I've had one since college. I am debating whether or not to delete it. I am told they are selling personal information. And it is becoming a haven for identity theft.  I've gotten maybe 20 friend request from people who clearly aren't actually the person they claim to be. They are just fishing for information. I mean where else can you get someones address and birthdate so easily?

The only reason i still have my account is because i put up photos of my dog for my sister to see.

Democrats are in control, so shouldn't they be the ones to select certain government cuts?  Or are Democrats just hype and bullshit? (and false promises)

YouCut The Federal Budget.

Your choices?

Eliminate the Presidential Election Fund, a federal program that provides matching funds to political candidates during Presidential primaries, certain third-party candidates, and funds for political conventions. In the 2008 Presidential election the candidates raised over $1.3 billion from individuals and PACs; do they really need to supplement that with taxpayer money?Prohibiting taxpayer-subsidized union activities by prohibiting federal employees from being paid by the government for performing union functions.  Currently some federal employees spend up to 100% of their workweek, paid by taxpayers, doing work for their union. Federal employees unions collect millions in revenue each year and spend significant amounts on political activities and lobbying; should they also be subsidized by the taxpayer for their official functions?

"...she's always getting "friended" by people she doesn't even like. "

What's with that??

I've had probably 6 people whom I've considered total douchebags and who I'm fairly sure were aware of my feelings toward them try to friend me on there.  Time never seems to cure douchebaggery in my experience.

It's sort of like people who want to go to their 5 year high school reunion.  Why?  Most of those people still got on my nerves at that point.

South Park dealt with Facebook in the episode "You have zero friends" quite well with a nice homage to the movie Tron.

Anyway, I have to say that I've mixed feelings about it.  It's helped me locate and chat with people I haven't seen in 15 years.  However it can also divert time away from more worthwhile activities, and can seriously compromise your privacy.  (I won't even get into the whole issue of drinking and Facebooking)

I think Facebook's problems are the internet's problems.  It draws time and the attention of society away from natural and real human interaction.

I've refused to get one either. However, my decision was easy because although I get emails etc begging me to get on or "link in", I don't really like anyone very much and I have ZERO interest in keeping up with their random postings. There are thousands of people that would find me and bother me and my goal everyday is not to be bothered. My husband, children, mother, and sister bother me enough.

36 I have a love/hate with FB.  It started out pretty dorky to me, even though I had been "found" by high school friends from 30 years ago.  That was pretty cool.  Several family members are now on & it's nice to see pics of everyone, etc.  I hate the stupid "what I'm eating for breakfast" status updates, however.  But the one reason I do log on is because it has enabled me to get connected with a LOT of like-minded political "friends," including several conservative politicians and radio hosts.  Many are very prolific posters and are almost like mini blogs in and of themselves.  It's probably 80% of what I do on FB.  I don't put personal info on mine.

My family is now joining facebook. Sigh.

That's just waaaay too much together time for me.

I have an Aunt that talks to my Mom about six times a day. I don't need her sharing every detail of my life. (Then again, I don't need to be sharing every detail of my life--which I don't). But every now and again someone will put something on my wall that I just don't need family members knowing about.

I've really stripped it down to people I talk to and/or like.

Posted by: laceyunderalls at May 13, 2010 06:36 AM (pLTLS)

44 There are thousands of people that would find me and bother me and my goal everyday is not to be bothered.

Eh.  The only people who ever post or comment on mine, now that I purged the evangelical Obamatrons, are the people who managed to stay in touch before, and the occasional conservative blogger or AoS moron.  The rest just wanted to verify that I'm still a complete failure at life, then snickered and moved on.

OTOH, yesterday the daughter of one of my parents' friends from college found me and asked me to please relay her contact info because she had to talk to them about her mom, who is in hospice.  That's kinda cool...my mother was all "Oh, I was just thinking about her!"

Most of my FB friends actually came from joining the AoSHQ group from last year.  And as noted above, there are a lot of conservative causes going in there.

Just don't use your real name or put address/personal info in there.  If you have put it in there and can't delete the account, you can at least change your name to an alias and change your address to a dummy...that would be just as good.  Of course, it'll make you hard to find by your high school buddies but that's a feature, not a bug

46 See!  See!  I was right to loathe Facebook and I'm not just an enormous bitch old crank.

My big problem with Facebook is the "privacy" issues.  Yes, the scare quotes are there for a reason.  People think that their Facebooks are far more private than they really are.  Then there's the fact that Facebook keeps changing the default privacy settings without clear explanation and yeah.  I know someone who had a stalker hunt him down through Facebook because he was careful not to put up private stuff but his family members weren't.  So, yeah, not a fan.

