If you go to Cook Political, they list 66 House districts as either "lean R", "tossup", or "lean D".  Meaning that they are all competitive.  The districts that are "solid R" or "likely R" total to 175.  So, to get to 218, the R's would need to take 43/66 competitive districts, assuming no surprises in the "likely R" or "solid R" districts.  It's doable but not a slam-dunk.

So I'm wondering, what can we in the AoSHQ horde do to affect the outcome?  I'm not suggesting we go all Redstate and start playing footsie with the RNC.  But I also don't want to sit on the sidelines and just watch the R's let this opportunity slip from their grasp.

I happened on a PBS documentary about the missing women of Juarez. A young woman described how she was coerced into some illegal activity by a policeman. He showed her an album of photographs depicting the gang rape and deaths of the disappeared young girls. Her description of the photographs was horrifying - they went to their death after being raped and sodomized by sadistic beasts who threw their heads back in laugter at their victims' screams.

Some of the women's bodies have been recovered, but most have not, and their families still grieve their lost daughters after many years.

What is especially heinous about these crimes is that law enforcement and some in the business community are complicit- the ones who lure the women with the promise of maquiladora jobs.

What is ironic since it has been a while on that score is that increasing taxes has NEVER resulted in decreasing the deficit.

I saw a study that was done a few years ago that said for every tax increase in history the average was an increase in spending of 1.25 for every 1 of tax increase.

The only time we have actually decreased the deficit was the big rebound after the Reagan tax cuts with a fiscally conservative Republican congress. 

All ya'll know the one. The years Clinton got all the credit for when he really had nothing to do with it.

No. I think the core Eurozone will survive (if not thrive).

It's the smaller nations that are causing the problem -- Greece should never have been in the Eurozone to begin with, nor Portugal (nor, probably, lots of the eastern nations). Germany opposed Greece's entry to begin with, which is why they're getting all soggy-and-hard-to-light right now. In fact, Germany's feeling about Greece is pretty analogous to that of other states to California: why should we pay for their fiscal failings? (In fact Greece is worse in that it basically lied about its finances to get in to begin with.)

Greece needs to get out of the Eurozone and get back to the drachma.  Only then can they devalue the currency and resolve their financial situation. The only possible way that they can stay in the Eurozone is with an EU/IMF bailout every year or two for...well, forever. And that ain't gonna happen. The kind of austerity the Greek government would have to undergo is completely impossible, given the socialist/union-controlled economy in that country. There'd be a civil war.

The grand designs of the Eurozone have been shown to be a complete sham, but the EU bureaucrats are still in denial about it. They'd rather see Greece blown to flinders than admit that the whole idea of a unified European currency was flawed.
