Delaware Senate Race: T-24 Hours
— Gabriel Malor

We're a little less than a day away from another round of primaries. Of course, the one that's caught all our attention and become a somewhat greater symbol than would ordinarily be the case (Really? Delaware?) is Castle vs. O'Donnell.

For some, the race is about pragmatism: "do we take a sure thing in a blue state and take back the Senate?" We've been arguing a lot of that here at the HQ. For some, the race is about sending a message: "what kind of GOP do we want to be a part of?"

Those are absolutely appropriate questions to be asking in a primary. That's the whole point. But tomorrow evening the primary will be over. And, no matter who wins, Republicans will have to pull together to keep this senate seat out of Democratic hands.

Some have already stated that they won't do that; that they'd rather a Democrat win the seat than Mike Castle. That's exactly the sort of self-induced injury the GOP doesn't need. (Not to mention, the O'Donnell supporters are going to be pretty butt-hurt if they receive anything less than full-throated support from the former Castle supporters were she to become our candidate.)

Tomorrow, the GOP picks a candidate and the questions change. After tomorrow, it's not about pragmatism or purity. The only questions that matter: "do you vote for an (R) or do you vote for a (D) or do you sit out and let the (D) win?" No names in there. It doesn't really matter who the (R) is or who the (D) is.

And it doesn't really matter which side of the primary battle lines you were on. Or, it shouldn't. But I would excuse a little venom in some cases. The loudest mouths on the O'Donnell side engage in so many personal attacks, it's not clear to me that they even care what happens after the primary. And the targets of their attacks can probably be excused for saying "to hell with it."

This morning, Mark Levin, in the space of less than 300 words, calls Patterico "jackass", "idiot", "the ass", and "loser with a keyboard, part of the circle nerds." He also attacks Patterico's competency to do his job -- his real job, not his blogging hobby. With personal attacks like that, I wouldn't be surprised if Patterico declined to lend his support to Levin's candidates in this race or any other in the future. And that's another self-induced injury that the GOP doesn't really need.

By the way, here's the post Levin is "responding" to by calling Patterico names and impugning his livelihood. Please read it. You'll note a remarkable lack of namecalling.

2 It would be nice for an R to get in there, but I look at this as a win-win. If O'Donnell beats Castle, we send the GOP a message. If Castle wins and then wins the general, we get an R in there.

3 This is so depressing and unnecessary.  I love Mark Levin (especially when he made fun of Ken Duberstein for being a weasel and supporting Obama in '0 , but he is so far off base here.  And he's delusional for supporting O'Donnell.  Her loss in the general election would be doubly punishing: 1) it would cost Republicans a seat for procedural votes, 2) it would obscure the GOP tidal wave by allowing the MFM to focus on O'Donnell being the "flameout candidate" of "rightwing extremists."  Conservatives need to come up with a list of states in which it is perfectly acceptable to back moderate candidates (backed by solid reasons - liberal social culture, unions, machine politics, etc) and lay off the Castles and Kirks.  Obviously, Alaska is not on this list.

7 Ultimately, if Castle loses the primary, it is because Castle didn't take it seriously.  There will be much finger pointing and garment rending, but just bear that in mind - he ran a lousy primary campaign.

OK, whatever happened to voting for the primary candidate who best represented us, but then pulling together for the primary winner even if he wasn't our choice?

The problem with the "Castle because he's electable" rationale is that it saddles us with McLamey McMavericks who then stab us in the back.

*Of Course* we should all support Castle should he win the primary.

But if we can't express dissent and who we really favor in the primary, when can we?

Posted by: Curmudgeon at September 13, 2010 07:19 AM (ujg0T)

Control of the Senate is much, much more important than any one Senator's voting record.

Maybe she can win, I don't know. But still.

12 Word. We should reincorporate the Chicken TM here.

You mean like the House race?

BTW, Urquart or Rollins?  Not that it matters, since Carney will win because the Delaware Republican Party is currently experiencing heavy chafing from all those broken bones from what's left of a very well-worn chicken.

13 If Castle does not win, the GOP is going to need a Night Of The Long Knives soon. SOME (not all) Tea Partiers are full of themselves and think they can do more than they can. An O'Donnell victory here is a bridge too far and it cannot go unanswered.

Then tell your cobloggers to can the scorched earth character stuff on O'D.

Here's the thing:  none of you are going to sway the primary now.

Posted by: someone at September 13, 2010 07:28 AM (DfAwB)

16 @Curmudgeon: I agree that the primary is an opportunity to vote for who you think is most deserving.  The problem with eschewing the likely win for voting for the personal favorite is that we are never going to have 60 rock-solid conservative senators.

