Merry Christmas to ace and the co-bloggers... and especially to the moron nation who make this place so great.

25 Well, the snow that wasn't supposed to start until dinner time has already accumulated to the tune of about an inch and a half on my patio table. Could end up being a 4-inch "storm", which down here (NC) translates into full panic mode. Local radio guy says it's the first "official White Christmas" in the Triad since at least the Sixties. Officially.

Are you going to engage in some guerrilla warfare or bite your tongue for the occasion?

Its pretty cool.  I didn't know it was in Cleveland.  Opposite corner of the state for me, about a 6 hour drive, but I may hit it if I am in the vicinity one day.  Pics of some of the adult actors in the movie.  You will pic out the actor who played Scut Farcus immediately.  Flick is much more difficult.

52 To All My Democrat Acquaintances: Please accept with no obligation, implied or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2011 but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . It can get testy at times and I hate being in the middle. They can pull out the boxing gloves when I'm not there for all I care!

Ace is a pretty straight up dude, so far as I've seen.

Agree or disagree, he's pretty up front about his positions.

So, if he says that he is making stuffing, we should take this seriously.

Has he ever made stuffing before?

Why is he starting now?

I can't imagine a dogpile of stuffing recipes would be useful, though they would be tasty, so go ahead!

That would be a great use of the "tip-line", if you ask me!

Sure, 9 out of 10 calls are going to be useless for the investigation but everyone knows that one in three crazy ladies know how to cook awesome pancakes!

To all the troops still deployed: I know what itÂ’s like being overseas and deployed to a combat zone during the holidays away from family. During my Army career, I spent more time outside the country, (in peace and war) than stateside.

In the last 9 years the United States Army has done an incredible job with less Soldiers and fewer casualties than any military in a major war.

YouÂ’re doing a great job, and it cannot be said enough.

To all:  Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year.

Take care,

112 CoolCzech:  The essay you were looking for is called "One Solitary Life."  Here it is:

Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.

He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself...

While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. While He was dying His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth – His coat. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.

Nineteen long centuries have come and gone, and today He is a centerpiece of the human race and leader of the column of progress.

I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.

Martinis sure do sneak up on you.  They have a delayed reaction,  so when you have your second double you think all is well,  only to have them go off in your system like a depth charge!

Shudder.  Do NOT want to wake up feeling like THAT again!

A nice glass of merlot is just fine.

The snow pretty much bypassed us here in central Indiana and headed for DC,  which serves them right.  We still had a white Christmas from all of the stuff that is already on the ground.   I am now going to watch Ralphie and family in "A Christmas Story,"  since it reminds me so much of my childhood.  Instead of the Bumpass's,  we had the Cordings,  with goats and mules who always wandered onto our property.   And Nehi soda was our favorite childhood drink.

Merry Christmas!

Merry, merry, merry all you good folks.  I'm on one of my projects on a rig in the Gulf of Mexico this time.  I kinda volunteered for this one so the guys with young kids could be home for Christmas.  But the catering staff outdid themselves:  Prime rib, lobster, ham, bacon wrapped shrimp, turkey and dressing, sweet taters, green bean cassarole, etc.  No grog for the oil industry but I'm a contented man.  However, The Almighty Hawk is outside and he's open for business.  Tours around the rig are short duration today.  'Tis a bit chilly.

Thanks to all the vets and those who serve currently.  God bless our great nation.

I should add that last summer, our backyard pear tree gave us a bumper crop, and we put up a few quarts of pear sauce. It's like applesauce, only much, much better; and on roast pork, it is pure ambrosia. We'll uncap one of those precious jars for our feast.

167 The more secular the nation,Â…Â…. the cheaper it is. We Americans (with little help from the blue states) give 1.67% of our GNP to charity. In Britain they contribute .073 and the French, give just .14%.

I'm not sure if it's the secularism as much as it's the socialism.

Mormons are the most charitable by most measures in this country, however they give to the church, not so much to schools etc.  So if you break out philanthropy away from people's churches (which I think in a sense you should since giving to your own church is a different type of giving than giving to other types of charities... in a sense, one benefits from giving to one's church in terms of eternal salvation), I think that there's not a sharp divide between religious people and less or areligious people.

The US is the most generous country, but I think it's because we do so freely, rather than have it taken from us by the government to distribute.

197 Regarding giving to the church as opposed to a charity:

If your church spends a good portion of its money on service to the poor,  then giving indeed counts as a charity.  Catholic churches spend quite a bit in help for the poor.  Mormon churches have an outreach program,  food banks,  etc.

