— Ace Lately I've been thinking a little about culture, and how it's really just made up of three basics: Language, food, and sex. Oh, there is some stuff that is not language, food, or sex, but I'd say that stuff like tv, movies, and music are subsets of the "language" category, and stuff like manners is either a subset of the sex category or a subset of the food category.
Someone's culture, someone's basic preferences and mores in these things, are important to his sense of of identity, often in ways that are invisible to him. For example: Do you, like me, not only turn off Spanish-language music radio stations faster than any other station, and not only faster, but with a little extra punishment-pressure on the Scan button? Like you're annoyed that your radio actuall dared to pick up this station and present it to you?
Why do I do that? I know I'm annoyed by it. I'm also annoyed at people pushing such suspectly alien stuff on me. World Music. Foreign films. Foreplay. It's an intrusion. Not a violation, but I do sort of get my hackles up about it.
I reallly shouldn't. In the end, it's no big deal, isn't it? Who cares?
But I do care. It annoys me when people push elements of an intruder culture on me. It may be irrational, but nevertheless, it's real.
Behavioral psychologists often say that this is the mark of a conservative, and liberals are much more "open" to new experiences and different cultures. But behavioral psychologists tend to be overwhelmingly liberal, and wind up "proving" that which they want to be proven; their research tends to be directed, subconsciously, not towards objective results, but towards self-flattery. One cannot help but notice so much of results of soft/pop science tend to, oddly enough, flatter the liberal sensibilities of the researchers performing the experiments or collating the data. I doubt very much this is a coincidence. (But liberals do have an excuse for their biases: The Truth has a liberal bias, they will say, when cornered.)
I don't think that in this respect -- "openness" -- there is much of a difference between conservatives and liberals. I think the main difference is what each is open to. Liberals are open to foreign crap because they hate their own culture and therefore anything not of their culture is superior; sampling other cultures, untainted by the despised home culture, is therefore ennobling.
Conservatives tend to like their home culture and have the opposite take on things.
Liberals are not more "open" to "foreign" things or new experiences, I would contend-- they just define the foreign or new differently. Try getting a committed urban liberal to watch NASCAR once. Just once. He will refuse, and if he does try it, he will fill the air with snarky insults about the sort of people involved in racing and the sort of people who enjoy it. He will begin indulging in cultural stereotypes and insults that he'd be aghast at if directed at, say, the giant guitars of Peru.
Liberals like calling people "savages" just as much as 1920s xenophobes did. They just call different people "savages," and have learned the word "savage" is itself a catch-word among xenophobes, and they are definitely not by self-definition anything like a xenophobe. But that just means they avoid the word itself. They will employ any number of synonyms or ideation-equivalents to express the same disdain and distaste.
I don't really blame liberals for that, exactly, since I do something like that (watch how fast I turn off Spanish pop music); I blame them more for their hypocrisy and self-obliviousness-become-self-flattery -- that is, I blame them for not realizing they are, in fact, doing precisely what they curse and despise others for doing.
I keep noticing this sort of Disdain For the Barbarians effect coming up in cultural fights about something I could frankly give a shit about, food. Liberals have turned "organic" into an ersatz religion, critical to their sense of place in the world, crucial for differentiating themselves from the savages beneath them. Conservatives rely on more traditional modes of self-identity -- religion, patriotism, family -- and are less prone to fetishize a dietary selection, but they do it too: Witness how the words "arugula" and "latte" are used on the right.
You are what you eat, the saying goes. And if others eat a low diet, then it stands to reason they must themselves be low; or if they eat an unserious, effete diet, they themselves must be unserious and effete.
In two recent cases of food-fighting, Sarah Palin was, no big surprise, at or near the center of the storm. I find the responses of liberals to her very telling.
First, Palin weighed in on typical nannystate crap on health in school lunches. Forbidding candy vending machines and also, it seems, school cookie bake-sales. Unhealthy, you know. She tweeted, basically, Let Them Eat Cookies.
One part about culture I haven't gotten into yet is cultural dominance and cultural presumptiveness. This causes a lot of conservative reaction (or over-reaction, to some minds) to stuff like this. This is the Who The Hell Do You Think You Are? effect. People get their hackles up at being lectured or dictated to as if they were children by people who presume to be their superiors. The person doing the lecturing and hectoring may claim to not be putting themselves over their target as if they were their superior, but in fact, in life, there are only a few people who do in fact get to treat us in such a paternalistic fashion -- our parents, most importantly, especially when we're kids. Our bosses -- who are often called our "superiors," at least in the business heirarchy.
So if you're instructing me, unsolicited, with advice (or dictates about my behavior), as if I were a child and you are my parent, how the hell am I supposed to take that?
This gets a lot of conservatives pretty pissy about liberal nagging. It's not that the advice offered is always bad. It's just -- Who the Hell Do You Think You Are to be telling me how to live my life, buddy? Surely you must think you are higher on the food chain, because privates don't go lecturing lieutenants, and lieutenants don't lecture generals.
So if you are intruding into my life, telling me how to live it-- you must, by necessity, believe you are in some kind of paternalistic relationship with me, I your subordinate and inferior, you my superior.
And if you do think that -- kindly fuck off please, and with all due haste.
Liberals get very pissy about conservatives doing stuff they think is similar -- especially stuff about sex or God. Liberals don't notice they're doing the same thing. (I'd say conservatives also don't notice they're doing the same thing, except they actually do realize this at higher rates, possibly because the media is always pushing back against them, and have adopted a bit more of the live and let live libertarian philosophy.)
Now, after Sarah Palin sounded off, asking the government Who the Hell Do You Think You Are? (always a good question to ask of government), liberals of course (predictably) freaked out. Here's an unfine example.
It's bad enough that President Obama is nationalizing our health care -- that he's leading the economy to socialist ruin -- and generally seeking vengeance against the white man on behalf of his African ancestors. But now his bossy wife and her government minions want to tell you what to eat. Just like your mother when she said you couldn't have dessert until you'd finished your peas. Except more sinister. Way more sinister.
This is the latest paranoid fantasy being hatched by my compadres on the right: that, in an effort to fight rising and dangerous levels of obesity amongst Americans, Big Mother is going to come into your homes, snatch that breakfast soda out of your pudgy hands, and force feed you a fresh carrot from the White House garden.
As Rush Limbaugh warned his listeners on Nov. 9:
Anyway, Michelle Obama's on this big obesity kick, right? Gotta eat healthy stuff, gotta eat the garbage that she grows in the garden, nothing but fruits and vegetables...Michelle Obama wants to spend $400 million to combat food deserts. She's all upset that the only food available to poor urban people are convenience stores, the 7-Elevens. What did Biden say, you can't go in one without finding an Indian? Yeah, that's what Joe Bite Me said. So she's complaining about food deserts, and Michelle Obama wants to punish Big Food and Big Retail for not putting quality food stores in poor neighborhoods, right? And that's why there's an obesity epidemic, right? And Big Mother ain't stopping there. She's going after your children, too. She wants to undermine your parental authority and tell them what to eat: no more greasy pizza slices, deep-fried processed chicken parts, transfat-injected "cake" substances, and high-fructose soft drinks in their school cafeterias.
It rambles on like this, in this kind of exhausting manner. Her basic point is that this is super-duper good advice, so that of course the smart people in the government, informed by the very smart liberal people who elected them into government, should now begin dictating to inferior parents how to properly raise their children.
She doesn't use those words. She doesn't have to. It's pretty clear that she's is Very Concerend Indeed about all those adults who do not have the benefit of her enlightened wisdom, and she seeks to inflict this wisdom on them, by force of law, if that's what it takes.
To her, these would-be laws are perfectly sound guidance offered from Those Who Are Good At Thinking to Those Who Are Good At Doing Things But Not Thinking So Much, and the latter (troglodytes, thralls, sub-creatures, and assorted dirty-handed laborers) should be happy to be the recipients of so much love and care.
She completely misses the entire How Dare You Presume angle, because she's the one doing the presuming.
Contrast this to Sarah Palin's own utterance about what's good to eat -- and the inversion that happens, as Maureen Dowd loses her shit over it.
The doomed caribou gazed calmly across the Alaska tundra at Caribou Barbie. The female caribou could easily have escaped, since it took the Wasilla huntress six shots, two rifles and some help from her dad to bag her prey. (Giving credence to Levi JohnstonÂ’s contention that she isnÂ’t all that proficient with guns.)
But, inexplicably, the caribou just waited to get gunned down by Sarah Palin, who came across less like a pioneer woman than Private Benjamin with her camo, her French manicured nails, her cap that says (in pink) Girls And Guns, her 72-year-old father and her TLC reality show crew.
Sarah checked her freezer at home before she flew 600 miles to the Arctic, trying to justify her contention that she needs to hunt to eat. WasnÂ’t it already stocked with those halibuts she clubbed and gutted in an earlier show?
“My dad has taught me that if you want to have wild, organic, healthy food,” she pontificated, “you’re gonna go out there and hunt yourself and fish yourself and you’re gonna fill up your freezer.”
Does Palin really think the average housewife in Ohio who canÂ’t pay her bills is going to load up on ammo, board two different planes, camp out for two nights with a film crew and shoot a caribou so she can feed her family organic food?
ItÂ’s amazing that Palin patronized Neiman Marcus during the campaign. CouldnÂ’t she have spun cloth to sew her own clothes?
Hunting seems more sporting with birds — at least they have a better chance to get away. Unless the hunter is Dick Cheney, who would shoot pheasants that were pen-raised and released from a net to make slaughtering them easier.
The poor caribou in the Arctic Circle, a cousin to SantaÂ’s reindeer, had to die so Palin could show off her toughness to voters and try to boost ratings on her show that have slipped since its premiere. (Next Sunday, sheÂ’s dragging up nine Gosselins to go shooting and camping.)
SarahÂ’s view of America is primitive. YouÂ’re either a pointy-headed graduate of Harvard Law School or youÂ’re eviscerating animals for fun, which she presents as somehow more authentic.
In movies with animals, they often have a line in the credits assuring that no animals were harmed. In “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” they should have a line at the end assuring that “almost every living creature involved in this show was harmed.”
There are a couple of things going on here -- typical Palin hate, typical Palin-mention hit-whoring, and the much-noted tendency of those who are in fact entirely separated from The Land to aesthetize the land into some sort of cartoony abstraction and react with enlightened revulsion towards those who are so low as to use The Land for its intended purposes. In Dowd's world, the great unspoiled wilderness exists primarily for purposes of National Geographic photo-essays. Those who actually go out into The Land for traditional purposes are just low. And icky.
But that's not why I'm linking this. I'm quoting that to point out the inversion of liberal attitudes here about platitudes about food. When a liberal offers a platitude about food, they are shocked that anyone could be even the slightest bit annoyed at the presumptiveness of telling another adult to eat his vegetables. They cannot believe the depths of ingratitude here -- all we were trying to do is help you with some paternalistic advice; how can you get so angry about that?
But here Palin offers Maureen Dowd -- well, her and other liberals -- some good, not-really-all-that-controversial advice about eating organic. See? Now, Palin is offering the liberals some advice, and the advice is pretty inarguable -- it is hard to dispute that a wild caribou is entirely, indisputably, and wholly organic; indeed, until the hunter's killing shot is fired, it has grown and lived and ate and mated without any interference by humans whatsoever. (Unlike the tomatoes or steaks you buy at Whole Foods.)
So, that's all she's saying: There's organic, and then there's really organic, and food you yourself hunt or fish falls into the latter category. Whole Foods tomatoes? Not so much.
You can't argue with that, really. It's just... good advice.
But notice how Maureen Dowd freaks out in anger about it. She sputters: Are you suggesting that women (such as myself?!) must go out and hunt our food? Are you saying that we cannot be truly organic unless we do? Are you suggesting we cannot be truly alive and well-rounded people unless we do?
How dare you, Woman, presume to tell me about how to live my life! Just Who In The Hell Do You Think You Are?
Maureen Dowd had a sense of self, and an idea about Proper Culture. And Proper Culture, food-wise, meant eating locally-grown vegetables and buyin' stuff from Whole Foods.
Sarah Palin walked in and challenged her sense of self -- implied, without saying so, that Dowd was living a less-than-perfect life, or at least one with gaps, and therefore was deficient in some aspect of her dietary culture -- and Maureen Dowd freaked out over it.
But contrast Dowd's reaction to Palin's small-beans cultural imposition with liberals' reaction to Palin's reaction to their own cultural impositions -- liberals instruct us to just take the good, wise advice they offer, without calling foul or asking them Who In The Hell They Think They Are?, but when the shoe's on the other food -- when a bit of good advice is sent their way -- they get irrationally angry about it.
Because in their world, it should be the Maureen Dowds and idiot writers on the Huffington Post who give paternalistic advice to the rough-hewn clods of Middle America. That, of course, is the natural order of things, in their thinking.
When Middle America offers some advice back to them... well. That's just not done, now is it?
And I circle back to the point I was making 12,000 words earlier -- but a liberal will tell you she's more "open" to different or foreign ways of doing things, whereas conservatives are all close-minded and xenophobic.

