— DrewM Right now the press conference is going on with a bunch of vets saying nice things about him.
Last night I set the over/under line for 'swift boat' references at 3 and took the over.
He says he got no special help to get into reserves, he volunteered by getting the Marine Reserves' number out of the phone book and didn't get any special treatment.
Says his claims of serving in Vietnam were 'a few misplaced words'. Really dude? That's the story you're going to stick too? Good luck with that.
How do you accidentally 'misspeak' when talking about whether or not you were in Vietnam? Give me a break.
He's doubling down and saying he's the true protector and advocate for vets.
He didn't quit when Charlie attacked, er, the Toys for Tots campaign* was slow, he ain't going to quit now.
Reporters not really buying someone could just call up and join the reserves back then.
Says it was "a few misplaced words. In instead of during". Oh BULLSHIT.
Says he was unaware he made those mistaken words. The chutzpah is beyond belief.
Says he will not apologize.
Why the MFM sucks...all someone had to ask him is "how does one 'misspeak' about whether or not they served in a war?" Did anyone? No. Why? He's a DEMOCRAT.
Your compare and contrast assignment for the day...a Republican Congressman cheats on his wife and resigns. A Democratic AG, running for the Senate, lies about military service and stays in office and race.
See, the Democrats can't be guilty of hypocrisy (the worst crime EVER) because they have no standards to betray.
*The NY Times story said he ran the Toys for Tots program while in the Marine Reserves in DC. I'm not snarking on that great program.
Original Post:
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee says they are sticking with Blumenthal but what else is there to say?
The guy did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve back in the day, so I don't want to take that away from him. Of course, the Democrats spent 8+ years telling us that George W. Bush's time as a fighter pilot didn't count. Maybe that's because unlike Blumenthal, Bush didn't try and get deferments first. Or because Bush is evil and Blumenthal is a Democrat. It makes all the difference.
Last night when the story broke Dave in Texas said he didn't think the Democrats could successfully spin this. That won't stop a guy like Marc Ambinder of the The Atlantic is willing to give it the old college try for their liberal friends. (I changed this because I didn't quite convey what Dave thought or succeed with what I was trying to do with a joke).
The facts are not unambiguous. The best the Times has is statements where Blumenthal talked about "returning" or "getting back" from Vietnam, but there are plenty of instances where he acknowledges that he never served overseas. That said, he never seemed to correct the impression that he did serve overseas.
Actually, the facts are quite unambiguous....
Notice how someone in the bag harps on "returning" or "getting back" from Vietnam and ignores "since the days that I served in Vietnam"?
Now there's nothing wrong per se with being in the bag for your team. We here at the HQ don't pretend to be anything but conservatives. It would be nice if others were equally honest.
Hey, He's So In the Habit About Lying About This He Even Lies In the Press Conference Apologizing For His Lies [ace]: In this video, Blumenthal insists that he has "always" given greater praise to those "who did far more than I did -- men and women who never came back. Those who returned, only to be ignored by the government who sent them there."
You see the problem there? He's saying those who never came back did more than he did. And those who returned but were ignored did more than he did.
But what about those who, unlike Blumenthal, just went to Vietnam in the first place?
I think this is a habit. I think he has over the years tried to imply he went to Vietnam with sentences like this, without actually saying he went. And obviously on a lot of occasions he flat-out said lied and said he went to Vietnam, or "returned" from Vietnam.
This reminds me of Clinton's defense in Lewinskygate -- that he tried to mislead without actually lying... but actually did wind up directly lying multiple times. But he wanted credit for "merely" attempting to mislead -- his error was "merely" slipping up and actually, really lying when what he intended to do was lie by implication and omission and evasion.
That's Blumenthal's schtick here -- Yeah, sure, I sorta tried to mislead, but I didn't try to lie... and yeah I actually did lie, but keep in mind, most of the time I was merely trying to sneak a lie past you without actually committing to it in a way that could be fact-checked.
And because he's practiced at these misleading statements -- because he's now internalized them -- in discussing his lies about going to Vietnam he's still talking about those who didn't return having given more than he did.
Those who didn't return did give more than he did. Also, all of those who did return gave more than he did, because Blumenfield never went, and was on some kid of barracks duty in the jungles of Washington State (or whatever).
He's still kinda-sorta implying he went to Vietnam because he's been doing just that for forty years.
In between directly and unambiguously lying about going to Vietnam, of course.

