With the Smithsonian subversives in the news, I bring you an oldie-but-goodie from Duchamp, who makes the modern mischief-makers look like bedwetting pantspoopers.

For generations, many tried to figure out why the lady in da Vinci's Mona Lisa has that unforgettable smile.

Marcel gave us a very moronesque answer to open tonight's thread:

Subversion done with a wink and a nod is timeless.

Subversion done with dung and disgust is a dust trap.

24 Look up XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX to see other work by the author of the piece "Red." This guy has it going on. Early stuff is nicely leaning Egon Schiele but then the later stuff goes Philip Pearlstein-ish. Art, it's a crazy world.

26 I have an amusing anecdote that I may have told before, but whatever. Friend of a friend saw that an artwork competition was being held, and decided to enter, treating the whole thing as a joke because postmodern art was in the air and he considered it gimmicky. He cynically put his mind to the task of creating (I think) a sculpture that was deliberately ugly, tasteless, bland, or whatever that was unworthy of the name "art" in his view. He won the competition.

27 Oh my gwad what did they do to that beemer? Looks like it may be a Tii which was a screamer when set up right. Miller Norben Head, 3/4 cam, stiffer shocks and lower springs and you got it...the 320 that came after the 2002 totally sucked.

Oh it's a six banger... didn't look that big, must be the side skirts and spoiler make the body look smaller. I set up a 76 tii for a friend in the manner I mentioned also put on duel webber 42's. it was awesome until he drove it into a cliff drunk one night.

30 The CSL was a special version of the 3.0 CSi that had some body panels made of a lighter metal, a big spoiler and those big side scoops. The CSi was one of the prettiest cars BMW ever made, but the CSL, while a great car, kinda looks like a boy racer.

31 For my midlife crisis, I desperately wanted to get a 3.0 CSi, but ultimately found the proposition too expensive. I got a 635 CSi instead. Truly a great car, and a lot more practical than the 3.0.

Back in the day, every BMW was a work of automotive art. Now, not so much.

Ain't it the truth... Only Porsche still keeps the classic look. (911) They do retool the body panels but the change is negligible. Do you still have the 635?

33 34 Yes I do. It's the car I drive when I don't need to drive the van. It's in great running shape and decent cosmetically. I love it because it has all the modern things that I want (ABS, trip computer, low fluids lights) and none of the modern things I hate (spend money check engine light, airbags, nagging buzzers). Plus, it gets nearly 30 MPG on regular and still has that BMW performance.

37 The 635's engine is that magnificent six that BMW used in various configurations from the early Sixties to the late Eighties, the M30. It has so much flexibility that it can be slightly detuned, as it is in the 635, and still perform spiritedly--at least for its time. My wife's '04 330i blows its doors off, but that car is pure excess. You can put a hotter chip in the 635 and it gains some quickness, but then you have to use premium.

The Germans and Swedes did tend to stick to a basic block and modify for the car it was going in. That's why I liked working on them, not a lot of change.

Mutt" as part of his "readymades", he was making a deliberate swipe at Western mainstream "fine art" traditions of elevating anything to art simply by setting it on a pedestal. It hinges upon the fact that the modern art world is not unlike the characters of the fable, "The Emperor's New Clothes". No one wants to be seen as a Philistine, so patrons swallow whatever bullcrap an "artist" makes up -- and let's face it, usually on the spot -- about his/her "work". And they nod appreciatively even when they don't get it themselves. This in turn encourages a lot of "artists" who lack vision and skill but who can expertly craft a load of balderdash like no one else. These days, they just drop the "con" part out of their job title.
