I've seen the movie several times, and I feel the same way you do: Little Bill deserved what he got, and then some. Yet...William Munny himself was no saint, so who was he to pass judgement? This is the whole point of Unforgiven, I think -- that the hammer of fate falls on the just and unjust alike.

12 I love that movie. It made me an Eastwood fan when before I never bothered watching anything he did.

Another great scene is from the Outlaw Josie Wales. Eastwood and the young kid get found by a couple of guys who are going to turn them in for the reward. Those guys end up dead, of course, and the kid says "should we bury them?". Josie puts in a tobacco chew, spits on the bodies and says..."Buzzards gotta eat too."

No question, Bill needed to be put down, like the rabid dog he was. And like Bill, a rabid dog may not deserve what's happening to him.

Bill, and the rabid dog, are positive hazards to those around him. Bill's an active threat, and needs to be stopped.

But Muny's not passing judgment on Bill's character. He himself doesn't have the standing to do that; he knows he's no better than Bill. Maybe, given their respective past, Bill's the better man in the balance. (I  can't remember what Bill's past was; he may have been the same kind of thug Muny was. "Got nothing to do with it" now.)

Muny knows what needs to be done, but knows that he, too, is...unforgiven.

Simply a great western. My favorite, along with The Outlaw Josey Wales. There are worse ways to spend an afternoon than watching Unforgiven.  Give Pale Rider a spin, too, while you're at it.

42 Don't want to be the buzzkill, just food for thought:  As much fun as it is to up old Clint Eastwood flicks, favorite lines and scenes, this is the kind of thing that liberal "progs" go nuts over when they see it on a conservative website.  That is, they cite it as proof that conservatives would happily shoot them for virtually any reason.

While some of you don't have any problem with that hasty conclusion, I gotta say that this risks losing the propaganda war for the large block of independent or uncommitted voters.  If the Left--with the aid of its allies in the MSM--succeed in painting most conservatives as gun-crazed nuts, it makes it easier for congress to start stripping away things you don't want to lose.

And they'll do it a little at a time, so as to avoid stirring up enough opposition to matter (not that congresswhores give a goddamn about what voters think anyway, eh?).  Eventually a guy with a badge and a court order comes for your [computer, guns, kids, fill in the blank], at which point you have only two choices:  submit, or shoot it out.  In which case you'll be killed.

In a gallant cause, perhaps, but you'll still be dead.

My suggestion:  **REPEAT** ad nauseum that our side is extremely peaceful and wouldn't hurt anyone.  We're certainly as peaceful as the members of the Religion of Peace that the Left loves so fuckin' much.  Ain't no sense in making a big deal out of guns and killin', since all that does is arouse strong opposition.

While in general I enjoy Clint's movies, this scene contains one of the Hollywood traits that drives me apoplectic.

Just what kind of weapon is Clint threatening the sheriff with, that is a hazard even before Clint has levered it and cocked back the hammers? I want one of those guns that I can point at other gun savvy people and make them a-scared even though it doesn't have a bullet in the chamber and the hammer is down. And when Clint cycled the bolt, why the hell didn't either a spent cartridge eject or a live cartridge eject?

I have gone over the moon watching TV shows where some dude jacks his weapon two or even three times or more to intimidate someone and never once fire it or eject a round from it. To anyone who knows boo about weapons that would clearly mean you are being threatened by some tool with an empty gun. Why wouldn't you just smack them and take the gun away?!?

I could not possibly disagree more. I have hurt people in the past in defense of me and mine. I have no shame about doing it, no qualms about doing it again, and I want others to know that, lest they think I'm an easy target.

If you think putting on some "I'm harmless" act will keep the progs off your back you're dreaming. If anything it only encourages them to try for the next step, and then the next. They suck the dicks of the Jihadis not because they like them, but because they fear them. Right now they don't fear conservatives.

Then when he tried to shoot Little Bill with the other barrel it misfired, and hilarity ensued.

Oh I agree there, but that wasn't my meaning. Clint is waving it around and pointing and threatening with it. As if he could shoot any some-bitch with just a trigger pull,,,, and then it turns out, it isn't locked nor loaded.

Seems rather amateur for a hardened killer dontcha think. Myself, I prefer my cocked hammer sitting over a live round when I go to pointing a weapon at critters and cretons. Perhaps it's just me though.

There is no trope or cliche in cinema more absolute than the necessity for the gunman to cock the pistol or rifle before firing. The metallic click-clack is just too definitive a cinematic trick to pass up. I imagine the cliche will pass into obscurity as striker-fired pistols and automatic rifles replace the old cowboy guns. You see the same cliche played out in old sword-n-sandal epics too, except that it has a sword being slowly drawn from a scabbard: shhhhhink! If you didn't already have your sword in hand before rushing into the fracas, you're an idiot. Ditto the bowman who doesn't have an arrow nocked and drawn.

I don't have the full scene in front of me, but I rmember part of what you describe. Thing is, the weapon in this scene isn't a double barreled shotgun. They are breach loaded and would have to broken open to chamber new rounds. It is a lever action rifle/carbine. Clint must have aquired it during his dance with the devil. One of the good souls there lending it to him for a moment.

Either way, it wasn't ready to fire. And that is the point.

Who here has ever been in a firefight? (Raising own hand) Were you inclined to go around pointing your weapon with an empty chamber and the hammer forward on a single action?

I bet not. Especially not as you are still here.

64 This character's nothing like the High Plains Drifter character. Oh, different characters, no doubt. But the characters themselves serve the same purpose in the movie. As in most of Eastwood's Westerns, when you think about it. Josey Wales is probably the closest analogue to William Munny, character-wise -- perhaps Munny is simply the same Josey Wales, 20 years further along. (I've always wanted to read Gone To Texas, the book The Outlaw Josey Wales was based on, but I've never gotten around to it.)

Like I said, it just one of those things that bugs me. Sort of like when they show a motorcycle that has a particular engine sound, but they've dubbed over it with a totally wrong sound. So you get a big twin that sound's like a Honda inline four. Or a two stroke that sounds like a Harley.   Just a comment on film making in general, not on the plot or the over riding character theme.

There was a book that came out a long time ago about this old guy in a movie studio in Rome who did all the sound effects for the Spaghetti Westerns, monster movies, and sword-n-sandal flicks that came out around then. And I mean all the sound effects: opening doors, clinking glasses, galloping horses, gunfire, everything. And it was just this one old dude alone in his studio, no high tech stuff, just a bunch of junk to make noise and a microphone to capture it. It was actually a really interesting book -- I wish I could remember what the title of it was...

First let me say I share your dislike of the ignorant depiction of guns in most movies. In fact I believe a lot of Hollywood types are deliberately, willfully, and militantly ignorant of firearms as part of thier proggie cred.

Buuuut...in the climactic scene of Unforgiven, Munny enters the saloon carrying a double barrel "coach gun". It progresses as I described earlier, and after the misfire Munny throws the now useless shotgun at Little Bill, then draws his revolver and proceeds to shoot Bill and several deputies.

After the gunfight is over, he picks up a Henry rifle that belonged to his friend (the Morgan Freeman character) and loads it, before shooting Bill in the face and then going back out into the street. In this particular movie they actually got things pretty much right.

70 I really don't mind the inaccuracies that Hollywood gets with guns, or even any military equipment.  What bothers me is their absolute disdain for the truth in history or anything that might be considered mildly political.

So when Bill says he does not "deserve this", he is speaking about everything. From his point of view, after everything he had done, he did not deserve to die like a dog. Munny on the other hand a cold blooded killer, reminded him that it has nothing to do with whether you deserve it or not, when it's time to go, it's time to go.
