— Ace This Ain't Hell wrote today to tell me that Margaret Cho was on Dancing With The Stars.
I expect Margaret Cho will be every bit the success at dance as she is at comedy.
Livestream: here.
Thanks to Melissa Clouthier.

Half the fun is pulling for the ones that do not belong to be dismissed.
New season of Castle. I'll give The Event a try. It has to be better than Flash Forward, which had a good premise but sucked in execution. None of the characters were relateable, the main female protagonist was an outright bitch.
I'm recording the game so I can retain my Man Card. BackwardsGirl must be obeyed on this night if I ever want to eat again.
Emmit Smith had the quote of the century after his season when he answered the question "Do any of your football playing buds goad you for appearing on this show?"
He answered with "A real man will try to do something he's never done before."
Word.

i've always wondered if women find female comedians funny. Maybe i just don't get the jokes or can't relate, but I don't find any females comedians funny.

Margaret Cho once flirted with me during the aftershow at the Lakeshore Theatre (I was there for the show after hers.) I ignored her. She walked away.
If Bristol Palin had done that to me? You'd never see her unpregnant.

I think Carol Burnett is pretty funny, and also classy, but I think of her as more of an actress. Now that you mention it, I can't think of a comedienne (proper spelling) who truly amuses me. All the routines are "Hey, I had kids and now my tits are all swingy!" or "Hey, aren't men dumb!?" LAME

, though they have managed some good episodes since. Though you're likely a fan of the more sardonic misanthropic House, not the one who occasionally does some sould-searching. After Amber died, though, it became too introspective and not enough about the medicine. Should have stopped sometime after House and Wilson reconciled.

I'm sure Mr. D'oh is an affecianado of teh arts. I'm sure his interest isn't purient at all, but he sincerely wants to critique Miss Palin's form and technique. He probably just wants to see how an American can pull off that classic French dance, the Cans Cans.

I think Tammi Pescatelli is a pretty funny comedienne. I think the key could be that she is actually telling the jokes that are funny as opposed to some other female comediennes where the joke is supposed to be funny only because its a girl telling it.

I've thought about this, actually. I think it's because the female sense of humor tends to be more situational and story-focused rather than suited to the punch-punch-punch rhythm of a standup routine.
Case in point: I get paid to write humor columns. I do not like The Stooges.

Ah yes. Margaret Cho up. Already with the mimicking her mom.
The one season of "Last Comic Standing" I saw, the guy who won, Dat Phan was Vietnamese and his only schtick was imitating his mom who owned a beauty salon. He was so not funny and virtually unwatchable. There was another guy who was a chain smoker/compulsive ironer from NJ who was a lot funnier and Ralphie May (big, fat white dude) who really should have won.
I swear Dat Phan only won because he was a minority, and the geniuses on the network thought it would be cool to have him be the winner (show their diversity creds or something). I believe Ralphie May is doing stuff in Vegas. I don't know what happened to Dat Phan.

I remember her because she basically epitomized the female comediennes of the '80s, what with the tie and all (although thanks to Karen on Will and Grace, whenever I see a woman wearing a vest as a fashion statement, I immediately think, "Why are you dressed like a female comic from 1986? Ladies, am I right? Am I right?") The only survivors of that era are Ellen and Bonnie Hunt, who largely owes her career to the fact that David Letterman wants to bone her and was forever funding projects for her.

I swear Dat Phan only won because he was a minority, and the geniuses on the network thought it would be cool to have him be the winner (show their diversity creds or something). I believe Ralphie May is doing stuff in Vegas. I don't know what happened to Dat Phan.
Posted by: runningrn at September 20, 2010 08:52 PM (8GYOu)
Can't stand Ralphie May. But he's a lot better than Dat Phan. He got his Comedy Central half hour special and hasn't done shit since. That show has proceeded to launch no one into the big time, but I think most of the other winners have at least been funny comedians. I think the next two winners were John Heffron and Alonzo Bodden and both of those are hilarious.

I thought the second two judges were a little crypto-snarky, but all in all they seemed pleased. Does that mean she'll be "safe" for a week? I suppose I'll have to figure out how one actually advances in this competition.
It's a combination of judges scores and viewers votes.

The only two seasons I really watched were the Kristie Yamaguchi and Apollo Ohno seasons. They both deserved to win. I think athletes do better than celebutards because they are used to being coached, they strive for perfection, they're in it to win and so they're very competitive. Figure skating and dancing aren't really that similar. Now the boy band stars, they do actually dance.

Stiller and Meara; Jerry Stiller and his wife Ann Meara (Ann was the female, mother of Ben Stiller, heh). Jerry still shows up on "King of Queens", and played George's dad on Seinfeld.

Fair point. Also, I think it's good for Bristol to say, "I'm not my mom", because the corollary* is that Sarah is not her daughter. Since, for better or worse, Bristol is in the public eye, it helps for her to distinguish herself as her own person.

No, I'm not saying they didn't deserve to win-- I mean, I stopped watching because I think the deck is stacked FOR the athletes for exactly those reasons. They had to have superior fast-twitch skills, attention to training, and sense of self-discipline to get where they are. Most of the athletes/dancers have done incredibly well on this show and I think it dooms the rest of the contestants from the start. Figure skating IS different than dancing but most figure skaters and gymnasts, especially from that era, have had extensive ballet training and have strong natural flexibility. Doesn't seem fair.