Not really a battle. The liberals outnumber us 10-1. And "the truth has a liberal bias" has been used many a time.

This is why it is such bullshit that social conservatives are the ones who want to impose their values on others.
Social cons, by and large, mind their own business. They only act-up when the Left is trying to force radical social change upon everyone else.

First point: To some, "The personal is political" is an living motto, not just a phrase. Why would you eat arugula or wild salmon just because you "liked it"? No, to these types, the ONLY reason to do so is to validate your worldview's superiority. I'm something of a foodie, and you'll be shocked how often people display disbelief about my political thoughts, simply based on the fact that I like what are probably considered "organic/green/trendy/etc." foods. Michelle Obama is passing legislation and directly stating that she wants to influence your behavior. If she wants to show off the White House garden, nobody's fussing, but it becomes a Biden F'ing Deal when she wants to force salad bars into every school.
Maureen Dowd is inferring a lot from Sarah Palin. First, she realizes that Sarah is needling the left about "organic food" saying that they're a bunch of poseurs. Which they are. Sarah isn't eating all of her food this way, picking wild berries and mushrooms, etc.
Second, it's Dowd's guilt which leads her to feel threatened. Even if you accept that Palin is an active politician rather than just a reality show host, there is no implied legislation here that would force every American to hunt their own food.
Oh, and it isn't a fair comparison because Maureen Dowd is batshit crazy.

About the "Scientists are Democrats" thing, it's easy to explain IMO. Look how science is funded. Countless man-hours are spent begging for money applying for grands and fellowships by just about everyone who wants to do research. Science is tremendously expensive. I have two degrees in the Earth Sciences, my wife has 4. Also, because the first thing any professor will tell you as an undergraduate is that when a Republican is President, we're just one Act of Congress away from burning all the smart people at the stake for heresy and establishing some sort of Cromwell-esque theocracy.

Those least able to afford health care disproportionately need it in large part because of the unhealthy food they eat -- and that is served to their children in government-run schools. We've arrived at a point where inner-city children can't identify common fresh vegetables and fruits, such as cauliflower, tomatoes, and potatoes.
Great. So I'm sure Crittenden will fully support any effort to do away with the ridiculous number of environmental, government and state-level regulations that make it difficult to maintain the types of farms that provide the organic food she wants kids to eat.
This so-called conservative doesn't address that point, of course, and probably didn't even bother researching it. I did some quick looking around. These laws have some impact upon the small farmer:
Safe Drinking Water Act
Clean Water Act
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act
Worker Protection Standards
Resource Conservation & Recovery Act
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act
Endangered Species Act
Toxic Substances Control Act
Clean Air Act
Emergency Planning & Community Right to Know
Coastal Zone Management Act
You want cheaper, more-readily available organic foods? Get rid of the laws that make it hard for people to start and operate the farms that grow them.