Well yeah, I did say that, what I meant was of course they would try to spin it. I just didn't think it would be very effective. Ambinder et.al. can read us off a list of 3,000 things he's said that aren't ""We have learned something very important since the days that I served in Vietnam".

Field Marshal Blumenthal went out of his way to stress that "unlike my peers, I volunteered for service" [paraphrased] when probably half of the guys behind him were drafted. I wonder how they feel about that added slap?
And the dirty little secret there is that for many of draft age, volunteering (and trying to choose duty in Germany or Korea or in this pud's case, Toys For Tots) was a strategy to avoid Vietnam.
Posted by: Curmudgeon at May 18, 2010 10:45 AM (ujg0T)
One possibility here is Blumenthal may have been deployed to Vietnam, but it's just not in any of the public records. The CIA did send Marines into Vietnam and there is no public record of it.
Remember Kerry's Christmas in Cambodia story? He probably was in Cambodia. He just wasn't supposed to say shit about it.

I was a unit commander of 2 national guard units and one reserve unit during
Vietnam. At no time did anyone have to wait to get into the units and at no
time did anyone ever try to use influence to join the units.
Its true that there was a disrespect for National Guard and Reserve units during
Vietnam, calling us draft dodgers. I highly resented this label, I had 8 years
active duty and while not a combat veteran, I served and earned the World War two victory medal and was in the navy 4 years during Korea.
I heard Chris Matthews on MSNBC say once he joined the peace corps to
get out of being drafted during Vietnam, in my view congress made the exceptions and President Johnson did not call us, personally, I trained
to go on active duty and would have gone if called.

My dad served during Korea. He wasn't IN Korea and never to my knowledge claimed as much. He was always very specific that he served DURING Korea, and took offense because people forgot those "forgotten war" veterans. His service was denigrated by people glossing over korea as if it didn't happen.
Now Tricky Dick here would be honorable in making those same points: he is unhappy about the reception soldiers from his time of service were denigrated because of Vietnam atrocities (real and fabricated), and wants to claim some measure of honor for all those that served at that time. But what does he do?
He claims to be fucking Carlos Hathcock instead of taking pride in what he actually did do (which was not negligible).
Disgrace.

Did the MSM ever acknowledge the ridiculousness of California cities boycotting Arizona? California being the home of the homophobe - twice rejecting Gay Marriage? Did any cities announce a cut of ties with California after the second time Califronia voters rejected Gay Marriage aka bathed in their hombophobia (per the MSM)? I kid you not...I HAVE SEEN SOME SHIT!
I still wake myself up screaming and still hear the sounds of the babies screaming and explosions, the whores tricking you with a little "licky licky" so they can fry your ass. You never know when your numbers up.
What? Vietnam?
No.
Granada man, Granada.

Many times I would sneak into my big sis Brenda's room when she was away at softball practice. I made a beeline to her fashion doll collection, and liberated "Ken" from his pleather carrying case. Stealthily I returned to my room where I exchanged Ken's outfit for my G.I. Joe's combat fatigues. Every time I removed Ken doll's trousers, I felt the anticipation right before that hard, tight little plastic ass appeared in all its naked glory.
The image is seared in my brain.

33 You know the guy in the famous photo of the flag raising on Iwo Jima, the one with just his butt showing? That was me.
Actually, that guy was Cpl Harlon H. Block. His Mom saw Rosenthal's famous picture several days prior to being notified that he'd been killed in action on Iwo on March 1, 1945, and immediately recognized him, because she recognized his butt, apparently. For years the Army believed that Block was another Marine named Hanson, Mrs. Block insisted she knew her boy. James Bradley's book Flags of Our Fathers recounts the story well.
Cpl Block was 20 when he was killed.