It's a catch-22: Yes, primaries are most peoples' best opportunity to express their views about a party's candidates.  However, if that candidate is unlikely to win the general, it makes every part of conservative governance a little harder (for procedural votes, etc).

The problem with all of this is that we're starting to sound like Democratic Underground, with "the hootin' and the hollerin', back and forth with the arguing."  Whatever happened to, "Just win, baby."?

Posted by: Mippilis at September 13, 2010 07:28 AM (VWhPF)

"Republicans will have to pull together to keep this senate seat out of Democratic hands"

You are completely blind to your hypocrisy.

O'D the loon, the lying ne'er-do-well, cannot be relied on and is unqualified for office.  The Tea Party has never represented themselves as team players with the GOP at quarterback, coach and owner.

Your position is the same you started with.  'I keep all the influence I have come-what-may".

18 10 Classic stupidity. Do we even know if O'Donnell is a true blue conservative? How can any true blue conservative remain so in fucking Delaware? How many times has McCain voted to HELP conservatives? About 3 times as often as he's hindered them. We just don't take note when he does.

Posted by: Chris R at September 13, 2010 07:29 AM (AO4qz)

19 If you have conservative principles, the primary is EXACTLY where you stand up for them. IF you lose, THEN you worry about holding your nose and voting for the winner. If you don't believe you can win with a conservative message in a state suffering from its highest employment in decades, then you might as well stop calling yourself conservative. Not unlike the CA GOP.

26 Loudest mouths on O'Donnels side? So I guess I just imagined the establishment and Castle supporters calling O'donnel "batshit crazy, insane, stupid, bigoted, ect ect".

The rhetoric is a thousand times louder in the Castle supporters. And all because someone dares to support a person based on principle and not power.

And for the record, I really don't care who wins. If Castle does, then our chances of taking the senate will be higher (although I honestly don't think it would make a speck of difference as long we don't have the presidency).

If O'Donnel wins, I think it would be the final nail in the coffin for the establishment power-hungry RINO's. They are not our leaders. They are our tyrants.

And their is NO doubt in my mind that if Castle loses, the first thing we will hear from him is not an endorsement for O'Donnel, but either a write-in campaign or endorsement of Coons out of vengeance. 32 So at this point it's about voting R and not D?... No need to know who's actually running and what their stance is on the issues?... No need to make an informed decision?... Vote R. That's the great political analysis.

This blogging thing sure is easy.

33 JC: Murkowski is not in the same league as Specter and Crist.  Crist, Specter, Chaffee are disgusting opportunists.  Murkowski is a party insider, but was still a useful Republican senator.

We already know enough about Kirk and Castle to know that they are not going to be the next Crist or Specter.  And, if they forsake conservatism to get re-elected in six years, then they can be primaried.  But for today, with Barack Obama in the WH, they can win in states where Republicans seemed doomed for a generation.   They are not so liberal that their likelihood of victory does not deserve our support.

35 Patrick Frey is the same guy who spilled a lot of digital ink insinuating that RS McCain is a racist, and who indulged in a petty dispute with Jeff Goldstein a year or two back.  In this particular instance I think Patterico came off easy.

And mind you I've been more in the Ace/Geraghty camp on this issue.  I think O'Donnell could be a disaster of a general election candidate.  I disagree with some of what Levin has been saying, but I ain't gonna criticize him for attacking Frey.

Posted by: Quilly Mammoth at September 13, 2010 07:46 AM (INEzN)

37 This O'Donnell chick sounds a little nutty and her lawsuit does not help.  Let's remember that Delaware is a rather blue state and there is NO way a spotty record will help with a victory.  Unless and until there is a conservative party, we have to make do with the GOP, that means, often, that we have to hold our noses over a RINO in order to get to where we need to go.  You NEVER heard Reagan browbeat Bob Michel even though he was the biggest RINO of them all.

Posted by: JCELEPHANT at September 13, 2010 07:47 AM (BWABm)

38 Fuck Mark Levin.

Every time I hear his name I'll think of Kos and Michael Moore because that's the level of logic he's displayed in his arguments here and in his ad homs.

Just the pure number of complete lies and false claims in his post about powerline should strip him of any credibility.  The fact that Riehl tries to gloss over that and say, hey don't worry if he's calling you a goatfucker, he's done good stuff before is bullshit.  All of sudden, how much you think a person has done for a movement should give them a free pass on lie and impugning others?

20$ says Riehl is being paying by O'Donnell.  Considering his prices, I might be able to buy him off with an additional 20.

