— Purple Avenger Undoubtedly just a mental lapse on his part to admit this.
...EU president Van Rompuy warned that the bloc risks irrelevance and the end of its expensive welfare programs if it can't speed up economic growth, forecast to expand by just 1 percent this year.So just as the Europeans are clue'ing up that their shit don't work, and money really doesn't grow on trees, the US is dumbing down and looking to follow their failed example."With 1 percent growth we can't finance our social model any more. With 1 percent structural growth we can't play a role in the world," he told the World Economic Forum in Brussels. "We need to double the economic growth potential that we now have."
Many are skeptical that can be achieved...
The New Dark Ages are upon us. All we need are a bunch of Huns and Vandals sacking the joint to make it complete.

And yet people will make this an excuse to quit capitalism all together because capitalism failed to grow the economy fast enough. Expect to soon hear "arguments" that capitalism failed because we can't have everything for free.

The uptown folks drive Porsches, they must make amends.
Worked hard watching Oprah most of my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord Obama, wonÂ’t you at least buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
Oh Lord Obama, wonÂ’t you buy me a health care plan?
Working to pay for it myself is too hard on me.
I want to get prescription drugs and a doctor for free,
So Lord Obama, wonÂ’t you buy me a health care plan ?
Oh Lord Obama, wonÂ’t you buy me a retirement on the town ?
Prove that youÂ’ll take care of me and buy my next round.
Oh Lord, wonÂ’t you buy me that big house down the block that I found?
IÂ’m counting on you, Lord Obama, please donÂ’t let me down.

You know The One with the never ending Hope and Change shtick
He's got a pad down on Pennsylvania avenue
He'll be passin' out little bottles of Obama Potion Number Nine
I'll tell him that I'm having trouble finding a job and making my mortgage payments
It's gotten even worse in these last few weeks
He'll kiss me on the cheek and he'll made a magic sign
He'll say "What you need is Obama Potion Number Nine"
He'll turn around and gave me a wink
He'll say "I'm gonna have my Michelle make it up right here in the White House sink"
It'll smell like Chicago, it'll look like socialist ink
I'll hold my nose, I'll close my eyes, I'll take a drink
I won't know if it is day or night
I'll start grabbin' everyone else's money that is in sight
But when there's nothin' left to grab
It'll break my little bottle of Obama Potion Number Nine

Forget Vandals and Hun. Europe is overdue for another knock down drag out war...
Posted by: Alex at May 10, 2010 10:05 PM (K9+WM)
Being as young as I was, and noting that the pattern of depressions roughly every thirty years (one for each generation) had ended in the '30s, I had hopes that the great scourge of a command economy might be on the verge of eradication as much as smallpox was. The forces of knowledge were being brought to bear on an ancient enemy of mankind.
You may well imagine my alarm, disgust, and dismay with today's crony capitalism, Marxism behind fake smiles, and machinations of the vampire squid. These are dark days, indeed, when complacent Europe is seeing the truth of Thatcher's "other people's money" quote, while the Chicago Machine drags the US into another cycle of socialist, envy-driven, wealth destruction against the will of the majority.
Against all that, however, I have a great advantage that younger people do not have -- I remember Jimmy Carter, and I remember Ronald Reagan. I remember the 1973 oil crisis, the embassy in Iran, a President that moped around saying how miserable things were, and a track record of 20+ years of going from bad to worse with no hope in sight. I remember thinking about Reagan as, "I hope we slide backwards much more slowly, like we did with Ford."
And then.......BOOM! Our people were back from Iran. Troublemaking nations started making nice. Tax rates started falling. That stuff I was learning in Econ courses -- yep, just like that! Light-hearted jokes and banter replaced the gloom'n'doom. People started to straighten up and stand tall. You saw more American flags around for a variety of reasons.....the clouds parted and you could just see America as a shining city on a hill....
Since them, I'm sorry to say, we've seen 22 years of pissing it away by degrees. 22 years of feeling the yoke over government grow heavier and heavier. 22 years of "compromise" that means capitulation, and "fairness" that handicaps achievement. It may have slid less with Billy Jeff, the Clenis, than it did with "Read My Quivering Lips" Bush, the senior....or it may have been more -- who cares? It was heading downhill. I have a great deal of respect for W's work against "enemies, foreign and domestic" -- but, on balance, it's been a holding action -- we gained ground against jihadists and lost it to statists; we gained ground against rivals and lost ground with allies. So it goes.
We now have the worst President in recent memory -- where Carter took -10 and made it -22, Obama took -4 and made it -19 in half as many years. And yet, here's the thing: we feel it more because we were accustomed to so much better. Despite the sting of political reverses, the frustration of seeing the resurrection of deservedly discredited theories, the dismay at seeing our wealth wrested from our grasp and wasted.....we're still better off than we were in 1979 -- and in 1979 we didn't know it was possible to do climb out of the rut. So far as any of us knew, we were on a long, slow, inevitable slide in 1979. While our current slide is 22 years long, and counting -- and while the last two years of nationalizations, fraud, and looting are proceeding faster than previously credible -- we know that there's nothing inevitable involved.
If this infection burns itself out in Europe, it may destroy a reservoir that has infected the world repeatedly. If the disease is stymied in DC, we may yet survive without too many disfiguring scars.....and if the disease can be quarantined in Chicago and Detroit, we may yet improve the lives of billions throughout the globe, as we have done so many times in the history of our great nation.

