Friday Night TV Thread
— Gabriel Malor

Good evening, fellow shut-ins. I've stumbled across a new show in addition to Haven and that is White Collar on USA. They're doin' a season 2 marathon this evening and I. can't. turn. off. (On right now. Dude, check it out.)

What is up in your world?

Oh, and this has been played a few (dozen) times in the Malor household:

I know, I know. That's like the fifth time we've posted that song here. What can I say? Love it; can't get it out of my head.

I blame Lauraw. (Then again, I blame Lauraw for most stuff. Ya gotta watch the hunchies. They're shifty.)

Yeah, I like the typographic version better because it totally freaks me out when I'm tripping, but they disabled the embedding for it. (For the childrens.) Bastards.

The only thing I wish they'd left alone is that temporal cold war business...I don't believe there is such thing as Time, so how can people travel through it?  What we perceive as Time is really just a universal change in state.

I have a problem watching shows that employ time travel for this reason. It' kills my "suspension of disbelief." It's like a show that has always obeyed gravity (as one does...) suddenly not. It's jarring. It's imposible for me to just roll with it.

39 The only thing I wish they'd left alone is that temporal cold war business...

It could've been good, but the writers moved onto other story arcs which eventually doomed the show.  The ending is especially horrific.  A shame really.

One big complaint I had with the show:

When they start fighting the Xindi, they bring onboard the space marines to help the crew fight them, the MACO's.  When you start bringing in other characters to "rescue" your starring cast members, it doesn't bode well for viewers getting invested in the show.  A huge mistake on the writers' part.

44 White Collar is one of my favorite shows.     Also, really digging Covert Affairs.   Better and better.

Of shows not on just now, but hoping for many new seasons...  The Good Guys.   Nothing is quite as great as the pilot episode which some people seemed to dislike a whole lot but was actually brilliant.

And Human Target... which is starting up again very soon.   I'd heard it was based on a comic book and the show is over the top and outrageous, a little cheesy, bigger than life and very *very* fun.

Posted by: Synova at September 03, 2010 07:32 PM (P0X9Q)

45 Ref Night Watch and Day Watch. Well, that's how the Russians do SciFi. Interesting, fun and confusing. Suggest reading the Wikipedia pages on the movies after you watch them - it'll explain some of the stuff that flew over your (and my!) head. I'm gonna try and watch 4 Lions this weekend. See how the brits handle comedy about inept terrorists. The trailer was hysterical - see if they can keep it up for the whole movie.

Yeah, I hadn't considered that Rita will now be like Harry.  Maybe it'll be a good thing.   I'm not sure if I can watch it.... I know I couldn't watch it after the finale.

All the other seasons ended upbeat in a twerked way, with Dexter 'triumphing' and gaining ground.  This last one had such a wicked twist....and seeing that baby sitting that pool of his mother's blood just did me in for some reason.   Darkest thing I've seen on the screen in years.

60 Fat lotta good that does me, alerting me to a marathon session of White Collar while it's happening.

Useless!

I spent an entire day on Burn Notice this week but I was all prepared and shit and had my DVR set to record so's I could skip all the commercials.

(Unemployed confession:  I'm not a big TV watcher, normally... But I've run out of good stuff to rest my eyeballs on and gone through pretty much the whole catalogue available on ON DEMAND and I'll have to say that White Collar rates as pretty passable entertainment.)

Fuck.  I'm such a TV whore now that I have watched more than 5 episodes of Psych!

Also, that Ce-Lo song is pretty catchy but I kinda prefer the original, "unofficial" video.

You know, the one that looks like a movie that you got shown in 3rd Grade, with the words and all.

It's almost too meta but so so satisfying!

Can't get enough of Ce-Lo now though.

Dude really does know how to make pop music, doesn't he?

61 "I do admit to yelling "Kiss him!" at the TV for the particular Neal and Peter scenes. Occasionally."

