— Gabriel Malor This past week several big companies, including Caterpillar, Verizon, and AT&T, announced that ObamaCare would cost them millions of dollars this year. To pay for it they variously suggested layoffs and benefits reductions. Analysts suggest that the total first-quarter hit to S&P 500 firms will be $4.5 billion.
Well, Democrats can't stand to have their precious economy-destroying healthcare program criticized in its very first week, so they've announced an "investigation" into the claims. Late yesterday, the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigation sent letters to the CEOs of AT&T, Caterpillar, Deere & Co, and Verizon asking them to appear for a hearing on their claims. In the letters, Waxman and Stupak ask for company documents including accounting analyses and the internal emails of all "senior company officials" related to the projected costs of ObamaCare. How serious are they? The letter actually defines "senior company officials."
Power Line has a copy of one of the letters.
Not content with their victory, Democrats won't rest until they've beaten down anyone who points out the devastation caused by their anti-prosperity policies. This will be as much of an "investigation" as the Democrats' demonization of oil company CEOs last summer or Toyota execs more recently.

"Obamacare = XXX."
One that includes the full direct payments of both the employee and the employer - as well as the per capita slice of the associated overhead for complying with the regulations and shuffling the paperwork.

We are entering a dangerous and frightening era when Congress and Osama Obama are held accountable for nothing, and those who oppose their traitorous schemes are demonized.
This could get ugly. I hope it comes to a head soon, however. The nation can't take a whole lot more of this shit.

This may be a trap for the Dims. These public corporations are required to do these things by securities law. They are legally liable if they do not make these adjuctments, and there is not a thing that Congress can do about it, with the narrowing majority that the Dims have. They can't tinker with the bill anymore.
This could be very interesting, since the companies are primarily liable to their stockholders. Republicans can use this to attack Obamacare and help drive it further down into the shitter.

By all means, Waxman (and Stupak - now that's too good to be true) - hold show-trials all summer with major CEOs telling the public that they have to lay off workers, cut benefits and raise prices because the numbers of ObamaCare were totally made-up bullshit.
That's OK, Congress will just pass a law making those illegal, too. Or moving your company overseas. Laws can fix everything.
Cap and Trade and Amnesty are going to look so much better with a double-dip recession and 20% unemployment.

Both. It was designed as a 100 mt shot, but scaled back to 50 mt for the Tsar Bomba test because the Russian scientists were literally scared of it and what it would do.
Keep in mind, our most powerful test ever was the Ivy Mike shot at 10.4 mt in 1952.
At any rate, the Tsar Bomba was and still is the most powerful test ever.

Let me make sure I am getting this right:
Dear Corporate Demon Spawn,
It has come to our attention that your accounting and subsequent management decisions that impact your established, profitable company do not match the fairy-tale gumdrop land fantasy results that that we conspired to get by fraudulent accounting methods from the CBO.
Such insolence, especially in contradiction to our most sacred population control health care law, cannot be tolerated. Kindly present yourselves before our board of inquiry and be sure to turn over all of your accounting records to the $16,000 new IRS auditors before your arrival so that we can be certain that your mistakes will be properly noted and prosecuted.
Did you, a successful corporate executive, actually think that you could defy the will of His Majesty Obama? Who are you to question the Federal Government, founders of such magnificent institutions such as Medicaid, Medicare, the Postal Service and Amtrak! We even own GM, Chrysler and the majority of US banks! Again, I say, who are YOU to question us, your elected betters! You think that just because your financial analysis uses that unfathomable concept of 'math', with all your 'addition', 'subtraction' and 'income minus expense equals profit' nonsense; that you could question the projections of your Superiors? Ha! If your pathetic company were to run up mere millions in deficits, your shareholders would relegate you to obscurity! But, we, the Federal Government have deficits of trillions! I bet your 'math' doesn't even count that high! Not only have we not gone into bankruptcy, but we continue to spend away like we've we just got a free home from "Extreme Makeover". Far from obscurity, we command the networks to cover us each night with fawning adoration while the masses continue to elect us!
KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!!
Love and Kisses.

