Financial Briefing: No One Knows You When You're Down and Out
— Monty

I love this story. Sometimes there's a fine line between standing up to jerks and being a jerk yourself, but there's also such a thing as being a doormat because you don't want to be rude. Consideration and respect is a two-way street, and it should not be used as a form of blackmail.

If at first you don't succeed, give up and cry about it. Pull quote:

"I can't blame those who don't take to the streets any more," 18-year-old protester Danae Burnu said. "They think: I shouted, I protested, so what? What happened? Sometimes you can't save yourself and the world at the same time, and they lose money when they strike."
Because shouting and protesting is all they know how to do; when it fails, all they can do is mill around and exude an air of snotty entitlement. The shade of General Epaminondas looks at you losers and shakes his ghostly fists in inchoate rage.

Your dad may fume and shout when you wreck his car and get arrested for driving drunk, but when it comes right down to it, you know he'll bail you out. Because as stupid and thoughtless as you are, he loves you. And you you grateful? No. You know that because your dad loves you, you can do all kinds of stupid shit without having to deal with the consequences. (Unless your dad has a spine, in which case he may cut your irresponsible ass off without warning.)

Via Insty: Why don't westerners save enough? Because they are not properly motivated to do so, and because the amazing wealth and abundance of the West in recent decades has bred in people a belief that the cornucopia is fueled by magic and not hard work. The rise of the welfare state in the US has convinced many that saving is not necessary because Uncle Sam will foot the bill for our retirements. Reality will force an attitude-change, but slowly and with much angst and social upheaval.

Perennial broke-dick dog has $88 Billion in unfunded liabilities. (Read: unionized employee pensions and healthcare.) It turns out that the "YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY WON!" notice from Ed McMahon and Publisher's Clearing House didn't pan out, and the Postal Service didn't really have a Plan B. Pull quote:

In short, warned a recent Government Accountability Office report: "USPS's business model is not viable."
This may have come as news in 1980. By 1990 it was received wisdom; by 2000 it was a cliche. Now it must count as the kind of joke Henny Youngman used to tell: so old and corny that it was funny because it was so lame.

Here's some terrifying chart-fu for you: the Chinese Renminbi (Yuan) vs the US Dollar. No one is backing down on this because no one can afford to back down. The goals of the US/Europe and China are mutually exclusive at this point.

Sovereigns pinky-swear to stop debasing their currencies, and the panic-buying of gold subsides. Temporary pullback on gold or do we hear the sound of a bubble popping? Time will tell.

...aw, shit! Following my usual "Cramer is a reverse barometer" investing strategy, I'm going to have to start dumping my gold, because it's definitely in a bubble. If Cramer likes it, it's doomed.

According to Gallup, unemployment is now over 10%. I suspect that at least some of this may be that backhanded "good news" whereby more of the chronically-unemployed are re-engaging the workforce and looking for jobs again. However, it also means that the employment picture remains bleak. It also means that while we are likely to have a weaksauce "recovery" over the next few quarters, it won't be strong enough to boost employment by much. (In order for us to get back to where we were in 2005 in employment numbers, our economy would need to grow by more than 5% per year; at present, the best we can hope for is an anemic 2-3%.) Mish Shedlock has some additional thoughts.

One thing that might impact the unemployment numbers is the fact that many municipal and state governments may have to lay off employees as their budget fiasco continues. The chances of a Federal bailout for states and cities was never good given the miserable failure of TARP/QE; with a GOP-dominated House (and maybe Senate), those odds will only get worse.

In the Chinese version of The Graduate, the famous phrase would be: "Are you listening, Xie? Mung Beans.".

Apparently, in New York the nuts who used to wander around Times Square screaming incoherent nonsense now get high-ranking jobs in the Mayor's office.

Debtor's prison making a conceptual comeback? Jimmy Two-Times and Tony the Hump would only beat your ass enough to teach you the twin lessons of prudence and promptness. Siccing a bunch of lawyers on you would have struck them as being unprofessional. Besides, these guys were fans of what modern business schools call "hands-on management".

Have a bank account? You may be putting your money into a REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) without intending to. And REITs are pretty shitty investments right now.

