I am convinced we're looking at something bigger than 1994. And I remember the denial on the left even on election night that year.
Johnny Coldcuts, the foul-mouthed time-traveling meth-head baloney sandwich already saw what happens on the night of November 2nd, and this is what he told me:
Chris Matthews: "Bob Shrum, tell me why Republicans shouldn't take this as a mandate... Wouldn't you say that this is just the public asking for a breather from so much change, just for a little bit, and not the mandate we're starting to hear buzz of from the rightwing?"
Bob Shrum: "Absolutely, Chris, this election wasn't a referendum on Obama or his policies at all, it was just an anti-incumbent election and since most Congressmen were Democrats, it stands to reason that they took the brunt of it."
Chris Matthews: "In a way, wouldn't you say this is sort of the public giving a big thumb's up to Obama's policies? A big endorsement?"
Bob Shrum: "Ermmm... how?"
Chris Matthews: "Because the public likes Obama's policies so much they wanted to put Republicans into office to endorse them so they'd have real bipartisan staying power."
Bob Shrum: "Uhhh... okay, okay, I see where you're going with that... sort of... So... Sure, I guess in a way this is a backhanded endorsement of... Okay, Chris, I'm sorry, I was with you on the 'no mandate' thing but I can't go with you here. A man has limits. I have a career as a professional political consultant, you know."
Chris Matthews: "Right, understood... would you say then that this is Barack Obama's moment to shine?"
Bob Shrum: "What on earth could that possibly mean?"
Chris Matthews: "Nothing, really. Just sort of sounds good. Hopeful."
Bob Shrum: "Is it important to you that I say it?"
Chris Matthews: "Very."
Bob Shrum: "Okay, this is Barack Obama's moment to shine."
Chris Matthews: "Well that is the clearest Big Picture idea I've heard this evening -- Bob Shrum saying this is Barack Obama's moment to shine. And coming up next on Hardball's continuing election night coverage -- big upset a-brewin' in the tightly contested race for Milwaukee Inspector of Public Records. Does the underdog Democrat have a chance? Will this turn the Democrats into the comeback kids of the night? Stay tuned."

I think it's bigger than '94 too. I remember the mild discontent with the Clintons and their silly healthcare plans. And Bill's childish lying. I remember a town hall where someone told Cliton he acts like "my six year old child" when I've caught him with the chocolate or something. That was the kind of problem people had with Clinton back then. Also, there was an uncomfortableness with Hillary apart from her development of the healthcare balogna plan.
Now, people are flat out pissed off. And it couldn't have gone any other way, the way they kept passing shit people didn't want. Hard to believe the pols that that was the clever thing to do.

She's going to win. Along with every other GOP candidate in a "close" race, and others who aren't even supposed to be even close.

This administration has arrived at Lenin's epiphany just before his death: It doesn't work. And because they are unable to admit that it does not work, they'll fall back to the cliches. But "recovery summer," "put it in D" and "you're a racist" will not cover up the fact that "It doesn't work."

Someone, if you're talking to me, I disagree with your understanding of my comments about Angle. I didn't pick up the lefty line on her, whatever that means.
She's an absurd pick in a race where victory is so badly needed. I wanted the race not to even be close--the way it would have been with Tark or Lowden. Yes, Angle might win, but I'm bothered that I have to worry about it.
Posted by: rdbrewer at August 13, 2010 06:24 PM (HU8ik)
You are correct, there is just no way to cover up mistakes of this magnitude. The question is whether the Republican Party will be able to take the mandate that I fully expect them to receive from the American people, and do something constructive.

Yup. Lowden would have crushed Reid.
If I'm going to take a chance on an upstart, out of nowhere candidate, she/he better have some charisma, campaigning skills, and ready to break out once they become better known.
Angle is going to win because her opponent is a scum bag. I'll take it, but its not a good strategy normally.

