Four Years of Nothing (But Taxes)
— Dave in Texas

This urgent thing that must be done now, must be done for some other reason than actually helping Americans with their health care. (chart via table 2 of today's CBO report, courtesy Geoff).

uninsured-per-year [].gif

the dramatic improvement of healthcare for Americans

We're clued into this but most of the middle are not, so it bears repeating. There will be no improvement in health care coverage for Americans for four years after this piece of crap passes. What will happen for four years?

Taxes. Taxes, and businesses working and adjusting to figure out how these things affect the bottom line, and of course where taxes and operating expense crossover.

So there is an immediate impact. Just no immediate improvement. Ok actually no long term improvement either but I'm playing on their turf with this argument to make a point.

So Natoma Canfield will have to rely on the current system, given the calendar and all. Fortunately for her, the current system is working to take care of her, and I wish her all the best in her fight.

Think about that in the context of the woeful anecdotes and ask "uhm, if they kinda cared about these awful things, wouldn't this be sort of geared toward helping make a difference for them?"

Answer your own question. Which is very efficient.

Also, I think Gabe mentioned this earlier, Obama has postponed his trip to Indonesia and Australia while this thing works its magic in the House.

Until June.

UPDATE: Obamacare in fifteen seconds.

16 Few have mentioned what this health care bill really is, at least in the short term. And that is a revenue generator for the Feds. Put another way, it allows them to pass the largest tax increase in American history in one fell swoop under the guise of using the funds for future health care benefits. Anyone who thinks that the revenue collected now will go toward health care subsidies in the future is nuts. And make no mistake, there is a reason that Obama has come out and said that UE will remain "elevated" for some time. That's because this crap will do nothing but cause business owners (and potential investors) to go (and stay) underground. No one in their right mind is expanding into new markets, taking on unnecessary risk or otherwise going out on a limb in this environment. For many businesses, just remaining a going concern is the top priority for now, forget about growth. And how increased taxation/regulation will somehow spur demand is beyond me. Dark times folks, dark times.

26 The fact that nothing kicks in for 4 years will not make the bill less popular, unless you think that the changes, once they come, will actually be popular.

Instead, in 2012, you'll have Obama saying "See, I told you that if you like your health care, you could keep it!  It's just the fear-mongering Republicans who told you this fix would destroy health care."

And "See, Sarah Palin promised Death Panels.  Where are the Death Panels?"

By the time the real stink kicks in (and the real stink isn't the cost -- that's just the little stink), it will safely be 2015, and by the time the rationing has to get going, it will be 2020, and no one will even remember what private insurance really was, anymore.

29 7 Think unemployment is bad now? How high will it go? Posted by: Timbo at March 18, 2010 07:31 PM (7GgDy) --------------------------------------------- 10% seems to be the break point for this administration and they'll work and fudge to keep it just below or around that number. The greater danger that I see is some external event that puts some unforeseen pressures on the market. Like say an attack on Iran from Isreal, China's economy taking a hit, one of the PIIGs being rendered insolvent, etc. Or it could be just a slow burn of several years at 10% UE that finally grinds us into the ground. One thing I will say is that we'll probably never see UE like we had during Reagan, Clinton or GWB again, ever. Not if our economy is built on public employment, which is what will happen is we go to a single payer system.

I know some small business owners that will start letting some full and part-timers go when (if) this crap sandwich passes.  These folks operate with very small profit margins, and the new Obamacare mandates will all but eat away those profits, and maybe drive them into the red.  So, to stay viable, they will reduce their staffs.  And that's going to happen all over America.  I can also imagine that larger companies will pack up and go overseas to avoid the expense caused by more regulation.  If this monstrosity passes over the weekend, we'll probably start seeing layoffs right away, and May's unemployment numbers will be a disaster.

It's a trick.  Here is how it will work.

Private loans will end.  The new public plan will create one of the largest banks in the country.  Students will apply for loans.  The plan will grant those loans with conditions that call students to work in "public service" areas approved by the government.  The areas the government will approve are community health centers(in the senate bill), hospitals(in the senate bill), and assisted living centers(in the Senate bill).

In effect, a student will receive a loan in exchange for volunteer work they put it taking care of people that are subsidized by Obamacare.

Like Obamacare, the new student loan system won't address the cost inflation concerns.  It will merely kick them down the road until there is no way back from ruin.

The structure is designed to weaken states that are already weak as predictably strong states aren't just going to stop being strong.  They were merely get stronger as they attract more productive human capital that subsidizes the states that are unproductive.  The progressives will then lean on the strong states to argue that a divided nation cannot stand to allow its weaker parts fall into harms way.

Allaying a lingering concern about immigration issues in the health-care battle, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus announced its unanimous support for President Obama's key domestic agenda initiative.

The decision knocks down another potential roadblock to reaching the necessary 216 votes for final passage...

Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.), with more than 20 CHC members behind her, told reporters the broader impact of the legislation overrode the other concerns. She said 8.8 million Latinos would gain insurance coverage in the legislation, a "historic opportunity" not to be missed.