It's something I've said about California, but it goes triple for poor bankrupt Greece: if your best plan for salvation involves the phrase "and then a miracle occurs", you're hosed. But it's not about Greece any more, really; it's about the rest of the teetering southern Euro countries (Portugal, Italy, and Spain). If Greece chooses to exit the Euro so they can go back to (and devalue) the Drachma, that will truly release the hounds. The ECB and various big German and French banks own tons of Euro-denominated bonds that would all of a sudden turn into toilet-paper should this come to pass. It's like the old parable of the boy who caught a tiger by the tail: he knew he couldn't hold on forever, but he didn't dare to let go.

If there's one thing I learned from watching the old television show Dallas, it's this: Don't mess with J.R.!

Annals of the Boned: Der Governator and SEIU agree to a mostly-meaningless pension compromise to get California's runaway public-sector pensions under control. I say "meaningless" because the new pension formula only applies to new hires, not to existing employees and retirees. So it amounts to some fractional quantum between "jack" and "squat". On the upside, Ahnuld did get the union to kick in a larger percentage of their pay into the funds. The SEIU must have felt that this was the best deal they were going to get -- if Meg Whitman takes the Governor's mansion, she probably won't be as spineless accomodating as Ahnuld is. Still, this is like trying to drink the ocean dry with a soda straw. (California's approximate pension tab, by the way? How about a cool $379 Billion, can you say Amen?)

------------------------

Well, once I lived the life of a millionaire,
Spent all my money, didn't have any cares.
Took my friends out for a mighty fine time
Boot leg whiskey, champagne and wine

Then I began to fall so low,
Lost all my good friends, had no place to go
If I get my hands on a dollar again
I'm gonna hold on to it until the old eagle grins

Nobody knows you when you're down and out
In your pocket not one penny
And as for friends, you ain't got any.

Soon as you get on your feet again,
Everybody wants to be your long-lost friend
I think it's strange, without any doubt
Nobody knows you when you're down and out

(Let's do the Bessie Smith version version instead of the Clapton one...)

I don't know if it'll be a "game-changer"; a) Jerry Brown himself didn't say it and b) These are Cali voters, but the clip definitely illustrates what scumbags Brown's Ad team are.

8 I live in a village of about 3500 souls.  The mayor came to speak at a breakfast club meeting yesterday.

There are a total of about 90 village employees, all members of various unions, the largest being the police force with a total of 21.  That is 21 for a village of 3500.

Health care costs for the cops goes up 22 percent this next year, and about 18 percent for the rest.

Not all the 90 are full-time employees, but many are.

The grand total number at the last page of the assessment rolls went down in this past cycle by 8 million dollars.

Not sure it's a game changer, because in democrat political circles, the word whore can be used as a sign of respect.

For instance:  Barney Fwank didn't fall for the conservative rhetoric of his opponent, but simply stuck with his time-tested whorish principles that have served him and his constituents so well.

33 Ditto on Herr Morgenholz. The debtor's prison angle is horseshit and the writer knows fuck-all about the debt-buying industry. Default judgments are so common because most true "deadbeats" just don't give a fuck. You're not just buying a spreadsheet with names and amounts. You're also buying whatever original media you can negotiate in the purchase agreement, with additional media requests being paid for at a fixed price. There's a lot of bad information about debt collection on the internet. "Show me my signature on the contract. You can't PROVE I owe any money." Great, what's your fax number, asshole? The jobless rate rose to 9.7 percent from 9.6 percent in August, according to the median estimate of 83 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Payrolls excluding government agencies rose by 75,000, while a drop in public staffing as the decennial census wound down caused total hiring to decline for a fourth straight month, the report may also show.

41 This conversation isn't going anything like the asshole who sold you his "debt elimination program" told it would, is it? That's one thing I've really noticed in the past couple of years: my local AM radio stations run those "get out of debt NOW!!" ads all the time. Or "Turn Debt Into Wealth!!". I always think: Who falls for this shit? But apparently, lots of people do. A friend of mine many years ago got in deep with his credit cards and turned to one of those "credit counseling agencies". He was rather shocked to find that a) they charge for the service, and it aint' cheap; and b) they really only care about credit-card debt...because they are actually owned by the credit-card company. Got mortgage debt, car-loan debt, student-loan debt, leins, or judgements against you? Too bad. All they cared about was the credit card debt -- they wanted to squeeze every nickel out of him that they could. He ended up having to declare bankruptcy anyway, after shoveling several thousand dollars of good money after bad. The old adage is true, kids. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There is no "royal road" to debt relief other than, you know, paying off the debt.

