Don't Panic

Just remember: when things seem to be spinning completely out of control, the important thing is...don't panic. And make sure you have your towel.

15 From Wiki: Vogons are slug-like but vaguely humanoid, are bulkier than humans and have green skin, although the movie has them have greyish white skin . Vogons are described as mindlessly bureaucratic, aggressive, having "as much sex appeal as a road accident" and the writers of "the third worst poetry in the universe". They are employed as the galactic government's bureaucrats. ACORN!!!

16 It's really a pity that the movie version sucked so hard. The worst thing was that they got Marvin completely wrong (though I think Alan Rickman had the perfect voice for him). But then, Adams' dry British humor didn't really translate well to the screen -- you have to read it on the page. Stuff like this: "He had found a Nutri-Matic machine which had provided him with a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea."

51 "A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."  D. 74 In case of Sonic Attack on your district, follow these rules.....

If you are making love it is imperative to bring all bodies to orgasm simultaneously Do not waste time blocking your ears. Do not waste time seeking a soundproof shelter. Try to get as far away from the sonic source as possible, but do not panic.....

Use your wheels. It is what they are for. Small babies may be placed inside the special cocoons, which should be left if possible, in a shelter. Do not attempt to use your own limbs. If no wheels are available, metal, not organic, limbs should be employed whenever possible.....

Remember, in the case of Sonic Attack, Survival means every man for himself. Statistically more people survive if they think only of themselves. Do not attempt to rescue friends, relatives, loved ones. You have only a few seconds to escape. Use those seconds sensibly or you will inevitably die.

Do not panic. Think only of yourself....

30 not good for the Dems

A strange article. While everything in it is unfavorable to the Dems, it has this under a photo caption:

While most rated Republicans as better able to handle the biggest threats to the future of the USA, voters overwhelmingly favored Democrats to handle the top issues, according to surveys of voters as they left polling places.

Now the photo is just of the Capitol dome, and this caption raises more questions than it answers, while being inconsitent with the text. They don't say what they're claiming the "biggest threats" even are, or what the "top issues" are. There's just a blanket claim that the Dems are favored on these "top issues", without backing it up with anything.  Classic liberal media bias.

Is there still somebody in the US who's clueless enough to think a bunch of socialists are the people to have run your economy? That's like hiring a convicted pediphile to run your kid's kindergarten. Oh, right ... but they're not socialists, and you're just a racist! (LOL)

96 Would that be the shelf in the music room or reading room at Versailles? I prefer to store my literary works (and their audio derivatives) in the downstairs Library, not far from the Gold Room. The East Wing Library is reserved for the rarer and more delicate works: my hand-illuminated copy of the Magna Carta, an early manuscript of the Luther Bible, and my 5-year run of Juggs magazine. My manservant, Nigel, is a magnificent curator of my various bits of ephemera, and directed my attention to this delightful little bit of science-fictional whimsey some years back.

98 I read Hitchiker's Guide in a collected edition after watching the movie.  Before that, it was just a familiar title, nothing more.  Pretty good story.  I was a little let down by the end, but I don't remember why anymore.  Honestly, I thought the movie was good on its own and it opened a door a very entertaining series.  In some ways I like the movie more and in others, the book.
The radio series has yet to make it into my realm of consciousness, but I do really want to give it a listen when I find the time.  Maybe on a car trip.

In the end, it's not my most favorite series, but it is definitely enjoyable.

100 My 12YO daughter recently warmed the hackles of my heart when she asked about HHGTTG and wanted the books.  A few clicks on Amazon and a hardcover version of the trilogy in five books is now hers.

If your kid wants a copy of a classic, just buy it.  Her previous request was for Greek myths, so she's now got a hardcover copy of Bulfinch's Mythology.

102 If I ever write a book on space, I'm calling it Guide to the Galaxy for People With Their Own Vehicle.

103 Read the first book and liked it okay.  Continued on to Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and got about a chapter in before I realized I suddenly hated all the characters and gave up on it.

The "Red Dwarf" novels are much funnier anyway.

104 I'd like to find a nice little planet in an out of the way corner of the universe where I could get a job as the Sandwich Maker for a small village.