I think that you'll see immediate changes implemented within 90 days of passage of the bill.  One thing that's almost certain is a steep hike in premiums as they plan for community rating and guaranteed issue.  Another thing to watch for is how many physicians declare no more Medicare patients.  That is until the Feds force them to take to, which will come in time.  Another feature that will come are doctors taking cash only, until they outlaw that of course.  The more that I think of the implementation of this the more it looks likes a slow motion clusterfark that doesn't end well.

It isn't only that we are shunting this off on our children.  It's that we are stealing any opportunity that many of them might have to succeed to the extent that those opportunities were extended to us by our parents.

Our children will have every right to despise our memories.

I've read about 20 pages so far and based on my reading there will be tons of grant money for "studies" of various things and getting a degree and subsequent job in any health care related field, no matter how tangential, will guarantee not only your education is paid, but a well paying job with the government too.

The parts I've read so far are so supremely Orwellian as to be almost farce.

They probably think that they are going to import doctors.  Ergo they have to teach them about American culture and traditions and the language.   Ever since I realized how cheap life is in some countries and how the doctors have absolutely no qualms letting someone die I avoid those people.   My doctor friends say I'm right.

Been wondering about this.  If you are employed your employer pays the fine for not providing insurance and then you pay the fine again for not buying insurance on your own....So, like with your savings, the government gets paid twice.

Bush passed a bill using the same procedure. Ironically Pelosi and a few other wackadoodles filed cert to overturn that bill and that lawsuit was tossed.

There's not as much precedent that way so perhaps there is a chance.

Pretty soon the only approved "medical device" for Americans with serious illness will be the lead pill - administered in .38 caliber doses to the back of the head by the local constabulary.  I've read plenty about the medical system in England, which Canada will soon emulate, and you might just as well pray for a swift death if you suffer any major sickness.  It would be far more merciful.

So, we may soon have a "government" (more like a mafia-like collection of criminal scum) who violate the supreme law of the land in order to create a system that steals your wealth while accellerating your death.  At what point can we say that it no longer has a legitimate claim to rule?  When our children are taken away and made wards of the state in re-education camps, or when our parents are gassed for being "useless eaters?"

I used to think that the liberal-rich and heads of governments wanted US health care to remain good, so they could be saved while their people died.  Alas - Central America now has medical tourism, so the rich and the bureaucrats will be fine.  They will have better access to MRI machines, blood tests, medicines, etc than Americans have in their own country.  What bullshit.

but where's the venture capital going to come from when everyone's being taxed to death?

That's part of why I said "if it works".

But where's the capital going to come from with the government imploding into a giant ball of dept?

Especially if you nationalize healthcare. Can you justify 50 billion dollar trips to the moon for idle curiosity when people are dying because the system is bankrupt?

The market will make a better decision as to whether we can currently afford space exploration.

Besides - the only way we'll ever do anything of real note out there is if we find something to do. At the moment there's no real material reason to go into space. If we ever want to break out into space in a big way, we've got to find an economic motive for going out there that's capable of funding the trip.

Once that happens, space exploration will become common - and then technology will REALLY be developed and cash will be diverted to research in ways NASA could never dream. Then it'll become cheap and easy. Then you'll wind up in space if you please.

There's a purpose to NASA pioneering the way on something that's far too large and complex for anyone but government to do. But in the long run there's no point to NASA if all there ever is is NASA.

Octavius: Your brother too must die; consent you, Lepidus?

Lepidus: I do consent...

Octavis: Prick him down, Antony.

Lepidus: . . . upon condition Publius shall not live, who is your sister's son, Mark Antony.

233 246 can we the people find standing in a massive lawsuit against the gvt intri\usion into our personhood?

The states are filing on behalf of the citizens. Now, Idaho has passed a law stating that the govt cannot forced any of their citizens to buy health insurance. Preemption would seem to say that Idaho must obey federal law, but I think the 10th Amendment makes exceptions, especially when the rights of citizens are violated.

240 Batchelor:  The house has called "something" at 1 o'clock on Sunday afternoon.

The Senate bill will become law and the reconciliation bill might never become law.  So where is that Senate bill.  We should be looking at it now.

Posted by: curious at March 18, 2010 06:38 PM (p302b)

241 curious i believe they shorted us our 72 hours last time a bill was introduced. was that stimulus? or the original baucas bill?

Posted by: willow at March 18, 2010 06:41 PM (7FgWm)

242 So, they have to trust, really trust that the reconciliation also gets passed cause, if it doesn't, the Senate bill becomes the law.  The two guests on Batchelor are saying that there are 8 to 12 who do not want to budge.  They are saying that this is the reason the president stayed home.  So that "they" can be sent to the oval office and emotionally water boarded.

Posted by: curious at March 18, 2010 06:41 PM (p302b)

243 Cathy Dalkemper?   is a no according to Batchelor's guest, even though not 24 hours ago she was huddled with "mrs. peolosi" and is her protege.  But the guest says that "mrs pelosi" understands that dalkemper barely got elected and she understands.   (personally I don't believe that)

245 The guests Selena Zito and Jody Schneider are saying she is "about 6 votes away" and "as soon as she has it, she'll bring it".