In conclusion, see re:  lawn, the getting off of.

The original poster just said something about sending pictures to 1 person.  I don't see why photos 1 or 2 people want to share need to be posted all over teh internets.  But that's just me.

I read something interesting last night in a history text book. Until 1964, most states had congressional districts divided by land not by population. The rural districts therefore were over represented in congress. The supreme court made them redistrict to one-man-one-vote or by populations. The congressional districts then became more urban.

This may have been the beginning of the end.

I think you mean Reynolds v. Sims, which made state legislatures entirely by population mob rule and took away the power of counties in a State Senate legislature.

I think US House districts have always been population based and US Senate districts always have been two each, although they were appointed by state legislatures until 1913 (seventeenth amendment). Frankly, I'd like to go back to Senators chosen by state legislature.

It's got a very different voice than a guitar -- different dynamics, different attack/decay. Too many people assume than banjo = bluegrass, and nothing could be further from the truth. I play mostly old-time and folk stuff (clawhammer style) but I've seen guys do everything from jazz to punk to classical on a banjo. In fact, Norman Blake does a gorgeous classical piece called "Rag Baby Jig" on a cello banjo on his album Far Away, Down On A Georgia Farm that sounds for all the world like something Pachelbel would have done. A gorgeous piece of music.

O/T but thought it was good:

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesnÂ’t buy one.

If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesnÂ’t eat meat.

If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.

If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.

A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.

Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.

A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

(Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.

A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.

A liberal will delete it because he's "offended".

168 If you seek an unbiased opinion of Facebook, simply ask Meggy McCain about posting a self portrait and then reading numerous responses about her fat ass.  If  the truth hurts, don't post fat photos, drunk pics, or that adorable snapshot of Lena and Squiggy lying in bed covering their junk with Mickey Mouse hand towels.

169 The "privacy settings" are designed to make you give up before you complete them all.  I think it took me a good 45 minutes to mark everything private and even then, they have one setting that can only be changed to "friends of friends," meaning that if someone is a friend of my cousin, they can find me.  Not happy about that.

It would be nice to have one setting selection: Public, Private, Friends Only.

180 Reveler dies at giant cocktail party in France Published: 5/13/10, 12:05 PM EDT

PARIS (AP) - Police say a reveler has died in an accident at a giant cocktail party in the French city of Nantes that drew 9,500 people after it was organized on Facebook.

There is a trend of raucous, enormous cocktail parties in France. Another one in Montpellier in southern France Thursday drew 10,000.

The Nantes prosecutor's office said a 23-year-old man died Thursday after falling six meters (18 feet) while trying to slide down a railing at a bridge.

Nantes' regional prefect Jean Daubigny told 1Tele TV that 57 revelers were hospitalized after drinking too much.

Paris police posted their own Facebook note, warning that a planned May 23 giant cocktail party near the Eiffel Tower is illegal, as is drinking alcohol there.

183 I was a pretty early adopter, quite a bit before they let non student in, which made facebook a slightly better looking myspace.

I never gave them my accurate birthdate, or other helpful info like that.

Just come up with a day that is kinda close to your real birthday, and use that.  Don't put anything on there that would facilitate identity theft.  And don't friend anyone you don't know.  If someone tries to friend you and their profile is so vague that you aren't sure it's your real friend, message them and make sure.

This is common sense shit.  If you can't handle facebook, I'm afraid you're probably going to be fucked at your next myfacester.com profile destination too.  I guess I also don't act like a douchebag when drinking or having a good time, so there aren't any incriminating photos either.  Just nice family photos, pics of my dog.

I tell facebook to keep it private with 100% awareness that they really won't.  That assumption should follow you to gmail, blogs, etc.

This makes a lot more sense than just deleting your profile.  That information you have, contact with many old friends and family you might not speak to much, is incredibly valuable to you, and maybe slightly valuable to others.  Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, just remove anything you don't want public, try to keep it private anyway, and keep your contact with your friends.

189 And his protege, the best guitar picker who ever lived Chet is great, but Doc Watson is the best picker who ever lived. Bar none, full stop. Chet was probably the better overall guitar player because he played so many different kinds of styles -- Jazz, country, swing, what have you -- but no one has tone and dynamics like Doc. Listen to Chet do Loudermilk's "Windy and Warm" and then listen to Doc's version of it and see if you don't agree. Norman Blake is another superb acoustic instrumentalist -- he can play about anything with strings on it, but his guitar work is absolutely wonderful. And he's a member of the "crooked but correct" school of singing to which I myself belong! Norman has also written some of the best country songs in the last half-century ("Green Light On the Southern" and "Billy Gray" are two of my favorites, but there are lots of others).

