Evan Bayh Withdrawal Speech Thread
— Ace

Oddly, he's flanked by his family, as if this is some sort of scandal, which it's not.

I guess he really wants to sell the "spend more time with my family" storyline.

Dick Morris Crows: Dick Morris has been predicting a total GOP takeover of both houses of Congress for a couple of weeks now.

I'm not sure if he really believes this or is exaggerating his belief in this outcome in order to garner attention.

He's crowing today. Obviously the Bayh retirement doesn't hurt his prediction.

The process seems to work as follows:

a. Public anger manifests itself in the Brown victory

b. The improvement in Republican chances impels top notch, former statewide elected officials to jump into races against Democratic incumbents

c. The Democrat bows out in the face of likely defeat. Suddenly, he wants to spend more time with his family.

This process has run its course in Indiana and may shortly be manifest in Wisconsin where former Governor Tommy Thompson is considering a run against Senator Russ Feingold. It may yet play out in Arkansas where Senator Blanche Lincoln now has a top tier opponent in Congressman John Boozman. And Senator Patty Murray may hear footsteps behind her with the entry into the race of wealthy businessman Paul Akers and the possible entry of former almost-Governor Dino Rossi. Rossi lost the governorship of Washington State in a Franken-esque theft after initial counts showed him defeating Christine Gregoire by 261 votes. Now Governor Gregoire won in the recount.

In New York State, billionaire Mort Zuckerman may take on appointed Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and, if he doesn't, former Governor George Pataki might jump into the race.

When we predicted a Republican win in the Senate in 2010, some laughed. But nobody's laughing now.

Mort Zuckerman would not really be much of a win for us. He's a liberal. He has harshed on Obama of late, but still, he'd be with Obama most of the time.

Democratic Candidates Need to File At End of Week. Just over Fox.

Not a Double Post: Yes, weisenheimers, I saw the earlier news.

I was putting this up because there was specifically a press conference going on.

15 He's been governor and senator, so all he needs to do is distance himself from Washington and bide his time.

I don't think he'll pop up in the Obama administration.  Look what happened to Hillary.

My money is on running a private foundation.  I was thinking of academe (possibly Purdue) but after mulling it over I think the timing doesn't work out -- he'd be locked in for too long in that kind of gig.

I don't throw around RINO much, but Zuckerman would be a Republican in the way Bloomberg was/is/was.

I think we have a shot at one of the NY seats -- Gillibrand.  With Ford likely to attack in the primaries, the mess with Paterson and the ghost of Obama, there will be a lot of racial ugliness and a solid, likable R candidate can eke out a victory.  Also, New Yorkers might be disgusted enough to split their vote.

Schumer (D-Wall Street) is singularly unlikable (he basically looks like a vampire) but he's politically savvy and he'll win regardless.

He just kept a very small condo there for residency purposes

I have some sympathy for elected officials who do that.  Obviously if he wanted to ever see his family, they have to live in DC.  Also, unless he's got a ton of cash, it makes little economic sense to shoulder a second home in the home state.

There are worse hypocrisies than living in DC when acting as a Senator.

The real issue is whether he stayed connected to his constituency.  If he's going to live like a Lord from a rotten borough, that's an entirely different situation.

Meh, I never appreciated these kinds of "scandals".  Something like this was hung on Santorum.  These guys have to live in DC.  If they have families, it's important that the kids don't jet back and forth every few weeks anyway.

I guess this is an end-run around term limits because any 12-year Senator or rep will eventually be a resident of DC, but I'm against this line of attack.

82 There is no such thing as a conservative Democrat. As long you throw the committees over to Dem control, your vote is nullified. This is the lesson of 2009. There are 2 words in the English language that have lost their entire meaning, and I resent it, and I want them back. The first word is "liberal". There is nothing that these Dems are doing that is "liberal". They stifle liberty, and choice, and freedom, and place the unforgiving boot of the nihilist State firmly on the neck of the entire populace. They crush economies and tax us all in to penury. That is not "liberal". That is fucking tyrannical. The other word is "gay"...

Arlen should be shopping for condos in Boca Raton that can be ready for occupancy in late May.

Eighty. Years. Old.

And this old hack just can't retire, he has to get cute and switch parties so he can win another term. Wow.

Anyway, this descision makes no sense on a couple of levels: that he was winning in polls; that he decided not to run on the eve of the deadline for declaring.

Maybe he learned Obama isn't running and he wants to be part of Hillary's 11?

You can bet Hillary will be out by the end of the year to prepare for her primary challenge.

What's everyone's reading of this?  If I'm wrong, I'll deserve a tongue-lashing in the end, but I don't see any serious Democratic challenge to Barry in 2012.  A liberal challenge to the First Historical Presidentialistic Black Orator Statesman?  If we've seen anything about Dems, it's that the modern Dem doubles down on radicalism, and doubles down on unpopular votes... viz., hellcare.  Furthermore, what Dem wants to clean up Barry's mess?  What segment of the dinosaur media wants to lobby against a black man?  And not just a black man, the first black President?