Posted by: inyourheadZOMBIE at September 13, 2010 07:48 AM (OKbxw)

Castle is better than a Dem.  I wouldn't argue anything to the contrary.  Even a bad RINO-y R is still an R, and majority party status counts BIG TIME.

That being said, I'm a fan of making the RINOs squeal, and letting them know there is a price for being a RINO on big ticket votes.  Maybe a much tougher than expected primary can be a warning to Castle, maybe not.

Even still, O'Donnell worries me.  The stories I hear sound bad, and there has been nothing to explain it away.  She really might just be an unelectable nutbar.  I'd rather the RINO be the unelectable nutbar, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  Real life is complicated like that.

Other claims attribute to her the assertion that Castle supporters broke into her house in 2008, but O'Donnell never said that, she simply said in response to a question that she didn't know who did it.  This is the problem I have with the "nuts" defense; spin replaces facts, and once the image of the candidate is created in the public mind, there is no way to undo it.

72 Chris R 13 If Castle does not win, the GOP is going to need a Night Of The Long Knives soon. SOME (not all) Tea Partiers are full of themselves and think they can do more than they can. An O'Donnell victory here is a bridge too far and it cannot go unanswered. The obvious question after the reference to June 30, 1934 is the nature of the Nacht der langen Messer you envisage. I will make a provisional assumption that you do not have in mind something like the "Law Regarding Measures of State Self-Defense" that gave legal cover to those events. But, what do you intend to do with those of us Conservative and TEA Party rabble? Are we to be expelled from the Republican Party? Are there going to be "self-criticism" sessions where we are forced to confess to committing "Rightist Deviationism" and crimes against the Party? Are you going to impose fines on us to fund "moderate" Republican candidates we disagree with, since after any purge there will be no contributions or campaign work done voluntarily? In some ways, the enemy is right. The Republican Party is in the midst of a civil war, and has been in one since the beginning of this century. "What kind of GOP do we want to be a part of?" in a way does encapsulate it, but Rasmussen's formulation of the battle between the people and the "Political Class" is also part of it. The TEA Party is rightfully suspicious of the Institutional Republican structure, because they have a long and detailed track record of both contemptuously opposing the Republican base and ignoring the rules when it suits them. Any sort of purge will be the final straw. If the TEA Party and the Conservative base give up on the Republican Party, it will guarantee that the Republican Party will be moving in with the Whigs. Yeah, it means that the enemy will control electoral politics for whatever remaining span of time that they continue to exist. But, if there is to be mandatory RINO-ism, it means the same thing. An O'Donnell victory here is a bridge too far. It seems to be the latest meme in the Republican Party to believe that they have the divine right to over-rule the vote of the Republican Party membership if it votes against the will of the Party structure in open elections. Most recently we have seen it in Alaska. Here in Colorado, the Republican Party has fought against any grass-roots efforts for over a decade. This year the National party has gotten into the act. We selected our gubernatorial candidate in our primary, and the Republican Governors' Assn. has cut off funds because they do not approve of him. I am not in Delaware. But I am not alone here in Colorado in being furious with the Delaware Republican Party using Democrat tactics and unconstitutional laws, filing McCain-Feingold charges against a Republican candidate and the TEA Party. I rather suspect that TEA Party people all over the country will be watching the election tomorrow and the aftermath carefully. If Castle either does not endorse O'Donnell if she wins the actual votes, if the Delaware and/or National Republican Party do not support her in the general if she wins the actual votes, or if Castle does do a 3rd party or write in run [if such is allowed] either with or without a wink and nod from from the Party; we will be that much closer to seeing them give up on the Republicans. If that break happens, this year, this election; we are close enough that the enemy will be turned out in November regardless, albeit perhaps not as thoroughly as we could otherwise. But in that case, soon thereafter the Institutional Republican Party will be either the third of three major parties, or will merge with the Democrats. So if there are any Republican Chekisti about, and they feel froggy, go ahead and jump. Just keep in mind that you might actually get what you seem to wish for. Subotai Bahadur

73 Are we to be expelled from the Republican Party?

Were you ever part of the Republican party? Because it seems you're coming to the party late with no constructive input or curiosity about the candidates you're pushing, and you're out to collect scalps for people who have not done anything meriting excommunication and have been party loyalists for years. Specter and Crist deserved to go. Murkowski had an acceptable challenger. It makes no sense to go after Lazio or Castle, except it looks like Democrats are running crackpots with slight records to keep their seats.

74 If the TEA Party and the Conservative base give up on the Republican Party

In NY, the preferred Republican candidate has the local Conservative Party's approval, but still people are talking about crazy-ass Paladino, a rich Buffalo developer who has only given to Democrats over the past decade.

