Earthquake In Haiti
— DrewM

At this point the death and damage is pretty much beyond comprehension.

Haitian President René Préval issued an urgent appeal for his earthquake-shattered nation Wednesday, saying he had been stepping over dead bodies and hearing the cries of those trapped under the rubble of the national Parliament.

Préval, in his first interview since the earthquake, said the country was destroyed and he believed there were thousands of people dead but was reluctant to provide a number.

``We have to do an evaluation,'' Préval said, describing the scene as ``unimaginable.''

``Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed,'' he said. ``There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them.''

The U.N. said casualties were ``vast'' but impossible to calculate.

The International Red Cross said a third of Haiti's nine million people may need emergency aid and that it would take a day or two for a clear picture of the damage to emerge, the Associated Press reported.

Obviously the US military is going to play a significant role in relief efforts. Right now there's talk of sending the aircraft carrier USS Vinson and an amphibious assault ship to the island. The biggest issue will be fresh water as well as a large fleet of helicopters to ferry supplies, especially to hard to reach areas. Given that reports are that most if not all hospitals are destroyed, I wouldn't be surprised to see the DoD move in the hospital ship USNS Comfort.

Once chilling note...some early estimates are that upwards of 500,000 people may be dead. That would represent 5% of the population.

Even at half that.....

Oh yeah, idiot extraordinaire Pat Robertson knows why so much tragedy has befallen the Haitian people...they made a pact with the Devil.

13 Roads in Haiti are generally sketchy and in poor condition.  Anything not right on a beach pretty much qualifies as "hard to reach".

14 Haiti is one of the most busted-luck places on earth. It shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, but while the DR manages to make their half of the island a rather nice place, the Haitians have -- through mismanagement, avarice, and plain old bad luck -- made their half into a hellhole. And how Mother Nature gives them a kick in the balls just for the sheer fuckery of it. Seriously: Haitians are the poorest of the poor. You'd have to go to a place like Afghanistan or Sudan to find people as poor as they are. I don't doubt that the damage is extensive because most of their buildings are rickety to begin with, and haven't seen any upkeep in decades. If you have the wherewithal, please give whatever you can spare. I plan to donate through my church as we have several missionaries there (I pray they are safe...), but do whatever you can. This most recent tragedy is just the last in a long line of them for the poor Haitian people.

38 The United States actually invaded Haiti in 1915 and occupied it until 1934. That was the high point of Haiti's economy and prosperity; when the US pulled out and handed the reins back to the Haitian pols, things went straight to shit and reached their nadir under the Duvaliers: "Papa Doc" and "Baby Doc". You really can't blame this one on imperialism or foreign interventions or any of the other usual leftist boogeymen; this is purely the result of a complete failure of the Haitians to govern themselves. The fact is, Haiti is barren -- it was not able to support the number of people living there even *before* this catastrophe. Now, if fresh water, food, and shelter are not provided in quantity and for several years, many Haitians will simply starve. This is one of the few cases where I'd advocate the UN declaring Haiti a protectorate and administering it directly.

I have been down there. Didnt see all that much of Haiti, more of the DR, but I already felt sorry for those people. It is mostly a very young population, I think the average age used to be around 18.  The AIDS epidemics keep the age down. At one time, there were about 2 % of the population with AIDS. Extreme poverty. I really didnt like that corner of the world.

Stiller, Hilton, other celebs urge quake relief Published: 1/13/10, 4:45 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) - Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton and Ben Stiller are among the celebrities and artists urging support for survivors of the earthquake in Haiti.

Stiller tweeted late Tuesday that "people in Haiti need our help and attention right now." Similar tweets are showing up from the likes of Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Adam Lambert and Ryan Leslie.

Singer Wyclef Jean has been tweeting about the earthquake and arrived in Haiti, his native country, on Wednesday. Publicist Leslie Chasky said he is focusing on his family, his Haitian charity, Yele, and responding to the disaster. Shakira, on her Web site, called for donations to Yele and to UNICEF.

Winfrey began her television talk show Wednesday by asking viewers to donate to the Red Cross. "This is a time where we, as a global nation, should come together and support those who are in need," Winfrey said.

56 But if any building in LA toppled in a 7.0 there'd be Congressional hearings and some contractors would end up rooming with OJ.

So far, from what's been said, only government-type buildings collapsed (Parliment, hospital, etc.).  Would be interesting to see how old the buildings were, what the seismic designs on the building were and how close/far the actual construction got was to the design.  A rough indicator would be to look for buildings of similar structural design and age as the ones that fell down and see how they fared.

Taking the more pessimistic approach, the best justice for any corrupticrats involved with these buildings would be for them to be inside them when it happened.

64 These people already have so little, then to be hit with something like this. It's really sad.

On another note I'm curious how much the international community will pitch in to help and how many nations will sit back and let the US handle it all.  I recall Turkey gave more money to the families of suicide bombers than they gave for tsunami relief in 2004.

