— DrewM Lazy Friday afternoon in July+spotty internet connection=Not so much blogging.
A few thoughts to throw around....
Via John Noonan of the Weekly Standard, an interesting look at the precursor to the American Revolution (consider this your Military/American History Geekery warning).
Via Jim Treacher of the Daily Caller, they don't teach history so good at the part of Cornell Keith Olbermann went to.
And some guy left Cleveland for Miami. Um, who wouldn't do that if they had the chance?

Olbermann's first choice at cow college was animal husbandry. He was heart broken when he found out that didn't mean he could be a husband to an animal
He really loved his pet goat. I mean he really loved his pet goat.

Ah, yes: "the skulking way of war", alias Injun-style fightin'. By the mid 1700s Britain had forgotten how to fight a guerrilla campaign; it had become a naval power with a sideline in slaughtering Irish.
The Brits learnt the hard way that the North American continent is a little bigger than Ireland (or, for that matter, Nova Scotia), and the climate and terrain are not on an invader's side. To say the least.

What do Keith Olbermann and a Bull have in common?

What is black and white, red all over, and covered in cow poop and bull semen?

Today I started "The Assassin's Accomplice: Mary Surratt and the plot to kill Abraham Lincoln." She was the first woman executed by the federal government, for her part in the plot. Picked the book up at the Seward House last month--very well-preserved site, if you find yourself in Auburn NY and you're into that sort of thing.

I'm not sure if it's new.
Basically it's the idea that higher taxation is reasonable because our government provided people and businesses the framework to make money. I agree that taxes are useful for infrastructure and defense and other things, but this argument can be used no matter how high the tax rates are.
A variation on this is that higher tax for more social services is reasonable because our ancestors put a lot of hard work into making this a good place to live and make trade. Sort of like standing on the shoulders of giants.
Has anyone else noticed this?

He also incriminated himself during the Megyn Kelley interview when he admitted the order came directly from him, which is what the whole federal case was based on to begin with, the organization as a whole, but of course that's well after the fact. Funny thing is he claims that intelligence indicated that whites were going to stop blacks from voting at the polls. I wasn't aware that the NBPP had an intelligence gathering wing?
Not to mention the fact that they went to inner city polling places where blacks would well outnumber whites, so any notion that whites would be able to do anything of the sort is ridiculous. The bottom line is they went to these polling places to do the opposite and racially incite, pure and simple.

Book of Eli was a great movie and, as others have said, had a wonderful twist. Was unusual in that it dealt with God and the Bible without the usual knee-jerk Hollywood snark, and the plot centered around the last copy of the Bible on Earth as the catalyst for the rebirth of society. Very well-done and very hopeful.
The Road, on the other hand, is excellent if you're in the mood for something so bleak and depressing it makes you want to go hang yourself midway through the movie. As with the book, it is utterly, one hundred percent bleak and hopeless from beginning to end. Everyone is going to starve to death and there is not a glimmer of hope for any kind of future anywhere in sight. The blackest vision of anything I have ever seen or read. I loved it.

Feel Good Story of the Day: Concealed carry permit holder stops an armed robber
A concealed carry permit holder reportedly used his gun to save himself and a friend from an armed robber.
Polic say that a concealed carry permit holder, who was also a military member who had just returned from an overseas deployment, was sitting in a car with another individual in Mount Auburn, OH. A robber, who was armed with a gun, reportedly approached the car, threatened the men's lives, and shot one of the men in the arm. Acting in self defense, the concealed carry permit holder returned fire, hitting the robber in the stomach and causing him to flee, police say. The suspected robber, as well as the injured victim, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital, according to news reports.

That is definitly worth mentioning too. All in all it was a pro-religion and pro-Christian movie which is a rare animal in Hollywood these days. I kept waiting for the bashing to come all throughout the movie and it didn't. For a bloody action movie it was high on hope and quite uplifting at the same time. Hollywood got this one right for a change.

GA as a bunch of ignorant rednecks
I went to school in LA, and every liberal crazy who found out I am from Georgia would denigrate and insult us Georgians as racist sisterbangers. I found, in most cases, I am related to more black people than they knew.
Funny how liberals are all for diversity of thought and fighting stereotypes until they aren't.

The exchange rate is not taken into consideration, the athletes are paid in US dollars, and taxes are also not taken into consideration. The athletes themselves may take those things into consideration, but for the most part, they want the "bigger" contract regardless of the outside forces.
93 I know there are states that charge pro athletes income tax based on the percentage of their paycheck earned for games played there, regardless of where they declare their residence...Illinois isn't one of them?
Posted by: HeatherRadish
Not only the states, but cities do too. Cincinnati is one of them. If you play for a team that plays a game in Cincy, you pay taxes on your prorated salary.
Almost every state that has a major league team taxes the visiting teams' athletes. Funny though, the trainers, equipment guys, and coaches are not taxed.
Not sure what you are asking here.. I believe Illinois charges you taxes paid by any company residing in Illinois. It doesn't matter where you personally reside. So, if the Bulls are an Illinois company, you pay Illinois taxes. (grain of salt needed here.. I am not a tax lawyer..)
Posted by: ChiTown Jerry
Only if you actually work in Illinois. If the company has a branch in Indiana, you pay Indiana taxes if you work and reside in Indiana. If you work in Indiana, but live in Illinois, you would pay taxes in both, but you do get credit for taxes paid in the other state.

Denzel Washington is a devout Christian, so I doubt he'd have taken part in any Bible bashing.

I was getting a big "Christianity is the opiate of the masses" vibe from Oldman's character, but it was clear from the ending that wasn't the message. Though religion can be used for power and control (see: Islam), Denzel had a higher purpose in mind.
Bravo.