But let's be realistic about the coming November. The left is going to do everything they possibly can (in conjunction with the MFM) to steal this, no matter how blatant, obvious, or downright jaw-dropping they have to be.
Remember, Al Franken is a senator now. And while some perhaps cocked their eyebrows a bit, or perhaps chuckled over "These kids today!" or otherwise excused what was the most obvious vote-stealing sham in history..the fact is, he's a senator. And you're not.
The left and MSM are going all out to portray Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Maxine Waters and Charlie Rangle as embattled veterans in the forces of good. Some people only get their news from TV, or worse, are liberals and cannot change their minds ever.
November comes. Does it bring victory, or blood? It's too early to say.

68 - Seriously on point.
I think that Chicago reject moment was the exact instance when the hopium wore off for a lot of people. The Cambridge cop comment slapped some folks awake, but those people were sort of on a contact high. The true hopium smokers probably didn't see the light until Daley-ville got pissed on. This guy was supposed to make the world love us, win a nobel prize, and cure cancer - but he couldn't get a graft tapeworm like the IOC to nest in the belly of that hog? What a fucking poser!
I think that grounded him for a lot of people and he's never been able to get airborne since. Every subsequent economic woe, or natural disaster, or international incident weigh him down to the point where his soaring rhetoric looks and sounds very silly. And when you add to that the self-inflicted stupidity like the war on AZ, Aunt Esther's Spanish Armada and supporting the ground zero mosque - well - he may be looking at a 48% ceiling on his potential take in 2012.
As that 48% number becomes a solid reality to powerbrokers on the left, it will become clear that Obama needs a Ross Perot badly. I think you're going to see Ron Paul get a few money bombs thrown his way. He's the only candidate who could be tempted to run 3rd party with the potential to pull 5% or more from the Republican nominee. THAT is the real danger, my friends.

The R's can't repeal shit without the signature of the President. Best they can hope for is to choke off funding. Until 2012.
Just in time for Obama and the MFM to blame Republicans. Remember the GOP got hung with intransigence in the 90's, not Clinton. Even though Clinton was in the way of the reform people voted for in '94.
So. Obama doesn't care about '10. In fact, if the GOP wins, his chances will be better in '12. He'll have something to blame.

If the person who did it has a (D) after their name, it was a good thing to do. If the person has an (R) after their name, it was bad.
My example: if G.W. Bush rescued some orphans from a fire that B.H. Obama had set, they would say, "Well, obviously those kids would grow up to be NAZIS (conservatives, others who would vote against Dems)! So naturally Bush would want to save them, and Obama would know they were evil!"
There is no, repeat NO reasoning with Liberals.

Colt just bought his second big-boy suit for a new job. The fabulous salesman told him that for a mere $8.00, the pants could have the "Traveller's Crease," which he advertised as a perfect pants crease which would never, ever go away.
Colt, as he does in all things clothes-related, looked to me for guidance. I nodded to him to go ahead. "You want to be liked by David Brooks, don't you?"

Just in time for Obama and the MFM to blame Republicans. Remember the GOP got hung with intransigence in the 90's, not Clinton. Even though Clinton was in the way of the reform people voted for in '94.
People are waaaaaaaaaay more pissed off now than back then, the economy is dragging, 55% still favor repeal of Obamacare, you also have TARP, the failed stimulus, all the bailouts, etc. And there is no one on the GOP side to fill the lightning rod role the way that Gingrich did in the '95 budget battle and I think that even though they are the Party of Stupid they will be hesitant to find someone that polarizing. (And Gingrich did come across as a snotty asshole, plus he has a face that seems to be constantly sneering along with an unfortunate last name.)
I just don't know if anyone really knows how pissed off people are. My wife who doesn't really follow politics much was extremely animated the other day to the point of mentioning how much she was ready to vote and wished it was Election Day. She brought this up all on her own. My mother-in-law who doesn't pay much attention at all is very upset about all the tax increases that are coming next year and knows exactly why they're being increased. My wife's aunt and her husband (both in their 60s) are Michigan residents who attended their first protest ever last year, a Tea Party, and they are irate. This is all anecdotal evidence, but when I hear more and more and more of these anecdotes I get the impression that this runs a lot deeper than any one can really tell.
As for the Republicans, they better figure out pretty damn quick that this is a tidal wave that stands to sweep them into power based on little more than the fact that they are not Democrats, but if they'd get out in front of this they could make the tidal wave even bigger. But they'd better also understand that come next year their asses are going to be held accountable and if they don't make good then they'll be the next ones to go. Part of me wonders if that's the reason they aren't saying anything; maybe they think if they don't make any promises to the voters then they can't be accused of breaking them.

