— DrewM Well, it will give the MFM something other than Richard "I was in the shit" Blumenthal to talk about today.
Eight-term Indiana Rep. Mark Souder was announcing his resignation Tuesday after admitting to an affair with a female aide who worked in his district office.Souder, a Republican, will will step down on Friday. He said in remarks obtained by Fox News that he "sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff."
"I wish I could have been a better example," he was to say. "In this poisonous environment of Washington, D.C., any personal failing is seized upon, often twisted, for political gain. I am resigning rather than to put my family through that painful, drawn-out process. ... We are a committed family but the error is mine and I should bear the responsibility. Not only am I thankful for a loving family but for a loving God."
Expect Souder to become the poster boy for the Republican Party in the media. You know, the same media who dropped Eric 'the tickler' Massa down the memory hole as soon as possible.
Update: It's about TEH Hypocrisy!!!11!111!!!
Souder was apparently a longtime advocate for abstinence education. TPM Muckraker even found him and the staffer he is alleged to have the affair with talking about his feelings on the issue as some sort of campaign or issue oriented video.
Jake Tapper, who will hold Obama to task but is still a member in good standing of the MFM jumped on it as well.
This seems to prove...er, I'm not sure what. I get that liberals love to bash Republicans caught up in personal scandals but how the hell does this have anything to do with the value of abstinence education?
There are a lot of things that adults do that they teach kids not to, not always because the thing itself is bad but because kids are not able to handle them (either emotionally, physically or what have you).
I know this can be shocking to liberals but kids are not simply miniature adults. Just because an adult engages in a certain behavior doesn't meant they forfeit their right and responsibility to counsel children not to do those same things.
That said, this video is painful on many levels.
Quick question for the ladies....um, is abstinence education a topic I'm overlooking when it comes to landing a woman? Seriously, I hadn't considered it before but it seems to have worked for this guy.

Interesting timing.
So does this mean that they will have to spend a lot of money now to have a special election in about three months, just in time for the winner to be sworn in for the late summer / fall election recess, only to have to have another election three months after that?

It was always my understanding that one sentence doesn't make a paragraph. Should be at least two.
We got into a debate about this yesterday at work and after much arguing I looked it up. Apparently, there is no requirement that a paragraph be two sentences in modern usage. Further proof that the world needs to get off my lawn.

Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of Souder's affair with the staffer would have landed him before the House Ethics Committee. Sources told Fox News that the aide, identified as Tracy Jackson, a woman in her mid-40s, would accompany the congressman to events and to record ads at a Christian radio broadcast station.
He most likely didn't break any law - the House Ethics Committee would have probably just slapped him on the wrist. He's resigning because he violated his "family values" pledge and thinks that cost him any chance of re-election.
I believe in family values, but I also know what a cess-pool politics is. None escape unscathed. It gets tiring seeing people with their heads not completely up their backsides resign over things that a Dem would just skate on.

It just bemuses me in this supposedly sexually-liberated age that people still freak out so badly about sexual affairs. Is he an asshole for doing it? Indubitably. But I find the outrage over it, as I said before, rather overwrought.
It's just about the only sexual taboo left, cheating. Probably because the pathos of the betrayed spouse plays so well.
Still, maybe we oughta maybe spot each pol one ignored affair. Hearing about this doesn't really help anything.

There are corrupt cops. It is a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless. Does that fact nullify the laws against murder, rape, robbery, theft and jaywalking?
NO!
Things (like childhood abstinence and the civil law) have intrinsic value that transcends the behavior of the people who may be involved with them. The failure of the messenger does not in any way impact the validity of the message.
What is so freaking hard to understand about that?

He broke rule 1 when he he dorked a 40-something staffer instead of a 20-something stripper; and he broke rule 2 when he got caught.

Can't an alcoholic tell kids that getting hammered is bad and will lead to misery. Okay, he's immoral. Why does that make the policy positions wrong?
I know, just the other day, I was telling my son not to put a bullet in that wounded cop he was standing over and he was like, "But Dad, Mumia abu Jamal did it."
I really didn't have any response to that, so he iced that pig, but good.

