— Gabriel Malor President Obama's Gulf drilling moratorium has driven away its first oil rig.
And the Ocean Endeavor's exodus probably won't be the last, according to oil industry officials and Gulf Coast leaders who warn that other companies eager to find work for the now-idled rigs are considering moving them outside the U.S.Devon Energy Corp. had been leasing the Endeavor to drill in the same region of the Gulf as BP's leaking Macondo well, which has been gushing crude since a lethal blowout April 20.
But Diamond announced Friday it will lease the rig through June 30, 2011, to Cairo-based Burullus Gas Co., which plans to send the Endeavor to Egyptian waters immediately.
Larry Dickerson, CEO of Houston-based Diamond, signaled that other of his company's rigs could be relocated, too.
The Gulf economy won big when the district court knocked down Obama's drilling ban as "arbitrary and capricious" and won again at the Fifth Circuit, which refused to keep the ban in effect during the appeal. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration keeps signaling that it won't allow drilling no matter what the courts say. On the day the Fifth Circuit ruled against, the Administration announced that if any company attempted to resume drilling it would reissue its drilling moratorium, forcing the issue back to the courts again.
That is the very definition of "arbitrary and capricious" government action, but the uncertainty it creates is more than enough to depress economic activity in the Gulf.
"There are two types of rigs in the deep-water Gulf today: those that are leaving the country and those that want to, because with this moratorium hanging over their heads, they simply can't go back to work," Brady said. "I'm afraid this is the first of many rigs and many American jobs to leave the Gulf."

Obama is pro-business, but he needs to stick it to the dirty oil companies (and banks).
Thank God Reagan was wrong, and the costs of doing business will never trickle down to the middle class.

I wonder why gas prices aren't soaring right now.
Makes you scared to think about it doesn't it? Gulf spill, war in the Middle East, summer vacation season....is the economy worse than even Monty's letting on???

If this administration was intentionally disrupting the economy to create a depression, would their actions be any different?
Posted by: Mark at July 11, 2010 07:15 AM (0nwFA)
In keeping with the administration's rapprochement with Islam, maybe Barry could issue a fatwa against moving oil rigs out of the gulf.
Or maybe he could just give more money to the South American countries who are developing their oil resources.

At somepoint it will. Right now this economy is in a deflationary cycle, which is why the Fed wants to keep printing money to pump it up, but this then devalues the money even more.
At someone in the next year, starting this Fall, there will a hyperinflationary depression, and higher gas prices very well could be the trigger.

In the old days of the oil wildcatters they would ignore the jug-eared asshole and go out drilling anyway.
Even now with wimpy CEOs if the courst have ruled and there is no injunction Obama can't do a damn thing. If they start drilling and he sends marshals they can easily get a writ and sue his communist ass off.

Last week, 2 cars. When I left at 3 p.m., the streets were empty. Lot, half empty.

And who's gonna stop Osama Obama? Eric Holder and the Department of Justice For the Select Few?
Face it: the Traitor-in-Chief and his co-conspirators have changed the rules, and they are getting away with it so far. Constitution? Gone. Bill of Rights? Vanished.
Right now, the nation is made up of three groups: ADHD-riddled squishes (Ed Morrissey, for example) who can muster a whole 30 seconds of outraged outrage but can "see the other side" and keep mouthing platitudes about 2012, as if the Chicago Jesus can't fix that election as completely as he has fixed previous votes; those who buy into Obama's godlike wonderfulness, and are ready to hang any racist teabagger who resists Hope & Change (I know several of these, and they are virulent); and those who are educated and patriotic.
Group Three couldn't fill a commuter train, it seems. Things have gotten so far out of hand that the corrective measures are almost all unpleasant.
Time to re-read the Declaration of Independence and draw the appropriate conclusions.

All is not lost. We still have plenty of places to drill that are more accessible than the Gulf. When the adults are back in charge, we can resume, if not increase drilling (hello ANWR ).
When the adults are back in charge...
And again, the GOP and Michael Potmetal are missing another golden opportunity to present a true, viable alternative to the job-killing policies of the Dims. They could be saying, "Our country is rich in natural resources, but Obama and his radical cohorts have prevented the safe harvesting of them for over a generation, while other countries have expanded their efforts, some of them in the Gulf of Mexico. Isn't it time we used America's resources for America's prosperity?"

TJ, if McCain gets reelected, he just might be persuaded to start voting a bit more conservatively, since he's the type who absoutely must stick his finger in the wind instead of voting from a firm set of principles.
Of course, the best scenario would be for him to be replaced with a real, live conservative. Hayworth ("Hey, it's your tax dollars!") hardly fits that description. The realignment of Congress will definitely take more than one election, I just hope we don't get complacent as a country, if we make big gains in November.
McCain definitely needs to go. POW or not, he doesn't seem to hold the nations' values in high regard, as evidenced from his squishy voting record.

