Democratic National Governors Association...We're Not Dead Yet
— DrewM

Oh yes you are.

As Dan McLaughlin (aka Baseballcrank) points out, this isn't the kind of thing winners put out in July....

(Belated content warning for some PG-13 cursing. Might be frowned upon at work)

The Cook Political Report has the map of what spots are open and how they are shaking out at the moment.

The Washington Post also has a breakdown of some of the most competitive races.

The Democratic Governors Association raised record money in the second quarter of this year only to be trounced by their Republican counterparts.

The most obvious disparity between the Republican and Democratic associations right now is their fundraising. From April through June, the DGA broke its record by raising $9 million -- but the RGA collected $19 million.

And why are Governorships so important? Redistricting is coming following this year's census.

One of the first areas where the changes in the governors' mansions could be felt will be in the redistricting wars that will break out next year. Ayers said redistricting presents a 15- to 26-House-seat opportunity depending on who controls the redistricting machinery in the states. That alone could offset whatever happens in House races this November.

But the implications go beyond that. Reapportionment and redistricting will affect the shape of the House through much of the coming decade. If Republicans take over the House and control enough governorships in key states next year, they could use the redistricting process to virtually lock in a majority that could last for several election cycles.

A second area where the outcomes will be felt is on the presidential race for 2012. Republicans are determined to create as many obstacles as possible to Obama's expected re-election bid, and that begins with capturing as many governor's races as possible.

Speaking of Republican Governors...Chris Christie is going national this weekend.

@jaketapper Looking forward to doing my first Sunday show with you on #ThisWeek

Insert your own Jake and The Fatman jokes here.

Added: As rallying the troops messages goes, the DGA stringing a bunch of old movie clips together is pretty weak tea and as one of Dan's Twitter followers notes probably not legal. Studios would have shut a Republican version down by now.

My movie interpretation of the Democrats at the state and federal level this November. Another mild-content warning for PG-13 cursing at the end.

How accurate is Cook normally? I presume his toss-ups really are, though I know for most of the State Media toss-up means likely R.

How pathetic.  Appealing to redistricting directly would have been much smarter.

27 There is more martial imagery in that 88 seconds than has been seen in the entire previous 40 years of the Democratic party.

If they had had this kind of warrior spirit all along, Vietnam would be the 51st state now; Iraq would have been over in 2006; and things would be wrapping up in Afghanistan, as an exhausted enemy retreated back, saying "those Democrats are the worst of them--unbreakable"...

Maybe we should pass out GOP 2012 buttons to the Taliban and dress them up in black polyester suits...then perhaps we will see results...

39 Anyway, I don't think getting the Governors is as important as getting the House and maybe the Senate.

Governors don't do redistricting, the individual State legislatures do that.

But the Dems have shown that it is also important to get the position of AG and election commissioner. Wasn't it Stalin who said it isn't important who gets to vote, but who gets to count the votes.

LOL, that scene from "Network" and the line "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore" was used EXTENSIVELY in 1994 when Newt's minions last rolled the House and took 54 seats. I can see why they cut the video just before he said it.

They also left out Bluto's line "Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no" for obvious reasons. But the video still reminds us of the line. Nitwits.

I think that this situation requires a futile and meaningless gesture done on someone's part and the DNGA is just the group to do it! Now who's with me?  Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

O/T department of government irony at work. My passport expired, I got the form to renew it before the fees went up, sent it in. Just got it back, it was addressed to the wrong address because the form I had listed the wrong address because someone at the post office had the wrong forms. So I call to find out what to do because no way am I paying the higher fee for a govt. screw up. Finding the phone number to the passport agency is near impossible, then you have to listen to about 5 minutes of automated messages, but, and here's where the irony comes in, you hear the welcome message in English and SPANISH and one of the first choices you make is whether to hear the rest in English or SPANISH.

I'm applying for a frickin US passport, don't you think that my ass had better speak English by the time I am eligible to apply for a US passport?