124 I don't know, but I do know that Dicky Durbin just pissed off a whole bunch of folks (well, him and the DoE) in south east central IL. People are calling for an investigation, calling to have him sent home...now, if not yesterday.
And it isn't just conservatives or Republicans that are screaming for it; it's a whole lot of everybody...and yeah, they are starting to blame the man child as well. It could turn into political capital...then again, it's something the Republicans in this state are going to have to handle cautiously -- the incumbents downstate at least and Kirk as well.
If there was ever a time when Repubs could sweep IL, now until 12 could be it -- IF they would just play it right. People are pissed off in this state (I've heard that even in the Chi this is becoming so; I know it to be true down here).

176 Lots of folks are starting to see them as such. When you have staunch Durbin supporters writing letters to his office calling him a traitor and a liar, wishing he was out of office now, when you have newspaper editors calling Durbin and "Big Fed" out in their editorials (not much, but it's a start)...then something has changed.
The question is, will the GOP take this up and run with it? I hope they do. There could be repercussions, and they may not be pretty -- but something has to give; it's giving right now imho.

Not to harsh everyone's mellow, but....
IF the Donks do get an ass-kicking on November 2nd, there could be a very troubling "lame duck" session following.
Unencumbered by any need to worry about voters response, and desperate to please their potential K-Street employers, their federal-appointment granting President and their DNC position allocating party bosses, we could see the balance of the prog agenda rammed thru the House by pelosi and her willing soon-to-be booted minions: Card Check, Fairness Doctrine, Amnesty, Cap & Trade, etc. could well come up for votes.
Whether they can muster the Maine sisters or a few other RINO's in the Senate to pass these measures will make all the difference as Barry will sign whatever makes his desk.
In their death throes, the Dems make just try and take all of us down with them.
Bottom line, winning back the House in November and deposing Pelosi would be great, but the odds of getting a veto-proof majority in either house, let alone both, are very long. Repealing, or even just defunding, part of the Obama agenda will require bloody trench warfare against the Dems and a media who will shill for him like never before.

I don;t think that the Dems will go to a scorched-earth policy of trying to ram everything through...I may sound naive here, but I can;t see the RINO's going along with anything like that after such a cataclysmic election. One of the local hotels rented out a ballroom to a group of black gentlemen who wanted to put on a "urban music" festival. Well, it's letting out around 2am this morning and I, in full uniform, wander up and make smalltalk. I ask him how it went and he says they only got 50% of what they were expecting. I reply that with the way the economy is, a lot of people are saving what they can and they don't have very much disposable income for entertainment. He agrees, pointing out that he's feeling the pinch as well, especially as he lives in NYC.
He's being very friendly with me, but I'm getting a definite Malcolm X "fight The Man" vibe from him. I remark "well, hopefully the economy will turn around soon."
He looks at me and replies "Yeah, I'm guessing about two to three years."
Me: "Really? What makes you figure that?"
Him: "Hopefully we'll have somebody in charge that's not intent of destroying our economy."
I left feeling... hopeful.

Drudge headlines the public's increasing distrust turning to anger against the media. There's hope to change people's habits when they are disgusted with what they have, and disgusted with what abuse they realize they are taking, even paying to take through subscriptions, etc. Even if only to establish doubt and fear in the opponent still stuck on stupid.
It's what Allen allowed to be made of it, FORCED to disappear by the hypersensitive guilty-white-complex "bipartisan to be politically correct" Republican establishment. AS IF the people hung up over "macaca" were going to vote for Allen any way, had he never said it, had he not called out his antagonizer, or after any number of apologies. After swallowing "mongrel" from Obama without blinking, OBVIOUSLY it's never what a Republican says or doesn't say that motivates Democrats to vote for Democrats, or Leftists to smear opponents with racism.
Republicans need to get over their own hang-ups, whether self righteous (I'd never say that!) or ashamed and vindictive (how dare he say that and by inference of party affiliation smear me as "inappropriate" in this PC society). The PC mask, after all, is simply a Dorian Grey portrait.

