I don't think Stupak ever intended to be the deciding vote on DemCare. I always knew he wanted to vote for it; he made it plain enough. You're forgetting three things:

1. Stupak won't be the incumbent and the new Dem challenger (who is looking to be a pro-choice nutjob, BTW) won't be able to claim things like seniority in the House or say "look how many earmarks I delivered for you!".

2. Stupak's departure opens the door for other R's who were on the sidelines to give the race a shot, ones that might not have done so otherwise, giving us a stronger pool.

3. The analogy with CT is flawed - CT is a blue state no matter how you cut it, and if Dodd had stayed, the R campaign would have been entirely anti-Dodd rather than "on the issues".  Stupak's district is a conservative one and we have a good shot at it even just on the issues.

I don't think that's going to work. Michigan's 1st CD is a very marginal district that went for Bush twice and Obama by only the barest sliver. In districts like this all over the country, any fresh Dem who runs under "hey, I didn't do it!" is likely to get a cool reception from constituents who have very fresh memories of how they were just punked by their previous "Blue Dog" congressman.
