Eric Cantor: Democrats Are Bluffing; They're Around Seven Votes Down
— Ace

Byron York reporting:

he best way to look at it is not to ask whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi has gotten the 216 votes needed to pass the Democrats' national health care bill, but whether opponents have the votes to defeat it.

Start with all 178 GOP lawmakers. (There have been rumors that Rep. Joseph Cao, who was the only Republican to vote for the health bill the first time, is wavering, but Cantor says Cao is a firm no.) Beginning the count with 178 Republicans means that opponents need 38 Democrats to vote against the bill for it to be defeated.

...

[I]f there are in fact 32 original Democratic no votes that are still no votes, then Republicans need to find six other Democrats to vote no in order to defeat the bill. Cantor points to one original yes vote that has switched to no -- Arcuri -- and suggests there might be five others who could switch: Berry, Costa, Giffords, Lynch, and Space.

That leaves the much-discussed Stupak Group. The pro-life Democrat originally said he had 12 colleagues who originally voted yes but would now vote no. Stupak has lost some of those, but it is not clear how many.

Cantor suggests that in combining those two categories -- the yeses who have become no plus the Stupak group -- there might be another 12 votes against the bill. "If we add 12 to 32, we get 44 -- which leaves Speaker Pelosi seven votes short," Cantor concludes. Of course, if there are less than 32 original no votes who remain no votes, the margin is tighter.

But that's the problem -- a lot of these "no" votes weren't very serious the first time around.

The Dem leadership may be bluffing but sometimes it turns out you are bluffing with the best hand.

Cao will not likely be #216 but he's willing to be #217.  I still don't understand why.  He stands no chance at re-election.  Even if he switches parties.

Hate to tell you, but you're wrong.  The delay til Sunday is so they can say "72 hours!!1!1!".  They have the votes.  The "fence sitters" are no such thing, and we're to the windward side of some heavy bribery.

Posted by: Herr Morgenholz at March 19, 2010 02:32 PM (bkIR3)

64 Plain and simple, Cao should be purged from the party, if he votes for this thing.  He should be told by the GOP leadership in the House to take a walk and should not be given a penny by the party for any of his future campaigns.  Voting for this disaster of a bill is so antithetical to Republican principles that, to me, this forfeits his party membership.  No, I don't want a purity test and I do agree with getting the best candidate available in Left-leaning districts, but in the most egregious situations, like Cao, we need to put our foot down, especially now in an election year that should be very good for the party.

Having enemies among our midst has undermined us many times over the years.  It happens occasionally to the Dems., too, but far more to the GOP with the RINOs and other douches that want to look bipartisan.

65 Some of you eeyores really need to stfu for a second and chill out. Even if we lose this vote the dems are dead men walking come November. The GENERAL public disapproves of this plan. Now switch general public to ACTUAL voters in swing districts and this piece of shit is underwater 10 to 30 points in these districts based on polling done. So even if dems get this magical unicorn bump they're praying for, it will A) be small and B) not nearly enough to save these districts. Many are now already dead. Even those that voted no are mostly dead too now - due to the same cascade effect as happened to dems who voted against Clinton in 94. The relationship between blue dogs and their conservative districts is effectively dead now too. They'll never be trusted again when push comes to bribe. Many of these districts are very red and will NEVER flip back again according to barone. Now throw in the census - red states are picking up lots of seats (4 in Texas alone) while blue states will be losing seats. Congress will get much more conservative on this basis alone. And finally, the ultimate eeyore complaint is that we can never touch this. It's based on some degree of truth because of the history of entitlements. Well, guess what? Historically we haven't had trillion and a half dollar deducts ( and growing after this passes) either. The progs can promise golden unicorns and free skittles to their hearts content but if the money isn't there it isn't there. That's reality. "socialism works until you run out of other peoples money" as Thatcher once said. This April, maximize all your tax deductions - make sure you get every last cent you are owed. It's awfully hard to build progressive utopia without the consent of the governed. So stop acting like fucking eeyores. Don't get angry. Don't get upset. Get even. See you in November. We have some House cleaning to do. Let's get to work. Get even in November.

I agree wholeheartedly, but you shouldn't be surprised.  The man-child's only relevant experience was him campaigning to be president, which is why he reverts to doing it so much.  The guy would be in over his head if he were serving as a mid-level manager of a medium-sized firm.  Of course, if it were a public firm, he could pontificate to the shareholders about what he idiotically calls the "profits-to-earnings" ratio of the company's stock.  What a dope.

The end times are truely at hand.

Actually, I'm only a contemporary buzzkill.  I think the near future looks like shit.

But the medium term looks pretty good, because the corpulent masses appear to have stirred.  This "Health Care" bill, which is looking more and more like the "Enabling Acts" or the "Intolerable Acts", has lit a new fire.  Near term looks bad.  Because this will pass.  Telling yourself this won't pass is just foolishness.  They are committing sepukku in the midst of a Kamikaze mission, all the time screaming out the name of their man-god Emperor.  You don't reason with that shit.  You just try not to get splattered.

But they didn't read Yamamoto.

82 Am I a purist if I think Cao and Lindsey Graham are shitbags and should be thrown out of the Republican party?

Agree on Lindsey, but...

English is Anh "Joseph" Gao's second language and he struggles sometimes, especially when he's nervous.  I don't put much faith in NRO's report that he "hopes to reconsider."

He told WRNO Radio this morning that his Catholic faith could not let him vote for the Senate bill's abortion language, and later told Cantor that he was a reliable "No."

I don't think he's going anywhere.

Fair enough, as that is an awkward phrasing that sounds like an ESL, but he sure as fuck knows the difference between Yea and Nea.  His past votes have been highly unreliable.

84 Everyone is recognizing Mark Levin's lawsuit as being the forthcoming answere if this bill gets passed.  But please don't forget the states that have drawn up legislation to counter this.  I'm seeing perhaps injunctions to delay this shit bill at least long enough for our vote in November.  I'm hoping (and praying) that this next national election will be so overwhelmingly conservative, that many of the dem. congresscrapheads, who are up for re-election in 2012, will be shocked back to political reality.  Because I think their messiah/god-king will be gone.

85 73 It doesn't have to happen all at once. It can be taken down piece by piece. Moreover, the budget has to come out of the House. If the GOP talks the House, then they control the purse strings. They don't have to repeal it, all they need to do is refuse to fund it.

There is absolutely no reason to give up or quit.
