Actor Simon MacCorkindale dies aged 58
15 October 2010
Actor Simon MacCorkindale, who starred in BBC One's Casualty, has died aged 58 after suffering from cancer. His publicist, Max Clifford, said he died in the arms of his wife, actress Susan George, on Thursday night in a London Clinic.
He spent six years on the BBC medical drama as Dr Harry Harper. He was also known for starring in 1980s series Manimal and Falcon Crest and appearing in the 1978 Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile.
Ms George said: "No-one could have fought this disease any harder than he did since being diagnosed four years ago. "He fought it with such strength, courage and belief. Last night, he lost this battle, and he died peacefully in my arms.
"To me, he was simply the best of everything, and I loved him with all my heart. He will live on in me forever."
Simon MacCorkindale and Fiona Fullerton MacCorkindale was previously married to actress Fiona Fullerton from 1976-1982
Born in Cambridge, MacCorkindale intended to follow his father into the RAF, but his deteriorating eyesight meant he had to follow an alternative path. He began his career in theatre, making his West End debut in a production of Pygmalion, before moving to the small screen.
He moved to the US after the success of Death on the Nile where he had roles in various TV series including Dynasty, Hart to Hart and The Dukes of Hazzard before securing the lead in adventure series Manimal. His last television appearance was on BBC series New Tricks earlier this year.
John Yorke, controller of BBC drama production, said the actor was owed a "massive debt" for his work in Casualty. "Not only was he a fabulously iconic consultant, he was also an inspirational team leader," Mr Yorke said. "Simon had an extraordinary career encompassing - amongst many other things - matinee idol, Hollywood lead, film and theatre director, film producer and horse breeder. "That amazing energy and appetite for life remained with him to the end.

Mile High Fun: Airline to Sell 'Cuddle Class' Seating
(Oct. 15) -- Economy air travel need no longer be referred to as "cattle class," and passengers don't have to squeeze into tight seats.
Beginning next year, money-conscious long-haul travelers can take "cuddle class" and book a row of seats that convert into a couch or bed.
/Will this make joining the Mile-High Club a bit easier? I shiver at the though.

Actually, it's not precisely a Chinese dish, and it's made with a lot of variations in my experience (the one I liked best didn't use breading). Its history is quite modern. IIRC the original version was concocted in Taiwan, then the creator adapted a more American version for New York. The full tale is given in Fuchsia Dunlop's Hunan cookbook. I wonder whether the dish has ever been made in China by anyone.

The GPS coordinates led me to a safe deposit box at a local bank, and I was shocked to find out what was inside:
-A brown paper bag filled with dog poo.
-Matches
-A map to Harry Reid's house
-A half empty can of Crisco
-A tangle of fishing line
-Lots of pictures of Ewoks doing unspeakable things
-A six pack of butterscotch pudding
-An empty Val-U-Rite bottle
-A very disturbing photoshop of Marco Rubio's head on what I can only assume to be Chris Christie's body.
-A bust of Churchill
-A template of the flaming skull and a coupon for 10% off of tattoo service.
-Bail money
-Last of all, there a note saying "November 2nd, Be the Wave!--and by wave I mean Guy Who Puts a Bag of Flaming Poo on Harry Reid's porch"

Yes, at least the majority of places near strip-malls. The presence of the chicken fingers and cheese pizza in such places always amused me.
There is one small joint by my school that serves more "authentic" Chinese (Northern Chinese, I believe) food. My family has been going there for years. We have a good rapport with the head chef "Bob", (we tried to pronounce his name once, but it was impossible).

Sinatra is great. I've talked about my mancrush on PR, but it doesn't compare to Ole Blue Eyes. If I had to be trapped in a city in a certain era, it just might be Vegas in the early 60s with the rat pack and all the perks it would entail.
The man lived a life every guy (mostly) would be envious of. He did it his way for the most part, just like the song.

Having actually visted China and eaten their food, three things:
1) in the North and West of China, the meals have a lot of noodles in them; this is because it is wheat growing country
2) in the South and East, the meals have rice in them, because it is rice-growing country.
3) there is usually not a lot of meat in meals in China because meat is expensive and more rare than in Europe or the Americas.
That all said, real Chinese meals and food is pretty good in most places. Frequently very fresh vegetables, some unusual but tasty variations, sometimes good beer (Tsingtao comes to mind). The Chinese are 'oral' people (as a Chinese guy I know told me) and they love to eat. But their concept of breakfast is pretty weird. Glad I took some granola bars with me.

Isn't the sun supposed to run out of fuel around that time? My understanding is that Venus and Mercury will likely be destroyed while the earth will survive (although either cooked or without an atmosphere). That's going to be an interesting problem to solve.
On the plus side we have almost 4 billion years to do so.

It really depends where you live. The Bay Area has some reasonably authentic Cantonese food, though not approaching the quality you can get in, say, Hong Kong. New York has its own style of "Chinese food" which is quite tasty, though not too much resembling the real thing except for some nice dumplings. Outside of those areas, it's hard to find something resembling the real thing (though Toronto and Vancouver BC come very close).
Oh, and with all the talk of anteater -- real Chinese food is mostly not hard to like, except that some of the weirder dishes take some acclimation. But that's generally more of a texture issue, not weird flavors. If you go to Beijing, you can find fresh-grilled scorpion on a stick. But the same place will have sticks of chicken meat or duck hearts that are delicious and accessible.