And giving to your church does not "buy' you salvation.  The Scriptures tell us that.

The best advice I can offer is to check to see what is done with your money.  Supporting a church is,  indeed,  charity,  especially if you think of the lives that are changed by its work.

Charities like Samaritan's Purse and the Salvation Army are arms of the church,  and the Salvation Army is a church in its own right.

Just check where your money goes,  and give to agencies who help the poor and are NOT "community organizers."

God bless us,  every one!

213 Let me clarify what I mean by making a distinction between charitable donations to one's church versus other types of charitable donations.

If you are a member of a church, you do - in a sense - benefit from the gifts you give to your church in the sense that you are part of that organization and its existence depends on your contributions.  It's not that it is buying salvation, but there is a linkage between the survival of your church, made possible in part by donations (in a temporal sense), and your salvation.  Without the church to which you belong, presumably it is more difficult to follow God's teachings and attain salvation.

In a very coarse sense - and not meaning any disrespect - gifts to ones church are a type of membership.  (In some churches this is closer to being literally true than in others.)

I think that's a different equation than giving to other sorts of charities.  And, from what I've read at professional philanthropy sites, it appears that there is generally an attempt made to separate out someone's charitable contributions to churches from donations to non-denominational/secular charities.

I still think the reason we in the U.S. give more generously than other countries has to do with our freedom to do so and the (relatively) lower involvement of the State in aspects of life that we leave to charitable organizations.  As I recall, when I looked this up earlier this year there was a positive correlation between lower taxes and higher charitable giving (in the US).

Posted by: Peaches at December 25, 2010 04:01 PM (zxpIo)

219 Y-not,  not wishing to be argumentative,  but are you thinking donations to a church are required?   And are you not realizing that at some churches (particularly the Catholic Church,  mine) that a certain segment of donations automatically go to the poor?  And we also can donate through our church to the St. Vincent de Paul Society,  which does nothing but help the poor.

My church also runs a food bank,  help for unwed mothers,  clothes for poor children, tuition assistance to kids who cannot afford catholic schools (and not just in our parish), help for the homeless,  and a separate complete mission to Haiti,  to which my parish,  all by itself,  has contributed over $100,000 this quarter alone.

Monsignor Mark and Father Don,  our priests,  also donate a portion of THEIR salary to programs for the poor.

So I think you are not informed on what churches do.  If you are thinking those donations simply go for mortgage payments and pastor salaries,  you are way off the mark.

226 Regarding church giving vs. charity: once you join a church, there is a certain positive duty to support it. You expect a salariedinister to be there Sunday morning. You expect the lights to be on. The building is heated in the winter, and that's not free. None of those expenses help the poor or the sick, nor do you give your with the intention of doing so. You simply must give, if you want the church to be there for you. Charity is purely voluntary, with the intent of aiding those that are less fortunate than you... The very definition of "charity."

My parish also pays bills for people who are out of work or are going through a tough time - whether they are Catholic or not.  That comes from our general funds that are part of our tithe.  I like this system because the parish office not only knows who needs the assistance but they don't forget to get the bills paid for the people like I probably would.

I miss Circuit City, they made Best Buy honest. And for cables, Monoprice is great (though shipping sucks) and Newegg for anything else when it comes to computers

273 For gaming I don't know how it looks. Remember Monitors have a much higher pixel density than Televisions. (I think)

It would be the way to do 3D Gaming though  as the 3D monitors are ridiculous.

Posted by: Santa Zakn at December 25, 2010 08:57 PM (zyaZ1)

yeah, my tv has the same resolution as my monitor. I don't think the size degradation should affect me too much (especially since I play a lot of console games).

I found that ebay is the cheapest place to buy most anything.

275 I think they over-expanded and didn't do too well in markets where they were competing with Best Buy.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at December 25, 2010 08:59 PM (c0A3e)

they also undercut themselves quite a bit trying to compete with Best Buy. And the constant high overturn on employees didn't help as they always ended up with people who flunked out of working for Gamestop

It's entirely possible that you're just not doing it right.  A fairly common moron problem, iirc.

A plastic bottle cap, right?

SiM, the Circuit City stores in Somerville and Saugus were always busy.

That's why it was a shock when they closed.

"pennies-a-cap-full"

I remember that from the old Woolite commercials.

284 When the local Circuit City went away last year, Best Buy raised their prices until Ultimate Electronics opened in November. Good to see some competion back!

Does Best Buy own Geek Squad?

You can't find 'Best Buy' anywhere on their vans, I don't think.

291 that's funny because I said to myself that it was the first time I saw Fishburne had some actual acting talent.