From the LA Times:
State law requires the Golden State's three large investor-owned utilities to procure 20% of their retail electricity sales from clean sources by the end of 2010. But with less than six months left to meet that requirement, even government watchdogs don't expect the power companies to make it.
snip~
Utility executives said they've moved aggressively to ink deals with
renewable power producers throughout California. But some of those
firms have had difficulty securing financing in a troubled economy.
Others have hit technological snags or run into permitting and land-use
hurdles that have delayed their timetables by months or even years.
Transmission bottlenecks are another obstacle.
"The renewable projects tend to be out in the distance where our
customers are not," said Stuart Hemphill, senior vice president of
power procurement for Southern California Edison.

Nope. I've been paying attention to the polls same as anybody, but I'm not seeing this, sadly.
Lots of 'conservative Dems' who really do know better will, despite their assertions to the contrary, vote Dem anyway. They'll fall for reasonable-sounding rhetoric because they haven't had the sense to get out of the Dems by now so they're lost to reason anyway.
Then there's the emotive & brain-dead Dems, which is most of them, who knee-jerk vote that way regardless of what happens. They believe entirely that the GOP can do nothing right.
For our part, we'll do our usual thumbs-up-the-butt thing and splinter into myriad mutually-exclusive cliques while the religious Cons stay home and pray.

Yeah, history really backs you up on that one. Having a firebrand devisive spokesman sure didn't work for the democrats with Howard Dean, unless of course you count taking the house, senate and presidency as a win or something.

Look, you want to hang around the sandbox all day hoping for a peek up Sarah's skirt, that's cool with me. But your comparison is faulty.
Dean was only a fragment of the success that resulted from Dems 'Do Nothing' policies. The Media did more to help the Dems than Dean did. Or do you think the Bush Derangement Syndrome was part of Dean's Doctrine?

What's even scarier is that the Obama voters saw the Dem Convention where he ascended into the heavens, or maybe Mount Olympus, they knew about the 20 years sitting in the pews of the Wright church, they knew about all his communist friends, knew his wife was no proud of the country, and they still voted for this unqualified arrogant racist.
With a porous border and public education, we conservatives (not white people!) are losing a numbers game. I think the best hope for the election in November is that Barack won't be on the ballot, because blacks and dumbass kids would show up to hit all the (D)s in the 98% range.

Apparently, at least some of you is still dumb enough to think/argue like a Democrat.
Sarah has a little cache left. Mostly it is as a mudslinger.
She is not and has never been a viable candidate for higher office. My opinion on this does not factor in.

"She is not and has never been a viable candidate for higher office. "
Neither was the community organizer, and yet here we are.
Gov. Palin not only has to deal with rather amazingly insulting dems towards her, but repubs as well towards her. No wonder both establishment parties cannot stand her and are pretty frightened by her. But real conservatives do support her.
There was a reason even in AK, the oil companies who normally owned the repub party refused to give her any money, and gave it to the dem candidate instead, for the first time in AK electoral politics. They knew Gov. Palin could not be controlled and play footsie with the industry.
Anyone who can irk the establishment on both sides that much is a damn good candidate.

Look, Sarah would be a dream in the Presidency - but she'd have to get voted in first. Not going to happen, at least in this cycle. It's a tragedy of the first order, but there it is.
Find another potential candidate. Sarah may help to point the way to that leader.
I think we're going to wind up with the next Pres being a hard-ass, whether Dem or GOP, FWLIW.

could be a damn good candidate. In order to do so, they must act properly as well.
The argument you propse prior to this is faulted.
Obama was a weak Candidate swept into office by emotional fervor.
So Sarah is an equitable candidate to be proposed for office provided the emotional tummult is sufficient to get her elected?
The Traditions of the Office, which Obama flaunts and ignores, are no different than the traditional paths to the Presidency.
Sarah chose to migrate towards the spotlight rather than continue on the path of public service. She has abandoned her one undeniable path of credibility to gain the one thing she lacked from day one - notoriety.
Perhaps I am wrong, and Facebook is the answer. It it may prove to be the answer to the question of electibility, but not to the problems facing our nation as a whole.

Perhaps 'Muck Raking' would be a better fit.
She is on the sidelines commenting like a partisan Pundit. I don't think a Politician with national appeal as a Presidential Candidate can get away with that.
There's a degree of respect that needs to be maintained to protect the image of the candidate. Not McCain or Bush II type stoicism, but an appearance as such.
Sarah does not have that.

garrett - what you and all the other "Palin's a quitter" bleaters miss is this: She quit for the good of her state. The Democrats made it perfectly clear that they were willing to bankrupt the state to destroy her.
Good Luck selling that tripe in a national election with 0 media assistence.
She had a weak set of advisors who convinced her that she needed to move into the 'mainstream'. She chose fame. She chose to be branded like the 'Chocolate Wun'.

