It's the pressure of coming up with something new.  In the Vaudeville days, you could do the same routine over and over for 20 years.  But now everybody says, "I already saw you on YouTube" or "I've seen your Comedy Central show."  Even in Carlin's heyday, he was famous because he was on TV or his albums sold.

So what do you do when you've told all of your jokes?  You hire people to write for you.  If you're Lewis Black, you can't afford that.  So you flounder around for something funny.  If you have no more life experience to draw on, you look to culture.  But you can't even do that anymore.  The culture is too fractious.  People don't listen to the same music, watch the same TV shows, etc.  So the only thing that will grab a large audience is politics.

If you have some talent, you can make that work, even if you will usually turn off somebody.  At first you try unlikeable, unpopular figures on the fringe.  Then you try those that you think your young and hip audience find unpopular.  Eventually, you slide into "applause as laughter" in which you simply mock a Republican and get applause.

That's where Lewis Black is now.

One of the reasons I have tremendous respect and support for Palin is that she represents not elites, but average Americans. I don't think she deserves sainthood, but I see how she's reacted to the attacks on her and admire her ability to fight back. She does what a lot of us want to do - point out the flaws in her opponents and sticks to her guns. She doesn't sit down and shut up. Her lack of Ivy League elitism is a breath of fresh air in politics.

Palin is an example of a strong female conservative and of what can be done if you put your mind and some hard work to it. It's nice to finally have a woman who shows that conservatives are not just the males the media harps about.

I don't understand people's negative reactions to her voice. Honestly, I'd rather listen to her talk than Mark Levin.