43 From my local newspaper today to all of you to laugh at, because I'm a giver:

Writer takes issue with tea party, GOP actions

There are several things that bother me and some of my acquaintances. First, we have discussed the tea party movement and wonder for what it really stands.

Its participants look just plain silly with tea bags hanging off their hats. But the signs they carry and the yelling about wanting their country back really bother us. They are an insult to the memory of those brave souls who put their lives on the line when they dumped tea into Boston Harbor.

The signs are malicious and hurtful and, to me, speak of racism, pure and simple. I remind all that the president’s mother and the grandparents who raised him were white, and his grandfather was a veteran of World War II. That never seems to come up. How many of these people have served their country or have had relatives do so? Have they forgotten the thousands of wonderful people who have died in the last eight years – is this what they want? Answers, please.

Ever since the election, the Republican Party has made no bones about not cooperating with the Obama administration. They all sat on their hands during the vote for health care, so smug, knowing full well that each of them is covered with the best care. If they have so much as a hangnail, they can go to Walter Reed or Bethesda hospitals and will get the best. John Doe, who just lost his job and his health care, is not so lucky. Emergency rooms are overcrowded and the staffs are worked to the point of exhaustion.

Then we have the talking heads, the would-be leaders of the Republican Party: Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin. What are their qualifications? They spout out half-truths and out-and-out lies. Remember the heartless way Limbaugh ridiculed Michael J. Fox when he appeared before Congress to ask for help for ParkinsonÂ’s patients? Or Beck, taking over the Washington Mall the day it should have been dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr.? If this is the new Republican Party, God help us.

Presidents Taft and Eisenhower, U.S. Sen. Everett Dirksen, etc., must be rolling over in their graves. The Republican Party has tried to destroy every program that would help the people. You and I probably do not count.

I am not just an embittered citizen. I am the proud mother of two veteran sons, one who served in the Vietnam fiasco, and the other on an ammunition ship in the first Gulf War.

As a retired nurse, I pray that the health care bill remains in place and other programs for the people go ahead.

50 Attention Ohioans:

I visited my local Republican HQ yesterday and it was dead.  Really dead.  I asked them why I was the only one in the damn place and if it has been like this for weeks.  They told me that they are getting lots of phone calls and e-mails asking them to mail/e-mail them with things they can do, signs they can put up, etc., but that most people are refusing to go into their HQs because of the political climate.  My local scuttlebutt is that: They are afraid to let anyone know they are supporting Rs because of the shakedowns already happening within union shops, schools (teachers), etc.  People's jobs and property have been threatened.

Is it like this all over the country?  Or is it just in major Obama supporting incumbent-going to upset by an R states?

I was told by the HQ that they really need help.  So if you can manage it, help them out.

I have been off and on again looking for a first home (ideally a small house or a condo in around the $100,000 range, offerings not being great given the availability in my area of Northeastern MA/Southern NH). If and when the QE bomb drops, is it a better idea to go for a place before this happens, after, or does it really not matter in the long run of things? 60

Oct. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. lost more jobs than forecast in September, reflecting a decline in government payrolls that shows the damage being done by rising fiscal deficits.

Employers cut staffing by 95,000 workers after a revised 57,000 decrease in August, Labor Department figures in Washington showed today. The median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for a 5,000 drop. The unemployment rate unexpectedly held at 9.6 percent.

Who can believe these numbers any more? This is Soviet style number manipulation. Why don't they just go all out and say unemployment dropped to 5%?

Posted by: TheQuietMan at October 08, 2010 05:11 AM (1Jaio)

61 I was hoping some financial morons could put me some f'ing knowledge on QEII It boils down to the Fed printing new money and then using that new money to buy Treasurys (bonds) or other assets. It's still inflation, still debasement of the currency. You can read a WSJ blog entry here for arguments against it. Basically, investors won't be fooled twice. Markets will probably pretty much ignore QEII, which means most of that loose cash will instead fatten up the public sector even more.

63 Good Morning Monty

Love that helicopter story as well. But it really only costs about $150/hr to rent a chopper for a "ride" so Debenshire in his 20 minutes cost them $50.

As for Greece, I had figured they would collapse before the summer was over. There must be some money going in there that we don't know about.

Notorization Bill?

