General Alexander Meigs Haig Jr., Dead at 85
— Dave in Texas

Somber update: Alexander Haig has passed.

Korea. Two Silver Stars. Bronze Star with Valor device. Seven campaigns in the coldest war. Vietnam. DSC and Purple Heart. An excerpt:

When two of his companies were engaged by a large hostile force, Colonel Haig landed amid a hail of fire, personally took charge of the units, called for artillery and air fire support and succeeded in soundly defeating the insurgent force...the next day a barrage of 400 rounds was fired by the Viet Cong, but it was ineffective because of the warning and preparations by Colonel Haig. As the barrage subsided, a force three times larger than his began a series of human wave assaults on the camp. Heedless of the danger himself, Colonel Haig repeatedly braved intense hostile fire to survey the battlefield. His personal courage and determination, and his skillful employment of every defense and support tactic possible, inspired his men to fight with previously unimagined power. Although his force was outnumbered three to one, Colonel Haig succeeded in inflicting 592 casualties on the Viet Cong... (HQ US Army, Vietnam, General Orders No. 2318 (May 22, 1967)

Requiescat in pacem Soldier. Thank you.

3 I hope I kicked in a little "remember him for his remarkable service". He did fine things for our country. Even serving with Ned Almond in X Corps, which had to suck.

So I guess when Colin Powell kicks it we will get weeks of coverage saying he was the greatest general, not only in american history, but in all history. And it has nothing to do with the fact that he endorsed barack obama solely based on race.

yeah i think he was just trying to calm people down and let them know everything is alright. The media treated it like he was staging a coup and the phrase, "I am in control here" was the code phrase to set everything into action

16 Alexander Haig was a true warrior and hero and a very smart guy (as opposed to the buffoons who people call 'smart' these days). He will be very sorely missed. What I would have given for a Cheney/Haig, or Haig/Cheney, run for the White House ...

19 Just a very odd coincidence, Haig went to Lower Merion high school, which is the sister school of Harriton - the one with the web cam spying laptops that made the news a couple of days ago.

Haig was the best thing ever to come out of Lower Merion.

20 True fact about Gen. Haig:

The Quad Damage powerup was created as a tribute to him and his like.

Posted by: EC at February 20, 2010 05:58 AM (iWj1i)

21 From an old soldier's perspective, General Haig was a "soldier's soldier", the man you had every confidence in to do the right thing in a highly stressful environment.  Old soldiers and government service seldom, if ever, get along and that was undoubtedly the case for General Haig.  I'm sure he was as frustrated with government service as any man could possibly be.  And I agree, his "in charge" statement was meant to show that despite the chaos of the moment, someone had the presence of mind to think clearly and to act accordingly.

22

What is little know is that Haig tried to get the Argentinias to back down over the Falklands. He tried to prevent the war that followed but couldnt get it done.

That said I think he played a major role in switching the emphasis from a peaceful solution to backing the Brits and Thatcher. Thought Reagan himself was the major force behind that decision.

Absolutely. Haig said nothing about taking over anything, as the slimy press had tried to imply. He merely stated that the White House was not in chaos or lacking appropriate leadership. The press' twisting of Haig's actual words (cutting off the actual quote is what most of them did) was just pathetic. His quote was:

"As of now, I am in control here in the White House, pending the return of the vice president."

As usual, Haig was only being factual and reasonable.

He was telling the nation that the nation is intact.

It was leadership. A general knows the troops need to know a man is leading.

28 President Reagan had just suffered an assasination attempt, the last thing you want is for your enemies to think they have a golden opportunity to attack while things are in chaos.  Letting the USSR know that there would be a price to be paid, with a retired general watching their every move, seems like the smart thing to do.

51 General Haig received two silver stars and a Bronze Star with v Device while still a junior officer in Korea.  He was in Inchon and Chosin.

The pundits will vilify him for his comment when Reagan was shot and say nary a word about what a hero and leader he was in our military and for our nation.

Reagan is in surgery and Haitch is on a plane...fuck yes I want a warrior to take charge.  Who else was going to do it?  Wait until they could drag Tip O'Neil over to a White House he had no idea how to operate in?

The Ruski's were watching and regardless of what the piss-ants pundits said they saw the hawk-like gaze of a warrior holding down the fort until someone else could take charge.

In retrospect, you have to wonder how much of that was Nancy's doing.

Nancy has since proven to be a flaming libtard, and both of the Gipper's children by her [Patty & Ron Jr] are just hardcore nihilists [neither one of them gave the Gipper any grandchildren].

Really ironic that Reagan's only conservative children came from Jane Wyman [and I'll bet she rued the day that she ran off with Lew Ayres].

To read through the lines on his citation, "as taught", you want a 3-1 advantage when attacking. You will destroy your opponent at 3-1. Col. (Hero) Haig, as stated, was 1-3. As a believer in genes vs environment, the kids with Wyman were adopted and Nancy's were biological. So whomever genes Marueen and Michael carried were superior to those that Nancy produced. I have to say that she did love Ronnie and it always seemed that she thought the sun rose and set on him. Since I can agree there, perhaps that kind of mother warped those kids into some kind of attention seeking freaks. Just sayin'

small point but Haig was the General's Aide of General Almond X Corp. during the Korean War and was not really in harms way.  however, he did accompany General Almond when he visited the besiged perimeter of Task Force Faith but that was only an in and out trip via helicopter.

his shooting war was in Vietnam where as a battalion ? commander he participated in some of the earlier search and destroy missions.

