— DrewM Because nothing says Memorial Day weekend like, er, hockey.
The NHL is enjoying great ratings (so long as you grade on a curve) but as a Rangers fan, this is a painful series. Any time Flyers fans have hope is depressing.
On the upside, at least there's at least one Origianal Six team in the finals and the Blackhawks do have one of the greatest logos in all of sports.
Game 1 was great if you like the Blackhawks and/or a lot of scoring, not so great if you actually like hockey. Hopefully game 2 will feature some actual defense and maybe even a little goaltending.
After Game 2 be sure to check out Moron Hockey, the blog tmi3rd started and don't update enough, for series to date recap.
People joke about the toughness/craziness of hockey players (especially at playoff time). One of the guys playing tonight is Duncan Keith of the Blackhawks. He took a puck in the mouth in the conference clinching win over San Jose. He missed a few shifts, came back to play and then did an interview.
Pierre McGuire said it was 4 teeth, ultimately it was 7. Old time hockey.

Chris Rock (as Nat X on SNL) explained why there aren't more black people in hockey:
I was watchin' a hockey game and I noticed there were no black people. So I looked into this example of the white man once again keepin' the black man down and found out why there were no black people in hockey. First, it's cold out there! Second, we might get our gold teeth knocked out! Third, we have no desire to dominate another professional sport. And, finally, no brother is going to go anywhere there is a bunch of crazy white people wearin' masks and carryin' sticks!

Yes, it's the second period, so you can come back to it later. Right now it's like a pitchers dual in baseball - not good time to sell the sport. In Game 1, there was a score every 5 minutes.

Drew, getting into the hockey punditry, I think both defenses sure let a lot of guys get to the front of the net in game 1... in any event, Niemi has been quite solid in this one. Leighton has played well as well, but that Eager goal was kinda inexcusable. Mesa's right- Hawks have been so bad at home during the playoffs (loved my Preds beating up on them, even if it didn't pan out in the end) that if they come out of Chi-town up 2-0, they're probably good for a win in 4-5 games.
Posted by: tmi3rd at May 31, 2010 06:15 PM (WRtsc)
So far the only "play" I can recognize is ... dump the puck into the corner and try to smash the guy and take the puck. On power plays the game slows down enough that I think I can see what the offense is trying to do.
I'm really trying, so any moron advice would be appreciated.
Posted by: huh at May 31, 2010 06:18 PM (+ABdJ)
First of all, I'm assuming you know what icing and offside are? If you don't, let me know and I'll explain.
Part I: breakout.
The breakout is when you are coming out of your own zone with the puck. You usually start from behind your own net and skate the puck up or pass it to a man, usually along the boards, followed often by a pass to a man coming up at high speed from behind you.
Part II: The neutral zone
Going through the neutral zone, you're trying to develop speed and numbers. If you're leading with the puck and you don't have something like 3-5 guys in front of you, it's a good idea to skate the puck into the offensive zone. If you're staring at the entire other team, dumping the puck in and chasing it is often a better idea (just in terms of personal health).
Part III: Offensive zone
The two defensemen usually take up positions at the blue line, both to hold the puck in and also to act something like point and shooting guards in basketball. The three forwards will usually (in today's NHL) do what we call cycling- in essence, you'll keep the puck in the same general area while the forwards skate in a circular motion within the attacking zone, attempting to draw a defender out of position. If you get that defender to bite, you have open space, and someone will go to the front of the net.
What we usually tell less-experienced players is to go to the front of the net and obstruct the goaltender's vision, such as the goal Philly just scored.
Ask more questions...
Posted by: tmi3rd at May 31, 2010 06:25 PM (WRtsc)
Go to a game, if at all possible. It's a million times better to see what's going on.
Watching it on TV, the camera follows the puck but you don't get a sense of who's going where and how the plays are set up.
Posted by: Mama AJ at May 31, 2010 06:27 PM (XdlcF)
I'll try to follow the cycling aspect. I've heard announcers talk about it and can kinda see what they are doing. I have been able to recognize the "stand in front of the goalie and block his view" play.
btw, nbcsports is streaming two "star cam" views where the camera stays on one player -- it changes with every line change. I'm finding that somewhat educational -- I can see what the player does off the puck.
Posted by: huh at May 31, 2010 06:38 PM (+ABdJ)
Sometimes it is kind of random and hope but there are also set plays or just a feel between teammates where they purposefully shoot with the idea it will be deflected.
NHL goalies will stop the vast majority of shots they can see, getting the puck to change direction is an important part of the game.
Again, it looks random but I've seen guys spend hours working on either getting the puck to the net for a deflection or work on deflecting pucks. It can be subtle but like most sports the best just make it look easy when it requires great skill and lots of practice.
Also a lot of what they are trying to do on offense is designed to get the puck in good scoring position with time and space for the shooter. That can be accomplished by skating or passing the puck around. Getting the goalie to move increases your chances of getting it by him. Again, let them see the puck and be what's called 'square to the shooter' and NHL goalies will stop an awful lot of shots.