So if he was never in 'Nam....why was he hiding his watch up his ass for five years?

He was timing himself when he led the Haaaavhad men's AND women's swim teams to victory. And how else was he supposed to hold it?
P.S. Speaking of Haaaaaavhad, I gotta get my resume worked over by Sublog. They need another Delaware man there.

How do you accidentally 'misspeak' when talking about whether or not you were in Vietnam?
Say, for example, he was tending bar on a yacht in the waters off Perth, Australia. He could honestly say that he served on a boat south of Vietnam. Did you ask if he was serving his country or G&Ts? Did you not hear him say of before Vietnam? Well, that's your problem. So unless you ever worked for AIG, he doesn't owe you an apology.

What Dale says is not untrue. But exactly why does he need to mention the word Vietnam at all? Isn't Marine veteran enough?

Blumenthal would have had more luck claiming he fought in Tuzla. It's worked for someone else before. Right, Hilary?

I'm a Vietnam vet like Tom Harkin, man. I was overseas in Japan, just like Tom. I still have nightmares about some of those bar girls. That counts. How about a break? I thought hard about giving tens of thousands to charity before I didn't.
Why are they picking on me?

Later, not wanting to be mobbed everywhere I went, along with needing the time to carry out my duties as the captain of seven different Hah-vahd teams (as well as representing the US in 12 separate Olympic games - but only because they begged me), I dropped the manuscript off with my friend, Albert, and asked him to publish it under his name. I was, quite obviously, the most modest person of super-genius status that this world has ever seen. In fact, I was the most modest and the greatest super-genius. It's been a true burden.
But, that is neither here nor there. The cold hard fact is that you are one of the luckiest people in history to be able to read my words. Consider yourself blessed by the Blumin' Dick.

Well, I heard from a guy who knows someone who was there personally that Ace was talking to a bunch of lib-dem prisoners and Stolen Honor guys and he offers them all a smoke-less cigarette and some Nicorette. And then, swear to God, he swings his Thompson down and blows them all away and leaves them laying there by the side of the road. Shit. Worse than something you'd have seen in Nam.

How dare this cock sucker steal the glory from me and my friends who served multiple tours in Laos and Vietnam. Many of my brother's in arms gave their all so this unrepentent asshole could stand before the American public and lie about his sacrifice.
A little sidebar Blum: I've personally shot men in engagements for less than stealing our valor. Consider yourself a very lucky prick.

He fled heroically? The concepts of fleeing and heroism don't usually go together.

I am 40ish. I KIDDINGLY tell friends I served in Vietnam (it references a story about a trip to a bar one night while on leave). A hot, taller than me asian chick asked me to dance. We danced a little and sat down to talk and drink. A guy comes up to us and starts shit about "what are you doing with my lady?" I said, I didn't know, blah blah blah, sorry., blah blah blah. He said something about how he "picked her up in 'Nam". The guy looked maybe 5 years older than me and the chick was about 6 feet tall, so I called him out on it. He threw me his military ID card insisting it was true. Another problem with his lie was that his ID card showed that his DOB was in 1964. That pissed me right the fuck off, so no more Mr. Cowardly Soft Spoken Nice Guy Tolerating An Egomaniac Dumbass. I called him an asshole for lying about it, I know people who were there, etc. He literally said "It's go time." So, right over my shoulder into a heaving spazm of crying she-man "oh god it hurts" "i'm dying, call an ambulance" he went...
At any rate, it has been "go time" with these lying assholes for several elections now. I wish the GOP & anyone out there with political/media clout would finally take of the gloves, throw those fuckers into the bar and walk out of any fight leaving everybody stupefied.
Dead give away: Progressive Liberal Politicians that are Anti Military "Veterans". They are either lying about said service or signed up knowing they could use their "service" on their resume and get carte blanche for any and all anti military statements made in their political career (see Murtha & Kerry).