Some House and Senate staffers said the Senate committee had let the bills languish because of concerns that they would interfere with individual state's rights to regulate notarizations.

Senate staffers familiar with the judiciary committee's actions said the latest one passed by the House seemed destined for the same fate. But shortly before the Senate's recess, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy pressed to have the bill rushed through the special procedure, after Leahy "constituents" called him and pressed for passage.

If so many of these bills have been passed in the House why is this the first time we are hearing about it? Another federal power grab and you can bet if Leahy is for it it is a piece of shit. I don't recall seeing the power to regulate notaries in my copy of the Constitution.

Every time I see some article about people in the U.S. not "saving enough" I want to spit. People do save in the U.S. when they can afford it. Its just that the idiots who are grinding these axes don't count all the ways that people save. There is a reason for that.

Re: Chinese markets, yes all we need right now to complete the conversion to the second great depression is a trade war.

Actual unemployment? If we counted it today the same way it was counted in the 30s it would be over 20%. No numbers coming out of Washington are worth a damn anymore.

Funny, my first statement was about why Greece had no collapsed yet and here halfway through the post it is explained. There was money going in there and as the old saying goes "borrow a thousand and the bank owns you, borrow a million and you own the bank".

CA is still thinking "federal bailout". Fk Arnold and his horse.

Bessie Smith and depression era songs. We need to get used to those again.

Remember Obama's visit ti Elkhart, Indiana? Yeah, surprising
The Guardian (UK) does too.

Well worth the read and the forwarding to all you Obama-bot friends idiots.

Fourteen months on, fewer than a dozen of the 700 promised jobs have appeared – and there is no sign of the promised $39m grant. An additional $44m in government loan guarantees has also failed to materialise.

The recovery funds that did flow in, such as the $4m for a 1,800m (6,000ft) runway for a local airport that gets no commercial traffic and is only open to private jets, have come under attack from conservatives.

But it is the sharp disparity between Obama's grand vision of green jobs and 13.5% unemployment that has soured Elkhart's view of the president and his fellow Democrats now running for election in Congress and in the state.

"He came here making big promises and people believed he would deliver on the promises he made here, and green industry hasn't followed to any great extent," said Gregory Halling, editor of the local newspaper, the Elkhart Truth. "There is a lot of disillusion with the president."

Navistar, the trucking giant that took over the bankrupt factory, said it had hired just 10 or 12 workers to build the electric vans. It has built 10 or 11 so far.

That's nowhere near the 700 jobs it promised and nowhere near the grand vision articulated by Obama in his visits to Elkhart as candidate and president.

70 Monty, On Oct. 27, a lot of those debt settlement companies are going out of business. This is their model: they tell people - A) stop paying your debts B) send those payments to us instead, and we'll put them in a "settlement trust account, which we manage C) once several months go by without any payments, your creditors will be so desperate to recover some money that they'll call you BEGGING to settle for pennies on the dollar. D) now you've got a house full of shit you don't pay for E) WIN! A few problems with that scenario: 1) The debt settlement co. is charging you usually at least 15% of the total debt you owe, not what they save you 2) You owe them that money whether they settle the debt or not 3) Those payments going to your "settlement trust account?" They're going to pay that 15% fee FIRST, plus fees for managing your account 4) Creditors get pissy when you stiff them. They'll send your account to collections, sell it to a debt buyer, and either one of those may sue you if you don't pay your debt. 5) Your credit report now looks like Joe Shit the Ragman's, because you turned "late" bills into "charged off" status Say you owe $50K. Your fucking shenanigans end up getting you sued for that $50K, court costs and attorney fees which will accumulate interest at the statutory rate for 10 or 20 years, with renewals for another 10 years available. On top of that, YOU STILL OWE $7500 to the debt settlement company, who may also sue you. Gee, thanks, Debt Adjusters Freedom Financial Force, LLC! I appreciate the bruises and you can keep the stool samples.

71 #48 Theres good reason to keep hope alive for California, the election is still over 3 weeks away and Brown looks more and more senile every day. Better still- Boxer is currently underperforming Brown. I think Fiorina's ads might be helping (unlike Whitman who is having diminishing returns on her spending) If we can dump Boxer and we flip a few house seats (and we pass I think its prop 20 which preserves the independent congressional district committee) I can take that as consolation if Moonbeam somehow wins here. I get tired of all the assholes though constantly saying "oh fuck them then" as if of the 38 million people that live here we all just loooove whats happening and if we dont we all have the money and means to just get up and move. Obama's economy has taken good care of that unfortunately.