120 was always skeptical of haig. there's something about politically ambitious military men like haig i'm wary of. i'm suspicious of the behind the scenes machinations that would bring him to the heights of power, something haig exhibited in spades. it is an elevation not based on battlefield merit or accomplishment, the way officers are promoted in the best of worlds. his "i am in control" statement, however well intentioned, was totally unnecessary at the time and confirms one's worst doubts.

Pretty in Pink---you're right. You can always notice a lib by their suppositions (and their inability to capitalize and punctuate).

The left wasn't worried about the Soviets, they like them. They admired them and they were taught in school that Reagan and his team were dangerous.

There wasn't a damn thing scary about the military unless you are a bad guy. At the time the bad guys were communists. I hate this mindset. They hate the strong me who kept and keep us safe and admire the losers, whimps, pussies, and politicians who put us in danger...Haig took an oath to uphold the constitution and meant it. Oh, and it was the real constitution not the "living document". Obama--not so much.

188 Re: "I'm in charge" The media had just spent half the time from the announcement that Reagan had been shot until Haig came storming up from the Sit Room asking, "Who's in charge?" And then when he said, as the senior member of the Executive Branch present in Washington, that he was in charge, pending the return of the Vice President, that was not the answer the media wanted. But it was the correct answer. I don't know who they wanted to be in charge - Tip?? Byrd? - but it wasn't Al Haig.

I'd like to point out to all of you who are piling onto gomm about his comments,  I SAW THE PRESS CONFERENCE where Gen. Haig made  his statement. I remember the I am in charge here line. It made me nervous, too. At the time.

I don't have to remind you all about editing, do I?

The final part of his (Haig's) statement was edited out...I didn't know that until I saw the full UNEDITED segment this morning, and that changed my opinion of General Haig quite a bit.

And, I'm no spring chicken, either. Heh...

BTW, gomm, you need to look at Mcarthur's history a little closer, 'cause IIRC, he did run for the Presidency. Didn't get the nomination.

So of the top 2 vote getters at CPAC, one wants to retreat from the world with our troops and thinks we should listen to Bin Laden as to why we were attacked. The other championed a hge big government entitlement and cant decide how he feels about life depending on what office he is running for.

And this is CPAC? The supposed pinacle of conservatism? I am glad Palin is up at the Iron Dog instead that starts tomorrow.

The Red Army Faction tried to assassinate General Haig, the Supreme Commander of NATO, with a land mine in June 1979.  His motorcade was racing through Belgium when the RAF, aka the Baader-Meinhof gang, detonated their mine a hair too late to take Haig out.

Back then, the Red Army Faction/Baader-Meinhof gang was stalking US generals in Germany to kidnap or kill them.  Generals homes on base were surrounded by bomb revetments to defend against RPG attacks.  When generals went outside base in civilian clothes, they carried a concealed pistol to defend themselves.  It was only a couple years later after the attack on Haig that US Army General Dozier was kidnapped by the Italian Red Brigade.  If you were a US general in Europe back then, you really had a target pinned on you.

Actually, Mark Sanford is kinda heroic insofar as he was the Republican to go tell the Democrats/Media to fuck themselves when they demanded he resign.

I'm sick and tired of Republicans resigning (at the behest of our political enemies) over the stupidest scandals while Democrats can lie, cheat, steal, and kill people without ever resigning.

Newt Gingrich resigned for what? Mark Foley resigned for what? Henry Hyde resigned for what? Tom Delay resigned for what?

As far as I know, Sanford's a good governor and a good conservative Republican. Cheating and lying were shitty things to do, but I'm not part of his family. From my selfish point of view, speaking strictly politically, I want Sanford to keep governing and not give in to the Democrats and the pussy-Republicans who are trying to force him out.

Sanford not resigning set a precedent. It might have chipped away a little at that awful double-standard our side has to live by while the Left does whatever they want.

I hate to break it to you Jane, but when Comcast sells to somebody else, which they inevitably will, that new owner will scour the accounts for anybody getting free stuff. We had Comcast for years and got free movie channels and a friend of mine actually got free cable, every damn channel, but when Time Warner bought them out all that stopped, they actually came out to my buddies house and tore down his cable lines and threatened him with legal action. So methinks Comcast is just not very diligent in that regard while other companies are.

LOL - In lieu of a revolution in this country, I suppose an insurrection here tonight will suffice.

376 Regarding Alexander Haig's mistake about the presidential succession: From 1886 until 1947 the succession was President, Vice-President, Secretary of State. That would be what Haig learned when he was in school. It was changed during the Truman Administration.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info, Miss Marple.

If you're bored here, you can go watch Mike Huckabee interview Michelle Obama about her fat kids.

It's a treat, I tell ya.

I'd rather die in a fire than watch a Smuckabee slobber all over a wookie..

378 Anybody see the video of Breitbart blasting the Salon reporter that called James O'Keefe a racist?

Wow, I liked the Larry O'Connor part. Breitbart does a lot of "You are the lowest life-form on the planet" but O'Connor does "Whom were you referring to when you said on your blog that Breitbart is defending a racist?"

Thanks to ALL of you homos, I'm giving up on this blog and getting out of the house to see Shutter Island. I've read all the spoilers and re-watched the trailers in light of the spoilers, so I won't be suckered by the huge-setup-cheap-payoff trick.

385 I was watching the Olympics when I noticed this smell coming from my computer. I came to check it out and discovered out it was the smell of death coming from this thread. Al Haig is less ripe.

So, is Alexander Haig still dead?

As dead as Generalissimo Francisco Franco.

Dave,

Thanks for the story about a hero.  I had no idea that General Haig was such a great man.  I guess I had been listening to the dominant media...

Haig was a real man. Anyone who had the pleasure to know him was better for it.
