Dick Morris: The Democrats' Doomsday Dilemma
— Ace

You know when there's a guy on second and there's a hit and so the outfielder throws the ball to second, to keep the man on first from advancing, and concedes the run?

The Democrat Party has to decide whether to throw to home to stop a run that there's no way to stop or throw to second, make the safe play, that at least keeps a runner out of scoring position.

With Republican prospects looking ever better for this fall, the House Democratic Campaign Committee and the PACs that follow its lead face tough triage decisions: Who will they fund?

Republicans need 39 seats to take away the Democrats' majority, so the temptation is to focus on protecting the weakest seats. But protecting a House majority is becoming more unrealistic -- so what should the party do? Will it mount a goal-line stand and pour funds into its weakest 39 races -- or tacitly concede the House, back up and defend the seats it can win?

By moving resources out of the races where they're weakest, Democrats would be swallowing a bitter pill by admitting that Nancy Pelosi's days as House speaker are numbered. But if they focus their funds and manpower on the most endangered seats, they may well let slip away dozens more seats that they might have defended successfully.

Futile efforts to protect a disappearing majority could lead to a loss of 60 to 80 seats, where a more prudent allocation of resources might hold the damage to 50 seats.

Condemning those dozens of "extra" Democrats to defeat would deny the Democrats the incumbents on whom they'd need to build a future majority -- opening the door to a longterm GOP majority.

Prediction: They throw home. Because they're stupid and led by a mental patient.

The run scores, the man flies to second and rounds to steal third, there's an error at third and the ball goes into the foul line gutter and rolls out to the outfield, and that run comes home, too.

The Spending... Is broken down by Patrick Ishmael, who writes:

The NRCC is intent on locking down the most accessible seats first, and then depending on the popular wave to take them over the 39 seat threshold. The DCCC anticipates that this will be a wave election but is intent on making the 39th, majority-losing seat the most difficult one to take by creating a last-gasp, ten seat firewall. Why the NRCC would anticipate a wave and spend a lot of money on seats most susceptible to a wave instead of the wave outliers, or why the DCCC would start its firewall so late in the vulnerability list, are a bit beyond me.

He concludes the NRCC is not being aggressive, as it's focused on the easiest 30 seats, whereas a confident and aggressive party would target the next 30 seats. (I'm making up the 30/30 thing as far as specific numbers but that's what he says, basically.)

I long ago decided that when I start pimping races, I'm not going to focus on the top 30 but the next 30. Everyone will be donating to and hyping the top 30. I want to lock in on 31-60.

I don't know how to go about doing that. At some point I guess I'll ask the RNCC for a list.

41 Ricky Henderson don't need to be on second to score.  Ricky can score from first just fine.  In fact, if Ricky was on second, Ricky would have already stolen third.  We all know that Ricky Henderson is gonna score.  Especially when Ricky is on third, already. Ricky Henderson scores.  So, the Republicans need to listen to Ricky Henderson's advice and be more like Ricky Henderson.

42 Obama is the number one draft pick by the Tigers when Randy Smith was running them. Obama had one pitch that could get the lower level hitters out, but couldn't rely on that one pitch when he got to the bigs.

They had some bullpen sessions to work on a second and third pitch and realized his stuff was so bad, he couldn't do it. So, because they had so much money wrapped up in the number one pick, they had to keep rolling him out every fifth day, hoping the defense behind him would keep making the plays and getting him out of jams he made for himself; he couldn't find the strike zone some days; other starts his stuff was so bad he got rocked and set in for an early shower.

Finally, the other players went to the GM and asked them to send him back down for more seasoning; anything to give their team a chance to win games. But because they couldn't give him his outright release (due to the fact the team was out of moves). So, he has been moved to the bullpen for long relief when the team is getting shelled.

You redneck bitter clinger wingers. You can't use a baseball analogy for the elite socialist nuanced party. You must use a game like Jai Alai, some faggy french sport, or perhaps tennis; mixed doubles.

Here's a great analogy. It's first and 10 on the 10 yard line. The dems are defense, the rethuglicans are offence. The entire dem line is composed of clones of barny frank and nancy pelosi. The entire offence is composed of Chris Christi. Hut.

More likely though is that the republicans have the ball and fumble it, recover it, fumble it, lose yardage, advance, fumble it again then somehow barely manage to fall over the endzone with multiple flags down.

On the other hand, if the GOP wins even a one-seat majority in the House (and I'm purposely staying in Winston Wolf mode here), from election night onward anything higher than 5% unemployment and anything less than 25% GDP growth will be blamed solely on the Republicans.

You won't hear any talk about giving them time, and suddenly Barack Obama will be seen as completely powerless.

Focus on the PA-4 race

Our district is like R+4 or more and we have had a Dem, Jason Altmire for 3 terms. Twice because we ran the same candidate who he beat the first time around and last time because of the Obama wave.