The problem is that social welfare model is the very thing that is inhibiting the growth of the economy.
Until Europeans and their leaders can recognize that, they are just buying a little time at extraordinary interest rates.

The fundamental difference is that Capitalists recognize that the lower bound of wealth is, and always will be, zero -- no matter how much effort is expended to raise the downtrodden, elevate the underfoot, or whatever you call it this week.....there are some people lazy, demented, disabled, disturbed, or dysfunctional enough to have nothing. The low end of the bell curve is anchored there by mathematics and the laws of nature, and the best way to improve the average is to move the upper bound higher.
Progressives of whatever stripe wish to compress the difference between haves and have-nots, rich and poor. We can all move off to a grand socialist utopia where everyone is equally rich.
There may be room for a Grand Unification Theory of Social Economics, where the shape of the curve is addressed, but otherwise the Capitalists are way, way ahead on points in the observable real world. Every redistributive system has tended toward a grand socialist utopia where everyone is equally poor, because compressing the range between high and low always converges on zero, the natural low.

Now, that was a good question.
Initially, I was tempted to say that all of the voters fucked up, because even if McCain had been elected, that jackass probably would have bent over backwards to accommodate the agendas of the Democrats in control of Congress, consistent with his history of doing so in the past..
But on second thought, and although I have always disliked McCain, I'm now inclined to suspect that we might be slightly better off if that narcissistic jackass had been elected, if only because it has become evident that Obama is a madman.

***********************************
If public money was spent bailing them out, it's pretty self-evident that they weren't part of the free market. I was intentionally hazy regarding the nomenclature, because each side tends to redefine the words used for the other side to mean whatever they please.
As an example, Fascism refers to government control of nominally private enterprises through, to make a long story short, bullying. Communism refers to government control of formerly private enterprises through outright confiscation. Socialism refers to government control of nominally private enterprises through politically-derived incentives and penalties. If you get hung up on whether a particular nudge is of one flavor or another, you can lose sight of the fact that government is controlling what was once private.

Actually Ass Draggin', that's a very astute observation on your part, although I very much doubt that you are capable of usefully extrapolating from that datum.
No, the Europeans didn't have to shoulder the immense costs of being the world's policeman. In fact the Europeans didn't even have to shoulder much of the cost of their own god damned defense after WWII.
WE DID THAT.
Partially out of a goofy sense of nobless oblige but also out of a sense of self preservation.
I mean, Jeebus!
What kind of backwards-ass, blood-thirsty, fucking continental culture can inflame most of the globe in world-wide slaughter and mayhem twice in the space of 40 years?
Do you imagine that Western Europe could have developed and kept up their welfare states if not for the lessening of budgetary burdens provided by our military support, or the industrial innovation that the U.S.A has provided?
I still remember when I first got the news that Obama had been officially elected.
I knew that we (the little people in the U.S.A) were especially and uniquely fucked.
It's not like we are Europe and get to draft on America's successes.
There is no one we can draft on.
If we are not leading, it pretty much all goes to shit for everyone else too.
And no, Ass Draggin', this is not some sort of chauvinistic, "We're #1!" sentiment.
Just cold hard facts.
Diminish America and you diminish all of the world.
Nowhere left worth going to.
If America gets "cut down to size", then every country in the world suffers.
From New Zealand to Estonia, Chile to Isreal...

Socialism has never worked in any setting it has been tried in. Even in small countries like Sweden it has failed. The problem is that it ignores basic human nature.
As Frederick Batist, said humans will always seek the easier way out. When it is easier to loot the products of others for a living rather than work, people will become looters. It is the job of the government to make looting less attractive. When the government participates in the looting the end is only a matter of time.

To date, no country has been able to do that. I suspect it will require a complete collapse of government and society followed by the rise of a supreme leader for life. Eventually he will be deposed and perhaps capitalism will rise again.
Keep in mind that the U.S. is the only country to rise with true capitalism and Constitutionally protected freedoms. This is not the normal throughout the world.
When congress and the "people" allowed the Constitution to be mangled starting really hard in the 30s we were lost.

Euro Erases Gains as Bailout Optimism Ebbs; Chinese Stocks Fall
May 11 (Bloomberg) -- The euro lost all of yesterdayÂ’s gains on concern the $1 trillion bailout will hurt European economic growth. Stocks fell, paring the MSCI World IndexÂ’s biggest advance in a year. Chinese shares entered a bear market.
The euro weakened 0.8 percent against the dollar at 10:41 a.m. in London, trading below the level it was at before the European Union-led aid package was announced early yesterday. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index fell 1.2 percent, after rising 7.2 percent yesterday. Futures on the Standard & PoorÂ’s 500 Index dropped 1 percent.

