Geraghty On O'Donnell: "Was It A Heist?"
— Ace

No, I don't think so, and I don't think Geraghty does either, his provocative headline aside. True, O'Donnell cashes out of the campaign with close to a million dollars (which can in fact be used to pay herself a salary in preparation for another run at office), but then, there was really no reason to spend that last million.

It was, as predicted, a lost cause:

Then again, perhaps OÂ’DonnellÂ’s campaign spending was moot, and there was no point in spending this $924,000 or so. OÂ’Donnell ultimately spent $6.1 million, a record for Delaware and almost twice what Coons spent, $3.2 million. During the brief general election campaign, she never closed the margin to less than 10 points and lost, 56.6 percent to 40 percent.

I had suspicions along these lines myself. I said, a couple of times, more in personal discussion than public discussion, I sure would like to see how much money she winds up socking away for future salary.

Honestly, I still do have these suspicions. But I can't really call this evidence for my suspicions as the case is overdetermined.

That's a very useful word I got from Kaus, meaning their are several factors at work here, any of which would be enough to predict/explain the behavior, therefore it is erroneous to claim that someone behaved as she did according to any one factor. In other words, either A (wants money) and B (lost cause) on their own would explain behavior X (keeping $1 million unspent), and since A and B were both demonstrably present, I can't claim that X happened because of A. It also could have happened because of B. Either factor would dictate behavior X, and there's no way to prove it was due to the impermissible motive.

I can't say she saved that $1 million just because she's a cynical operator and wanted to set aside a little somethin'-somethin' to pay herself a nice salary for two years, because the other factor -- what's the point of sinking another million into a hole? -- would also be plenty reason to not spend it.

Further, since I do believe she wanted that Senate seat (even just for the salary, if one is very cynical about her motives), I do believe she would have spent that last near-million had the race been close and the additional money likely to have an impact.

I think this is the final chapter in this saga. Well, there'll be more, of course (book deal, tv appearances), but this was the last big thing that would pick open scabs about the choice of O'Donnell. Given that the race was never even close, and money did not seem to be helping, it's a permissible motivation that a candidate, especially a three-time eternally quixotic candidate, would put aside some money for some other more winnable run down the road.

3 Running for U.S. Senate, losing and ending up with $1 million is a good gig if you can get it.

She could just pocket the entire amount if she wanted to.

Blame the Game, not the Playah...

The whole system is set up so Politicians can cash out.  Look at the amount of Politicians who do get elected, when poor, then after a few years in office are millionaires?

When you look at the rates of return they seem to manage off of investments? (way WAY higher than the National Average)...

And when you realize that they can pay themselves a salary, or their family members a salary from their Legal Bribe funds (called their campagin funds)?

Whole system is corrupt... but thats what happens when the only people who set up, and enforce, those rules, are the politicians who then make money off of them.

6 I watched all of her debates. She was well spoken, knew the issues and would have served well, IMHO. Doofus who won just kept sucking up to the reporters who were moderating the debate, and acting as if O'Donnell was a raving schizophrenic on a street corner. He did not comport himself well, nor display an understanding of the issues. Feminists, of whom I am not one, should have been picketing every one of his campaign appearances. There was a lot of talk about her financial situation during the campaign, about whether we could trust someone who had financial difficulties. But I say The Marxist was a trust fund baby, so never had to learn to manage money, since he has a money pump that keeps flowing regardless of what he does. Which case is more "normal"? I hope she runs again.

If she never runs and doesn't need to spend it on legal challenges or other fees pertaining to this campaign, what happens to the money? Laws vary from state to state, I believe, and really favor the candidates. As of about 1980, congress critters could take it when they retire. I think that was outlawed around 1982. If she maintains a committee, she can probably throw parties with this money, whether she actually runs or not. Caution: Don't take this as campaign or legal advise.

My conclusion here though is unlikely to spur, in and of itself, fights, since it's a shrug. I think as a general matter people are over the O'Donnell fighting. I myself just don't have too much of it in me anymore. I notice most people are over it. It has to be pointed out that the O'Donnell seat was especially critical in the case of a Republicans picking up 8 or nine senate seats; we didn't come near that mark, so, while it still would have been sweet to own a senate seat in a deep blue state, it's not like it had that added bonus of swinging the senate.

A little, but not very much.  As they say "consider the source."  People really do.  Had, say, Castle come out for O'Donnell, it might have changed something (probably not, but it might, and now we'll never know).  Similarly, had the RNC and RNSC bought adds for her, people might have listened more closely.

One of the things you sometimes have to do when people aren't listening- even though your points are good and valid- is have someone to whom they will listen say the same things.  She didn't have that.

How much difference would have made?  Somewhere between "none" and her winning.  I'm guessing closer to "none" though.

40 Well, at the very least, I'd like to see all GOP candidates who end campaigns with a surplus return any funds that they obtained from the NRSC, RNC, or other party organizations so they can be applied for other GOP candidates.

Here's why.

The money an individual donor sends to a candidate is targeted at that specific candidate.  It is highly restricted, therefore.