LOL. I was jusst thinking how much I particularly like those primary male relationships.   Yes, I like a good male/female team-up like Castle, but I'm finding that the shows I like the best lately are the ones where the most important relationships are not romantic ones.    Even in Castle, part of the fun was the male bonding.  ;-)

And actually... to the people who really like the portrayal of Peter and his wife.... that's really only possible because the primary relationship of the show is between Peter and Neil.   So the conflict, the questions about trust and betrayal don't enter into the husband and wife relationship at all, since it's all about Peter and Neil.

Look for a moment at Castle, for an example.   There's the tension between Beckett and Castle, the misunderstandings and stops and starts.   That's fun, but in order for it to continue they can never be a stable couple.

Me too.

It's unfortunate, but I think that the whole "sexual tension" bit has been done so to death, well and poorly, that I kind of get irritated when I see writers going there.

That and underlit shakycam foot chase scenes, it's not scary nor suspenseful!

It's just boring.

Yeah, I kind of feel like they didn't know what they wanted to do with the premise and it got away from them.

Okay, you've got one show, shot on one basic set, with a pretty stable cast.

That's got to be a moneymaker right there but nooo, someone had to get all international location sceny!

Now it's such a huge world-wide, deep reaching, conspiracy that I can't be bothered to give a crap about any of the original characters.

Just leaves me wondering, where the hell are the omnipresent "blue suits" when I need a hand picking up dog crap off my yard?

90 Mayday: This was the first season. I made a mistake and said "setup for 3rd season"

Posted by: sig at September 03, 2010 08:51 PM (2i+Vz)

91 A Rant. Somebody tell me why I should ever watch an episodic drama (one where there's an arc that covers many episodes) on NBC again? They put on a show last season - Persons Unknown. They PROMISED they would show the entire series - "all questions answered" - no matter what. I wasn't worried about the "all questions" business but I did want to see the entire first (and what was certainly going to be the only) season. It was marginally ok so I kept watching it. A few weeks ago, episode 11 was pre-empted for some sport event. The next week there were two episodes so I thought - "oh good, they're going to catch up quickly". I watch the first episode that night. The beginning - "what happened last week" - was completely new to me! They jumped straight from episode 10 to 12 and never had episode 11 on TV. At ANY time slot! Then they ran the last episode of the series an hour later. Turns out ep 11 was "aired" on the NBC website only. What kind of crap is that? Persons Unknown is a show like "Lost" or "Prison Break" where complicated things happen and if you miss an episode, you miss a lot. BLOWING OFF an episode shows complete disrepect to the viewing public. (I was able to dl the missing episode but the point is I shouldn't have to go the extra mile) So, NBC - do you really expect me to watch your next episodic every-week-is-important show, "The Event"? Just how stupid do you think I am? ... Eh, I'm a moron. I'll probably watch a few episodes - but I won't like it!

The pre-emption might have been local.

96 At least ENT brought in Marines... I mean ever other series the entire senior staff would dive right into war zones, almost every single time. With a few exceptions with DS9, it was the senior officers of various Starfleet crews that always did the fighting, no matter how perilous, with no regard for what would happen to the rest of the crew without any leadership.

97 My post at 89. One of the cops in the Aussie series Underbelly is the same guys who stars in The Glades. It just amazes me that so many Aussie actors are in American tv shows and unless you read their bios you would never know their homeland. They are very good at covering up the down under accent.

98 Must be why I like "Burn Notice", minimal continuity between episodes. Plots are self contained per episode. Not much need to even watch them in order.

Sig, thanks for the clarification.  I thought it was the 1st season too.

Comrade Arthur - I didn't realized they never aired that missing episode.  I just figured my DVR didn't record it or something.  I am usually 2-3 episodes behind watching any given series so I just assumed something went wrong in the recording.  But you are right, that's awful for NBC to do.  PU must've had really bad ratings and they were trying to wind it up.