I don't know if it'll be a "game-changer"; a) Jerry Brown himself didn't say it and b) These are Cali voters, but the clip definitely illustrates what scumbags Brown's Ad team are.

Listen closely...Brown does say it. too. Don't fall for the MFM spin that it is some "unidentified aide"...

...and it's a game changer if we make it a game changer!!!

From Big Government:

UPDATE:  At 10:58 PM, the Times published another article with the headline "Brown or Aide is heard slurring Whitman" When the Times first broke the story, they had only reported that a Brown “associate” had used the slur, but now they are acknowledging the possibility that it was Brown himself who called the California GOPÂ’s gubernatorial nominee a “whore.”  A third possibility still is that both Brown and an aide used the offensive language to describe Whitman.

UPDATE II: Los AngelesÂ’s KCAL9 news attributes the word "whore" to BrownA transcript of the conversation authorized by the LA Police Protective League and transcribed by a registered court reporter identifies the voice that said the word “whore” as “J.B.” for Jerry Brown.

From the Department of Labor:

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) rose by 612,000 over the month to 9.5 million.

About 2.5 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force in September, up from 2.2 million a year earlier. (The data are not seasonally adjusted.) These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.

Among the marginally attached, there were 1.2 million discouraged workers in September, an increase of 503,000 from a year earlier.

86 Empire of Jeff: The problem with the scenario you outlined above (which is entirely accurate) is this: credit (at least until recently) was still easy to get even if you had a lousy credit-history. Due-diligence is out the window for loan originators because they don't keep the loans themselves -- they broker the loans to other entities, who package them into securities. It's the MBS fiasco all over again. What's the point of QE, after all? To make sure that banks get lots of money to loan out. The government wants to make sure that money is actually being loaned out and not hoarded. So there is pressure to reduce the lending standards. Which in turn causes many people to take on debt (even at near-zero interest rates) that they can't afford and can't pay back. And so it goes. That's why QE is a fucking waste of time -- it's actually causing the very problem it's trying to solve.

I disagree.
CA has unique features that, if harnessed correctly, can be exploited to rebound.  If Meg gets in she'll work to bring businesses back.  Now, she really needs to stiffen up on immigration so the money earned doesn't go down a shit hole to support illegals, but I still think there will be an improvement if she wins.

91 Here's a novel, common sensical view on debt, DON"T BORROW MONEY.  I married a shopaholic, who at the time had massive credit card debt, I cut up all the credit cards and paid them off, that was ten years ago,  Funny how much money you can save when your not paying 20 plus percent interest to Citibank.  If we can't afford something, we don't buy it, or we pull cash out of savings if it is a necessity.

Posted by: beerologist at October 08, 2010 05:39 AM (kTd8J)

92 CA has unique features that, if harnessed correctly, can be exploited to rebound. I doubt it. The tax environment and the Democrat-Union controlled state legislature will combine to strangle any significant reforms a-borning. Retrenchment will not happen because California has too many employees sucking from the public tit, and they cannot reduce the payouts to retirees by law. The failure is baked into the cake at this point. If you draw trendlines out 50 years based on California's population (the tax base), their liabilities (particularly public-employee pensions and healthcare, and Medicaid), and the jobs environment, there is nothing on the horizon to inspire hope. California's past engines of wealth-creation -- agriculture, aerospace, entertainment, and tech -- are either moribund or moving elsewhere. My own recommendation would be for California to convene a state convention and just re-think the whole thing: a new state constitution, the works. I'd split the state into two and maybe even three pieces: north, south, and west. Start over and see if they can make it work this time.

Or simply hold the USPS to their original charter which was to deliver 1st class mail. Let UPS and FedEx do what they do best. The post office uses revenue from 1st class to subsidize their other operations, which are so unbelievably inefficient that it boggles the mind.

95 CA has unique features that, if harnessed correctly, can be exploited to rebound.

The only way CA will ever rebound is if by some miracle conservatives take over the legislature and repeal 50 years of idiot laws.

That is not going to happen. CA has become the Statewide version of the the "urban blight" culture. All the tax paying people and industry are leaving and have been for a long time. The only people coming in the State are deadbeats and illegals.