The issue with "Who Do You Think You Are" does not necessarily have anything to do with someone challenging our sense of self. It has much more to do with our inherent sense of self-sufficiency.
It's not that they're insulting our culture, it's that they're insulting us.
"You're too stupid to know you shouldn't live on a diet of Twinkies and Val-u-rite."
"You're too stupid to know what to do with your money."
"You're too stupid to [insert thing they want to make you do here]."
Maureen Dowd, on the other hand, is still just pissy because Sara Palin is more popular than she is.
You can tell the difference from the snark "Took her 6 shots..." Yes, Maureen, because we're all US Marine Snipers living by the "One Shot, One Kill" motto. Then there are the biting comments about the clothing.
When someone tells me that my local school can no longer have vending machines, I think "How stupid is that? This is what's important right now?" And that, I think, is what's behind Conservative opposition to the nanny state- beyond the fact we reject it in the first place. That is, every time you hear one of these stupid things (the incandescent light-bulb ban, or back when the regulated the number of gallons of water a toilet could use per flush, etc) don't you think, "Gee, I'm glad we don't have anything more pressing to worry about?"
On the other hand, when you tell a Liberal that "the only way to get truly organic meat is to kill it yourself" you're making them remember that they hate killing in all of its forms (which they've neatly decided doesn't apply to unborn children) and that for them to eat any meat at all means they're participating in that killing. And they don't actually like arugula or Swish shard any more than the rest of us- they just force themselves to do it anyway.

But God forbid someone shows them how that game actually gets on their plates. (Not to mention that it's a lot prettier than how their standard beef hamburger or chicken breast gets from the farm to their plates.)
Does anyone remember how in November 2008, Gov. Palin got all sorts of grief from making an appearance to pardon the State of Alaska's official turkey at a turkey farm -- and then gave a news interview to a local TV station in front of the killing barn at the turkey farm? People back then were outraged that she was so unfeeling as to give them a glimpse at how their Thanksgiving turkeys originated.

Liberals' platitudes about food remind me that C.S. Lewis considered this fastidiousness a form of gluttony:
"Because what she wants is smaller and less costly than what has been set before he, she never recognizes as gluttony her determination to get what she wants, however troublesome it may be to others. At the very moment of indulging her appetite she believes that she is practising temperance ...; in reality ... the particular shade of delicacy to which we have enslaved her is offended by the sight of more food than she happens to want."
[...]
Fastidious gluttony can appear in the form of an excessively picky eater. For example, one who demands that her fishball noodles not contain bean sprouts and sends it back to the cook when they do in fact contain bean sprouts. Or maybe he demands that the noodles all not be longer than a certain length.

Cultural snobbery is a weapon of the left, because it's so effective. Which is why folks like Palin drive them up the wall. She's using basically the same tactic against them, claiming that as she sees it, they are the ones who are behind the times.
The thing is, she's got a great point, the left embrace stale ideas. I'm working on understanding the liberal thought processes (no snarky remarks, they actually do have a conherient world view). The thing is as far as I can tell most of their ideas were hashed out some time ago, and there's no one that I can tell that is a fresh dynamic personality who is defining anything new for them, they are just following ideas of their predicessors (or their younger selves, in many cases). They have become so ossified they don't really know how to engage in debate, so they get a little upset when anyone challenges them as crassly as Palin does. They KNOW they are right, but they can't really put their finger on why, so they try personal attacks and shouting and all their dirtly little tricks.
I'm working on it, and soon I hope to be able to understand their moral compass a little better, so I can better predict their movements and attacks. Palin offers a wonderful study on their own mindsets, kind of like bear baiting lets you know what motivates a bear.

No. They hate yours. Theirs is a subset of not-yours.
Exotic/foreign/etc. is an obvious shortcut to probably-not-yours, so they presume in its favor, unless and until they're told that it's a corollary or extreme example of yours (e.g., "American Taliban") and can be held against you—and therefore, post hoc, rejected.
There are no weird self-negating psychological inversions involved. No one hates himself, as he truly defines himself. He hates you, and sometimes he calls you "us," so he can get away with doing something horrible to you.

On the foreign thing anthropologists (those people who's business it is to study cultures interacting) hae always said tha people always divide themselves up into "clans" of "us" that are separate from "them". The liberals are all gathered in different "clans". The Dowd clan are those that habitat the East side of the City and go to the latest and hippest parties and clubs. We all see them because the paparazzi make a living taking pictures of them getting out of cars with no underwear on.
As for the people like Moochelle telling us what to eat that is a different clan. That is the clan of people who love government and love to order other people to do what they want. Of course it is for their own benefit and good. They used to have a totem consisting of an ax and a bundle of wood. Their leader was named Mussolini until he decided (with a little help) to hang around in the poor districts with his girlfriend upside down.
Posted by: Vic at December 08, 2010 01:06 PM (e4sSD)
Because in their world, it should be the Maureen Dowds and idiot writers on the Huffington Post who give paternalistic advice to the rough-hewn clods of Middle America. That, of course, is the natural order of things, in their thinking.
When Middle America offers some advice back to them... well. That's just not done, now is it?
They have to believe they are part of the in-group. For them, there has to be an out-group. It's part of their identity. I think when conservatives throw it back at them, it's less that conservatives feel that they are in the in-group. I think they're pretty much aware they aren't, and that they're holding a mirror up to the liberals. (Geez, it's hard to write "liberals" without scare quotes.)
Also, I think they're more primitive, less live and let live. I think they're hyper--concerned on a deep, unconscious level with matters of survival via social gaming. They flock to big cities and end-up thinking alike. Others are forced through social pressure to conform and posture like them. People who do not are threats on a deep survival level for them and are osracized. Old reptilian habits die hard. Everyone has some of that, but liberals obviously let those R-complex urge call the shots more often. "You're not with-it (smart, beautiful, whatever). Like we are. You're not one of us." For every person you can relegate to the out-group, your chance of survival increases. (Or so your primitive, sub-conscious idea of survival tells you, that is.)
Nice post, Ace.

