— Ace I know he's probably pissed off at the online right, but, look, all the Daily Caller did was "hug" him a little.
More, And That's It: Erick Erickson writes that he thinks Weigel was doing exactly the job the WaPo actually intended him to do: Cover elements of the right that could be mocked as "fringe" and then so mock them.
Geraghty says the real problem is Journo-List:
I suppose it’s possible that Journo-List really was set up to be a place to connect reporters and policy wonks, as Ezra Klein contends. Those of us on the outside can’t help but wonder if it’s how liberal bloggers and major left-of-center voices in the mainstream media work out their message coordination and sort out their differences away from the eyes of the public.I’m on a conservative mailing list called Rightblogs, and from what I have seen, it succeeds at hiding conservative disagreements about as effectively as BP controls oil spills. If Rightblogs was set up to ensure that conservatives settled differences among themselves away from the eyes of the public, I think we can declare it an epic catastrophic failure on par with picking Ryan Leaf with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft. Of course, I think it was just set up as a way for conservative bloggers to talk to each other; the vast majority of messages seem to be variations of, “hey, look what I wrote!”
FWIW, I am not on a "Right Blogs" list and in fact never even heard of it.
I am so out of the loop.
I just did a search of my mailbox and see that I have several emails forwarded from "Rightblogs." Like ten.
Never noticed it. (I have over 90,000 emails in my Inbox.)
Okay, One More: There are two sayings. One about Hollywood: "It's show business, not show friends."
Another about politics: "Politics is show business for ugly people."
Putting them together, then: Politics is show business for ugly people, not show friends for ugly people.
That's Dan Riehl's take, and he doesn't give a whit about Weigel's affability.

I don't know why, but it seems like you sort of feel bad for him. I guess it is because you met him in person?
I'm not a guy who hates people just because they are liberal, but this guy actually does seem like a dick and it seems that he deserves some disgrace to be honest.
His job was to lie, or deceive if you prefer, to his readers about the fact that he is a conservative. I find this reprehensible. I don't care if the WaPo "put him in this position"... it was his decision to take such a job. I don't think he deserves any sympathy. He deserves the humiliation he (hopefully) has coming.

Bullshit. He was hired to do a job. He made no effort to do that job in good faith. The fact that the Post wanted a bad-faith actor for the job is irrelevant. No one put a gun to his head and said "be a sleazy mendacious hack, or your dog gets it".
Couldn't do his job because he didn't love it? Boo frickin' hoo. Out here in the real world, where we can't land incredibly easy gigs spewing cribbed commentary for major national papers solely on the strength of a recommendation by a vapid, butter-handed, androgynous cretin like Ezra Klein, very few of us even like our jobs, much less have a burning affection for them. We're still expected to show up and put in our best effort, or we get clipped. And there's not usually a safety valve like HuffPo to pick up the pieces for us.
Dave Weigel. He was a soldier of Rome. Honor him.

Subject: style tip
Body:
I'm watching a science show called "The Human Family Tree." They're using DNA to track the migration of humans over time. They took tweezer-like device and pulled what appeard to be a turd out of a plastic bag. To paraphrase, "It is what it looks like, a coprolite, a piece of human feces from our ancestors over 10,000 years old. They found plant material in it, but what they're after is DNA. The DNA tells us that.... (yada yada yada)."
Um. It's a coprolite if it's fossilized--if the original material has been replaced by mineral deposits. It's a piece of shit if it still has DNA in it.
So, FYI, next time you write about turds and coprolites, you'll know the difference.
Guess what? He replied to that one.

After Scott Brown won the Massachusetts Senate seat, threatening to kill the health care legislation by his presence, Weigel stressed how important it was for reporters to highlight what a terrible candidate his opponent Martha Coakley had been.
“I think pointing out Coakley’s awfulness is vital, because it’s 1) true and 2) unreasonable panic about it is doing more damage to the Democrats,” Weigel wrote.

I only ever gave Ace one tip via mail and it was stupid.
Some group of Alinskyite vermin put me on their mailing list, for what reason I don't know. Last year they were looking for thousands of seamstresses, for some December piece of global-warming stupidity, to be pulled in New York City. I told Ace that they were going to drape a bikini around the Statue of Liberty - it's the m.o. for that bunch - and that he should get a New York moronette to go undercover. As far as I know absolutely nothing happened in December in NYC.
He spared me the mockery then, I suppose, but you can go and have at me now.

SATELLITE IMAGES AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT THE LOW

RECONNAISSANCE PLANE IS CURRENTLY APPROACHING THE SYSTEM TO
DETERMINE IF A TROPICAL DEPRESSION HAS FORMED. REGARDLESS...
UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE BECOMING MORE CONDUCIVE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND A
TROPICAL DEPRESSION WILL LIKELY FORM AT ANY TIME LATER TODAY OR

Weigel is a walking, talking example of the elitist, mockful leftist nobility that regards people they disagree with like uppity peasants.
He's also a perfect example of why traditional journalism is finally turning on its head. What other business thinks it knows best what its customers need, don't really give a shit what the customers want enough to pay for, and chastise those who point out that they've gotten it all wrong?
Is it any wonder the brain trusts at NYT, WaPo and LATimes are scratching their heads and wondering why they're losing their jobs?

If you're WaPo you can't like when one of your people breaks the code of silence like that, but I don't get the impression he was supposed to lie about himself.