98 Or simply hold the USPS to their original charter which was to deliver 1st class mail. Even if that were likely (which it's not), it would only accelerate the USPS's demise. Why? Legacy costs. All those post offices, trucks, sorting centers, and hundreds of thousands of public servants -- all of whom have health and pension benefits that have to be funded and paid out. USPS is in the same position as GM was: it's a pension fund that has a mail-delivery sideline. Except that the USPS is a (quasi) government entity, so it never actually fails or goes bankrupt, it just staggers on for year after year, hemorrhaging money from every orifice. Which is then replenished from our tax dollars.

Posted by: Monty at October 08, 2010 05:52 AM (4Pleu)

99 Posted by: Monty at October 08, 2010 09:52 AM (4Pleu)

I disagree. Cutting package delivery, packaging sales, passport photo services, and all of the other crap that they are involved with would put them in a position to actually make money on the remaining business. The losses from the other stuff are huge. Their cash flow, with the usual government subsidy, would be sufficient to run the operations and pay the legacy costs. But those costs would decrease every year, and the business would gradually become self-sufficient.

And yes, it's a pipe dream.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo ( NJConservative) at October 08, 2010 05:58 AM (LH6ir)

100 Before the Republicans started giving away money to their fat-cat friends, the USPS was a profitable and happy place, where postal carriers ran beside chocolate rivers, and would laugh and play, with gumdrop smiles!

Posted by: Empire of Jeff at October 08, 2010 06:06 AM (moic3)

101 I disagree. Cutting package delivery, packaging sales, passport photo services, and all of the other crap that they are involved with would put them in a position to actually make money on the remaining business. In what way? If they cut out 50% of their business, won't they be massively overstaffed? All those public servants can't just be fired, you know. Plus their benefits are mostly vested, so laying them off doesn't really solve the entitlement problem anyway. The fixed costs would kill them -- they barely get by on the revenue they have now. Cut it in half, and they'd drown immediately. And what about all the facilities and assets the USPS owns -- planes, trucks, buildings, sorting-centers, etc. -- that would be made redundant in your scenario. They're all a drag on the USPS's books, and would have to be either sold or depreciated down to zero. Selling the buildings and stuff at any kind of a profit is a pipe-dream now and probably for a long time to come (though they could probably sell the planes and trucks easily enough). I can't see how the USPS can recover without a bankruptcy, massive layoff, and restructuring of obligations like pensions and healthcare for existing retirees. And even then, the culture of the USPS is completely at odds with what they'd need to succeed in a globalized marketplace (look at how FedEx and UPS have killed them in the package delivery business; the same thing would happen in letters if their first class mail monopoly was broken).

Posted by: Monty at October 08, 2010 06:10 AM (4Pleu)

102 The Postal Service is established in the Constitution. But the Constitution is a living document, so we can just get rid of all those useless government jobs, right? Right? Ohh... It's not LIVING-living.

Posted by: Empire of Jeff at October 08, 2010 06:17 AM (moic3)

103 If they cut out 50% of their business, won't they be massively overstaffed? All those public servants can't just be fired, you know.

PATCO!

Of course you are correct. But just ending the current over-staffing will cut salary costs enough for them to muddle through. I am not suggesting that they will become a vibrant aggressive business overnight. In fact, I doubt they will ever be efficient as defined by UPS or FedEx. But losing several billion dollars each year is untenable.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo ( NJConservative) at October 08, 2010 06:20 AM (LH6ir)

104 But losing several billion dollars each year is untenable. Maybe...but with federal subsidies, they can bleed for a hell of a long time. The USPS has lost money in (IIRC) 28 of the last 34 years. If everyone agrees that the USPS must be kept around for some reason, then just nationalize it again and do away with the pretense that it is any kind of actual business.

Overestimate fueled state's landmark diesel law

California grossly miscalculated pollution levels in a scientific analysis used to toughen the state's clean-air standards, and scientists have spent the past several months revising data and planning a significant weakening of the landmark regulation, The Chronicle has found.

It was off by 340%. That is not an "honest mistake". This is the same kind of shit that goes on with the AGW scam any time someone gets to actually see their numbers and how they get them.

And what are they talking about doing? Revising the law! In a sane world the law would be repealed and the authors of the calculation would go to jail. But not in CA.