From my perspective, the liberal "openess" they trumpet is partly BS and partly willful ignorance.
Consider African tribal culture. You can get many a liberal to opine for their love of this particular culture. They will go on and on about how great it is to see people at peace with nature and not worrying about money. And then they will go back to their luxury SUV and drive it to their job where they are vying for a raise by pushing more paper then their coworkers. This is the BS part. They can talk about how superior this culture is, but given the choice they have no desire to directly experience it.
Now, this gets worse when you find out their understanding of the culture is based on Disney movies. I remember watching a movie in an anthro class where a girl from one of these tribes stumbles across a young elk (or related animal). She plays with it for a few minutes...and then kills it by bashing its head into a tree to bring it home to eat. My liberal classmates were appalled, apparently believing that "humane" methods of killing food animals are common throughout the third world...

Too many liberals think the Medievalist Jihadis are going to approve of their soft, pink underbellies. Some on the far-right like to be like the more extreme/bizarre militia groups (and no, I don't mean normal folks who understand their second amendment rights AND responsibilities as militia). Naturally, jihadis don't worry them near as much as ATF agents.
At this time in the civilized world, the pink underbellies crowd is running things. That's why we have a problem with jihadis, and it's why Assange is still breathing.

Actually, while Huckabee may want us all to have to give up SUVs and Smoking, and whatever else, the difference (with the exception of smoking- and its not like he's alone there, Left or Right) is that he doesn't think it should be legislated. He just thinks people should be convinced to give up all the things he thinks are bad.
That's the thing: I don't think people should drink (jokes on this blog notwithstanding). I don't think people should smoke. I think everyone should be in Church on Sunday morning. I don't think any level of government should legislate those issues at all.
Most Christian Conservatives (and, yes, there will always be the vocal minority) really just want what 1st Century Christians wanted: to be left alone to worship as we want. We don't really want the government interfering with that, or with any other part of our lives. We know we can regulate ourselves much better than the government could ever hope.

Damn right - the Left does have this cartoony, naive view of The Land, especially when it comes to organic farming. Ironic that Dud talks about this in her piece:
Does Palin really think the average housewife in Ohio who canÂ’t pay her bills is going to load up on ammo, board two different planes, camp out for two nights with a film crew and shoot a caribou so she can feed her family organic food?
Ironic because organic food, on average, is approximately 50% more expensive on average than its non-organic counterpart. And btw, sometimes foods labeled "organic" on the shelves aren't so "organic" after all - some companies use tricks to label their non-organic goods "organic" to induce more people to buy them and to arbitrarily increase the price.
Maybe some of these left-tards that advocate organic on a large scale should try to work on a farm for several days. Farming, as the idyllic job the libs think of it, is brutal and back-breaking work, which is why only 3 or 4% of the US population as a whole do it for a living, and most of them use modern farming techniques.

The whole notion of paying more for their organic food plays in with the indulgence theory you have raised before. The store isn't bad in the moral or legal since, but it is bad in a financial one. And, it reeks of douchebaggery on an epic scale.
Remember, morons, eating organic and/or non-factory foods is more expensive because of the marketplace. If you can't afford it, that's fine and nothing to be ashamed of. Honest work and honest food are things with inherent dignity.
Not wanting to eat a de-beaked chicken raised in filth and pumped full of hormones isn't a bad thing. Nor is wanting to eat an elk you put a bullet through yourself. It's not irreconcilable, and it's not bad. Whole Foods (or New Seasons, as the case may be) is a good store that allows choice in the market. There's nothing morally grand about shopping there, and there's nothing morally deficient about hitting the Bi-mart or Walmart for groceries.
i will say that getting your kids a diet of food exclusively of the highly processed and be-chemicalled variety can't be good for them or you, and maybe a bit more effort is required. But that's a physical matter, not a moral failing.
It's like Goldberg once wrote: There is a plethora of house-smelly-goody products out there because women don't stay home and clean any more. So the house stinks.
That's a fact, but he got reams of hatemail from defensive, insecure women who objected that they JUST DIDN'T HAVE TIME. As if they have to justify being slobs. Own it. Be it. Women are fiercely defenseive any time you question even one little bit of their competence in what they think it means to be a woman. And usually one's view is in direct contradiction to another's. Hence, bitchy spats.
Oh, and one more thing, MoDo hasn't seen a piece of raw meat since she had that issue with the carpaccio about 2 years ago.

The conservative "bedroom" issues are foundational blocks for the maintenance of a workable society. Human biochemistry has some decidedly illogical aspects when it comes to relationships generally and sex specifically. So-cons like order in these arrangements because guides like, say, the Ten Commandments are, in fact, a pretty good tool in avoiding the complications of the aforementioned biochemistry. That kind of organizational underpinning should be a big meta-priority for cultures. It's a "must have."
One step down from this cultural strata is the abortions issue. The greatest challenge abortion rights activists hurl at pro-life advocates is that many are inconsistent since conservatives are generally in favor of capital punishment, too. Voila!!! Logical inconsistency. It's not even close. The respect for life of the abortion foe (no, not the clinic bomber) can logically be reconciled with the demands of a society for responsibility and accountability of its adults through a criminal code. Those are two more big ticket cultural items. I challenge the abortion rights folks to pull the reverse logic together--their logic rests on two pillars that societies can't tolerate in the long run: contempt for the humanity of the unborn and freedom of consequences for bad choices. (Yes, I believe abortion for rape and incest is a different issue because there was no choice.)
As most of the regulars here know, I'm ambivalent about most gay rights issues, but all you women's studies yo-yos know that your view whistles past the graveyard you create for the whole biochemistry issue, which was not, is not and never will be a construct of the oppressive patriarchy. A society of enlightened lesbians would be just as petty and spiteful as the fraternity community at Big State U. I've never met a Vulcan, so quite pretending that we are equipped to act like them. (Star Trek nerds, please feel free to point out the quaint mating practices of Spock and company.)
Leftists, whether they be of the cultural, economic or all-encompassing Jerry Effing Brown variety ignore the big thing and focus on the margins. Rather than talk about what underpins a healthy-as-possible society, they pick at things like "hate speech," which they conveniently subjectively and elastically define; as Ace points out they nanny us about food in such an insulting way that I make it a point to visit a McDonald's regularly "just because; they exacerbate differences under the heading of "diversity" and ignore the inevitable human conflict of all kinds that ensues.
Most tellingly to me, they insist on blaming the wealthy for the evils of poverty instead of stumbling across the ultimate economic truths: Wealth is finite. The unreachable goal of every government should be to get to a point where the numerator of national wealth is so big that it overpowers the denominator and effectively renders it zero. No, we'll never get there, but that is the policy. Leftists have this part perfectly backwards.
They're just not very good at that whole reality thing they lecture us about.