Conspiracy theory: I wonder if the NYT or other MFM have stories like this "stored" for a Dem rainy day. So, Dick Blumenthal is suddenly embarrassed by lying about Vietnam. NYT reporter goes to be a big file called "Possible Republican Deflection Stories," digs out what he knows about Souder and gives him a call. "We're going to run this story unless you resign." Bingo, the heat (if any) is now off Blumenthal and he carries on as usual.

I do not think it prevents him from serving. I didnt think it prevented Bill from serving either. I dont even think it prevents them from serving if they lie about an affair, most people do lie about their affairs.
I just think we should focus on their VOTES and their positions on policy not in bed\
I have a bigger problem with Blumenthal. My dad God Bless, was a Vietnam vet, Marine, two tours. If Blumenthal didnt go fine, say that, Dont glom onto the actual vets.
Hillary saw more action doing a corkscrew landing in a war zone than Blumenthal did. And it was wrong for HRC to 'misstate' what went on there also. In that case frankly I think she reemembered it as frightening and serious, I am sure the military laid down the danger for her and she really remembered it as dangerous. I know I know, Hill is the last of my vestiges of Democratness and I cling to her, bitterly.
Anyway Blumenthal should go, Hill paid the price, the country didnt care what Bill did and we made that clear in the elections after the impeaching. But I still dont think it precludes someone from serving for cheating with a staffer.
Take a letter Maria.

If President Obama, who is against gay marriage, who is always nagging fathers to be responsible, who uses his marriage as a political tool, if he is found to be having an affair or that he did have an affair, is he a hypocrite? Will that be news?

"I'm far from a prude but my feeling about politicians and cheating is that if they can do that to their wives who supposedly they once loved, they would have no problem lying and cheating about other things."
Two schools of thought, here. I get the first school of thought but have to go with the second.
(1) You volunteered to be a politician and "represent" and "lead" us. In fact you campaigned for it, and in all probability told us you were more ethical than the other guy. I'm sick of nobody being held accountable, particularly politicos who have NO hesitation at telling other people how they should live their lives and passing laws to compel people to live the way a political party feels they should.
(2) Years ago, you swore before God, in front of your family, your wife to be, her family, and all your friends, to cherish her, be loyal, all that good stuff. Yeah, I know no one is perfect and stuff happens. But this same guy swore a few months ago in front of a lot of the same people to be honest, uphold the law, do the right thing, etc., etc. when he was elected to represent US. Trust him? Just sayin'.
(3) While Bill Clinton was playing whatever in the Oval Office, there were enemies of this country out there that would do ANYTHING to get their hands on compromising information about him that could give them leverage or an edge. Leaks do happen. The issues he deals with aren't trivial and are about more than money. They are about national security, soldiers' lives, on and on. Trust him to do the right thing if the stuff hit the fan and someone out there was pressuring him? Surrre, just look at his track record.
(4) They know what the consequences will be if they get caught and that the consequences will be far worse than they would be for the average guy or gal who gets caught. They also know that in today's world there is a good likelihood they will get caught, and that if they do, they DO have enemies who will bring them down. Stupid? Too stupid to make decisions that directly impact our lives?
(5) He's just a congressman, and I understand there aren't as many implications as when a President cheats. But where do we draw the line? Is cheating OK for this guy who I have never heard of and could be on the committee for emptying ashtrays in staff offices for all I know? Is it OK for a Senator who is a head of a powerful committee? For Al Gore? For Clinton? Maybe if you want to be a politician and aspire to be our representative and lawmaker, you need to think this out a little and decide that maybe, just maybe, you need to stop being a dealmaker and keep it in your pants for the time period you are in that level of public service. After that, I guess it's between you and your family.
I understand it goes on, and that nobody is perfect, all that. But I don't have a problem with people being upset and for there being real time consequences for these political bozos.
