1. Highway 66 in Sevierville, Tenn.In Sevierville, Tenn., at a cost of more than $38 million, construction on a four-mile stretch of Highway 66 has significantly reduced the amount of traffic to area businesses. Local enterprises that prospered a year ago are now under severe strain due the impediments the stimulus construction on the road has inflicted.
If a construction worker gets a job building a road, and a retail worker loses his job as a result, is that a job "saved" or "created"?

Why yes, yes it is. In fact, it's a further reflection of our great Administration's laser like focus on jobs....
Heh.

Well, using ObamaMath(tm), it's both: the construction worker's job was "created", and the retail worker's job was "saved" because, had it not been for the stimulus, the retail worker's job would have been eliminated!

I bet the signs announcing the "Paid for with Stimulus Recovery Act"are nice, tho. (ahem - that's uncollected tax dollars/Chinese debt. Dems can't even be honest w/ advertising)

According to news stories I have read the Taliban are reforming in Afghanistan. My question is: "Why aren't these people Kibbles and Bits - where are the B52's?"
Think of the civilian jobs we could be creating in the munitions industry.

"If a construction worker gets a job building a road, and a retail worker loses his job as a result, is that a job "saved" or "created"?"
But if the construction worker is only employed for the short amount of time needed to build the highway and the retail worker was set to be employed for a long amount of time, perhaps decades if the shop hadn't gone out of business, then this is a net gain. Right?

There is a difference between what looks like a good idea and what actually is a good idea, i.e. one that really works out here in the real world.

Well the construction workers job was "saved" and "created" because he had a job before, but he got a "new" job working on the road. And as for the employee of the store well the store now has a new job opening so that counts as a "created" job. +3 jobs saved or created!
I do believe i just earned a job at the white house!

Dave, evidently you don't appreciate the genius of leftard policies and have made a mess of the foundation of leftarditude:
Libtard Rule #1) Nothing moves on its own. If left alone, the world is a static place that never changes.
Libtard Rule #2) It takes government action to move the anything.
Libtard Rule #3) Things only move exactly the way the government intends, and stop moving when government "help" is taken away.
Therefore, if the retail job disappears, it's because the retail manager is just trying to make the government look bad. That manager needs to be investigated.
And, in answer to your question, the calculation is one job "saved or created" for every paycheck the construction worker receives, as it is being "saved or created" every pay period. And there are also the jobs of government employees that are "saved or created" in order to man the unemployment office that the retail worker has to go to for his checks.

These numbers are such complete lies it is astounding.
First of all, the economy looks to grow at about 1% or less for the next couple of years - and possibly go negative if Barry Mugabe has anything to do with it, and to just keep up with population growth and keep unemployment from going higher - we need sustained growth of about 3%.
Good lord, these asshats in Washington are beyond ignorant.
Everything coming out of the D.C. now is smoke and mirror lies.

I feel compelled to offer some advice to our sisters who like to throw stones at those of us who respectfully disagree with them on this issue (and they sometimes refuse to even countenance the fact that some of us can call ourselves feminists and disagree with those who claim the mantle of “real feminists”). First, ladies, it’s hard to take a critic seriously when they lecture you wearing a bear suit. So, it’s difficult for me to drum up much outrage at this latest ad. But, really, lying about a sister while wearing an Ewok outfit is no way to honor our foremothers on the eve of the 90th anniversary of their victory. But, that aside, I’d love to know where you got those get-ups. Halloween is just around the corner, and Piper and Trig would look adorable as little grizzly bears.
From Palin's facebook page.
She clearly reads ace. i expect a "nut on" reference in the not too distant future.

That is one job created thanks to the stimulus and one job lost due to the greedy business owners who don't care about their employees.

Time to recommend What Is Seen and What is Not Seen by economist Frederic Bastiat.
There is only one difference between a bad economist and a good one: the bad economist confines himself to the visible effect; the good economist takes into account both the effect that can be seen and those effects that must be foreseen. Yet this difference is tremendous; for it almost always happens that when the immediate consequence is favorable, the later consequences are disastrous, and vice versa. Whence it follows that the bad economist pursues a small present good that will be followed by a great evil to come, while the good economist pursues a great good to come, at the risk of a small present evil.Posted by: Fred Bastiat at August 19, 2010 08:59 AM (R/BKu)

Saw this in a post over at Tepid Air, sandwiched in between Ed "Poppin' Fresh" Morrissey's nauseatingly self-promotional comments ("I said..." "watch this interview with me...").
One thing that bothers me about what Palin is doing: these days she seems to be fixating on endorsing female candidates. In its way, that's as bad (IMO) as EMILY's List prattling about candidates with indoor plumbing.
Is this "Mama Grizzly" stuff a bug or a feature?
I though/hoped we were past all this race/gender identification crap.

Her value lies in the fact that she has absolutely no problem being perceived as a complete idiot for the sake of those above her. I think that she, and many dems for that matter, feel that if they sacrifice themselves to provide the idiotic answers, they spare their leaders from having to. She's like the political equivalent of a suicide bomber.

As far as the comments about feminism. That was one of the first things that annoyed me about the palin critics. They kept talking about "a women's right to choose" and yet it never dawned on them that "a women's right to choose" also means she can choose to have the child, even if it is "less than perfect" in the eyes of all those alleged feminists.

Well that half is a waste of time. The left never plays by the rules, even their own. They never have, and even go so far as to get genuinely offended when anyone has the temerity to suggest they should.

But Sevierville folks (who all tend to be a bunch of cousin-humping toothless Deliverance types) didn't like the fact that these tourists were getting through town without spending money there and did everything they could to jam up traffic and force people to stop to visit "Knife World" or "Leather Nighties and Stuff" or "Jimmy's Tattooe Parlore" and all the other god-awful crap that they sell in that criminal-ridden, pest-infested hell hole.
This money was well spent as any tourist will tell you that spending a single minute less in that crap town is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
BTW--Dolly Parton is not really from Sevierville... She is from Caton's Chapel, which is way up the creek and much classier.
So anyway-- Go Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders. Screw you Sevier County High School Bears!
