Dozens Sign Up To Be Write-In Candidate In Alaska Senate Race
— DrewM

Yesterday the Alaska Supreme Court rewrote the state's election rules to help Princess MerCOKEski. In response conservatives called on people to sign-up to be a write-in candidate in order to mess with the MerCOKEski plan.

Over a hundred Alaskans heeded the call.

In a movement one pro-Sarah Palin website is calling “Operation Alaska Chaos,” at least 100 people filed paperwork Thursday to register as write-in candidates in the U.S. Senate election, according to the Division of Elections.

A stream of would-be senators filtered through the elections office in Midtown Anchorage late in the day, many saying the effort is meant to protest an order by the Alaska Supreme Court on Wednesday allowing a list of write-in candidates to be shown to voters who ask for assistance.

The court action is expected to aid Sen.(MerCOKEski's) write-in bid and amounts to electioneering by the state, say supporters of Republican nominee Joe Miller. The idea of a mass registration is to create a long list of potential write-in choices and make it harder for voters to find (MerCOKEski's) name.

...A list of candidates on the Division of Elections website included more than 40 write-in names late Thursday, but employees at the Anchorage office said other names were still being processed.

Among the write-in candidates listed on the division website Thursday was a “Tom M.,” but no “Lisas.”

Richard Koller of Anchorage imagined (MerCOKEski's) name awash in “a sea of other names” at Alaska polling places as a result of the mass registration.

Well played Alaska conservatives. Well played.

BTW- I haven't seen one of the new 'voter aide' sheets the Alaska Supreme Court is suddenly allowing voters to see (apparently this has never happened before when there were write -in candidates) so I may be spelling Sen. MerCOKEski's name incorrectly. If so, I apologize for the error.

8 As a conservative, this deeply offends my sense of fair play. Senator Murkowski participated in a hard-fought primary to earn her right to compete as a write-in candidate. These new "candidates" engaged in no such effort. Although legal, it appears highly unethical to disrupt the democratic process in this manner. I shall "write off" the election next week.

24 We hold that the words "write-in" do not dictate the place or form in which such candidates names be displayed at the polling place. The only restriction appears to be that the names be formed by written English characters. Accordingly, Ms. Murkowski's motion to compel her name appear in print on the same ballot as Mr. Miller's is granted, as is her application to require that those casting a vote for Miller first guess at the secret PIN code to access the ballot.

42 We further rule that it would be discriminatory to discount a vote on the basis of fitting a long, cumbersome name into the small ballot space. Therefore, at the time of our ruling, there is only one long name in the running, and any marks in the write-in space shall be deemed a vote for the only candidate with the long name when we make this ruling. All other long names registered as candidates afterward shall be past deadline. We are a servicable group of toadies, and we get robes to boot.

61 This is bad: http://tinyurl.com/2bwryl7 In Alaska Senate Race, Off the Ballot but on the Rise [Miller's] lead has narrowed after a string of setbacks since his surprising primary victory. News reports in Alaska have raised questions about everything from farm subsidies, unemployment and government health care benefits and even a low-income fishing license that Mr. Miller or his family members have received. Critics say the reports have undermined his credibility when he argues against the federal health care bill and unemployment benefits or vows to eliminate the Department of Education and eventually privatize Social Security. Over the weekend, after Mr. Miller refused for weeks to answer questions about disciplinary action taken against him when he worked as a lawyer for Fairbanks North Star Borough, a judge ordered records of the incident released as soon as Tuesday. (The ruling also came after Mr. MillerÂ’s security guards handcuffed Tony Hopfinger, the editor of Alaska Dispatch, an online news site, when he tried to ask Mr. Miller about the matter at a campaign event.) Mr. Miller may still fight the judgeÂ’s order, though in a debate in Anchorage on Sunday, he admitted to being suspended from work for an ethics violation in 2008 for using government computers for political purposes. He left the job in the summer of 2009. Questions about transparency have followed the candidate. In addition to his reluctance to discuss the ethics violation, he has also brushed off the handcuffing of the journalist, saying he played no role in the incident. Mr. Miller lives down a series of long gravel roads at the edge of Fairbanks. Security cameras are positioned to monitor the entrance to his house, which sits out of sight.

80 The whole concept of a write-in ballot is flawed. It is prejudicial by nature - Joe Miller, Susan Smith, or anyone with a common - could not mount a write-in campaign because an established party could find someone with the same or similar name at the last minute invalidating or splitting your vote. Leeza is actually benefiting from her hard to spell name; Lisa Miller would not be afforded the same opportunity.

So Kerry thinks Rush and Beck are Buddhists?  Shows how much he knows.

It's a reference to the movie Dodgeball, where the "good guys" team was from Average Joe's Gym.

To clarify. You have to put your correct name on the write in ballot but there is an option for nickname. If your nickname was lisa murkowski it would show on the ballot as:

Joe "lisa murkowski" Smith. It's going to be a fun day for lawyers after the 2nd.