We have an upstart, Rothfus who beat a very well know DA Mary Beth Buchannon for the Republican primary.

Rothfus does have a decent chance to beath Altmire and the republicans should throw some money around here to get this Republican leaning district back into republican hands.

I think a safe bet is the Republicans picking up between 20-35 seats.

It all depends on the next few months. If unemployment is higher than 9.5% or stays stagnant or if inflation or deflation starts to increase then i think we are looking at 35+.

However, world events can change things.

If Israel or America attack Iran before the election, it could help or hurt Obama depending on what happens and our response.

186 Biden too.

Biden has been moved to an undisclosed location until the Summer of Recovery is over.

He wasn't moved. He got lost again. Between first and second base.

You left out the part of her spitting out the tobacco chaw and scratching her nutsack.

192 Prediction: They throw home. Because they're stupid and led by a mental patient.
Most libs would eat the ball and then ban baseball everywhere, arguing that kids might eat the balls and become obese, which would drive up the cost to the government (since the government took over our health care).
Well ... they'd put a hefty tax on baseballs and then ban the game after a year or two. They'd explain that baseball is un-Amerikan.

193 The Donks will "throw home" but the runner will trip over 2nd base, break an ankle and still insist on crawling on bloodied knees toward 3rd. Can you tell I have lost the will to really and truly back Republicans?

194 Steele will signal the base runner to hold at third.  Obama will have the umpire rule that the game is called on account of rain.

196 In answer to Ace's final question, you could rank vulnerable House Democrats two different ways: By their own 2008 percentage margin, or by Obama's percentage in that district. Or you could borrow Patrick Ishmael's top 100 list from last month. Or take the table in the post of his that you linked, and push the seats that the NRCC is ignoring but the DCCC thinks are worth defending.

As long as that anti-American, totalitarian, mobbed-up scrunt Pelosi goes back to being nothing more than "that stretched-out mutant representing the communist satrapy of San Francisco", I'm five-by-five.

Too bad it can't happen during this painfully awful season of Top Chef so that each of the moonbat freaks they've rustled up from the D.C. sewer can work on making an amuse bouche out of their own tears.

I actually would go even further then skipping the first 30. If the Repubs can't win by atleast 15 seats I prefer they lose by 5 anyway and not give Obama a foil.

Second, because if the genric polls are to be believed, then I can see the Repubs winning as many as 100 seats. Thats right I said it, 100 seats. First, the registered voter polls are at +6 for the Repubs. Add 2-3 for "likely voter" additions. Another couple for historical out performing for Repubs. And another couple for heat and intensity this cycle, and I "EXPECT"  a 10-13 point generic victory. It could be even higher then that. The Dems had a 40 seat advantage with a generic 8.9 point victory last congessional election. Shouldn't a 11-12 point generic victory for Repubs correlate to possibly a 60 seat advantage. Not to mention the gerrymandering disadvantage democrats have. In other words too many slam dunk districts in minority areas and most other seats being vulnerable.

Finally is the past elections a year ago. The Massachusets, Virginia and New Jersey races were a +20 +26 +31 for Repubs compared to what Obama got in 2008. And those elections occurred when Obama was at 51-44 and 49-46 in approval. Now he is 45-50. Any seat with a decent Repub canidate where Obama won by less then 30 points should be strongly contested. And thats a large majority of Dem held seats. Not just 60 measely seats.

I skip the easeist 45 all together and expect victory there. I put a little  money on the next 20 and put the majority in the next 30. You don't need to win Alan Grayson's seat by 20 points. You just need to beat him and you will. You don't need to send money there at all. Focus on the Ron Kleins, Ron Kind's, and Mellisa Bean's of the world. They could easily lose if you send money against them and if they have tough competion. And these seats are considered "Likely Democratic". Bull crap! Go big I say.

203 199 rockmom is one of my favorite commenters at HA, and her take on FL-2 with Allen Boyd sent chills down my spine. I don't know what Pelosi told the Blue Dogs to get them to slit their throats, but their votes on Obamacare ended their political careers. Maybe they will get lobbyist jobs, but looking at that list, these Democrats are screwed.

212 If one looks at the Waxman remarks, the Grijalva nonsense, etc. one senses that the progressives are trying to cut off the throw and stick the ball in their pocket. You're gonna see money taken away from trying to save seats for 'blue dog'/ 'centrist'/ 'pro-life' Democrats in favor of guaranteeing reelection for those who pimp the Real Democrat Agenda.

For starters we need to sweep out all of the DIRT (DemocRATS in Red Territory). None of these people should remain, whether they voted against Obamacare or not. Show them all the door. Bright, Matheson, Boren, Edwards....ALL OF THEM. There is no D worth voting for if you believe in liberty, free-markets, the Rule of Law, etc. NOT ONE!!!

He and Joe Walsh had a humorous exchange about copyright laws. There is a lot to be said for name recognition, though; look at Alvin Greene.
