— Ace If you didn't know -- Doug Hoffman, the guy we all wanted to displace Dede Scozzafinnochio or whatever -- attempted to run (this time in a genuine primary) for the Republican nomination, and lost a narrow election against the ultimate nominee, Matt Doheney.
But then Hoffman refused to exit the race -- remaining on the Conservative Party ballot line, splitting the conservative vote and throwing the race to the Democrat. Again. (I don't mean he's to blame again, but it would be a second time for the Democrat winning the seat due to a split conservative/Republican vote.)
Well he's finally decided to drop out.
“It was never my intention to split the Republican vote in the 23rd District. So today, I withdraw as a candidate from this race. Under New York State Election Law my name cannot be removed from the Conservative Party line on the ballot. However, I strongly urge and request that my supporters not vote for me and certainly not vote for the Democrat or Working Families Party candidate.“Matt Doheny and I may have differed on some issues during the course of our primary race. Now, we must put those differences aside and do what is best for our nation. So today, I am asking all my supporters to cast their vote for Matt Doheny on Election Day, November 2nd.
Good on ya, Hoffie.

Yeah, I mean he can still be voted for, and as I understand (and I hope I'm wrong) it votes for him won't go to the Republican. So its a bit too little too late.

Funny how a conservative will drop out, yet a RINO will be a sore loser and do whatever they can to kneecap the primary winner.

Help me out here, morons.
I keep seeing ads for Jerry Brown here, saying he will lead us to the socialist Promised Land just as he did before, and claiming that Meg Whitman opposes "clean energy jobs." (Nothing about her stance on unicorns, Bigfoot, or any other mythical creature; just "clean energy jobs.")
Does clicking on the ad run up costs for the Reds? If so, I'm going to click like crazy.

There's a full month before the election. Considering most voters are only now getting serious about their votes, it's an eternity. Plus, there's no ambiguity in Hoffman's statement of shifting support to his Rightish-leaning opponent. Hoffman is doing the right thing under personally difficult circumstances. I'm not going to stomp on his political grave because a) I don't think this kills him and b) he's acting appropriately even if he believes that his competition is inadequately conservative, especially for a wave election.

My understanding is that in order for the Conservative party to be able to stay on the ballot for FUTURE races in New York, this sort of had to happen. I think Hoffman may have a shot in future races, or in the Tea Party/Republican party going forward.
I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one - he's never struck me as a sore loser. Let's not forget that he - unlike many others - was willing to put himself out there when this whole movement was starting. If not for him, we might not be where we are today.

In case you haven't noticed, there are plenty of voters who have been serious about their votes for quite some time.
I never said this was the end of Hoffman, nor am I interesting in destroying his political career.
I agree at THIS time he's doing the right thing. But at least as recently as LAST WEEK, the guy was still on the ticket splitting the vote.
How difficult would it have been for this guy to make the same speech a year ago?

"Castle bowed out because his involvement would have helped O'Donnell. Hoffman bowed out because is involvement would have helped the Democrat."
I, too, think Hoffman never should have stayed on the Conservative ticket: he was beat fair and square in the Republican primary. He got his fair shot (unlike in the special election, which was the main reason he was so supported), and the voters in NY-23 chose someone else. He should have known that he would be splitting "the Republican Vote" and so should have endorsed his opponent immediately.
However, he didn't. Now he _has_ dropped out of the race, and given a ringing endorsement of the Republican (or, at least, a resounding call for unity). So, he gets his kudos. As I recall, Castle, too, at least received "credit where it's due" mentions for his dropping out of the race.

Well, you raise a good point, though I think its been pretty obvious for a long time that his presence on the ballot would act as a "spoiler".
This raises the question of why NOW. . .when just last week he confirmed he was still running. Something/someone must have just gotten to him.