66 This entire region is extremely unstable.  Immediately to the West of Haiti is Jamaica.  In the 17thy century its largest city was Port Royal, then a den for pirates and privateers.  In 1692 it collapsed in an earthquake, sinking over two-thirds of the city under 25 feet of water.  It was rebuilt and then sunk after another earthquake in 1907.  Today around only 2,000 people live there.  Regrettably, this is probably Haiti's long-term future as well.

The LSD's also have good medical facilities. All the amphibs (L-class ships) carrry extra beds for Marines, too - nearly 2000 on the Bataan, which could all be used to give a clean place to sleep and eat for those without homes.

Posted by: Monty at January 13, 2010 04:47 PM (4Pleu)

How do you reboot a country?  Really a lot of people criticize previous generations for being imperialists and believing in the white man's burden but, how else do you even begin to try to fix Haiti?

Haiti is  a failed state.  It is no better than a tribe of natives in the Brazilian jungle.  Those guys would not be recognized as a country, yet, we pretend that Haiti is one.  Only a complete takeover and administration from outside for a couple of decades followed by partial administration for two decades more would allow Haiti to be a country again.  It's like the movie, The Mouse that Roared.  If Haiti started giving refuge to Al Qaeda, we would surely invade.

Would Jamaica volunteer instead?  I know the Dominicans are willing to take over but only if there are no Haitians left; they've already done enough harm to the island.

Just how far off is Pat Robertson, if the "devil" described was marxism. enforced by Voodoo?

"Failed state" doesn't begin to describe the nature of what Haiti has become, even prior to this not unforeseeable event!

I heard that, too.  The death toll is going to be astronomical in this.  Having lived through a fairly major earthquake in California, I can't even imagine what it would be like to experience a magnitude 7 in such an ill-equipped and impoverished place.  It's really heartbreaking.

97 Ironically those who survive might actually get some work in reconstruction that was never there before.

In the meantime, they're in a world of hurt, especially since they were hit by a Cat 5 hurricane a few summers ago.

100 Once again, I would like to thank Pat Robertson for making all Christians look like illiterate fucking douchebags.  Thanks, dickweasel.

Now, if I can pimp a charity that actually gets shit done, http://www.iocc.org/

If you want to do something concrete, assemble some of their "health kits", which will not only be so incredibly important in a place like Haiti, but will probably constitute immeasurable wealth to these impoverished folk.  http://tinyurl.com/yc4xe9e

On the health kits, browbeat the shit out of the toothless manager of the local Big Lots or call in a favor from that Wal-Mart Asst Mgr you used to hose and explain what you're doing and you can usually get the ingredients for a song.  Which means more stuff for the folks who need it.

Roberston believes, as per the Bible, that nations bring disaster on themselves when they, through their leaders particularly, "turn away from God". Any Christians or Jews out there in Moronland who don't believe that too, could you please show me in the Tanak or the NT where God says he stopped the whole bestowing and removing His blessings on countries & peoples thing?

And to all you conservatives who hate Pat Robertson (and any other known Christian who speaks publicly) 'cause the MSM use his mutterings to bash you with, don't waste your time, the MSM will never stop even when he's dead. They hate you just as much as they hate Pat. No matter what you say, if you don't vote Dem, to them you are the same as Pat Robertson.

Oh, and as Americans, you should be prepared to die to preserve Pat's right to say whatever the hell he wants, whenever he wants, about whomever he wants (except for the common "fire-in-a-crowded-theatre restrictions)--especially when he's not paying for the microphone with your taxes!

126 Also prayers and condolences to the people there.  It is not surprising the US military will help.  The men and women the left-tards hate so much.  The Army Combat Engineers should open/fix the airport first.  That will allow much needed supplies to be air lifted in by Air Force cargo planes.  It is not surprising the Navy has gone to help already.  I wish the survivors and service members well.  God speed and good luck.

141 Where is the outrage over the Obama admin's response to the earthquake.  Recall all the screams over Bush not doing enough--soon enough-- for New Orleans?   News agencies were able to get people into the stricken area within 12 - 15 hours, but no first responders?   Where are the FEMA-type leaders?  Wouldn't you send in recon to assess the situation and prioritize the response?  Besides the obvious of communications, water, food... maybe security.   But, almost 48 hours later and all we hear is that relief people are "on the ground."  Amazing.   I understand the issues of a broken airport and poor roads, etc.  But its a 2 or 3 hour flight from most of the Southern U.S.    European and Asian team arrived ahead of the US response!

Oliver North testified in his Iran/Contra hearings that we needed electronic eavedropping in the Middle-East.  In 36 hours there was a ship fully rigged with equipment, painted marked and flagged as Norweigien, and off-shore monitoring communications... in 36 hours.    2 days after a quake... no people, no equipment, no water, no food, no security forces, no mobile cell sites, no US aid.

And, apparenly, no out-cry, this time