Leeza Moorscruntskee: Go ahead, make your jokes, Mr. Jokey... Joke-maker. But let me hit you with some knowledge. Quit now. Save yourself the embarrassment of losing with these losers on Tuesday, Miller.
Joe Miller: Alliteration aside, I'll take my chances in the election.
Leeza Moorscruntskee: Yeah, you will take your chances.
Joe Miller: I know. I just said that.
Leeza Moorscruntskee: I know you just said that.
Joe Miller: Okay, I'm not sure where you're going with this.
Leeza Moorscruntskee: Well, I'm not sure where you're going with this.
Joe Miller: That's what I said.
Leeza Moorscruntskee: That's what I'm saying to you.
Joe Miller: All right.
Leeza Moorscruntskee: ...Touchè!.

98 Alaskans aren't interested in the civil war in the Republican party between Murkowski and Miller. They'll vote for the Democrat, McAdams, in disgust.

99 No chance Greg. We see where this country is heading and adding a Dem to the mix will not happen. His base is too small, he will not get the crossover vote.

Posted by: Bosk at October 29, 2010 08:17 AM (pUO5u)

100 Maybe this has already been covered, but can't you write in anybody?

So if I lived in Alaska and I had a neighbor named Liza Murcolski, I could write her in, right?

102 Does anyone really think one can get 35% of any population to write in a name? How many times has that happened? Once every hundred years? I think the only time it has ever happened is with Strom Thurmond and he had a lot of highly motivated white racists writing him in. What does Murkooski have?

Posted by: Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz at October 29, 2010 08:25 AM (//Bcg)

103 There need to be more Lisas as write-ins.  "Her" name still sticks out like a sore thumb.

104 Among the write-in candidates listed on the division website Thursday was a “Tom M.,” but no “Lisas.”

Wow, all those hat tips to LauraW finally paid off!

Posted by: Tom M at October 29, 2010 08:26 AM (i0rVe)

105 Let me try to channel a Lisa M. supporter.

But write-in candidates are wrong, unethical and should be illegal.
Being a write-in candidate to try to steal votes from a real candidate is wrong.
Maybe all these write in candidates should be prosecuted for fraud or something...
If you're not a "real" candidate you shouldn't be allowed on the ballot or list or whatever...

/end psychosis

Man, that's tough; like trying to hold both sides of Orwellian Doublespeak in your head at one time.  I'm glad I'm not a liberal... just imagine they have to hold that sort of thing in their head as their beliefs ALL THE TIME.

Which does explain why their ideas are so trite and their plans are so disappointing; if you had to use most of your mental abilities just to keep your brain from braking under the strain of believing contradictory idiocy you'd be slow as well.

Ha ha!  You should hear the talk radio up here today - people are flipping out.  Lisa's supporters are crying just like their fearless leader that it's not 'fair' and that everyone is trying to halt the voting process, when really they are doing the same thing she did.

111 - You are exactly correct in your assesment of the Lisa voters!

120 I followed the link  from the Anchorage Daily News to the official list and there are now about 150 write-in candidates! (and that is AFTER subtracting out the ones listed as denied for one reason or another)  No telling if they have finished processing all the applications yet.  Unfortunately none have names similar to Liza MooCowSki.

Posted by: Formerly known as Skeptic at October 29, 2010 09:21 AM (91XRk)

Posted by: DANEgerus at October 29, 2010 10:00 AM (e3/KR)

122 This is all very good but someone query me this:  Why is Ms. Nameless, as a write-in candidate, the ONLY one listed with personal information website listed?  The only others listed like that are candidates that actually WON their Party nomination in the Primary and on the ballot.  It makes Nameless stand out amongst all the other people who registered as write-ins.  The Election Office is still doing everything it can to help out.  There's got to be something ILLEGAL about this.  I wish someone would make sure it gets "handled".

Posted by: Sultry Beauty at October 29, 2010 10:29 AM (R+zEb)

123 Ideally, all the other write-ins would have names that start with "M" and end with "-ski". But maybe you have to register with your real name.

Posted by: Leeza Mcclueless at October 29, 2010 11:16 AM (UO76L)

125 @49 Nope, Alaska uses paper ballots, which are inked, and then scanned as they are pulled into the ballot-box. At least, the two polling sites I've ever used use that system. Could be different outside of Anchorage.

126

Couldn't you theoretically write ANY-DAMN-BODY'S name in as a write-in candidate?  If so, isn't a list of names to write in just an extension of the ballot really, for which there are specific rules to get your name on?

Sounds like a really stupid ruling.

127 I hope Doodad Pro was able to get his name on the ballot.

Posted by: Retired Geezer at October 29, 2010 12:22 PM (J5v7j)

128 I wager that the next trick for Leeza Mazerruski is to have the Alaska Supreme court demand that her name is in a font twice as large as the other write-ins.

And fuck you, Ace.