And that group, while larger than typical but probably barely a majority, will take all of ten seconds to cement their choice now that Hoffman has dropped out. Hoffman supporters aren't going to D or WFP and neither will D/WFP votes swing to Doheny. So that leaves the usually disinterested a month to make their choice - again, an eternity in political time. Hoffman didn't need to concede anything a year ago. And now he does and now he did.
Also, note Teresa in Fort Worth, TX@36. Hoffman is not subverting the process by what you say is inordinate delay. Hoffman has been a stand-up guy. He's now justifiably standing down.
Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at October 05, 2010 10:20 AM (swuwV)
#52 - I'm not exactly sure about the technicalities of the New York party/voting system; however, I do seem to remember reading something about how a 3rd party (in this case, the Conservative party) has to meet certain requirements in order to be able to field a candidate in the NEXT election.
I don't know if that has anything to do with how long Mr. Hoffman stayed in the race or not. I do know that there were a couple of writers on other blogs (can't remember off the top of my head who they are) who mentioned that Mr. Hoffman's case is kind of a special one. Those same writers had expected him to drop out before the general election, though.
And he's not a sore-loser incumbent. You still don't like to see a 3-way vote, because of how the numbers fall out, but it's a slightly different situation. If he's not running any ads, people who haven't tuned into the political process until now (i.e. the vast MAJORITY of voters) probably aren't going to vote for him anyhow.
In any case, it isn't worth worrying about at this point - if the (D) wins, then we can rake Hoffman over the coals. Otherwise, there are other races which need our attention.

The National Football League has asked the Russ Feingold campaign to take down a newly released ad that uses footage from NFL games.
The Feingold campaign reacted quickly. “We are making an edit to the ad to accommodate the NFL’s concerns," campaign spokesman John Kraus told the Journal Sentinel.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league did not license the footage used in the ad. He said the league had contacted the Feingold campaign about removing it.
The ad features various scenes of football players celebrating in the end zone. One clip shows the infamous 2005 "mooning" incident featuring Randy Moss, then with the Minnesota Vikings, in a game at Lambeau Field.
Here's what Feingold says in the ad: "In pro football, they call this excessive celebration. And they punish it with fines and 15-yard penalties. It's exactly the kind of behavior that corporate special interests and Ron Johnson are engaging in.
"They're dancing in the end zone because they think they're going to take down the U.S. senator who has been named the No. 1 enemy of Washington lobbyists. Fortunately, the game isn't over yet."
Feingold ends the ad by saying Wisconsin deserves an independent voice.
The reference to Feingold's No. 1 ranking is a survey taken by Washingtonian magazine.

I think you should do a lot of reading and research and draw your own conclusions. No one, not even a broker or financial planner would be willing to make that kind of decision for you.
you are on your own.

Rhino whacking? Ok - that's kinky, even for this place. Really out to put a "don't try this at home" disclaimer on that one.
Thank you for playing.

Roger is a liberal asshat. What he did to Rush's bid to partner in the Rams organization was an embarrassment to sport. I think he's only doing this because of the 'expressed written consent of the NFL' clause. If Feingold would've contacted the NFL first, I'm sure they would've let him use the content without a problem.

oh, and has Castle endorsed O'Donnell yet?
Castle will endorse O'Donnell about the same time that Don Lowery, who ran radio ads claiming Mark Kirk supported child molestation, endorses Kirk.
It goes both ways.
Another sore loser: Bill McCollum refuses to endorse Rick Scott. We in FL need a GOP governor for redistricting purposes, as we are getting 2 additional Congresscritter seats.
McCollum is an asshole. So glad I didn't vote for him.

I have to say that Art Bell was a marketing genius. He made a lot of money exposing the loser kook fringe. I work nights so sometimes I listen to Coast to Coast for shits and giggles. Although, I have to admit, I can only listen in small increments sometimes. There are some whacked out people out there. One of the things I've noticed more and more is that most of these people probably voted for Dear Leader (if they voted at all). Scary.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell failed to offer support of Rush Limbaugh’s bid to buy the Rams on Tuesday and said the talk-show host’s ‘divisive comments’ would not be welcome in the league.
‘I’ve said many times before, we’re all held to a high standard here,’ Goodell told reporters, via the New York Times.
‘I would not want to see those comments coming from people who are in a responsible position in the NFL –- absolutely not.’
No effect? Really? The commissioner of the league comes out and says your money isn't welcome here and I think that has some effect on whether you own a team in said league.

I used to listen to Art Bell when he was only broadcasting from Vegas on KDawn or KDWN or whatever it was and he was mostly sponsored by a csino. It was more or less a pretty Conservative political show. Then he gradually changed and went off into space.

I agree. But my statement about what Goodell did being douchebaggery of the hightest order is 100% correct. What he did was wrong. He didn't have to say anything because it wasn't going to happen. But he did. That makes him a ranking member of the asshat society.
