— LauraW Something kind of awesome found over at S. Weasel's comments.
Check it out today if you have a few moments. It's an interview of Samuel Clemens by Rudyard Kipling.
Not all that long, and pretty nifty if you're into that sort of thing.

UK elections:
Left-wingers won't let go of power, (gosh - where have we heard this before?)
and the conservatives kinda screwed up and stuff. (gosh, where have we heard this before?)
Still, looks like Britain is screwed. The uber libs and the neo-uber-libs are gonna join hands and take Britain off the socialist cliff together. weeee.

Nothing funny about it, really. To me, libtard crusaders for social "justice" always ooze that "The lady doth protest too much, methinks" vibe.
Shakespeare wrote that line over 400 years ago, and I bet the understanding was ancient even to him.

Agreed. They wish to use the force of gov't to atone for their own sins and shortcomings. Easier to do that than fix themselves, no?

Laura, not on this one, the overnight thread...couldn't reach anyone else. i don't want to draw anymore attention to it by putting it out here again.
Is it possible to help with that?

I don't remenber reading any of the classics...and Shakespeare, my head hurts thinking just about it. Chaucer (sp) rings a vague bell. Does James and the Giant Peach count? Its sad...really, eh...Hi-school in the 80's.

Neither Romney nor Palin will be the GOP candidate in 2012.
Romney is Mr. Mandated Healthcare - DOA
Palin endorsed McCain and Fiorina (an affirmative-action feminist-equalist playing kissy face with Jesse Jackson - barfariffic!) - questionable judgement.
Possibilities: Mike Pence, John Thune, Jim DeMint (how I wish), Bobby Jindal (he could still make a comeback.)

Nixon and Bush. Two of the most liberal Republican Presidents, but to hear liberals talk, they're Evil Incarnate.

Twain, though, did manage to become a major PITA in his later years. You might say modern smart-ass collegianism is a bad cross between aping his attitudes and those of Hemingway. But it is definitely aping.
I'm unaware of his position on the Nixon question.

Clemens was certainly no conservative.
Yet, one thing that distinguishes conservatives from leftists is that we can read and admire the literature of Clemens on the merits, despite his handicap of leftist thought. A leftist will dismiss an author out of hand when their political views aren't exactly in lock step.

A literary god known for using his longhorn to mark twain and then some. You know, all it really takes is a moustachio like that to pull some serious wool. Just ask Sam Bigbone Elliott.

Immediately after that very interview Mark Twain's moustache ass raped Kipling's moustache repeatedly. It was quite a scandal and Twain's honorary degree was taken away and given to a small boy with a beautiful costrato speaking voice. Sadly, the young lad could not carry a tune and later committed suicide by what the British press referred to as "a means too revolting and lewd to describe in these pages."
All true. Look it up.

Indeed, and I thank you for the link, Laura W. Huck Finn is still causing controversy, as some schools ban it due to use of the n-word, even though it is deployed in one of the most anti-slavery novels ever written.
It amazes me how literate people were in this generation; although his comments were tidied, I'm sure, to hear Twain speak so cogently and wisely off the top of his head is humbling.
Such a sad life he led at the end, and with no faith to comfort him. But truly the best writer America has produced.

Prithee, Ipay head to my words this morn'. Do not forsaketh the inestimable power of the grape, indeed if one wishes to find solace and comfort in the bosom of one of such hideous visage as Charlotte Bronte.

If you read nothing else of Twain read A Tramp Abroad and his autobiography. The novels are classics but he really was best as an essayist.
Clemens, speaking of Kipling: "Together we encompass all knowledge. Kipling knows everything worth knowing and I know all the rest."

Shooter, how dare you say that about the man who invented Christmas -- and Childhood!
He once visited my part of the country, and pronounced the denizens "sullen and clownish." Apart from being true, we've never forgiven the mealy-mouthed sonofabitch.

Clemens, speaking of Kipling: "Together we encompass all knowledge. Kipling knows everything worth knowing and I know all the rest."--Posted by: Gilded Splinters
On novels, "Personally, I never did care for fiction or storybooks. What I like to read about are facts and statistics of any kind. Get your facts first. Then you can distort them as much as you please."
On conscience, like a child, needing a good spanking and severity in order to maintain order and keep it from intruding where it isn't welcome and has a habit of hampering any pleasure in life. His distinction between the conscience and a child, it isn't good to kill a child, but helpful to kill one's conscience.
On opinions, Clemens makes the distinction between his private opinion vs. polling the weather before stating his public opinion.
So he fought one campaign during the War Between the States for the South. I didn't know or remember that interesting piece. Did he abandon the effort prior to the end of that war or afterwards to go West, mining and scribing for Nevada politicians?
LauraW, great link. Thanks.
What an interesting fellow Kipling was, so down to earth. I keep meaning to read his novel, Kim.