How do they decide when to change lines? (Is that the right term?) Does the coach give a signal and then the guy dumps it in the corner so they can do a shift change?
Does each line always change as a group? Do all three forwards always change together -- and the same for the defenders?
A lot of goals seem random -- why don't they just constantly shoot and hope for a lucky break?
A lot of passes seem blind -- how do they know where their guy will be?

Huh-
Line changes- you time your shifts to about 40-45 seconds and the coaches will signal you as well. The coaches decide who the next line is.
Changes are dependent on everyone being where they need to be at change time... Alexander Ovechkin is a notable hot dogger who has pissed off his linemates by staying out longer than coached.
Shooting- the rule is, there's no such thing as a bad shot on net. Often, that's what we do- but if there's an obvious open area where one of your guys is standing with all day to pick a spot to shoot at, passing is often a good idea. Also, it's a good play to bounce the biscuit off the goaltender and let someone clean up the rebound.
Passing- you monitor where your guys are going to be, and there are certain times when you dish the puck off as a drop pass as a set play for someone else to pick up the biscuit.

tmi3rd actually played so if he's around he may have better answers but...
How do they decide when to change lines? (Is that the right term?) Does the coach give a signal and then the guy dumps it in the corner so they can do a shift change?
A lot of it has to do with time they've been out. Players go all out for 40-60 seconds and they are spent. In that window they are looking for a chance to get off and get fresh guys on. The ability to do that will often be determined by where the puck is on the ice and who has it.
The signal is usually between players. A player on the bench will know who 'he has' and when he sees him coming to the bench, he'll jump on.
Sometimes a coach won't like how their line matches against who the opponent has on the ice and he'll let them know he wants a quick change.
Does each line always change as a group? Do all three forwards always change together -- and the same for the defenders?
Depends. Sometimes there will be lines and D pairs that stay together but it often changes throughout the course of the game. Sometimes it's the coach wanting to give a star more time, better match ups vs. opponents. Sometimes a guy isn't playing well, so the coach will move him around and see if it shakes things up and makes something happen.
When a line out there the coach on the bench will call out names x, y and z. They will know they are up next and they will then call out who they are going to replace so everyone is on the same page.
Another coach will do the same for the D (coaching staffs usually break up responsibility with one running the forwards and another running the D).

I'm guessing it will be along the lines of "Philly is done" but tmi3rd will make it sound smarter than that.

greatest OT games
There was the one Flyers played...must have been in 2000 because I was pregnant. Hubby was watching the game in the living room and I went to bed, but had the game on. I woke up in the night, it was 2-3am and the game was on...still. I thought Comcast was repeating the game, but then wondered why my husband wasn't in bed.
Went into the living room and found they were still playing!
Ah, here it is.

I really haven't followed the NHL since Bettman ruined the league but I have to pay attention now, in case they win and decide to burn down my house.

Love the Hawks. I've followed them since the 60s. It's nice to see them in the finals again.
