— Dave in Texas Somber update: Alexander Haig has passed.
Korea. Two Silver Stars. Bronze Star with Valor device. Seven campaigns in the coldest war. Vietnam. DSC and Purple Heart. An excerpt:
When two of his companies were engaged by a large hostile force, Colonel Haig landed amid a hail of fire, personally took charge of the units, called for artillery and air fire support and succeeded in soundly defeating the insurgent force...the next day a barrage of 400 rounds was fired by the Viet Cong, but it was ineffective because of the warning and preparations by Colonel Haig. As the barrage subsided, a force three times larger than his began a series of human wave assaults on the camp. Heedless of the danger himself, Colonel Haig repeatedly braved intense hostile fire to survey the battlefield. His personal courage and determination, and his skillful employment of every defense and support tactic possible, inspired his men to fight with previously unimagined power. Although his force was outnumbered three to one, Colonel Haig succeeded in inflicting 592 casualties on the Viet Cong... (HQ US Army, Vietnam, General Orders No. 2318 (May 22, 1967)
Requiescat in pacem Soldier. Thank you.

I read Al Haig's gas meter one time. He lived in Bethesda, off River Road.
That's my brush with greatness.
RIP, General.

Unless he proved his loathing for his country after his service, the media will still show its hatred for him
So I guess when Colin Powell kicks it we will get weeks of coverage saying he was the greatest general, not only in american history, but in all history. And it has nothing to do with the fact that he endorsed barack obama solely based on race.

After reading that citation you get pissed that the media vilifies him for taking charge in the chaotic situation after Reagan was shot.
yeah i think he was just trying to calm people down and let them know everything is alright. The media treated it like he was staging a coup and the phrase, "I am in control here" was the code phrase to set everything into action

What is little know is that Haig tried to get the Argentinias to back down over the Falklands. He tried to prevent the war that followed but couldnt get it done.
That said I think he played a major role in switching the emphasis from a peaceful solution to backing the Brits and Thatcher. Thought Reagan himself was the major force behind that decision.

Absolutely. Haig said nothing about taking over anything, as the slimy press had tried to imply. He merely stated that the White House was not in chaos or lacking appropriate leadership. The press' twisting of Haig's actual words (cutting off the actual quote is what most of them did) was just pathetic. His quote was:
"As of now, I am in control here in the White House, pending the return of the vice president."
As usual, Haig was only being factual and reasonable.

good thing he didn't succeed, it was nice to the the Brits put the Argies in their place, and winning the war helped get Thatcher re-elected

He was telling the nation that the nation is intact.
It was leadership. A general knows the troops need to know a man is leading.

I too remember the press furor over Haig's comments after the assassination attempt. I was 10, I think. Gotta love Reagan for installing such a hard ass at State.
Let's be realistic, though. There were people in the administration who disliked Haig and used his comments as a means of removing him from his position.

The pundits will vilify him for his comment when Reagan was shot and say nary a word about what a hero and leader he was in our military and for our nation.
Reagan is in surgery and Haitch is on a plane...fuck yes I want a warrior to take charge. Who else was going to do it? Wait until they could drag Tip O'Neil over to a White House he had no idea how to operate in?
The Ruski's were watching and regardless of what the piss-ants pundits said they saw the hawk-like gaze of a warrior holding down the fort until someone else could take charge.

In retrospect, you have to wonder how much of that was Nancy's doing.
Nancy has since proven to be a flaming libtard, and both of the Gipper's children by her [Patty & Ron Jr] are just hardcore nihilists [neither one of them gave the Gipper any grandchildren].
Really ironic that Reagan's only conservative children came from Jane Wyman [and I'll bet she rued the day that she ran off with Lew Ayres].

To read through the lines on his citation, "as taught", you want a 3-1 advantage when attacking. You will destroy your opponent at 3-1. Col. (Hero) Haig, as stated, was 1-3. That is a Little Big Horn situation. Truly, personal leadership in action! He was the "real deal" hero, not a "political general".

Before Al Haig died officially and on the news and everything, Fox 'N Friends were going hammer and tongs after Karl Rove as a proxy for "just say NO" GOPers who would (in theory) dare to oppose the anticipated Presidential compromise bill, for lowly partisan purposes.
Sorry to be a dick about it but if Al Haig were a true patriot, he would have held off the mortal coil shuffling for at least 72 hours.

The story I heard about Jane Wyman was that she simply had no interest in living the life of a politician's wife, and made that clear to Ronald Reagan. He didn't give up his political career (thank God)......and she left.
Many decades later after Reagan died however, Wyman had only kind things to say about him personally.
BTW, I've noticed the same thing about the kids. The ones he had with Wyman turned out to be 24 Carat human beings. The ones he had with Nancy.....not so much.