You've even voted for the Republicans and/or Democrats who have done it to you. (...and those Republicans weren't all 'RINO's'.)
Freedom is not a menu. You can't choose Social Security over Welfare and expect to remain free. You can't advocate for the restrictions on the freedoms of people you don't like while expecting your own freedoms to remain protected.
morally, ethically, you can't expect to remain free by opposing social progressivism while supporting social conservatism. (Two sides of the same socialist coin and a false dilemma/false choice.)

183 Past about 9 megatons you don't get any greater effect. The blast just blows up through the atmosphere. We never bothered with anything bigger than 9 mt for that reason. In fact, several small bombs exploding close together is more effective than one big one againt area targets.
Posted by: steevy at March 27, 2010 06:48 PM (44AGF)
Thats why we went to using nukes in the 400 k range dropping them at multiple locations within a selected target from our bombers and then the MIRV capability with our ICBM's because the damage was many times exponentially greater and more efficient than one huge yield weapon. The Russians followed suit shortly after.

Something funny to me is that they want the workpapers and emails discussing this stuff. One thing I've learned in 2 years doing internships is that if you don't know what the hell you're reading it's going to take forever to figure it out. It's hard enough when you're inside a department to understand all the workpapers when you don't work with them personally, I can't imagine how much fun some poli sci majored interns are going to have going through that crap for the committee members. The fact that they want the emails and workpapers makes me suspect it's a gotcha game where they'll be trolling for phrases to pull out of context.

I bet that 100,000 signatures to recall Stupak could be gathered by next Friday. I no longer know no one in Michgan.

You're wrong. Communists love capitalism. The inner party elites in Communist Russia lived like kings and were practically drowning in expensive western goods while their people were getting fed by western grain silos and waiting in line in subzero temperatures for hours on end for potatoes, light bulbs and toilet paper. They only hate the ones they dont have a direct line to the udders on so they can suckle the milk directly from the teat of the cash-cow, like the vampires they are. Thats why they love the Unionized industries that the SEIU and the UAW parasitically prey on. It keeps them in power and swimming in cash and victims.
Progressives are parasites on the flesh of humanity and without the provider, they would cease to exist. Communism and Socialism works pretty well right up until the point you run out of other peoples money.

The problem is, each and every regressive honestly believes they will be in the good graces and in the sanctum of the inner party somehow just like their beloved Al Gore, Sean Penn, Nancy Pelosi and Janeane Garofallo. In other words, each and every one them honestly believes they'll get to be camp guards.
Little do they know, they will be scrounging around in the wasteland competing for meals just like the rest of the proletarians. Not to mention, a purge in a liberal regime tends to happen from the top down, see Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.

Few things--
1. Is there even a doubt in anyone's mind that Obama will try to pack the court a la FDR?
2. Am I seriously the only person to see that TDC was mocking ace?? Did no one read the other contenders?? Ezra Klein, Nate Silver, and Yglesias? Srsly. When they'RE saying bloggers/personalities that are smart, it's like saying Jessica Simpson is smart because she finally figured out what Chicken of the Sea is.
3. And most important.....BUTLER BULLDOGS!!!

Regarding recess appointments.
This from Mesiahs mouth to our ears:
"Most of the men and women whose appointments I am announcing today were approved by Senate committees months ago, yet still await a vote of the Senate. At a time of economic emergency, two top appointees to the Department of Treasury have been held up for nearly six months. I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government."

Not only that but I just read where Virginias Feb. job losses were the highest in the nation even though we are right next to D.C., the government is doing nothing but expanding and we practically have all of the major military bases. Plus, Norfolk was just notified it was losing a carrier group to Florida causing thousands of job losses in the tidewater area and severely affecting the economy there.
I'm sure that has nothing to do with the the people of Va. electing a Republican governor and his AG filing suit against them for Constitutional infringement after Ogabe's commiecare was signed into law..
Nah. of course not, what am I thinking.