The money the RNC or similar groups send to a candidate is very flexible.  The donors to those groups know that what they are doing is providing money to support those groups' efforts to elect Republican Senators, Republicans, or whatever the group says it's purpose is.  Those are very valuable funds because they are not restricted to a particular race or state.

It seems to me that the RNC, NRSC, etc, could certainly attach that string (return some pro-rated amount if you have an excess after the campaign) to their funds.  I would do it in such a way that the return happens immediately (less perhaps a handling fee that the campaign can charge) and then if the candidate needs money for legal challenges  they can reapply to that group for funding to cover those expenses.

Remember that charge that the state party leveled at her? I'm not aware of it being withdrawn. Remember the compliant leveled by a political group dressed up as a consumer watchdog group? She was advised to maintain money to combat those. And she set a spending record.

And we're still playing the bullshit. I wanna see the heros here  shoot their mouths off in 2012 when Tom Carper runs for re-election and the state party here trots out another sacrifical lamb. 62 She could just pocket the entire amount if she wanted to.

This is ALL just like the other allegations about her; absolute BS.

This falls under federal law so it doesn't vary from State to State either. In general it MUST be spent only on legitimate campaign expenses, and yes that includes paying that portion of her "rent" that is attributable to her campaign office. However a campaign must be in progress for that.

If she does not spend it on legitimate campaign expenses she can either donate it to other candidate/politicians, return it to the donors (never happens), or donate it to charity.

I really don't expect ANY Dem or MFM reporter to let her pass on mis-spending it.

Most politicians when they retire with unspent campaign funds donate it to other politicians.  Heven forbid they give it to all those charities they want the tax payer to fund.

Posted by: Vic at December 06, 2010 11:36 AM (e4sSD)

63 I'll also point out that a million dollars isn't as much as it once was.  Assuming you invest in an annuity at approx 8% (I chose that because it's guaranteed to be more-or-less stable) that's less than $80,000 a year, before taxes (both Income and Capital Gains) so a good, solid income, but it won't classify her as super rich.

And she can't "invest" it- she has to set up some foundation or something to pay her a salary.   That foundation might be able to put it in some investment account (not sure what the rules on that are) but she can't do it directly.

Let's drop this mountain back to mole-hill status.

I really wish this woman would go the fuck away already.  But you just know she's going to run a campaign against Tom Carper in 2012.  And then, if by some miracle the GOP digs up an actual viable candidate who beats her in the primary, she'll go to whatever lengths necessary to smear and defame him or her while going the write-in route for the general election in order to keep that campaign cash coming in.

Because, don'tcha know, the Chris Coons seat will be up in 2014.

Nobody 'viable' is going to run for the seat against Tom Carper in 2012, because no one is viable.  He's an incumbent in a blue state during a presidential election year.  Tom Carper could act out Gore Vidal's Caligula and still win by ten points.

O'Donnell may be the only person to run.  Will she raise as much money next time?  I doubt it.

Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk at December 06, 2010 12:02 PM (TpXEI)

77 74 This wouldn't even be a story, since campaigns often have money left, if O'Donnell hadn't complained about not getting enough money from the NRSC.

78 I think Jim G. has a "sore loser" syndrome here. Given the behavior of Mark Kirk, Murkowski, and Lugar, I don't expect any better from Castle if he won. Anyway, CO and her supporters should be responsible for her loss, then Castle and his supporters should be responsible for his primary loss as well. If we really want to win in 2012, it is past time already to dwell on these issues. I have been waiting to see/hear the purely fiscal conservatives to reign in people like Karl Rove, Scarborough on their attacks on Palin if they really want to win in 2012.  I haven't heard much and that is a real disappoinment for me. These purely fiscal conservatives can talk a good talk about wanting to win, but they don't seem to walk the walk.

I watched all of her debates.

Is Delaware's Primary at a different time for presidential election years.  Because really that's the biggest thing that helped her in the money department I think.  Delaware was essentially the last contestable primary before the general and it was right up against it with really no respite between them.  So I really doubt she raises near as much money.

Posted by: buzzion

That's the normal time. But they rarely happen. That's part of what fell out here. Would things have been different from say Florida, Utah or Alaska if Delware went earlier? probably. But the point remains that voters here saw that happening.

Stage 1, pre-primary: We're Going to Get The RINO Bastards!  Fuck Them and Purge Them!  Stage 2, post-primary: Unite Around Our Republican Nominee!  We Can Win This if We Hang Together!  Stage 3, in the days after the election:  We Didn't Really Want to Win This Seat Anyway!  Stopping Mike Castle Was Victory Enough!

The split created by the O'Donnell candidacy will never heal until her followers have decided they're ready to learn something from its failure.  So far I'm seeing little indication of that.

Yeah, they're glass-jawed punks.  Which makes me wonder why I'm expecting them to grow up and learn something from all this.

Maybe we better get used to a second term of Obama now; the O'Donnellista faction just keeps on telegraphing that they just won't have it any other way....