Yeah, that was pretty funny. Unfortunately only about a third of the movie is any good; roughly the first third with Heston running around abandoned L.A. alone shooting things and quietly going insane. The rest of it is so 1971-ish it makes you want to cry, with the supposedly deep and thoughtful rantings of Mathias and the "Family" and Heston's encounters with the hippie children who blather on about starting over in a new Garden of Eden or some such bullshit.
The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price and even the Will Smith movie were much more effective treatments of I Am Legend, though I don't think Richard Matheson was happy with any of them.

Maybe that's the book I meant. Nuclear war, right?Yeah, written by Pat Frank in 1959. Frank was a Dem before the moonbats took over and a bit of his liberalism creeps in every fifty pages or so, but nothing really obnoxious. It's an excellent window into the state of the world in '59. It has a generally hopeful tone, postulating how a family can survive nuclear holocaust, but lays out in pretty stark terms what a tough and brutal existence it would be. Very good book.

It's so horrific it almost defies description. The last scene of the movie is one of the most nightmarish few moments ever committed to film and brutally sums up the overall message of "in the event of nuclear war, WE'RE FUCKED." If The Road is the most depressing movie I've ever seen, Threads is a very close second. Hell, it's probably a photo finish.

You have to take a lot of his stuff with several grains of salt. He was even worse in the previous series, Island In The Sea of Time.
The "hero" of the story was a black female lesbian Coast Guard captain. The evil guy was a Coast Guard Lt who grew up in Montana on a ranch.
If you can get by that kind of liberal "shock" crap the rest of the book is pretty good. (again this was a three book series).

189 WBUS,
I dunno I found Threads to be almost as humorous as The Day After WRT survival rates within the Dead Zone of multi-warhead impact areas.
I enjoy the Post-Apoc Genre but the entire notion tends to take a rather unrealistic stance on the matter. Nuclear War is not "the end" like an off switch, and it would not be something that would have a lot of people who "saw the light" wandering around 15 years later. Reality is depending on the number of candles lit you'd face between a 40 and 90% reduction in human population with a reversion to 1920s to 1950s tech depending.
There'd be severe secondary mortality as people who are alive only because of the civilization we've built died off. No drugs generated for a while, dialysis would be hard, transplants would go by the wayside for a good long time. Not to worry though our betters would be nice and cozy at Mt. Weather living like kings.

Not short-lived enough, thanks to the army of dipshits who mailed several thousand pounds of nuts into CBS. Jericho is one of the very worst television series I've ever seen.
These were the main things I learned from Jericho:
1. Kansas has mountains.
2. Human beings are radiation-proof.
3. Skeet Van Der Beek or whatever the fuck his name was is a post-apocalyptic Jesus.
4. After the bombs come down people are going to expend precious gasoline on generating power for the local bar's jukebox and mope around bitching about relationship problems.
My pet name for this series was "Dawson's Nuke".

Agreed. Good premise, poor execution (really, does Idaho look like Thousand Oaks, CA?), and the sloppy lefty sub-plot.

He had to have someone who completed the Norman Rockwell picture of a nuclear family to get to higher echelons. Everything this guy does is political. I'm not saying he's ever sucked another mans package, but I'm pretty sure he's held a few in his mouth until the swelling went down. An 82-year-old man shoots one of two illegal alien car theft ring members in the face and is charged with multiple felonies. The illegals are not charged.
"Legal analyst Dan Recht said he believes the Jefferson County District Attorney is “seriously overcharging” a Wheat Ridge homeowner, accused of attempted first degree murder for shooting at two thieves.
82-year-old Robert Wallace said he fired two shots at two men when they tried to run him over while stealing his flatbed trailer.
Wallace now faces twelve felony counts, including four counts of attempted first degree murder, for what he described as an act of defending his property and his life. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
One of the thieves, Damacio Torres later admitted to the theft. He and his partner in crime, Alvara Cardano both have prior arrest records and are believed to be in the country illegally.
But they are not facing any charges."
He has a history of being a condescending idiot.
And Jefferson County D.A. Scott Storey is up for re-election.

Last time I was in Richmond was when I went to Camp Pickett with the Utah National Guard back in the 80's. Good times...

AVG tells me that site is unsafe. What are you trying to do to my computer?

Jeez, you guys need to relax your fire walls a bit. Go with Norton, Macafee doesn't have a sense of humor.

Strangely enough neither do I after spending 26 hours last weekend recovering my parents' computers.
Oh, and Norton is a $60 piece of malware.

I've been bitten by the shitware more than once so I'm extra careful. Kinda like I don't want to play with the AIDS virus.
I tried for a smiley but too damn stupid to pull it off.

I hear you. Made an Imperial IPA that puts your dick in the dirt, and only have one TAD tank left, can't find enough guys to try and drink it, we're afraid of waking up with Tyson's tiger in the room.

I used to be a huge fan of IPAs, still am if they are good. Some of my hops are starting to get flowers, but they seem to be going slow this year compared to last.
I still need to bottle tonight, already added priming sugar and sterilized the cans and bottles. One of these days going to need to keg this shit and pressurize, but for now, I can't buy beer this good.

I have an ale in secondary I can't bottle because I can't get done with the IPA batch. Plus I'm lazy--bottling is a pain in the ass. I'm thinking of going to a tap system but man I drink too much as it is!

135 Buzzion, western Ohio is geographically Indiana, except for NW, which is of course Michigan. NE is geologically part of Pennsylvania, SW is Kentucky--you see where I'm going here. By the time you get done attaching the parts of Ohio to the regions they belong to, there's nothing left.
