Texas and California have equivalent Hispanic populations.
So does that mean our problem here in California is all the Asians? *ducks from shoe hurled by WTR*
THIS WAS ONLY A JOKE.

Battle of San Jacinto
(21 April 1836)
When Houston's long awaited order to advance was given, the Texans did not hesitate. When within seventy yards the word "fire" was given, the Texan shouts of "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad" rang along the entire line. Within a short time, 700 Mexicans were slain, with another 730 taken as prisoners. The battle for Texas was won.

Yeah, idle hands and the Devil's work and all that. I wonder about a correlation between amount of time a legislature meets and amount of laws/regulation. Something for someone more industrious than me to do.

I'm thinking it'd be a push, thanks to those population numbers. Though, the Californians might win due to sluttiness. And I mean that, of course, in a good way.
Posted by: FUBAR at March 09, 2010 10:25 AM (1fanL)
In theory, an excellent idea. In practice, my state assemblyman Ted Lieu is a total California communist.

There's so much I love about California, but man, the progressivism is just drowning us.
I'm also glad they pointed out that the Hispanic populations are the same. The truth is, many liberals here are more than happy to play roundabout blame-the-minority games, which, without irony, they'll imply it's racist to object to. But as these numbers show, that doesn't hold water.
California public sector unions are a parasite that have overwhelmed their host. I honestly don't know what it's gonna take to change things here. I hate to sound pessimistic, but I just don't see California getting cured any time soon.

Somewhere in California there must be the "core communist" or "mother communist", the one from which all the others sprang.
We really should find this creature, kill it, burn it and scatter the ashes.

Want to see more fun with #s? Check the U-Haul rates going from Texas -> Cali compared to Cali -> Texas - they'll practically pay you to take a trailer to Cali as so many leave so often.

It's because of all the unions, public employee unions especially, teachers' union most of all. It was a lot better when CA was controlled by the Southern Pacific.
What's the difference in the cost of living between CA and TX? Could that alone explain the salary difference for teachers? (note: I'm pretty sure the CA number is way low, considering other forms of compensation esp the VERY generous retirement and other packages.) note #2 I want to see the difference in compensation awarded to administrators: back in Orange County, they have pretty firm control over the quality of the education administered and get gratuidous amounts of cash and bonuses.
Also, does it weird anyone out about the grades chosen to represent the level of education? TX is ranked 16th in 4th grade math and 8th grade writing and still only 30th in the ACT? Why the decline?

It's not a "who", it's a "where."
And if you are looking for the targeting coordinates--the school mascot is a bear--which back in the Cold War was spot on.

21 Y-not, if Asians were running the state, we'd be rolling in money. Asians care only about the green. And can you imagine if our school system were run by Asians? Hello, corporal punishment!
Wait, I like this idea...
Wherestherum: if you stay in California, will you please consider the top spot at the Board of Education?

This is so hard to believe that I can barely stand to type it. With California on the cusp of becoming America’s First Failed State®, its Legislature has decided that what we need is MORE GUBMINT SERVICES!
Honestly. A bill to provide "free" health care services to all resident (yes, illegal aliens are "residents") has passed in the California Senate. It's the California Universal Health Care Bill. Read it and weep. http://tinyurl.com/ya8hp6x
California has a budget hole larger than the entire economies of many nations and the Legislature decicdes that this is a great time to give us "free" health care. It will be funded with exactly what California needs as its productive population is leaving, and business are running for the hills (hills in other states, specifically), an income tax increase and a new payroll tax.
I used to think they were just stupid, now I can see that they are quite literally insane.

Really, what's so hard for the lefties to understand about this? You have a controlled lab experiment here, like N and S Korea. The main difference in our fortunes is government.

Re: CA outflow approx. = to TX inflow...I guess that's where Farouk Shami's 10% came from in the primaries...
Liberals tend to huddle together in TX metro areas...parts of Dallas, parts of Austin, parts of Houston. They do not roam freely throughout the entire state, and that is because they are largely uncomfortable here, outside of their few urban refuges, where they sit around, complaining to their city-council members about their perceived lack of public transportation....

So does that mean our problem here in California is all the Asians?
So what? White Cali leftists are more disgusting than White TX patriots. But what else is new? The Latinos will still trend leftward, seduced by the welfare state siren song.
But as for Asian Americans, to answer the loaded question seriously, a blogger by the name of Arthur Hu has good analysis of this. Asian Americans are decidedly *not* Commiecrat per se, but they tend to live in Commiecrat areas and see placating and imitating their white leftist neighbors as a way to get ahead. They are also prominent in academia, and to get ahead in academia is to be leftist. So the GOP had better exploit the Asian resentment of more often than not Black and Latino crime, and stop Hispandering. The tax issues alone will not appeal to the academics--they are tax fattened after all.
And no, the Asian populations in CA and TX are not comparable. CA has far more.

If you dive into the ACT score actual values, they pan out like this:
Testing %:
California – 15% of graduates are tested
Texas – 30% of graduates are tested.
not 30th in the rankings

Problem is all these liberals screw up their own states and then invade redstates and continue their failed policies in their new homes.
Virginia and North Carolina come to mind.

TX is ranked 16th in 4th grade math and 8th grade writing and still only 30th in the ACT? Why the decline?
Probably because so many kids in Texas go to either Texas A&M University (Whoop!) or University of Texas, both of which require the SAT (and will not use the ACT score for admission). Some of the smaller schools in Texas will accept either the SAT or the ACT.
In Texas, any kid in the top 10% of their graduating class (they're getting ready to change it to the top 8%) is automatically guaranteed admittance to any PUBLIC university in Texas. Therefore, the majority of the top kids in any high school will end up at these larger universities.
Incidentally, if you are a conservative planning to move to Texas, you'll definitely want to look at the Fort Worth area - we're one of the two major cities that went "red" in 2008. I have a feeling that more cities will go red in 2012. They also had a survey come out recently that found that 50% of Hispanics in Texas identify themselves as conservative!

Oh, yeah, you're right. I guess you can't take everything on face. That was a stupid thing for Doug Ross to have included. The average scores for CA are significantly higher than TX. (about 1.5 points)
The reason so few CAs take the ACT is because the Cal State and UC systems don't want them; they want the SAT. The only reason any of my friends ever took the ACT was to get into private schools back East. Doug Ross very unfairly spun that.
Posted by: dudeinsantacruz at March 09, 2010 01:14 PM (3wYSZ)
PS Mr Ross claimed the rank was "ACT score rank", not percent taking it or whatever, which is why I said he acted stupidly.
