— Open Blogger It's 2:40 am Wednesday morning here in Paris, and I'm wide awake -- not because of jet lag, but because I came down ill with a 24-hr bug on Monday night and slept most of Tuesday. The good news is that I'll get more euros when I withdraw cash from the friendly neighborhood ATM in the morning:
Investors dismissed European leaders' latest attempt to restore market calm, raising doubts about whether governments can rebuild confidence in the region's common currency amid signs that the debt crisis is creeping deeper into the Continent.
The euro fell to a 10-week low, and was below $1.30 in late New York trading. Bond markets across Europe's vulnerable fringe sank, as the "risk premium" investors demand for lending to Spain and Italy hit record highs. Standard & Poor's said after European markets closed it is considering a downgrade on Portugal's credit rating, citing economic pressures and increased risks to the government's creditworthiness.
The eurozone was, for the most part, a collectivist pipe dream fueled by grand intentions -- the classic liberal fallacy of "if we just mean well, it will all work out." Megan McArdle, a libertarian economist, suspects the euro, as a currency, may not survive. More disturbingly, McArdle -- no alarmist or ideologue -- has real concerns about what lies ahead for all of us:
Europe cannot let its banks fail, but it also can't divert public pensions to line the pockets of bankers. Yet it may well have to do one or the other. I am also expecting finance to win. Forget whether Germany has the political will to bail out the PIIGS: does either the EU, or the ECB, actually have the means to bail out all five? If Spain topples, that is what it will come to.
This is starting to throw off more echoes of the Great Depression, where you have a sequence of crises, each touched off by the ones that came before, like dominos falling into some diabolic design. Europe and America thought they'd seen the worst of things by the end of 1930, only to be knocked back down even harder by the contagion of the Creditanstalt crisis. In the US, the crisis ultimately triggered a string of bank failures worse than those sparked by the initial stock market crash, and the worst two years of the Great Depression were 1932-3.
Hey, if I can't sleep, there's no reason why you should get to. ..fritz..

that reminds me...
Wendy's has new French Fries.
They call them Natural Cut Fries with sea salt. Kinda bland, but pretty good.
Sea Salt is the new big thing, I guess.

It's awesome. Grind it up in your spice grinder with a four-peppercorn blend and Szechuan peppercorns; then throw it on your chicken with chopped garlic, and smoke it for two hours. (Mesquite all the way, baby!)
Awesome.

Money! All the rest of the social sciences don't have anything to prove them right or wrong. Economist do.
It's called money.
You can't hide. You make a projection it doesn't work, and how do you know?
Money.
So all these liberals who have paid no attention to the economies of their country are starting to learn.
It's all about MONEY. You can't hide. Your fuck ups will come back to bite your ass.

When I was in grad school, econ, my adviser during my orals asked me why is Economics different than other social sciences?
I didn't have a clue.
Money! All the rest of the social sciences don't have anything to prove them right or wrong. Economist do.
My polisci professor, the one named Weiner with the French wife who wears the Worker's Cap to school every day, tried to tell me that money is all an illusion.
So... when his theories are disagreeing with the real world, pass the real world off as the fake. Nice one.

Those other heavy metals alter the taste and the coarseness of seal salt, which is why some people prefer it over table salt, *shrugs*.
I'm not sure how much "healthier" sea salt is vs table salt.

On the plus side, 2-3% growth plus 1-4% real inflation solves a lot of debt problems. Interest payments don't compound, you owe $5, $5, $5 every year, whereas the growth plus inflation compounds over 30-XX years and makes that $5 or 5% or x% payment *significantly* lower over time.
Above-avg growth solves almost every Federal problem on it's own. [Not Medicare or SS, see benefit cuts above.]
The euro will survive for a long, long time. The only issue is if Hellas and Eire can take the fin'l pain of dropping out. I doubt it, but you never know.

Uh, not really, radioactive Iodine 131 is a product of nuclear fission and can collect in the thyroid and possibly cause thyroid cancer. Potassium iodide is taken as a precaution against Iodine 131; the thyroid gland is flooded with non-radioactive iodine and prevents the absorption of Iodine 131.

RICHMOND, Va. - A federal judge on Tuesday dismissed Liberty University's lawsuit challenging the Obama administration's new federal health care law, declaring that a provision requiring most individuals to obtain insurance is constitutional.
University law school dean Mathew Staver said in a telephone interview that he will promptly appeal the ruling to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Norman K. Moon in Lynchburg is the
second court decision upholding the law, following one in Michigan in
October.

They tried to imitate the US Government, all the countries acting as states with a common currency, etc. etc.
But they're not a melting pot and they haven't PAID for our history.
They're nothing similar to us. So why do our leftist leaders yearn for Europe?
Because Europe is the birthplace of the manor system, of control by barons and other landholders while the rests of the population served as serfs.
Funny how our post-modern President is really just another "noble."

Angela Merkel has finall said the obvious: that the bank's investors should eat it now. This is standard IMF policy when it deals with these exact problems in third world countries and would have changed this entire crisis had the investors absorbed the losses in the first place. The boards would have been forced to confront the reality of how far gone they really were, instead of continually lying about their assets and liabilities just to keep getting more infusions. This would've allowed a seperation of good assets and a wrtie down of bad assets, liquidation of bad banks and consolidation into new good banks; along with the subsequent loss to the shareholders, a loss they had earned by tolertating unnacceptable risks along with the profits they had earned from these. The Irish are a case in point: what was billed as a 2-3 billion problem has grown to over a 90 billion problem and the toxic assets are still on the books! And new every infusion of public money drives the banks' stock prices lower and the local real estate prices down even further as confidence in both of them erodes with every revelation that they are not as stable as they claimed the first, second, third, fourth, fith, sixth, and now the seventh time to get more funds! Raiding public pensions to pay for the unacceptable risks taken by banks so investors could profit is really good grounds for civil unrest and revoloution. Pension funds invested in these banks will suffer along with all the other investors, but how else can the healing begin before total collapse and The Greatest Depression?