Earlier one of Batchelor's guests said now is the time to read the bill and read the reconciliation bill and compare the reconciliation bill to the rules on those types of bills and go over the Senate bills for anything that the republicans can bring to the table to "byrderize" the bill.  Batchelor's guest said that the democrats will be doing this to make sure the hands of the republicans are tied.

They also said the only thing now stopping our buddy Jason A from a yes are his constituents who apparently are very very loud in their opposition to this bill.  It seems that people need to make sure that the house and the senate understand that the American people don't want this bill in this form.

51  That's exactly what I think will happen; if this should pass -- I'm still of the opinion that this isn't over by a long shot.  This is about grabbing money for the Fed, plain and simple (plus the puking little statists get the jolllies out of some more power, at their own danger).  The idiots have banked on the economy at the very least not getting any worse and perhaps getting better (which I honestly don't see happening).  I think they shortchanged the American people's ingenuity (the ones that still have it intact, which can be suprising) and the entitlement groups patience in getting the goodies.  This is where they may trip themselves up -- it is very much like the reich...but with a stalinesque twist: they are pandering to, catering to the most unproductive members of society, while demonizing the very people who keep the country afloat -- in the end, it will not work; in the end many of them will eat each other if this keeps up.

Get as much medical care out of the way soon, stockpile on things you might need in that department, maybe start taking better care of yourself (because you're going to need your health intact).  It's going to be a rough for a while. I'd also advise keeping your heads down and your intentions quiet if things should get really bad.  Never hurts to be prepared.

anoyjer query, those that are found out to have been bribed, will those votes be deemed worthy?

- or can it forfeit/invalidate as we know it was already involved in an illegal action to get the  the vote?

for instance if you commit a crime as a businessman they take back anything they deemed you earned from that action /also fine/imprisonment why not with all this bribery?

why wouldn't that be pertinent to an elected officials vote? even federal gvt?

Posted by: willow at March 18, 2010 06:52 PM (7FgWm)

248 221 54 - No, we considered this and we put in a safeguard. Very clever, really when you think about it. We had the requirement that the President be a "natural born citizen" to ensure that his sensibilities would be in harmony with the good of the country.

My dad said "daley politics of Chicago" was always horrible.  Worse than the worst old fashioned mobster.  He said his generation is responsible for thinking they had disappeared when in reality they went underground only to resurface now a lot stronger than they were before.  His generation is wondering how "things got so bad so fast without (us) them seeing it and recognizing it".   I feel bad for them, they didn't see this coming and they feel terrible.

Carter, though misguided and unable to handle the presidency, loved America.

Posted by: curious at March 18, 2010 11:07 PM (p302b)

It wasn't that Carter loved America that kept him under control, to a good extent, it was that he was of American culture - as nutty as he was.  There were certain taboos in our culture that he wouldn't break, not because he didn't want to, but because the subconscious ties he had to them put them even out of consideration for him.  That was the whole point that the Founders were hinging on in the 'natural born citizen' clause.

The Precedent is totally out of control, and without any restraint, whatsoever, because he is not only not of this culture (he's a third worlder straight through, with his formative years in Indonesia having served to build the bulk of his personality) but he holds our culture and all of our institutions in utter contempt.  This is why he is so dangerous and poses a threat to the US that our nation has never before seen.  Well, it's that and the fact that affirmative action (and general feelings of white guilt) have shielded him from any real criticism (I have yet to hear any public voices talk explicitly about what a total moron he is) and the lame stream media has been more than complicit in lying about him and for him in ways never before seen.  All that together makes him lethal.

LOL actually, my point may have made your case a bit as well....

I was a kid at the time, but Carter was an absolute fool. He also was a bit of a narcissist -sounding familiar? Played the down homey peanut farmer to the hilt, but was every bit an elitist lefty snob who would rather suck wine and cheeses with the Village People than do  beer and BBQ with the NASCAR crowd- The dude got spooked by a bunny once!

It was with a sigh of relief when he was voted out- Iran had the last laugh- waiting 30 minutes into Reagan's presidency to release the Hostages.

Memorable things of the Carter years? America held Hostage, Gas Lines, High Inflation, the Misery Index, The whole damn third world falling to communism, Russians invading Afganistan and Jimmah sitting on TV in his stupid sweater saying we won't go to the olympics. Yeah, that's hittin' em where it hurt.

What a Puss.....

and to think the current asshole is looking like he may bump Carter up a notch from the bottom on  the "Crappiest Administration" list....

If you think McCain would have saved you from this you haven't been paying attention to the last century. Or any before it.

At best you're passing the buck. He'd have done damage, not good. Maybe less damage but damage still. And Obama would be around the corner. And then the next corner. And then the next.

If he's what it takes to wake people up to the nature of what's gone wrong, so be it. He is necessary. If not, then it's irrelevant.

If people don't wake up to what's going on, snap out of it and fight back, it's over anyway.