She'd be killed at the national level. Currently, anyway. Identify her base - it's you. Are you & yours truly a majority? Did women back her nationally or were they repelled?
Identify Obama's base - how many, percentages, do you think can be co-opted by her declaring for President? Where do you think the national - not the conservative national - mood is right now?
Both wings are spoiling for a fight, I think. Both see the next cycle and/or 10 years on as being vital for changing the country towards their views. Altering it.
The only salient 3rd viewpoint I'm seeing is for a hard-ass to emerge, slapping down spending and everything else. A national Daddy with a big belt looking to whoop-ass on ALL the kids. Sarah ain't that girl, in an image sense, although I'll grant she would do just that.
The risk is that hard-ass may very well be the strongman predicted by Hayek. I've always been more concerned with who comes after Odumbass, anyway. All conditions for tyranny are now set, after all, which is why we're debating candidates so fkn early - its that important.

Despite "0 media assistance" she's the only Republican on the national stage that has any name recognition at all.
Got you.
Now ask yourself why this makes an Alinsky-ite Opposition gleeful at the prospect of running against her?
Sarah gives them Wood, but not in the way you'd think.

The hard-ass I'm predicting will also be expected to "get shit done" no matter how that happens. We've lived through more than a decade of gov't impotence on national matters - Katrina/NOLA, BP are the main culprits for that view.
Posted by: evil midnight bomber what bombs at midnight at July 11, 2010 09:40 AM (hCQG5)
I think there are several Politicians on the National Level that are spot on for the chance at 2012.
But the mid-terms are going to change the field immensely in my opinion. Right now we are reading the Barometer in our 'Trick Knees', flipping through the Almanac, and guessing.
Once we get a feel for the Damage the 'O' has wrought for himself, we'll be better able to measure the candidates.
As much as I like P. Ryan, youth might not be the sell right now...Christie is a dynamo and an obvious choice for a VP candidate.
I live in fear of Jeb Bush.
"Three Times the Bush" - is a hard sell. Market-wise.

You are reacting to her in a visceral way. Your arguments against her are based on unfounded anxiety. If you are to be believed at all.
I have anxiety that Sarah Palin lacks; appeal, is shrill, is acting as a partisan pundit rather than a candidate for office, has little experience or credentials for the office of president, is polarizing within and without the party, is working against her chances at achieving national office, appeals only to the lowest common denominator in BOTH parties?
No. Those are her credentials.
She's Peggy Fucking Hill.

Actually, I shut off at the sound of her voice. It's awful to me.
As such, I read what she 'writes' and the coverage from her events in the Conservative media. I can't wade through the vitriol of the MSM or leftist commentary on her often, as it is mostly irrelavent to the subject matter.
I appreciate the opinions of those Pundits you mention, but I read most of their commentary as complimentary rather than supportive of her hopes for office. To me they are paying lip service to her and approving of her actions, not of her (potential) candidacy. I never said she was a bad advocate for conservatism. I just scoff at her credentials to be named de facto leader of a movement she has difficulty articulating.
Certainly conservatives would vote for her over Obama.
To me, she's a less than appealing candidate. I suspect many feel the same way, but don't want to upset those who think otherwise. She can be a useful tool, but nothing more. This is my opinion based on who she is, what she says, and how she acts.
Insulting? Hardly.

Meantime, hillbill is fixing to take advantage of someone's bankruptcy
And, with this story, went any notion I might ever entertain to vote for hillary. I thought the administration was playing nice and we all should learn to play nice but the article doesn't give ya the warm and fuzzies and you kinda feel this another one of those real estate deals that really benefits the buyer, like the one in Chicago did. "The current owner, Paul Wallace, founded the Manhattan real-estate firm Broadstone Group. The 74-year-old retiree declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Westchester federal court in May."
It is sort of really depressing to see that it is alright for some people to make oodles of money on all kinds of ventures, but not alright for others. I mean if you are the CEO of an American company and you are doing your job well, they plan to tax you to death and put so many rules in place that your hands are tied and your profits will dry up. The capitalist system is only allowed to work for those who have connections, it seems.
I remember watching people struggle under the clinton tax program. Knew young families who were making nice salaries and it was all going away and not into the bank for college and not into a nice house and not into a retirement account (they weren't government workers or union guys). so now, they want to nearly destroy these folks all over again? The irony is, have heard one talking heard after another deride the American public for having a low rate of savings. Well, how do you save when you know you are being taxed up the wazoo, the price of everything is high and you need to think about college for your progeny?