Facts just get in the way. They don't need facts, they need snipits that they can warp and spin into what they're trying to say. Facts be damned.
Case in point, earlier it was mentioned that her father tested the gun and realized that the scope was way off. Where the dedicated hunter would've figured that out and switched guns after 2 shots, Sarah wasn't a poor shot as reported. But, since that didn't fit the narrative, it was omitted.
The media in this country is loosing its ass and it has no idea why. I just laugh.
Back when I was in college, my Political Science prof made me use the NYT for current events each week. I thought it was the worst written piece of trash I'd ever read and couldn't believe that is was a highly regarded news source. And this was back in the EARLY 90's. Wonderful essay. As a cooking show junkie I can pretty much recite all the organic/local/slow food bullshit by heart. I laughed out loud at Palin's mention of "organic" because she obviously has no idea what "organic" really means. It means making a living selling over priced fruits, vegetables, and "proteins" to restaurants that then make more money by overcharging their hapless, clueless customers.
As for the bake sale controversy? The cynic in me says it has nothing to do with childhood obesity or the nanny state. School fundraising is big business. My kid is out of school now, but every year she brought home a beautiful glossy brochure with all kinds of products the school expected us to sell to raise funds for the school. My guess is that any school district that uses the new law to stop bake sales will do so based on who will gain financially. Probably someone's brother-in-law.

It is simply part of Alaskan culture to bag your food for the winter. I have friends who grew up there and still live there, and they would always tell me about their fall hunts - well, we bagged a moose today, so we have meat for the winter stocked in the freezer. It's just how they roll. Maureen Dowd can't possibly accept that. No, a woman in Iowa isn't necessarily going to be able to do that, but neither can Alaskans just run out to Whole Foods in the middle of the winter to nab some organic yogurt. You stock your freezer; it's just done.
And frankly, as someone from a state FULL of wild turkeys, I'd really love a fresh bird myself, but our gun laws are so prohibitive that it's really, really, really hard to do that.
I do hate racing cars, though - I think it has more to do with being a girl than it does with any cultural bias. I have nothing against rednecks; I come from proud rednecks, so there you go.

Chuck is old and his daughter Sarah is wrong (or at least, still his little girl, at least when they're out hunting). So it's unsurprising that she'd let him tell her to keep firing after the second miss -- because obviously his little girl still needed to settle.
Which is why even after she nailed the caribou with her first shot from the other rifle, Chuck still needed to prove that there was nothing wrong with her own rifle. Surprise, surprise: there was.
So rather than being an incompetent markswoman, I'd say Sarah is a dutiful and respectful daughter.

This all has to do with Unions. We had a huge dust-up over what some Central Ohio schools were allowed to sell/not sell last year (no bake sales, car washes, etc.). It finally came out that the schools were only allowed to sell shit that was made in an unionized plant. Turns out the teachers union beat the gov't to this 'control' by putting it in their damn contracts. Since this became common knowledge, nearly ever school levy (ours school taxes are still attached to property owners...apparently people that live in apartments don't have school aged children) has failed around here.

Part of it, I'm sure, was the alcohol- She wanted a Crown & Coke but had to settle for Jack & Coke, and I'm sure they got the cheapest Jack available. But still... yech. Even wine smells horrible to me.

Thinking too much again. You are trying to create a moral equivalence between Left and Right that does not exist. Leftist hate the things the Right does because the Right does them. They don't dislike the Right because of what they do. Sarah Palin isn't bad because she hunts, hunting is bad because Sarah Palin does it. What was the Left's reaction to John Kerry shooting geese?
Whereas on the Right, we tend to dislike what they do. For example, I am not going to suddenly say, hey, banging a dude in the ass is cool just because Ann Coulter went to GOProud.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at December 08, 2010 05:23 PM (c0A3e)
My older sister is an average housewife in Ohio. Her husband hunts deer and geese and they eat them. Last time I was there they had 8 buck heads mounted in the living room - the joke was that Alan was gunning for Rudolph the next year.
You don't have to travel thousands of miles for game. It exists all over. You can bow-hunt deer in the parks inside the Chicago city limits.

I think it's more basic than that, Beck. A conservative speaks and acts according to his conscience and wants others to do the same. Conservatives want to live their lives and want others to live theirs.
You're dead-on right regarding the principle; the details don't really matter much.

