Update [Gabe]: A 6.9er in Baja shook most of Southern California and was felt as far away as Scottsdale, Arizona.
Here in Hollywood, it was mostly long slow waves. The quake was notable only in that it lasted upwards of 30 seconds, which is a darn long time for an earthquake. The doors, cabinets, and shutters at my house all swung back and forth. Rather than do something smart, I twittered blasphemously mid-quake.
Update 2 [Gabe]: USGS just upgraded it to a 7.2. There have been many aftershocks, though only one that was felt up here in L.A. The civil authorities are suggesting that all of Southern California take precautions for more shakes in the next few days.
Some friends called and said that their cars had shifted position, I'm gonna run out and see if mine is still good.
Glad to hear the San Diego folks are okay.

Out east in Claremont it was a very side to side motion, but rather rapid. Others that I've felt since being here have either been very directional, more as you seem to be describing, or more of a general rumble. Some even seem to have a sound associated with them. I noted the time and think it was about 90 seconds after the quake hit Baja.
Having lived in tornado country and in places with other sorts of violent natural events, like hurricanes, I find earthquakes quite interesting. They have no beginning or end to them - just the event itself - so they are really different from storms that you feel coming and then watch dissipate. If someone isn't with you, it is odd because it's as if you may have imagined it. So far I haven't been in any really big ones, but have been woken from a sound sleep by a couple.

As I said, earthquakes aren't felt equally even within a mile or so. I had a manager who lived in Northridge during the 94 quake, her house stayed up while the ones on both sides of her were knocked down

Father and sister lives in El Centro, about 40-50 miles north of epicenter. Dad also went through the 1940 event and said that this one felt worse. Power is out in Imperial County.
Also felt here in Orange County. A good S-wave (for you non-seismically inclined morons, that the long rolling wave).

During the 94 Northridge quake part of one of the major freeways collapsed. A cop on a motorcycle went over the edge because he didn't see it had fallen in the dark. And that quake was "only" a 6.5, I think.

If you look at USGS, they are always getting a lot of earthquakes. This is the biggest this year. Someone on twitter said it was farmland and I looked up on google using the town name and it looked like farmland to me too. That's odd that they would say densely populated unless the city was struck and that is densely populated?

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake has hit the Mexican peninsula of Baja California, US officials say, and has been felt in Los Angeles and even in Nevada.
The quake struck at 1540 (2240 GMT), 26km (16 miles) south-west of Guadalupe Victoria in Baja California, at a depth of 32km, said the US Geological Survey.
There have been reports of broken windows and some structural damage but no word of casualties or major damage.
In San Diego, tall buildings were seen swaying.

The thing about the Northridge quake was it was centered almost directly under the area, fairly shallow IIRC (only about 10km, was it?). I was living in the opposite end of the San Fernando Valley (Sunland-Tujunga) when it happened. A hard shaking, followed by a "pop-pop-pop-pop" at my duplex. I went outside, and a telephone pole was swaying enough that I thought I had better move my car. Later found out that the 'popping' was the rafters in the house giving way. The place was eventually red-tagged.

Yah, that was one of the healthier ones...
Funny story: I was working at Shelby Automotive in '89 when we had what I call Whittier II (I think it was actually considered an aftershock of the original Whittier quake in '87). I was on the assembly line installing engines in the Shelby Dakotas. Both lines, trucks are up in the air on 2-post racks having some chassis assembly work done. Earthquake comes rumbling through, lasting less than 10 seconds. Most of us are California natives, we're used to this sort of thing. We get out from under, wait for the shaking to stop, then go back to work. Not the assembler from New York. It took several minutes to calm him down. No sooner than we all finally get back into rhythm, another shaker comes through. The natives step out, wait for the end, then get back to work. Not our friend from New York- he breaks into a running trot, runs out the front of the building, makes a running leap off of the loading dock, and runs home- about 3 miles. We never saw him again. Word was he went back to New York.

The news is a little overblown in the Los Angeles area. I was at an Easter gathering in the San Fernando valley and I didn't even feel. Less than half the people did. The only way we were sure it actually happened was that the pool was sloshing around and the chandelier was swinging.
In Baja, however, they might be in a world of hurt.