Now an all-male school may get a slightly higher proportion of gay applicants ("it's ALL-MALE? OOOOO!!") but otherwise they get their ashes hauled like everyone else.
Posted by: Trimegistus
When I was there in the early-mid 80's, a student tried to get a Gay Student Alliance going. Only one professor came forward to support it.
As for how conservative the student body is, I was a Dem at the time, and I was more conservative than a lot of Republicans of the time.
Professors were pretty conservative too. Spanish professor fled Cuba when Castro took over. He had been in the government down there and he was going out the back door as Castro's men were coming in the front. Used to pack heat in class too since Castro put a price on him back then, and he thought death squads were coming after him. My Poli Sci advisor taught "Socialism, Communism, Marxism, Leninism and Stalinism". Conservative? He would laugh when he read passages from them.

Cayman Islands have turtle meat there since they have a huge farm for raising sea turtles. The farm is so successful that they are able to provide enough meat for consumption and realease hundreds into the wild every year.
There was an article on the intertubes about it recently and how farms of this type would actually increase the number of turtles in the wild while providing the tasty meat.

In H.S. I remember a girl running for student council by the name of Karen Beavers. Yeah. Beavers.
Her campaign slogan was "Leave it to Beavers".
A few of my enterprising friends, in an Alinsky type maneuver decided to alter her campaign posters by writing "MY" in between "to" and "Beavers".
She lost.

Obama Blinks at Beijing's Bullying.
In response to North Korea's unprovoked and deadly attack on the South Korean ship, the Cheonan, we recently conducted a naval exercise with South Korea. Beijing answered by conducting a regional naval drill with Australia -- without inviting us.Meanwhile, Chinese "fishermen" (in fact members of the military) have clashed with Japan's fishermen and Coast Guard officers in an attempt to conquer some remote Japanese islands famous for their rich fishing harvests. On Sept. 7, Tokyo arrested a Chinese captain over one incident -- but later felt obliged to release him, a marked humiliation.

These days it's all FOX News, C-Span, & Fox Business. With the occasional tbs or FOX or something for House.

Blasts hit secret Iranian missile launching-pad for US, Israeli targets
Iranian military installation was struck by a triple blast Tues. Oct. 12 the day before Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Lebanon. debkafile's military and intelligence sources report the site held most of the Shehab-3 medium-range missile launchers Iran had stocked for striking US forces in Iraq and Israel in the event of war - some set to deliver triple warheads (tri-conic nosecones).

Posted by: Chris in VaAh, Mark Warner, the second coming of Chuck Robb. Dim as a fucking post, but all the Dems claim he is "Presidential Timber".
Dirty little secret about Chuck Robb, he did bang Tai Collins. Not the massage he claimed, not the "rub and a tug", full on monkey sex. Many times. I knew several of her friends, and many of his apologists, the man was a serial liar and sleazeball. But he did learn from the best, LBJ.
Another dirty little secret. All those "Economic Development" trips that Governors take are just taxpayer funded romps with their misstresses. The only Virginia Dem Governor that was actually truthful about those trips was Wilder. And that was because he was divorced and didn't give a shit about anyone knowing who he was banging.

Yep, multi runs off DICE's Battlefield engine and kinda plays like Bad Company 2 (which should be expected since DICE went to work on it right after Bad Company 2 came out). I just wish they would have had a clear picture when they were working on it as its a bad mish mash of stardard FPS and hardcore milsim. No matter with both betas and the final product, it still doesn't feel right. Rather play ArmA2 or Bad Company 2.
Yeah, the next CoD comes out next month.

What's the officer's name who ordered the recordings destroyed?!
Destruction of evidence, under order by whom? And why not protest the order rather than simply comply, given the significance?

Given the Clinton flap that Hillary would be Obama's next running mate gone mute, who'd be surprised if Obama were to make Condi his Sec./State? It isn't as if Condi were against Obama's foreign agenda, is it? She's been giving Obama advise on occasions all along. Condi's critics tagged her as an administrative conduit. This would prove her bipartisan statesmanship, a packaged selling point. Mountain out of a mole hill.

What could possibly be wrong with that generalized conclusion? Hm, begin with statistics. What percentage of people in Egypt today suffer from tumor cancers? Compare that percentage with the percentage of ancient Egyptians being represented by mummies found. Further consider that only Egyptians living in royal palace mummies were preserved in tombs to be "discovered" by British "scientists". How can a few ancient Egyptians who lived protected lives eating the very best diets available to any people in their day represent all of ancient Egyptians' health standard, and be basis for comparison with mixed-racial Western Civilization's modern health standard?
Posted by: maverick muse at October 16, 2010 04:44 AM (H+LJc)
One other thing to consider is the relative differences in age at death. On the average ancient Egyptians died at a much earlier age than people now. Most cancers occur in people at later ages, therefore that would also have a major impact.
Like most of these "studies" put out my libtard pseudo-scientists it is full of excrement.
Posted by: Vic at October 16, 2010 04:54 AM (/jbAw)
Most cancers are "internal" and the internal organs of the mummies were removed during their embalming process. So this so-called study was all about bullshit to begin with.