1. The electorate
2. Lack of fraud
3. No November surprise
4. The GOP
5. The electorate
48%er (since we're among friends, may I call you "forty"?), this is a good list. And yes, we would be idiots to take anything for granted. But I don't think "faith" is the right word. This is a matter of observation, not blind trust. To elaborate on your points:
1. As for the electorate, people will be short-sighted and venal, as usual; but the administration has screwed so many people so often and so hard that a significant number are sitting up and taking notice. Even more important, I think, are the PR gaffes. Obama's acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize was a huge blunder; along with his attack on Massachusetts cop, and the gaudy vacations, and the photo-ops with sports celebrities. People are noticing that, in Sarah Palin's memorable phrase, the columns are made of styrofoam. Nothing in life is so infuriating as having been taken in by a con man, not just because he's a thief and a liar, but because he makes you look like a fool. I think the electorate is waking up to the fact that we've been taken in by one of the biggest cons in American history, and people are mad as hell about it.
2. Fraud is certainly a possibility. Allow me to rephrase that: Democrats being Democrats, fraud is a certainty. However, there's a limit to how much they can steal. That is one aspect of the genius of the federal system that is underappreciated: no matter how many votes the Democrats in congressional district A steal, it doesn't affect the outcome in congressional district B in the slightest. We will lose some close races to Democratic vote fraud: you can take that to the bank. If it weren't true, we wouldn't be reading about Senator Franken today. But I think the coming tsunami is so high that it will overwhelm much of the fraud.
3. As for a November surprise, it's hard to imagine what Obama could do that would swing the electorate to his camp. War with Iran? If that were his intention, he'd be ratcheting up crisis now; but if anything, he's moving in the opposite direction.
Also, bear in mind that that sort of brinksmanship and cold calculation requires cujones, to use Sarah Palin's term; and clearly, our commander-in-chief is cujone-challenged.
What is more worrisome is that some of Obama's foreign - I almost wrote "allies", but that's getting into conspiracy theory territory, so let's say "well-wishers" - will manufacture a crisis for his benefit. Perhaps an attack. Maybe some sabre rattling, something of that sort. But for that to be effective, Obama will have to respond competently and forcefully: and does anyone, anywhere, honestly think that he's capable of that? No, such an attack would simply underscore Obama's basic incompetence, and simply give people yet another reason to hate him.
4. The GOP. Ah, the GOP, God bless 'em. There, you're spot-on: the GOP is Obama's ace in the hole. Not because they will be too conservative, as the MFM commentators assert; but because they will not be principled enough. Once you've been taken by a con man, you're doubly distrustful, especially of people who are all flash and no substance. Because people are looking for an alternative to Obama's three-card-monte game, I think they want substance, at least for now. This is one of those times when sober appraisals and serious discussion will find an audience. The GOP should seize this opportunity with both hands.
5. The GOP is the party that, philosophically, has the most realistic grasp of how badly humanity can behave en masse, yet how high we can rise as individuals and communities. The Democrats are the opposite: they distrust the individual and have faith in the mob. The Democrats are clever in that, because mobs can be manipulated far more easily than individuals; but over the last two years, their all-out assault on the individual and his (and her) autonomy has made many people sit up in alarm. The Democrats have badly overplayed their hand; just how badly, we'll find out in November.
So, "faith"? No. "Hope"? Yes, for once.

The first Rasmussen Reports post-primary telephone survey of likely Connecticut voters finds that Democrat Richard Blumenthal has slipped below the 50 percent mark of support against Republican Linda McMahon in the stateÂ’s U.S. Senate race.
Blumenthal, the stateÂ’s longtime attorney general, picks up 47 percent of the vote, while McMahon earns 40 percent. Five percent prefer some other candidate, and 7 percent remain undecided.
Support for McMahon is unchanged from last month, despite her GOP primary win Tuesday. BlumenthalÂ’s support is down 6 points since last month. In June, Blumenthal held a 56 percent to 33 percent lead over McMahon, the former head of Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment.