The post is long, but genius.
Couple of points:
1) People always think other people are just like them. Because of this, liberals always assume that they are one law away from being sent to gas chambers if the Republicans take power, since, well, it is what they would do to us if they could get away with it.
2) Natural food like caribou is all well and dandy...unless you are the caribou.

Besides her rank liberalism, I think I see another reason she's Hannity's ex-producer.

Robin Hanson and Tyler Cowen have written a lot about this type of stuff. Hanson's big insight is that a lot of politics is about status. We want to see groups we like and identify with raised up in status, and we want to see groups we dislike lowered in status.
All the speechifying and verbal fog thrown up to justify opinions to ourselves and others is in many ways meaningless.
Everything is status. We are designed to crave it. We can't escape it.

I'm also saddened that Miller/Coors is one of the few national beer brands that is still an American company. So I can drink a Blue Moon now and then (made by Miller/Coors). People like this, and I include Aaron "hunting is bad but I eat meat" Sorkin in their number, don't seem to realize that every time they order the steak, they have just contributed to the death of the animal that provided it.
Sure, Sorkin may not have killed the animal himself, but in eating that steak, he created the economic need that necessitated the animal's death. Heck, the animal killed by a hunter probably had a better life and a more humane death than the one whose cooked flesh he orders at a restaurant.

I think it's a bit of both. Perhaps it's the type of woman who mad different choices in her life than SP did and has not taken responsibility for the resultant unhappiness. Instead of doing that, it's easier to hate the woman and all of her works, which includes her children.
Related: a while back, Ace speculated that SP's existence drove Andrew Sullivan into a permanent state of psychosis because she may have nudged whatever vestige of heterosexuality that may have still been (barely) breathing--making him aware of the road not taken. It was a brilliant peace of arm-chair psychoanalysis, if you'll pardon the pun.

I think most Liberals have forgotten the fact that, with a very few climatological exceptions, the cow would be extinct (well, 'endangered,' anyway) if it weren't so tasty. Deer provide better leather, goats provide better milk (I'm told, I've never had any), and sheep (which tend to share the same environmental needs as cows) actually bite grass so far down that cows can't eat it.
They exist as domesticated animals only because they're really, really tasty.

They are kind of cute actually, the Caribbean ones, anyway.
Anytime you get bored and all your divers are safely occupied exploring the fucking sand around a coral head, go up to the wall and look for some antennae.
If you can hold very still, it's kind of easy to pet them out of their hidey holes.
I always pretended I was coaxing a kitteh cat out of a tree.
I don't know what it is but if you gently stroke their feelers the right way, they will get curious or something and poke their head out.
Keep going, petting their antennae down to the base and they will actually lose their death grip that their tails normally hold onto in their hidey holes.
I don't know what it is! Some sort of stimulus / response loop hat I can short-circuit? Like hypnotizing chickens?
All I know is, every time I did that to a lobster, I told him to be glad I wasn't hungry!
(Not like harvesting was legal or anything. Hell, wearing dive gloves was a big No- No in this World ecological "protected" site!)
But I thought about it!

Wolves really are the Zombies of our world aren't they?
Just 'cause they look like the cute puppehs that are a part of our families, doesn't make it so.
Watch their behavior!
Wolves are predators plain and simple!
We should start shooting them from helicopters, evil predatory bastards that they are!
That and the coyotes.
I'm pretty sure that coyotes are not the kind of apex predator that wolves are but still, I just don't fucking respect them!
Noisy, yippy little bastards.
(One on one? Sure, I'll be wary and practice all due caution when chancing on any wild animal!)

Sorkin also accused the Fox News contributor of making a "snuff film" after the latest episode of Sarah's Palin's Alaska featured the politician going hunting with her father and shooting a caribou.
Sometimes I wonder if liberals really don't understand that everything they eat used to be alive - even for the strictest of vegans...

I dare him to spend a day on a factory farm or a slaughter house and have the nerve to say that the caribou didn't have the preferable life and death.
People have gotten so out of touch with the reality of where their food comes from (in all it's sometimes awful and miserable stages) that it's beyond pitiful.

Couple of years ago I was at a lefty "destination" wedding. I was already showing my ass by leaving the rest of my family home and coming only myself with alot of smugness. Because they had already gotten married in a courthouse and then were having a "pretend" ceremony to avoid any smattering of religion, I kept referring to it as "the thing on the beach." It was truely awful and had me on serious edge. Anyway, that night, one of the guests cornered me and wanted me to admit that the "Chinese had done a wonderful, an amazing, a fantastic job on the Olympics." Already in my "let's just nuke the left" mood, I responded with, "Are you fucking kidding me?" "How much of a fucking lefttard do you have to be even have that thought?" "What the hell is wrong with you, did you drop acid every day in the seventies?"
That's what Ace's essay reminded me of. That and the fact I don't get enough foreplay.

On lobsters ... I've always been horrified by them. They really do look like a giant red cockroach to me. When I see one my instinct is to get a bat and just smash it till it goes away. It's like a real life Temple of Doom dinner.
Cracked.com had a funny article a few months ago (I'd link to it, but that's apparently verboten on this site) about this. Apparently before the 20th century lobster was at the bottom of the food chain, down there with tripe and below liver.
Remember in our history books how the colonists in the Revolutionary War mocked the British soldiers by calling them lobsterbacks? Well, the British got their revenge serving their POWs nothing but lobster -- to the point some prisoners revolted, preferring death to eating lobster one more day.