GLOBAL MARKETS: European Stocks Fall; Bailout Reassessed
LONDON (Dow Jones)--European stock markets were sharply lower Tuesday, along with the euro, as investors began to reassess the viability of the EUR750 billion euro zone rescue package.
"Yesterday's strong rally following the euro-zone bailout announcement has halted as questions marks over whether the EUR750 billion amount will be enough," said Dolmen Securities, "and while it addresses the sovereign liquidity issues, it does not help resolve the current solvency pressures facing many of the EU states."
There were also concerns over potential fiscal tightening in China, after the country's inflation data came in stronger than expected. "These figures will add fuel to the argument that China is struggling to control its inflation and will find it difficult to maintain price stability without undermining its growing economy," Dolmen said.
By 1020 GMT, the Stoxx Europe 600 index had lost 1.5% to 250.28. London's FTSE 100 index was down 1.7% at 5296.34, Frankfurt's DAX index was 1% lower at 5960.28, and Paris's CAC-40 index was down 1.8% at 3653.66.

Free school, 8 weeks vacation, free health care, retirement at 55 is doable.
But it requires most everyone playing by the rules, and utilization of increased productivity. Instead the Swedes grew tired of utopia and succumbed to religion, the "diversity" religion.
They are now robbed at will by the imported thugs, as I understand it, schools burned, riots, free speech squelched.

Again, I disagree, Vic.
Go to your local Republican Headquarters. Get them to give you their list of local, registered Independent and Democrat voters. Phone those Democrats and Independents from the phone bank there in the Republican headquarters. You're a smart, well informed, knowledgeable, savvy and persuasive guy. Put your talents to good use. Explain to those Democrats and Independents why they should vote for Republicans. Be nice to them, and be patient with them, and don't let them goad you into losing your temper with them. Phoning them will be more effective than phoning Republicans, most of whom will turn out to vote this time anyway. It works. Trust me. We didn't bother to campaign for McCain, because we dislike him. But we campaigned for our local Republican candidates, and we campaigned for Bush/Cheney twice, phoning thousands of Democrats and Independents, and it worked. In fact, many of them were pleasantly surprised to hear from us.

Snap....you ignorant twat. B+rry's crew bailed out their friends with taxpayer earners credit. period. The market was thwarted by government intervention. Now there is an artificial floor that will collapse too. Only when subjected to market clearing bidding action can the asset base begin contributing to growth. This is a house of cards...

OK, that may work but I think it would have more to do with their religion than with an economic sense.

Obamassiah preaches the virtues of redistribution, those in his church get treated better than the "infidels", and true believers are told to turn off alternative media so as not to hear impure thoughts.
This new religion is anti-constitution, its priesthood meets in the holy of holies ... the ethereal world of academia.
These clowns walked on water, but the rock just under the surface was capitalism. Now that they have ventured out toward the deep, they are sinking like stones.

"With 1 percent growth we can't finance our social model any more," he said. "We need to double ...economic growth.."
Many are skeptical that can be achieved...""
Easy to see the line of attack the socialists are queueing up: "Growth has ta' be X percent in order to finance our welfare program. Oh, gee, growth was only half of X. So SEE, it's all the fault of DOZE LAZY BIZNESSMENS!! If they hadn't been such lazy bums we'd be in GREAT financial shape!
So it would only be proper social justice to CONFISCATE their property, sell it off and use the proceeds to continue to pay six-figure salaries to thousands of government administrators. After all, WE'RE ALL SMARTER THAN YOU!!"
Just watch.

7 Socialism may collapse and drag Capitalism down with it, but Capitalism will rise from the ashes.
Socialism, not so much
Unfortunately, socialism is the worst kind of parasite, and it will remain firmly attached to the nearly dead corpse (with a p!) of capitalism. Figuring out how to dislodge the vampire of socialism and put a stake through its bloodsucking heart is the task of the 21st century.

Pretty much confirms what they were saying over at zerohedge and Mish's site yesterday. Looks like the US market basically used the "bailout" (which still hasn't been officially activated, AFAIK) to temporarily clear out the shorts and try to keep the speculators from calling the EU's bluff.
That game won't last very long--it doesn't matter how much funny money they shovel into the black hole, the insolvency issues are deep and run across the whole European continent. Greece wasn't a domino, but it is a bellwether for the rest of Europe. And anyone who thinks that it won't eventually hit us is kidding themselves.

Where is it written that just because the Socialist in Chief and his minions want to go down that path that the rest of us have to follow? It is not chiseled in stone that we must follow them to Eurosocialist utopia, is it? At some point, don't we have to wish them luck and go our own way?
just askin. This "we're screwed" stuff is getting very old. A bad political union is no different than a bad marriage or a bad business partnership. None are suicide pacts.

Obama is just the latest incarnation Louis. This country took that fork in the road back in the 1930's.

"All we need are a bunch of Huns and Vandals sacking the joint to make it complete."
Who needs those guys? They're pikers compared to Islam.