I think the libtard devotion to the Church of Political Correctness is too deep and devout.  I think Barry faces only joke challenges, like Kucinich, from his own party.

What do you think?

That seat's not going red, but having to defend an open seat takes more money than having an incumbent fund their own re-election.  Ever additional seat that the Dems have to play defense on raises the chances of an upset in California, Wisconsin, Washington, etc., which will give Republicans the Senate.

115 It will be interesting to see if he 'moves' back to Indiana and buys a bigger place now that he no longer needs to be in D.C.

Family won't move.  Sons are in high school--probably the same prep school that he went to when his father was a senator (lots of politicians and their kids).  There's no high school so prestigious and networked in Indiana.

116 Within a month Bayh will be amember of Obama's cabinet. Within a year he will replace Biden.  The late call freezes any potential Ned Lamonts and allows the inner circle to pick the Dem Candidate. It also gives that candidate plenty of time to establish themselves. If Bayh had run and won first then Danials would get to pick his replacement or another special election. Neither were good  options for Dems. Obama was fully aware of this I'm sure. Reid got froze out over that crap of pulling the Jobs bill after the WH endorsed it. Reid is going down and there's no stopping that now. Obama is tacking right. Bayh is the first step.

117 Eh.  The value to even a RINO is the possibility of changing the leadership.  Yeah, Dirty Harry is likely as dead politically as he looks facially, but if he's the end of the Democrats controlling the Senate for a while, that's effing terrific as a first step.  I'd endure a RINO or two if they contributed by their mere presence toward taking the reins out of the hand of the Hate America Party.

126 Odds are Bayh runs for Governor again. Indiana only limits consecutive terms, so he can run in 2012 if he chooses (notice he said that he has always thought of himself as more of an executive anyway). Odds are he runs against Indiana's LG Skillman in 2010.

This now means ND, AR, DE, and NV are all but certain to go Republican in 2010 (yes, Arkansas too. Lincoln is universally hated in that state for being too conservative for liberals and too liberal for conservatives, and she has a top-tier opponent in Boozman. Every poll now has her down 15-20).

CO, PA, and IN all look very good now. Most polls have Bennett down 5-10 points in Colorado, with Specter down 7-10 in Penn. Indiana's a red state, and without the Bayh name gone, I don't see it going blue.

So can we win two more (I assume that in a 50-50 Senate Lieberman would jump ship, he has hinted as much)? If Pataki gets in to New York (and I can see no reason why he wouldn't, he must realize that he's not going to be the Presidential nominee in 2012), NY instantly becomes a tossup, with a possible GOP lean (Pataki is still popular and has been elected statewide before). That just leaves California. I can see that happening, too, as our candidates are moderate enough and Boxer crazy enough for us to win.

Or Paul Ryan could decide to be the hero we all know he can be and crush Feingold in Wisconsin. That would be game over.

127 FWIW ( not much, in Real Dollars ) but I've been predicting a Repub takeover of the Senate for two months or so.  Each day, in each & every way, my prediction seems less and less Rose-colored as the anti-O wave gets higher and stronger and more for-mid-a-ble.

This will be 1994 ROS (redux on steroids).  More than 1994:  more in the area of 1896 as a 'realigning election'-- with one caveat:  The new Repub majority in both Houses needs to NOT screw it up and spend like Drunken Democrats.

Less than nine months and counting................

"After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so by serving in Congress has waned."

That explanation may have  been surprisingly candid and accurate. Back when making laws was only as repugnant as making sausage, he could stand it. But the process became something much worse as the democrat leadership tried to pass Obamacare. Some of the more principled Democrats are leaving rather than go through that process again.

136 Barbara Mikulski has shitty taste in furniture. Don't ask me how I know; just trust me. She buys "pickled maple," which is basically taking perfectly fine maple and bleaching it with a wash that makes it shit-Seventies-furniture white. Her whole house is done in the stuff. I knew guys who built her case goods at a wood shop in Virginia. She was a senator at the time. I remember thinking, "well, furnishing your home like a fucking trailer park is no disqualification for office in the U.S. Senate." She's a worthless battleaxe. She also has no taste, which could easily be said for the entire rectal state she represents. I don't wish anyone poor health, but the sooner she retires, the sooner she'll be replaced by another...well, another cocksucking Marylander who doesn't know how to vote or drive smart in heavy traffic.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama suffered another setback Monday as a fifth Democratic senator, centrist heavyweight Evan Bayh, decided not to run for re-election in dismay at the bitter political climate.

Obama, who reportedly tried to talk Bayh out of retiring, faces a looming Republican resurgence and risks watching strong majorities in Congress crumble in November mid-term elections, and with them his ambitious reform agenda.