Make a deal with her. If she'll read Sarah's books, you'll do something for her that she wants...but only after she reads the books.
And, if she comes at you with the idea that Sarah didn't write those books, just let her know that the first book is based on all her written journals throughout her life.

do ya know where it comes from???
For decades, I've been under the impression that Jello comes from grinding up the feet of pretty little moo-cows.
Kind of distressed me when I first heard this, as a 12 year old.
Luckily, I had a patient parent who explained that not only do the feet of pretty little moo-cows get ground up and made into Jello but other parts of her will be part of a a Big Mac or a kick-ass leather coat someday...
Don't you like those sorts of things?
Well, sure! Who doesn't?
That's what happens to cows, daughter.
All of them? All the time?
Pretty much, yes.
Just so long as they aren't cutting the feet of of cows just to make Jello, I suppose it's OK...
Hooves dear. Cows don't have feet. They have hooves.
Kind of simplistic? Sure! But it stopped my weeping.
(Still never ate any Jello since that conversation!)

OK, so I guess you don't want to know that it comes from the boiled bones, connective tissue and hides of the various critters (piggies, sheepies, cowies, goaties) in the slaughterhouse that week.

Powdered gelatin, in a packet, is kind of amazing, if you think about it.
Jello?
Not that great.
Fascinating properties for the budding kitchen chemist to observe.
But a tasty treat?
Not so much.
I defy anyone to name me a time when they woke up from a deep sleep and had craving for fucking Jello!
I imagine that Jello got popular just as fast as refrigerators did. It was a way to show off to the neighbors that you could afford a fridge.
I have a copy of "The Joy of Cooking" penned sometime in the early 30's that has entire sections devoted to "aspics".
Apparently, "suspending" all kinds of random shit in gelatin was considered the height of sophistication at some point in American culture!
I'm not dissing true charcuterie or even terrines.
I ain't really against gelatin, to be honest.
Still won't eat any Jello though...

Well said, Ace; but I think you're doing too much of the moral equivalence. In the fact the situation is:
* Sarah Palin (and others on the right) from time to time offers liberals advice on eating organic. Advice they can take or leave, as they will.
* Maureen Dowd (and others on the left) enlist the government to shove their advice down our throats, whether we like it or not. And tax us for the privilege, as well.
These positions may come from the same emotional impulse. But Palin's position is morally defensible. Dowd's is not.

Liberal elitists are like the 'cool kids' in school. They're cool because they say so and sheeple believe it. If you challenge their alpha status they turn into Mr. Hyde on you. You must be dragged down and 'killed' before the sheeple start thinking that maybe the cool kids really aren't.
Thus the visceral reaction by assclowns like Dowd and the other 'cool kids' to a real woman like Palin, or Coulter, etc. It's not cool to NOT be avant garde. It's not cool to have babies and raise them yourself. And... if you're not cool, then who will tell you how great and marvelous you are...?? OMG, maybe you're just one more schlub living your unimportant (to the fate of the universe) life.
When you ARE the universe because you have to concept of a higher value outside of yourself, you are doomed to this sort of insanity. You will die alone. ha ha.

- The post of the year. A veritable year in review; It explains the Obama administration to the mid-term elections, and this lame-duck session.
- Oh yeah? I'll see your shirtless Putin on a mongrel pony and raise you Palin taking out Donner or Blitzen.
- Or how can Middle America offer any advice about food (or culture) since all of the people who appreciate such matters had to leave? Seriously, if Middle America weren't such homophobes, they might take our Elite Coasts advice and learn something new or learn to like it. HLBTs are in power now. We're here, we're queer, and we're in charge because we bundle our political donations! Ask Kevin Jennings, Obama's Safe Schools Czar. /sarc
It is the height of tolerance that American parents indulge their children so; from designer sneakers, electronic gadgets to reality TV contestants. The Bravo! channel (NBC owned, and long gone from the days of showing opera) has acquiesced that culture is flaming gay and so must we all. Their reality game cooking show, Top Chef, disproportionately casts HLBT contestants over what is representative in the industry according to their top judge and restauranter Tom Colicchio. Not that Tom has a problem with that since he supports same sex marriage (and Michelle Obama's taxpayer money grab to dictate what children eat).
There was nothing so illustrative of the tribal mentality that has engulfed food in America than the Top Chef spin off show, Just Desserts. In the enaugural season, in addition to the usual dominance of HLBT contestants, they also cast someone who was clearly autistic. He couldn't cope. Team Diva, as the HLBTs called themselves, spear headed the tribal effort to ostracize him. Further down the road, Team Diva took to defiantly calling the only remaining heterosexual male, Morgan, left in the competition a name he openly despised; Morganza. How tribal, again.
But what could be more appropos of children running the asylum than when flaming Team Diva member Zac tried to throw Morgan under the bus at the Judge's Table:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iDka6iGJsQ&NR=1
ZAC: I'm just gonna say it. You know. It upsets me that Morgan won $20,000 in the chocolate fashion challenge. Couldn't care less (indicating no facial expression). Won the Godiva challenge. Couldn't care less (again, indicating no facial expression).
MORGAN: It's not part of my character to jump up and down and flail and sing show tunes. I don't think it's polite to go, "Ha ha I won!" (indicating all in your face glee). I would rather remain composed than freak out like a little girl.
Back in the Stew Room while the judges deliberate, Zac offered this bit of intolerant tribal wisdom to adult male Morgan:
ZAC: It's personality. It's not personal. You know.
Like, oh yeah, we do get it just how indulgent the adults have been when HLBTs go tribal and stress affirmative action, Jersey Shore type TV is good, nay even better, than meritocracy. You're looking for cheerleaders not competition. Your tribe is closed but you consider Middle America the closed-minded ones.