Subotai Bahadur

Always respect your view point.

Haven't seen you on BC comment threads lately, but lately I've been too busy involved with DE primary anyway.

78 RE: #74 Tattoo De Plane Were you ever part of the Republican party? Because it seems you're coming to the party late with no constructive input or curiosity about the candidates you're pushing, and you're out to collect scalps for people who have not done anything meriting excommunication and have been party loyalists for years. Just for the record, I have been an active Republican for decades, this year was the first time in over 20 years I have not been a delegate to our State Convention, and I was one of the three people who ran George H. W. Bush's 1988 campaign in my county. We had a higher margin of victory in our small mountain county than Dukakis had in Pueblo, which is one of the enemy's 3 electoral strongholds. If you will note in my # 73 [which you are quoting], I was responding to a direct threat in #13 to have the Republican Party commit a "Night of the Long Knives" on the TEA Party. That specificly styled threat has historical connotations, which you may or may not be aware of. And any attempt to carry it out will have consequences. You may believe that the Republican Party will be better off without either TEA Party or Conservative members. And you may believe in Chris R.'s formulation as to how to get rid of them. Y'all have good luck with that if you get your wish. I would offer that it would be worthwhile to look at electoral and legislative victories and losses for the last, say, 4 years; and count up how many of each were the TEA Party responsible for, and how many of each "moderate" "Party Loyalists" have been responsible for. 79 #78 always right Thanks. I have not been over at BC for a while because I have been busy dealing with some family medical problems. Rumors that I left because of the "Whiskey affair" are totally false. Still turn up occasionally at the Rott. Since medical things are getting better, I hope to get back to causing hate and discontent in a number of places, including BC. I just saw the "Night of the Long Knives" comment, and I do not respond well to threats. Subotai Bahadur

Levin has been descending into Michael Savage territory for a little while now.

I could almost forgive the Tea Party for giving us Angle and letting "negro dialect" Dingy Harry stay in the Senate another 6 years, but if they hand us O'Donnell they can go to hell. Just a bunch of childish whiners raging at "the establishment", whoever the fuck that is, and demanding the Federal government go back to its scope and influence around the time of, say, the Whiskey Rebellion.

Wow, I just read this, just now.

This is a phenominally idiotic post, Gabe.

Be more passive aggressive next time?

I was responding to a direct threat in #13 to have the Republican Party commit a "Night of the Long Knives" on the TEA Party.

Hitler knocked off Rohm as the last step to securing his own dictatership and complete power within the government (winning the support of the military to secceed Hindenburg as President while still Prime Minister).

1) that kind of thing doesn't work figuratively. You have to actually wack everyone. Else, they tend to not cooperate and play figurative-dead but argue back and keep insisting that they're not dead, and not mortally wounded, but in fact getting better, and truth be told  feeling quite well now.

2) If the GOP tried something like that now, they'd implode their own last hope with it. It would be like if Hitler killed all the SA leadership on the night of the Beer Hall Putsch.

Which... sounds like something republicans might do, actually.

Even money.

84 I don't see how anybody can say that O'Donnell has not been smeared; in fact, one of the chief arguments against her seems to be that she can be smeared.

I have no idea if she would be a good senator, but she would not need to be very good at all to be better than a 72-year-old nest-feathering statist career congressman.

A related aside: if the GOP gains a majority in congress that behaves like the last GOP majority did, they are sunk. In that case we would (hopefully) see a third-party surge that might keep the Democrats in power as it coalesces. So why tempt the old liars, crooks and hypocrites who run the party by sending more RINOs to Washington?

85 Just a few points...First off anyone who likes to be called "the Great One"and lets Hannity kiss his...ring, is an arrogant SOB.  Of course Levin likes O'Donnell, she probably is even more in awe and slobbering than Hannity.  Second, what proof do we have that O'Donnell is even a Conservative Because she says so?  Oh yeah, I'm going to base a vote on that.  She's already been caught in lies, what makes anyone believe this true blue Conservative line?  Third,  the Tea Party does not support O'Donnell.  The Tea Party Express does  And they do not represent the whole movement.  For reasons I won't get into now, as a Tea Partier I personally don't want them representing me.  At any rate, can we quit babbling the LSM line about the "Tea Party" support?  It isn't accurate.

86 Included in the Beats' impressive packaging are two Duracell AAA batteries. I hadn't installed them. I removed the headphones and searched all over for a battery compartment. Again: Nothing. I was perplexed. And charley-horsed.