Buffett is a flaming hypocritical douchebag. During the campaign that asshole kept telling everyone who would listen that in 2008 his secretaries tax rate was higher than his. That was the same year the douchebag was telling us that the death tax was a good thing.
It was also the same year that the douche gave $40 Billion to the Gates foundation which moved his tax rate to 0 and also made $40 Billion of his money not subject to the death tax.

You should see how willfiully ignorant some of the papers here in Canada are. Even the local tabloid, whose editorial stance is generally pretty conservative, posted this piece of O-credulity about Frum/the GOP/Health Control toay.
My favorite passage:
Many Canadians, perhaps most, have been bemused by the tenor of the debate down south. ObamaÂ’s plan extends health care to millions more Americans, but it is a far cry from a universal, state-run system.
To call it socialism, let alone a dictatorial abuse of power, or an invitation to “death panels,” all terms being bandied about online and on the talk shows, is worse than stupid. These are grotesque fabrications and exaggerations.
--Yeah, the concept of the socialist camel's nose under the tent eludes this guy, and he completely ignores many Democrats being on the record as saying this is a set-up for single-payer. No curiosity, no skepticism at all, just believe what the Democrats and your media colleagues parrot.

As we've seen in the Soviet Union, central planning and free speech just don't go together.
Actually, it's getting almost impossible to say anything. You could argue that the execs were simply on board with Obama's policy that "now is not the time to make profits."
Anyway, in the future I'm sure we'll see a lot of happy pronouncements about just how much costs are going down for companies all across the country.
And they'll carry just as much weight as Duranty's pulitzer-prize winning reports in the NYT of record grain harvests in the Ukraine.

What I want to know is this: what if he sees his CinC or Congress violating the Constitution? Is he ready to go to the mat then? Or is he one of the mindless military robots the lefty wackos seem to think dominate our forces? The latter is a bullshit notion, of course, but there might be a few. But if he's in that category, I suppose he would dutifully go after Americans who are trying to save their nation.
I wouldn't want to be a high-ranking officer when Osama Obama's intentions to destroy this country, which he hates with a passion, finally sink in. That would be a hell of a moment. What will they do?
I have unreserved admiration for our Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines (in any order you like). I would hate like hell to see them lined up against me. I think that may be what the Traitor-in-Chief wants to see.
If that day comes, and the Chicago Jesus issues the order, I would not want to be in the military. They'll have to decide who's right, and the answer would go against everything they -- and we -- have believed about the character of our presidents.

I gotcha. (I had thought you meant a more chaotic, no holds barred style) But, aren't those the sorts of tactics that any side would use, if they were serious about the fight? - and there's no question that the left is deadly serious. In any event, the left is much more top-heavy than the right and much more susceptible to such ROE.

I suspect it could easily end up as their 'Colonel North' moment.
For those who are 'new', the Democrats tried to make a spectacle of Colonel North during the Reagan years about Iran Contra -- It totally blew up in their face and that was with the left wing PRESSSSident controlling all of the media.
It's big gamble and its highly likely the Obamacrats would get totally ripped to shreds in today's YouTube/blog environment if one or more of the CEOs stood up for themselves and their respective companies and Obamacare. It's not like the Obamacrats can totally scare anyone into believing they'll continue to control both houses of Congress next year....
Plus, thanks to the Supreme Court, corporations can now play a bigger role in political contributions -- or have the Obamacrats forgot this minor fact?