Maybe it is just me, but I find this wrong on so many levels.

Utah is solid R motherfuckers!

Well, I think we have the solid R thing pretty much totally locked up here in Nebraska.  Our Republican govenor is running as an incumbent, whereas on the Democrat side the guy who barely pulled off a primary win against a couple of other equally worthless liberals had to drop out of the race about 10 minutes after he won the primary, at the insistence of the head of the Democratic Party here in Nebraska.

They finally managed to convince some no name schmuck with zero political experience and virtually no financing whatsoever to run as a sacrificial lamb.  They'll put up a couple of hundred grand, run a token campaign and get completely crushed.

Nebraska is a pretty conservative state to begin with - please, don't ask me to explain Nelson.

95 : Lt. Gov. Diane Denish (D) is struggling to separate herself from the unpopular administration of Gov. Bill Richardson (D) while Martinez is running as an outsider who will shake up the system. Polls show the race is still neck-and-neck, but unless Denish can find a way to change the topic away from Richardson this could be perilous for Democrats in the fall.

Good luck with that to Denish (not really).  Dollar Bill can't keep his mouth shut for five minutes.  If we have any sense, and I doubt we do, we will vote in Susanna Martinez.  Hell, in NM she ought to win just because her name is Martinez.

I had two Nations on my Az to Wyo route.
I'd drink 16oz Buds and fill em' back up and toss them out with the hundreds of others lining the highway. One evening on a return trip a man was picking up cans. If he shook em' and they splashed he drank them. I never threw out another can.

(Funny, nothing like "French or German" in the CA list....)

Press "2" for Spanish at the Passport Office and you probably get instructions asking where you want the passport delivered, and asking if you'll be there tomorrow. Comes with a voter-registration form, a welfare application, deed to a house and a "tell-a-friend" card, which allows you to get instant US passports for 25 of your closest buds.

Actually, in California, we force the unfortunate whose property the former novice dormitory for Mission Dolores (in Fremont) happened to be found on to pay for the archeologists to come dig it up. When this is over, the private school involved (not a large one) had spent the funds they meant to use for a sports area and quite a lot of operating capital - which meant they had to issue fewer scholarships the next year.

It's one of those glorious "unfunded mandates" people get so exercised about while running for office.

180 Er. I meant "Mission San Jose." Mission Dolores is in San Francisco.

Both are Dominican, that's why I get them crossed up.

182 I've often wondered if the reason that Liberals like Radical Islam so much isn't because they secretly WANT to live in a society where everyone is told exactly what they can and cannot do.  I mean, think about it - that's essentially what they are trying to turn this country into.  They all seem to have Daddy issues - as in Daddy was never around, or Daddy never disciplined us, etc.

The problem for Liberals is that deep down, they don't trust themselves to make the right decision, and they are scared that they will make a mistake and no one will be there to save them from themselves.  They automatically assume that everyone else is the same way.  They assume that EVERYONE need to be told what to do.

That's why they can't stand Christians and/or Christianity - most Christian denominations ASSUME you're going to make mistakes, and expect you to learn from those mistakes and do better the next time.  But you are ultimately held responsible for those mistakes.  Same thing with Conservatism - if you make a lousy decision, well, too bad for you - pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again.

I think that a lot of Liberals actually THINK that they wouldn't mind being under a type of Islamic law - they truly don't understand what that means, but they like the IDEA of it.  THAT is what we are fighting here - people who want to be taken care of and not held responsible for bad decisions.  Children, basically......

According to Rasmussen last week, Brady was barely edging out Quinn -- I don't see how on earth Quinn isn't getting blow out of the water, as we've lost pretty close to a quarter million jobs in this state since Chicago messiah took office (although, to be fair, our woes go much further back -- still, they are being excerbated).

Plus Kirk is trending down and is about level with Gino right now (according to Rasmussen).

