Remember, the victim and his wife were on the Mexico side of the border- illegally, natch. And, since this is a lake, there's really no way to prevent American tourists out jet-skiing from accidentally (or even purposely, if innocently) crossing the border in that spot.  I guess you could constantly have the border in that area patrolled by boats, or just cordon off the lake, but that seems a little like over-kill...

You're still missing the point.  The murder occurred across the border.  They could, quite literally, have shot him in the head 5 feet from Border Patrol or any other American LEO, and said "neener-neener-neener."  We would have had no jurisdiction.

I said neither of these things. 

I said that this case cannot (without a great deal of shoehorning) really be used to talk about illegal immigration or border security- since the only violation of border security was that the tourists went into Mexico's territory.  If some tourist had gone to, say, Iraq, got captured and killed by jihadis, would you be talking about increased border security?

This is not a reflection on our poor border security- we have plenty of those stories, we don't need to shoehorn this one.  This is a reflection of the chaos that is inherent in any country where the Government is known to be weak and corrupt, and Mexico needs to do something about it. 

Or do you really think that in any circumstances our troops (Border Patrol, National Guard, or anyone) would be given permission to fire on gang-bangers who were across the border, and not assaulting those troops or attempting to cross the border themselves?

Others have probably already addressed this, but I'm going to just toss in my two cents.

I believe DrewM's point wasn't that a fence would have prevented this incident with the jet skier from occuring.  Rather, Drew is advocating the building of a border fence/wall to prevent or obstruct the spread of this kind of brutal cartel violence into the United States.  Otherwise what's to keep the cartels from sending their thugs across the border to start beheading American law enforcement officers, or terrorizing American citizens the way they already terrorize Mexicans?  What's to stop them from zooming across the water on their own jet skis to shakedown American citizens and visitors on the American side of the border? 

Recent administrations have proven that they're laxadaisical at best about enforcing our immigration laws and protecting our borders.  If we're not going to present a strong legal barrier against criminal encroachment from south of the border, then it's about time we put a big, solid, PHYSICAL barrier there instead.

Very true.  But it would be a heck of a lot easier if some of the enforcement along the land-based border could be relocated to fluid borders like those that cross bodies of water.  One way to allow for that reallocation of enforcement resources would be to take on some of their burden by building a wall.

121 From looking at the map Falcon Lake is a tributary river to the Rio Grande.  If it's called a lake I would take it there is a dam of some sort before it enters the Rio Grande.  Kind of hard to jump a dam on a jet ski, though I've seen it done in the movies.  Didn't Clancy's Ghost Recon game have a version where you are US troops in Mexico City?  As far as a fifth column goes, what about how Mexico is run is worth defending.  Yes I am a Latino, my family was in this country  before it was this country.  I see no easy answers...in the end there will only be .... you know!

My idea of a secure border is 300 yard wide buffer with an equally spaced run of 3 12 foot concertina fences.

In between the fences we have a mix of high and low density AP minefields.

falcon lake is actually a reservoir build back the 50's to ease flooding in Zapata county. It's jointly managed between the US and Mexico, and always has been. The area was hardly a no-man's land either. Fishing tourneys and the like were held there... until they all got cancelled this year.

And very few of us here in south TX believed anything but the window's story. The Zetas have robbed boaters on the Mexican side before. In fact, there was a story about them attempting to EXPOLDERIZE Falcon Dam for one reason or another. Um, yeah.

130 Falcon is one of the two international reservoirs on the Rio Grande. The other one, Lake Amistad, is even larger. That Lake Amistad part of the TX-MX border hasn't had as much crime as most other sections have been having--yet.