Fishburne looked like a fat slob in PREDATORS, like he was gasping for breath half the time. I hear Fishburne's daughter is doing hardcore porn too. Awesome.  :/

292 Yea Dude. NewEgg is the bomb. even to RMA shit. Got a bad power supply from them a while back they RMA'd it no questions, no hassles.

yeah, it's not worth buying heavy shit online

and not a good idea to buy lcd tvs  online because they get banged around during shipping.

294 Was Richard the Lionhearted really gay, I wonder, or did the movie writers just make that up?

From all I've read it seems to be a Hollywood addition. And John wasn't the total incompetent he's made out to be in the movie. Still, stunning dialog (It's 1183 and we're barbarians), so I watch every time it's on.

295 Geek Squad is a Best Buys brand. Lots of $$ to be made with installations, since the markup on Electronics is not that much.

still like how they charge $130 to hook up someone's 360/PS3/Wii

297 I've got to stop buying games on Steam. I'm mostly buying shit with some serious length and I gots no time to play them.....shit, I've still got games from 2 Christmas sales ago that I still haven't even touched yet.

298 Ack, just shoehorned my Paul-nut neighbor out the door.  Fuck those people sideways with a rusty pineapple.  They know they are going to guarantee the fascist fraud a second term and their self-righteous stoopid will not be checked.  Merry Christmas, thanks for making me sick at heart.

Posted by: Peaches at December 25, 2010 06:15 PM (zxpIo)

299 I apologize, I should have kept that to myself.  And I would have, had I not tripped on the sidewalk in the courtyard in my cat-jammies and slid 6 feet in the mud.  I think that was what put me over the "keep it to yourself, peaches" edge.

Posted by: Peaches at December 25, 2010 06:22 PM (zxpIo)

300 Damn, I was hoping to hear one of the 'ettes broke down and gave Kratos a little, ummmmm, "taste" (IYKWIMAITYD) so he'd finally embrace decadence and and stop whingeing about it.

Nope.

Prolly not gonna happen.

He's already all pre-judgmental and shit.

It's kind of hard to get even a limited freak-on if you know, beforehand, that your partner disdains you as somehow "decadent".

Honestly, I'm more likely to try to validate my femininity by giving a random blow-job to some trucker at the TTT than engage with Kratos.

Either way, I'm sure that I would feel like shit, afterwards.

At least with the trucker, my tears and humiliation might net me $20!

Evening all, I'm back. Not that anyone really missed me.  We stopped at my son-in-laws parents home to drop off gifts.  The usual snacks were on the counter, my daughter, hubby and grandson were there.  I grabbed a handful of some trail mix and popped some of the handful in my mouth.  Kind crunchy, didnt taste very good right out of the box.  Yup, somebody had put the dogfood on the counter to keep the baby out of it. It did give me health teeth and gums.

304 Couple loose ends I'd like tied up here:
(1) so what the hell, about Woolite? Did somebody buy them up and shut them down, like everything else that's any effin good and over 30?
(2) Gene Wilder and the sheep don't even count? You got a punchline, other than the one cap full?
(3) Nursing homes! Hey, what about the cabbies and railroad engineers huh. Can we just stipulate that it is sometimes somebody's job to work on Christmas for chissakes, and that's not the tragic end of the world?

There's a night shift  tonight at the post office, and you'd just as soon see them choke. All the ships at sea! The RotoRooter Man! Satellite Spooks at the NSA, and astronauts in orbit. The syrup's getting thick.

I gay ron tee you, there are bennie-sucking assholes reading this site tonight who would not leave unemployment to work on Christmas, because that is just asking too much, and "I can't handle nights." Let's direct a special blessing to them, too, while the nose is still all fudgy.

The liturgical churches - Roman Catholic, Episcopal/Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist - have standardized their services and readings to the point that there isn't much difference in their services.

CC, of course they would have almost identical services.  Anglicans and Lutherans broke away from the Catholic Church and the Methodists broke away from the Anglicans.

Merry Christmas Ace, co-bloggers and morons and moronettes, and may the New Year bring you all success, health and happiness.

306 CC, of course they would have almost identical services. Anglicans and Lutherans broke away from the Catholic Church and the Methodists broke away from the Anglicans. Not really. For 3 centuries the chief Anglican service was Morning Prayer, without communion, on Sunday Morning. That all changed only a few years ago, when the Anglicans reverted to the Catholic model of weekly communion/mass. Hence Peach's confusion. And it goes beyond that - the different churches agreed to common liturgical readings, and putting the elements of the service in the same order, etc.