Now, the senate race I can understand (neither canidate is really campaigning, nor are either very popular with anyone but their particular cronies) -- but if my fellow LOLers vote that fuckstick bastard Quinn back into office, after the stunts he's pulled in the last few months and his connections to Blago (with a smarmy smirk too -- the ^#$%^#&%&^cker; he knows what he's doing and doesn't care, he's above the freaking law it seems, @#$%^#$%##$%4er), then truly my state has no freaking hope.  We will have truly reached critical mass idiocracy.

@185,

Teresa,

Yes.....I think it comes down to judgement. They don't care for religon because they don't want to ever have to think about not only taking responsiblity for thier behavior, but also they don't not want their behavior to be considered outside the social norm.

When it comes to Islam. I think they only look at it from the prespective of revenge. They don't want to live under Islamic Rule, but they want you to live under it...Why?...Because they dispise the American population, and to them it is "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

As soon as these people realize that they too, will have to live under Sharia Law, all of a sudden they will go back to the defualt position of Seperation of Church and State, and if it is too late? Well just like what happends when you slap your childs hand away from the cookie jar right before dinner, they are gonna throw a hissy fight any two year will be envious of, and go on a violent rampage that makes the Spanish Inquisition look like a dispute in the local playground Sandbox.

185 Cook Political Report has AZ Governorship as a tossup?  Where Jan Brewer is like running 70% popularity.  Something not right about that.

Yeah you sorta missed WW 3.25 I guess....

Yeah, I couldnÂ’t take it anymore and stopped reading anything remotely to do with that video. I just went to the link @156 and IÂ’m kind of glad I missed it now. IÂ’ve been on the receiving end of some really mean shit here for no apparent reason, but I doubt that individual will be banned. Instead my head is probably on the block.

On the plus side, I’ve made a couple of really good friends here that are now part of my “real” life. And, even though the relationship didn’t work out, I also dated someone I met here.

IÂ’ll just be sad to see this place change. But, I understand, AceÂ’s house, AceÂ’s rules.

Jane - I was kinda flummoxed by that too.. but then I got to thinking that there are SO MANY Dems in Cook county that almost any poll is going to get lots of them.

The real key to November is how many of them are gonna get off their asses and vote, and how many Republicans are going to vote.  Turnout will be the key.  All the polls showing an enthusiasm gap lead us to believe the GOP will get out the vote better.. we just gotta make sure that happens.

188 189 It's all rather worrisome. I think people are riding roller coasters of emotions right now due to world affairs, & it's making some of the dialogue harsher &/or seem crueler than it is. We don't know what's going to happen, & that sometimes comes through on the blog. (Not to mention warring political philosophies within the conservative movement.)

189 The Dems are really scraping the bottom of the barrel.  I know that because they sent ME email asking for money.  The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sent me email begging for my hard earned cash so they can take more of my hard earned cash and give it to people sitting on their duff.

Fat chance.

191 The Dems will do their damnedest to steal November.  Please don't think this is a done deal for the Republicans or conservatives.  Remember how many times people said, "Wow, Obama is doomed now"?  First it was Jeremiah Wright, then meetings with Iran with no preconditions,  choosing Brainless Joe as a running mate (that was a big one, everyone was sure Obama was doomed then), the Joe the Plumber incident...and he won.

Gird your loins.

190 Things will, I think, start heating up soon -- well, not the senatorial race, at least not down here.  The only one who seems even be paying attention to down here is Brady (only commercials I've heard on the radio have come from his campaign).

I think the Republicans are sitting on top of a golden opportunity in this state -- they could have gone with more, but of course...

194 Democratic National Governors Association...We're Not Dead Yet

No, you're not, but you're standing at a point where the high ground is more than a mile away, the water in the bay behind you is beginning to recede, and your "leader" insists on continuing to deposit land mines along the path to safety.

195 Charlie Cook needs to update that map, now. Oregon, Maine, and Maryland are all polling slightly GOP pickups, he could at LEAST list them as TOSSUPS. GOP 35-DEM14-IND1 is probably the breakdown post election
