— Ace Just got back from The Other Guys.
The end credits are Michael Moore-ish in amassing statistics that make capitalism look bad, but mostly they're about... TARP and its beneficiaries, especially Goldman Sachs. Which I notice are none too popular with conservatives either.
So I'm going to call this attempted liberal messaging, which mostly kinda failed, because a lot of populist minded conservatives will find the overall thrust of it agreeable. Even if it is, ultimately, intended as an indictment of capitalism, conservatism, and Bush.
So, putting aside that warning about bias:
One of the funniest movies in a long, long time. Like, the funniest movie since MacGruber six months ago. No, but really, it's funny. (So was MacGruber, in fact.)
It's a Will Ferrell movie, so as always if you don't like him (as many don't), this isn't for you. If you do, though-- hysterical.
And Mark Wahlberg's funny too, as a perpetually-angry thick-witted thug. Quite a stretch for him.

If I'd ever direct a film with Mark Wahlberg, there would have to be a scene where Wahlberg and another character are listening to Marky-Mark and the Funky Brunch and Wahlberg would be forced defend that band from the other character's harsh critique.

Honestly though ace, how many movies are made anymore that are openly biased like that?
If we quit watching them on that score we would all quit watching movies period.
Its when they get to the Michael Moore level of teh stupid that we have to throw up the hands. The entire purpose of the movie is commie propaganda.
You can get that for free just by turning on NBC.

I have mixed feelings about Wahlberg. Uneven actor, although he sometimes hits it out of the park (Boogie Nights, The Departed), and when he does, it's great stuff.
But every time I see him on screen with a gun in his hand, it pisses me off. Because he's a fucking FELON. In possession of a firearm, which is piling up felonies on felonies......if it were some regular no-name schmuck, of course.
Posted by: IllTemperedCur at August 07, 2010 03:16 PM (P9+0W)
In general, almost all of Will Ferrell's are funny in concept. The problem is they don't get fleshed out and the main idea behind it gets old pretty quickly into the movie.
The guy was hilarious on Saturday Night Live, but he didn't have to carry it for the full show and he had writers backing him up. He's been the same character over and over again for years, which would still be okay if he had the writing to support it, but it's clearly not there.

You gotta respect Will Ferrell and Michael Moore for following through on their anti-capitalist stance and living lives of total collectivist frugality. Remember when Michael Moore announced that he was giving his entire fortune to charity? Remember when Will Ferrell sold his mansions and cars, moved into a one-room apartment, and started riding everywhere in a donkey cart?
These are the finest men who ever breathed.

That's me. mainly it used to be because I could smoke at home while I watched but I quit smoking and I still don't go to the actual theater.
I have a 53" plasma and a set of Infinity 18" studio monitors and a pair of 8" Panasonic speakers in the rear.
That is good enough for me. I can pause the movie any time I want to go get another beer or go get rid of one down the hall.
I can do all that while renting the blu-ray for 5 bucks. only thing I give up is waiting 6 months for the disk to come out.

Best deal around here is one of the old fashion drive ins. $8 per adult (kids under 13 - free). 2 movies a night. Bring your own stuff in. Usually showing new releases (last weekend we saw Despicable Me and Grown Ups).
16 bucks for 4 of us for 2 movies. Or its 24 for 5 for 2 movies if the oldest is not working or doing something on her own.
Posted by: Mallamutt at August 07, 2010 07:28 PM (OWjjx)
They put in a new drivein in Lubbock about five years ago. Micro FM transmitter so you can listen through your car stereo. $6 for the two movies, you can bring your own, or the food there is actually affordable. Some people bring recliners in the pickup bed and grills. Best part? A local kid, maybe 25 yo, new Tech graduate had the idea, it's been a rousing success.

Vic,
blu-ray costs $2 bucks more per month on Netflix now.. the delivery and return times on these suckas are phenomenal.. check it out.. So for $12/month you get as many movies as you can watch (blu-ray or DVD) with the pipeline time..and in addition as many movies that you want from their instant streaming list, which is growing every day.
My blu-ray player has netflix streaming support.. but you can use a computer, or a Wii or PS3..

I've been pretty faithful in my determination to make certain that I am in no way funding either the wallets or the soapboxes of those with whom I cannot (will not) agree. Farrell, unfortunately, is rapidly approaching that threshold.
Long ago added to the pile are Michael Moore, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Larry David. Others are right on the verge. You no longer have to be a Nielson family to contribute to the ratings, and ratings are that industry's equivalent of votes.
Now, having said that, I have to admit that my principles are a bit tattered as I've yet to kick the Alec Baldwin habit.
Damn you, Alec, and your damnable talent!

Will Ferrell's humor appeals to that part of us that is still an obnoxious teenager. He makes me laugh. Sometimes.
My kids (obnoxious teenagers) both like him, but my oldest was sorta 'meh' about "The Other Guys" (they went to the matinee yesterday).
Ferrell is funny and over the top in most things he does, but it is pretty much the same thing, over and over. He was funny in "Blades of Glory", just because it ridiculed figure skating and the Olympics (which is filled with pretentious boobs). And it had Craig Nelson (who appears to be coming over to the Right as he gets older).
The ending sounds like "Fun with Dick and Jane". the more recent Jim Carrey version. That ripped on corporate takeovers, etc. Had a lot of that crap in the credits.

Yeah, but see I want to join one of the cool gangs. I mean, let's face it. A lot of the gangs in The Warriors were pretty gay. Sure, you're armed, so who gives a shit--but if I'm free to express myself, I'm not going to go around wearing no shirt and leather accessories much less a Yankees uniform.
If I'm going to wear something slightly eccentric in a post-apocalyptic gang-controlled city, it's going to be a full suit of armor (or at least a steel breastplate) with a black cape and a machine gun. Plus I want a flame thrower. Sure, everybody will hate me, but who will fuck with a guy with a flame thrower?
The world is mine.
Or China's.
Which I'm sure would lead to a libertarian paradise.

Every interview I've seen with McKay shows that McKay can barely contain his leftist rage. He'd do something funny and clever and then immediately follow it up by wishing some right-winger gets cancer and dies, ha ha. He seems like an amazingly angry, unhappy guy -- but maybe I just saw him (several times) at some personal low-point. That or he just can't resist using what camera time he gets to ram his politics down your throat.

Speaking of shitty movies...down at the Piggly Wiggly they have a machine where you can rent a movie for a buck. After a day of sweating my sack off doing yardwork, I went down and got the light-hearted, guy bonding comedy flick called Hot Tub Time Machine.
I had to stop after about 30 minutes because it was so brain-bleedingly bad. When I took it back, I kicked the machine for letting me waste $1.06 (with tax) on that piece of shit

What if, other people not being able to take care of themselves, I take money from them in order to do that for them?
Or, since I'm a man of principle, what if other people do that, get rich, and then hire fighters to mess with me?
Then I'll have to band together with a bunch of other people to fend them off.
But we'll all have to pay for it somehow.
So, essentially we'll group into our own organizations, one competing against the other to either mess with them or keep from being messed with.
Eventually these groupings could encompass thousands or millions of people.
Admit it, I see this a big problem.
Posted by: AD at August 07, 2010 04:57 PM (NALrv)
Right like you can fend off an entire invasion by yourself. Bullshit. I ask again, why is it that when you do want to cut spending, as rare as that sentiment is, why do you immediately jump to the idea of cutting the military? Aren't there approximately 29,437,023 other government programs that might also be considered for cutting?