As a believer in genes vs environment, the kids with Wyman were adopted and Nancy's were biological. So whomever genes Marueen and Michael carried were superior to those that Nancy produced. I have to say that she did love Ronnie and it always seemed that she thought the sun rose and set on him. Since I can agree there, perhaps that kind of mother warped those kids into some kind of attention seeking freaks. Just sayin'

small point but Haig was the General's Aide of General Almond X Corp. during the Korean War and was not really in harms way. however, he did accompany General Almond when he visited the besiged perimeter of Task Force Faith but that was only an in and out trip via helicopter.
his shooting war was in Vietnam where as a battalion ? commander he participated in some of the earlier search and destroy missions.

Hear my sword sing, as I ride across the sky
Sworn by the sacred blood of Odin onward ride.

Pretty in Pink---you're right. You can always notice a lib by their suppositions (and their inability to capitalize and punctuate).
The left wasn't worried about the Soviets, they like them. They admired them and they were taught in school that Reagan and his team were dangerous.
There wasn't a damn thing scary about the military unless you are a bad guy. At the time the bad guys were communists. I hate this mindset. They hate the strong me who kept and keep us safe and admire the losers, whimps, pussies, and politicians who put us in danger...Haig took an oath to uphold the constitution and meant it. Oh, and it was the real constitution not the "living document". Obama--not so much.

There was no "gaffe". Why don't you bother looking upthread to see what Haig actually said, instead of repeating the lame stream smear? It's only been posted 5 or 6 times, already, and it was perfectly correct and appropriate.

The remark was a non-controversy. He said "we are in charge until the Vice President gets back". Perfectly fine thing to say. The media made a production out of it. However, if Hillary got up and said we are in charge until the VP gets back, you would want someone to delay the VP. Hillary is certainly ambitious but how well do we think Biden would do in a crisis? It would at least be amusing.

As it has already been explained if you had been listening, Haig's remark was not meant for you, or anyone else domestically; it was a message to the Soviets not to try anything cute, i.e. just because Reagan was incapacitated doesn't mean there's a power vacuum. Also, I'll bet you never heard the full quote back then, just the edited version the hostile MSM chose to disseminate.

"Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the president, the vice president and the secretary of state, in that order, and should the president decide he wants to transfer the helm to the vice president, he will do so. As of now, I am in control here, in the White House, pending the return of the vice president and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course."

The Red Army Faction tried to assassinate General Haig, the Supreme Commander of NATO, with a land mine in June 1979. His motorcade was racing through Belgium when the RAF, aka the Baader-Meinhof gang, detonated their mine a hair too late to take Haig out.
Back then, the Red Army Faction/Baader-Meinhof gang was stalking US generals in Germany to kidnap or kill them. Generals homes on base were surrounded by bomb revetments to defend against RPG attacks. When generals went outside base in civilian clothes, they carried a concealed pistol to defend themselves. It was only a couple years later after the attack on Haig that US Army General Dozier was kidnapped by the Italian Red Brigade. If you were a US general in Europe back then, you really had a target pinned on you.

And, notwithstanding Mark Sanford's well documented personal meltdown, he is prepared to sue the Feds for cancelling Yucca Mountain, future nuclear waste storage facility, which impacts nuclear waste storage in South Carolina...He's going out swinging! Sad to see him done politically, he's a game rooster when it comes to fighting the good fight...

Glad I got home in time to catch Beck. And yeah, he wears on my at times, but dayum, that speech was good. And I agree with Steph about his reading of the Statue of Liberty. Gave me goosebumps.

As far as I know, Sanford's a good governor and a good conservative Republican. Cheating and lying were shitty things to do, but I'm not part of his family. From my selfish point of view, speaking strictly politically, I want Sanford to keep governing and not give in to the Democrats and the pussy-Republicans who are trying to force him out.
Sanford not resigning set a precedent. It might have chipped away a little at that awful double-standard our side has to live by while the Left does whatever they want.

I hate to break it to you Jane, but when Comcast sells to somebody else, which they inevitably will, that new owner will scour the accounts for anybody getting free stuff. We had Comcast for years and got free movie channels and a friend of mine actually got free cable, every damn channel, but when Time Warner bought them out all that stopped, they actually came out to my buddies house and tore down his cable lines and threatened him with legal action. So methinks Comcast is just not very diligent in that regard while other companies are.

Jeanne Kirkpatrick, our representative at the UN, always advocated...and remember this was in the 1980s...that for six months of the year, the UN should meet in Moscow, so that all the countries could see just what a workers paradise it was. UN management rejected that idea. Go figure.
RIP General Haig.