190 Another famous picker Vic, You should pick up the DVD set of the Johnny Cash Show if you haven't already. Mother Maybelle is featured prominently on that set*, and she's a treasure. (She does the version of "Wildwood Flower" that I learned from and still like the best, though I play with a pick.) *As is Norman Blake in the studio band!

197 I believe the FB founder was also caught stealing passwords his enemies and friends used on their facebook accounts and using that to break into their accounts off facebook.  That 'give me your gmail password and I'll find more of your friends' thing?  Apparently I shouldn't have done that.

Really, a tremendous douche.  Facebook was pretty good and could have been a persistent and successful thing, but now it's imploding.  It's trivial to replace when you think about it.  But if they hadn't gotten greedy, they would have had a very easy job raking in a fortune.  It's never enough?

200 nickless, that's got to be a pretty universal experience.

I guess I was smarter than I give myself credit for.  A lot of the ladies I was interested in checking up on had done as well as I thought they would.  The ones I didn't like were miserable weirdos, and the ones I did like more were happy with nice families.

And none of them really compare well against my old lady.  I married young, and it's amazing to me that I picked such a worthy mate when I was a pretty dumb kid.  FB has really helped show me just how many bullets I dodged.

201 138  No discussion of bajos is complete without mentioning Bela Fleck. Saw him live out at Disney a few years back with the Flecktones. I really went to see Vic Wooten, but they were great.

He pulls out an E-Bow and cracked a joke about banjo players who have problems with sustain.

I was the only one in the audience who laughed.

Bela Fleck & the Flecktones have a Christmas album, Jingle All The Way, which includes "Jingle Bells" as sung by Tuvan Throat Singers.  The words are unintelligible, and the singing itself is like cicadas.  Truly some strange stuff, but great for jazzing up a boring holiday party.

202 Are Flickr accts password protected?  What's to keep computer literate hobos from looking at your photos & stalking you?

FlickR is a division of Yahoo which I suspect has all the same privacy invasion as Facebook. And yes, you need a password to look at some pictures and to post.

204 I found some old Army buddies on there, but shortly after, they disappeared back into the woodwork.  As for friends, we communicate in person, by phone and by instant message more often than not, so FB became superfluous.  Deleted it some time ago.

Also eliminated the urge to go peeking on my cheating ex-wife.  Better to just not even exist on social networking sites with one of those in your past.

Posted by: Schlippy at May 13, 2010 10:08 AM (xm1A1)

205 Schlippy, I found a ton of old army buddies on there.  Many long out of the service and asking me to join their freaking game mafia.  LAME, but really nice to see their kids and wives and lives are pretty great.  We all faced a few losses and it's just nice to check in on them.

Even if I almost never take advantage of my ability to contact them, in some way, I am in touch with them.  It's lame that FB decided not to be satisfied with that, but the founder is a colossal POS.

This girl I knew back in high school was eager to put me on her friends list saying she said she wanted to re-connect with old friends.

My reply: "We were never friends. We were just two high school students who were in the marching band at the same time a quarter of a century ago. We never even spoken a single word to each other during those four years. We had zero interest in each other back then so why should we be interested now that we're 25 years older and 1,000 miles away from each other?"

I only have 18 people on my Friends List. Half of them are kinfolk and the other half people who I actually meet in real life on a regular basis.

208 I only have ten friends. Four ex-co-workers, one ex-boss, one former classmate from my school years, two longtime acquaintances who moved south some time ago, and two people who are related to someone I know that doesn't have a Facebook account. And that's it.

Any friend requests that show up from someone I don't know get disposed of, no questions asked.

Well...what can one say to that but "Bet you're a blast at parties."  Maybe the "ignore" button'd work better for you next time.  Heh.

That said, only have about 40 "friends," all actual people in my life day to day whom I like.  As w/ others above, any "friend requests" from people I don't know (more often) or who are assholes (there are a few in my life) just get ignored.

Some people think that if they have 500 "friends" on their page that proves they are popular or well liked or something.   All it means is one of two things: they spend too much time on FB instead of with their REAL friends, OR that they're annoying, overtenacious jerks likely just using you to put one more notch on their "friends" belt so they can say at work, "I have 500 FB friends!".