How does one go about researching a 2000+ page bill?
Specifically, I'm wondering if insurance companies are specifically barred from offering policies deemed unacceptable by congress.
Say I like the insurance that I currently have (individual market) and want to keep it.
I like my current coverage so much that I'm willing to tell the IRS to go pound sand and fine me (good luck collecting) for not having "acceptable" coverage, if it comes to that.
I understand that the insurance companies are going to be required to provide 3 types of super-expensive, guaranteed issue, loaded full of bullshit mandates "insurance" benefit packages deemed "acceptable" by the HHS.
Is there anything that prevents them (legally) from continuing to offer policies that are underwritten for risk, have annual and lifetime caps, high deductibles, no first dollar coverage for aromatherapy etc.?
Or is it the case that all policies, must conform with whatever imbecilic mandates flatulate their way from D.C.? Does this mean that my contract with my provider is nullified by this bill?
Where would be a good starting point to get a handle on this?
I understand that legal considerations aside it might not make much economical sense for my current provider to keep offering this sort of coverage (individual is a small market....for now) but I want to know whether or not they could if they so chose to.
Dunno, there might be a niche to be filled by a growing population that are not receiving health benefits through the work-place and yet would be more than willing to forgo any subsidy from the government that would rope them into government care...

@45: "Please name a product that a Communist country invented that you wanted."
AK-47, SVD Dragunov, T-34/85, MiG-25, etc.

Yeah, I've been kinda squicked out by this stuff since that funding was put into the spendulus bill last year.
It's going to be really interesting next time I go to the doctor's office and they try to get a history from me.
Official answer to every question: None of your goddamn business Helen Jones-Kelley!!!
Okay, can we talk now off the record?

It was never invention that was really the big problem. Communist countries - Russia and China in particular - never lacked for genius. They had more than enough brilliant people to come up with important inventions. The problem with Communism (and general leftist political ideas) is that they can never generate the industries necessary to support some new invention. Complex industries cannot be willed into existence by some central committees. Industrial development (new industries or adaptation of old ones) is something that it takes thousands of individual trials and errors to get right, to build a rigorous and flexible industry. It's these dynamic requirements that leftists can't understand and that leftist/centralized theories ignore.
There were lots of theoretical inventions in the old USSR, but it was almost impossible to utilize them or develop them far beyond mere ideas - just as the Ukraine grew enough food for everyone, but half of it would rot on the way to market, because of the sorry, static state of Soviet industries.
Leftists are staticists. They live in an unchanging, static world, where nothing happens, really, until the government does it, and then it only does exactly what the government wanted it to do. These are simple-minded people and they generate simple-minded structures.

"We request your personal testimony at this hearing."
As my Dad used to say, "people in hell might request ice water, but that don't mean they are gonna get it."

I have some Soviet era diesel model airplane engines that are pretty good, a Soviet era Spetnaz watch that was cheap and durable, my Makarov pistol is reliable, and the Chinese AK-47 is pretty well made.

Thanks for reminding us, The SCOTUS gave corporate America a weapons to use aganist Obamacare. This is why the President is so sore about it, they can donate and put out ads against his policies.

As if their generation isn't irresponsible enough already, and as if it doesn't encourage them to be even more irresponsible by extending their unemployment benefits, now they will continue to receive healthcare under their parents' policy until they are 26, also.
They're well on their way to becoming the Eloy that we read about in H.G.Wells' The Time Machine, a generation of wastrels, reminiscent of the generation that gave us lazy hippies.
To think that the scatterbrained imbeciles known as 52%ers replaced The Greatest Generation, and now we'll have to contend with the even more irresponsoble behavior of their even lazier children. The word, decadent, comes to mind.

Social security -- Gone. Replaced by personal responsibility and families taking care of their own.
Medicare / Obamacare -- Gone! replaced by the Free Market and the realization that eventually everyone's gotta die.
Gov't Sponsored Welfare / Food Stamps -- GONE! Replaced by private, church-based, and (depending upon the individual state) state-gov't based charity.
Huge Federal Bureaucracy -- GONE!!! Replaced by people with real and productive jobs.
The only question is, as we transit between here and there -- is the transition gonna be ugly and painful and peaceful -- or VERY ugly and QUITE painful and NOT peaceful.
The choice is theirs.
If you're a believer, prayer is recommended.

I live in Waxman's district (30th District of California). Please send his conservative challenger, Ari David, some $$. Imagine liberal heads exploding if Waxman actually gets voted out.