Agreed. What bothers me most I suppose is thatsome seem to be embracing the idiotic leftist practice of ignoring inconvenient facts and hammering crap that was covered.

We were told by many that O'Donnell was a terrible candidate and that Castle was Mr. Wonderful. That last was tempered as the weeks went on, but the fact that he lost the primary, when he had such advantages, is disconcerting. For those who wanted him to win, some feel disappointment and annoyance ( T.Coddington for one). While others ,like myself, were mystified at how such a local powerhouse could be caught flatfooted. For the former group, that disappointment seems to be manifesting itself in the hostility that we're seeing.

I agree that a great opportunity was lost. My biggest concern is what,, if anything, will the state party learn from it.

But if you really want a lesson from this debacle, it's simple: Pride goeth before the fall. I wanted Castle to win the primary but, as Blue Hen explained, he thought he could waltz right in and be handed the seat. He turned out to be wrong. He didn't do a damn thing to win the primary and frankly I still have yet to see any real admission of such by most of the CO haters. They go on about how awful she was, and throw out purity straw-men, but they never talk about how little Castle did. Yes, CO sucked as a candidate. Yes she got beaten badly. But she still beat Castle.

172  @ 176 -- The difference is, Castle wasn't "trotted" out.  He'd actually demonstrated an ability to win races.  Unfortunately, a gaggle of fatuous oafs decided to throw their support to Chris Coons vicariously through a candidate who had never won a statewide election.  Now, it seems they're not quite as proud of the outcome as they'd hoped to be and just want everyone to shut the hell up about it.

I'm still looking for all those "NO MORE SOCONS!!!" comments and posts so I can muster my army of radical FisCons and engage you on the battlefield.  I guess Ace must have deleted all those comments in order to foil my nefarious plot to purge you and your ilk from the great brotherhood of conservatism.

Fine, let me do it more slowly for your sake then. Rove and Scaborough are as bad as Levin if not worse in terms of short-sightedness. The so-called pure fiscal conservatives are as bad. So we should treat Levin, Rove, Scaborough, and those foul-mouthed "pure fiscal conservatives" in the same way. Hope that helps!

187  @ 190 -- You want to undermine CO simply because of Levin.

No-no-no ... you have things exactly backwards.  You see, Levin is the one who elevated this to a scorched-earth, bloodletting, read-the-bastards-out-of-the-movement purge when he decided that anyone who deigned to question his wisdom was not only a loser, wannabe, cocktail party-mingling pretender, but mentally unsound, incompetent, and generally unworthy of even a tiny shred of respect to boot.

O'Donnell would have failed to get elected with or without Levin's help, or Karl Rove's input.  She can't be undermined by me or anyone else any more than she undermined herself.  There was no way she was going to win.  She was scratched at the starting gate.  She could scarcely be undermined any further.

But Levin ... that guy still has some accounting to do.  And, until he does it, I don't think it serves the cause to conservatism to pretend it didn't happen.  After all, if he did it this time, he'll do it again in two years, when there's a hell of a lot more on the line.  And, maybe next time, it'll be SoCons who take it in the chops ... you know, like the ones who support Mike Huckabee.  And, like it or not, there's quite a few of them.

Posted by: Walt Gilbert at December 06, 2010 06:11 PM (PmZ9N)

188 I'd just like to point out that had COD gotten closer or even so close to have a recount, she would have needed that money and more.  There are still going to be thousands upon thousands in bills to wrap up the campaign.

Additionally, had she gotten elected, she would have needed the money for the near necessary media support, setting up offices and more prior to her actually taking office with a budget.

I would suggest that a campaign that ends up broke is a fiscally irresponsible campaign and COD waging a record breaking campaign and ending up with reserves says more about her as a person/candidate that the hundreds of other pols who write checks they can't back and then have to fund-raise and make political deals to retire that debt before they take office (effectively starting the corruption before the office is actually held).

Imho...forget about this, and bury whatever grievances you have with one another; get together and at least agree to a canidate both sides of the GOP can stomach (not love, just live with) and work like the devil to get them elected in '12 (and get some more power in the Congress).

Just go with canidates who will do well for the country -- that's all. Not do well for you or your particular group -- the whole country. We're going to need it; this country can't cope with another 4 years of this.

As for O'Donnell, she needs to be off the map for good.  For now, she can be politely ignored; if she demands attention she needs to be taken out of the equation impolitely.

Same goes for Castle -- just to be fair.  Delaware has less than two years to find themselves a better Republican, or you'll wind up keeping your Democrats (who don't seem to be so good for your state or your country) -- so maybe the time of in-fighting is over, no?

Posted by: unknown jane at December 06, 2010 06:20 PM (5/yRG)

190 The Castle folks simply can not accept that Castle lost the primary. Remember, the pitch was Republicans must take as many Senate seats as possible, even RINOs were ok, because Senate majority yields a great deal of power. Oh my! Instead of heeding their own words the Castle-bots refought the primary or took their balls and went home. And as we see today they still are in a snit.
