam war.
Everyman who served during this era felt the scorn from his fellow American's not just the veterans who served in country or afloat in the Tonkin Gulf.
He is one of the ones who served during the Vietnam war, "We veterans" as he said and he is one of the three million of us, the We who served.

Officials from teams who made these presentations went along with the charade, but some questioned the legitimacy of the process based on the kinds of questions that were thrown back to them. “It didn’t take long to realize you’re dealing with 25-year-old kids,” one source saidCleveland executives are still on edge, but privately feeling far more confident now than they did weeks ago. As much as nike dunks anything, William Wesley has been muscled out of the process in the past week or so, with teams insisting that communication to James goes directly through his business manager Maverick Carter. So unnerved over World Wide Wes’ ubiquitous presence in the process, Carter had to go public to undermine Wesley’s credibility and proclaim his own powerThe wresting back of power into James’ Akron-based camp goes a long way to securing the Cavs’ chances for re-signing James. This could preserve James’ future with the Cavaliers, because those surrounding him will eagerly validate his decision to take more money, stay Nike Dunk SB home and keep them all relevant in his career and life.Team LeBron turned this courtship of presentations into a marketing tool for the breadth of his brand, into a visual of the heavy-hitter suitors ultimately being rebuffed out of James’ loyalty and love for Cleveland.
