— Open Blogger A tipster (eh, who am I kidding, it was a regular blogger who will remain anonymous) passed on these little nuggets to ponder today.
1. In response to the Ghailani trial failure, the White House has inexplicably ordered the Office of Military Commissions to stand down. Note the WH non-denial.
2. The Somali pirates that the Navy brought back were convicted on Wednesday in Norfolk. It's the first U.S. piracy convictions in almost two centuries.
3. A wanted, known jihadist lives openly and freely in Kosovo. Note that Kosovo is still protected by U.S. troops.
4. Creeping statism: a judge is allowing the wiretap authority created to aid investigators of terrorism to be used now for financial fraud investigations. Civil rights? What civil rights?

Well, except for the Somali pirates article. Unless, that is, the Mohammedan Mouthpiece issues a pardon.

Wait, Obama didn't end national security wiretapping?!? And is expanding it?!? I AM SHOCKED!

You know CDR M, it never ceases to amaze me how phony liberals are. We got the girl next door at the U.S. Air Terminal being pap smeared by a woman in the TSA, and prostrate exams being done on gentlemen by a TSA guy named Ralph at the United Airlines Terminal while the government ramps up surveilance, tries terrorists in U.S. District Court and on an on.
And of course Huffington Post where are they? Bristol Palin booted from DWTS.
Rome West is burning and the libs are silent.

So how many millions of dollars did we waste trying them, and how many millions more in the coming years, instead of just hanging them from something akin to a yardarm?

Sarah is talking up her run on Sean Hannity.
If I was running a candidate against Palin, I'd be stocking up on videos of her Hannity appearances to put her right out of the race. Embarrassing, is what they are. She babbles, in response to adoring softballs.
Can't wait 'til he asks her if she'll accept a VP slot with The Newt.

As I recall it that is ass backwards. My memory is that the PATRIOT act allowed tools such as wiretaps etc. that were already in use in criminal investigations to be used for national security investigations, such as surveillance of suspected terrorists, and lowered "the Wall" that Ashcroft talked about at the 9/11 Commission.

On the lefty forums I've trolled, their general view on the TSA-gropathons is, "it is your patriotic duty comrade. Now turn your head and cough."

No, thanks. I've had enough of Palin and Fucks News for quite a while to come. She's been on every show they run, it seems, and the level of fawning and groveling over her reached unbearable levels.
And I thought they were toadying whiners when they were pimpin' Juan "the victim" Williams after he got broomed by NPR. They've outdone themselves with all the Palin-worship.

If I was running a candidate against Palin
And yet, as smart as you are, oddly enough, you're not. And, as hard as it is to believe, you won't be, even if she runs. And, as unfathomable as it is, you won't even be invited to do so, even if she won the nomination. Even if you offered your services free of charge.
But that's just because you're way too smart and everyone else is dumber than you.
It's odd how much less people view your skills than you do. One of life's great mysteries.

2. Auburn is going to win the national title game, and Cam Newton will win the Heisman Trophy. They will both be stripped of these accolades after Newton jumps to the NFL, because he played for pay at Auburn and cheated on exams at Florida. Anyone else would have been kicked out of the major college circuit for that kind of cheating, and either Newton and/or his dad might wind up going to prison over the payoff. The Bush folks were sharp legally; the Newtons are simple people about to be caught by surprise by the firestorm that flares up after Newton's time at Auburn is investigated.
3. Oregon is overrated.
4. LSU is seriously overrated.
5. We badly need a better system than the BCS.

--Oh yawn.
The clowns from the legacy conferences perpetuate a self-fulfilling prophecy by not allowing their best to go against the best of the non-AQ's. Have any "powers" from the SEC or Big 10 dared schedule BSU or TCU? You know, since they're so weak and all, it should be an easy win, right?
At least since TCU and BSU played each other last year, they can't wriggle out by having that match-up again.
Posted by: logprof at November 26, 2010 05:46 PM (BP6Z1)
36 1. Neither TCU nor Boise State deserve to play in the national title game. If either of them played in real conference (SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, etc.), they wouldn't be undefeated, and likely wouldn't even be considered for the title game.
So which team do you like that you feel is getting the shaft because after years of schools like BSU and TCU being screwed out of consideration have they finally beaten the system so now your team is going to get screwed.
You know what would be a great thing to help destroy the BCS? If either of those schools get to play in the national championship and win it, and the other of them plays in a BCS bowl and beats their opponent too.
Posted by: buzzion at November 26, 2010 05:52 PM (oVQFe)
Not my point. I have no doubt TCU & Boise would roll some of the legacy conferences' best. They just wouldn't roll them all. The SEC West has five teams (out of six) ranked in the top 20. Neither of these pretenders would run a real conference; they've barely run their own.

--Yeah, there is a bit of disconnect there, right? Wants the sme-old, same-old in the championship game, but hates the BCS and wants it to go away.
Posted by: logprof at November 26, 2010 05:55 PM (BP6Z1)
I'm an LSU guy. We're not getting screwed; we're incredibly lucky to be where we are.
As mentioned above, I think Auburn is the best team in the country and will win it all. Cam Newton is the best player and will win the Heisman. If Oregon is going to beat them, they'll need to step up their game.
My BCS comments are just calling it like it is. TCU and Boise are fun to watch, but they've barely beaten some really suspect teams in their own conference. They're poster children for the notion that the best way to finish high in the polls is to start there. There's no way either of them would have run the table in a real conference.

Yeah like I said, he's probably looking at the BCS games and is all butthurt that his team may not get to play and TCU and Boise probably will. And I say this as an Ohio State fan.

Just like every other school out there every year. Most good teams will always have that trap game where they are upset by a team they should have crushed or just barely win. And yeah just like other teams in the past they are benefitting by starting high in the polls, and the reason they've started high in the polls is because for most of the past decade they've been winning and going undefeated and suffering because of their starting place in the polls.
And like I said one of the best ways to move along the destruction of the BCS is to have one of them win the NC game, and have the other win a BCS game.

Given today's events (AU over Bama and Oregon beating Arizona), it looks like a conventional wisdom title game - Auburn vs. Oregon, SEC v. Pac 10 (I'm assuming there's less about a 1% chance South Carolina will beat Auburn in the SEC title game).
Playoff.

Why do we need a playoff? Clearly we got it right again with Oregon v. Auburn in the title game. The 2 best teams are playing. The system works and we don't need to change it.
Posted by: BCS Responding to your complaints at November 26, 2010 06:21 PM (oVQFe)
The other teams in my playoff would be Oregon, TCU, Boise, LSU, Ohio State and Stanford.
Posted by: Thinking things over at November 26, 2010 06:50 PM (agSql)
You know, Obama could actually do something about the BCS.
Just refuse to invite any BCS team to the White House and invite the FCS champion instead until they hold a playoff.
The FCS can manage an 11-game season plus a 20-team playoff bracket.

Did anyone actually read the article? It does not give blanket authority for wiretaps in financial fraud cases, it gives specific authority for insider trading cases. That distinction may be lost on many, but the reality is that most financial frauds (which covers a wide swath of crimes, from tax evasion and money laundering, to mortgage fraud) are historical cases, meaning there is an existing paper trail, and no need for a wire tap.
Insider trading is one of the most difficult types of frauds to prove, due to the need to prove that specific "insider" knowledge was intentionally communicated to the conspirators. Considering the enormous damage done to the economy as a whole from some of the recent insider cases, not to mention some billion dollar ponzi schemes, wiretaps may be an important tool to investigators (one that is closely monitored at multiple layers, including federal judges).