Posted by: Mayday at September 03, 2010 09:11 PM (TRgli)

100 ... which, speaking of tv, takes us back to star trek. of course. in the joan collins episode, kirk, spock & bones are transported to 30's usa, where they allow a mother teresa type to be hit by a truck, as otherwise she would gain international prominence, thus allowing america to be unarmed, hitler to be further appeased & he gets the bomb & not a good time line. that is actually not an implausible scenario then, during the cold war (60's when the series ran; thank you roddenbery) or in 2003 when bush took out saddam. we will never know the time line of saddam's murderous megalomania, UN [& GE] corruption. thank goodness. & thank you, our simpleton president of providential grace & love, GWB.

Posted by: gomm at September 03, 2010 09:12 PM (73jUp)

101 Got no TV here.  We watched these white terns with black heads dive bomb fish.
Ever seen an Osprey dive from 60 feet in full plummet and CRASH hit the water and come up with a trout?

Same thing, only there were 15 or so of them dive bombing minnows every minute for a half hour.  Better than the Blue Angels.

We are inland North Idaho/Canadian Border.  We don't have Terns.  Given their white body/black head (black beak/feet, not red like coastal terns), I can speculatively conclude they are Aleutian Terns.  The only other terns this color occur in the Mississippi valley and north through Nova Scotia.

I think they got their ass blown out of Alaska by the visicious wind storm we had last week.  I think I will never see them again in this region.  A real treat.

When they are not showing BS shows about pawn shops, truckers driving on ice, or lumberjacks they are showing propaganda videos about globull warming.

--A couple months ago I saw a mini-series they had called "How the Earth Was Made," which was excellent (even if it's more fitting for a Pre-History Channel than the History Channel).  Best of all, the geologists shown on it flat-out said that we're between Ice Ages.

Anyone who is not a hardcore Climate Scientologist could watch it and see that there is no permanent equilibrium to the earth's climate, but rather it seeks an equilibrium in response to ever-changing conditions (for example, the last Ice Ages were most likely spurred by the cooling that resulted when volcanoes crested the Isthmus of Panama; global circulation/exchange of ocean currents kept the whole planet less extreme in temperature overall).

IMO, National Geographic is even lamer and farther from is supposed mission.  During the daytime it's more like The Dog Whisperer Channel.

171 My wife & I watched White Collar from the beginning. It's pretty good. This season Mozzie is morphing into the stand-out role.

172 Yeah, my sis told me about White Collar so I caught it last night. Sure beats the constant "serial killers stalking women with cats" on network police procedurals.

173 I couldn't sleep well last night - maybe it was the drop in air pressure do to Hurricane Earl passing by - and, as it oft does on those occasions, my mind wandered. To places no man's mind should. For example... what on EARTH did genghis have to do to play Kissy & Makeup with Ace? Oh, the Mental Image! The IMAGE!!!! Next time... sleeping pills. Lots of sleeping pills.

I've been wondering why so many football players have so much hair coming out of the backs of the helmets.

(Next time you need to get to sleep, try coffee. Not too much; a half cup sometimes does the trick. I know it's counterintuitive but sometimes it works.)

178 169 History channel. What did they have? A show about the future of NYC Not another one of those Life Without People shows, I hope... what IS the Left's morbid fascination with the extinction of mankind, anyway? Episode after episode of how long it will take all of our buildings to decay, and how wonderful for Mother Gaia it will be that we are no longer around. The Left is Sick. Morbid, and Sick.

@157 I don't think there're any subliminal messages in listening to this song. haven't you ever had a situation when you listen to some song over and over again and you like it to pieces?

Yeah, I was kinda kidding...trying to start a conspiracy theory that that video is some kind of tool of subversion or something...

You've got that right...they've been that way for a long time...it's not something recent.  I had a college professor that used to gleefully describe how we were going to be wiped out by a plague any. time. now.  This was back in the early 80's.

187 White Collar is a seriously good show, and I recommend it. So is The Glades by the way. Screw Milton Berle, this is the golden age of television. I have never in my life seen so much stuff on I actually want to watch and 90% of it is on cable.
