— Gabriel Malor Bold words from Baghdad Bobby Gibbs:
"We'll have the votes when the House votes, I think, within the next week," Gibbs said on "Fox News Sunday."Gibbs added that those on next week's Sunday talk shows "will be talking about healthcare not as a presidential proposal but I think as the law of the land."
President Barack Obama will look to campaign on the new healthcare law in midterm elections, Gibbs said.
"We believe healthcare reform is going to pass, and once it passes we're happy to have the 2010 elections be about the achievement of healthcare reform," Gibbs said.
I suppose there's no other spin he can put on it, since his masters demand that he stand in front of the cameras and smile every day. But Gibbsy is simply out of his mind if he thinks that passing the Democrats' healthcare bill is going to be good for his team in the 2010 elections.
This "projection" of the White House is so far from reality, it can only mean that they're still trying to pressure reluctant congressmen into voting for it. The thinking is that if they repeat and repeat that this will be good come November, maybe a foolish congresscritter or two will actually believe it.
I wouldn't get too worked up about his claim that healthcare reform will pass within the week either. First, he's just repeating the White House deadline in other language. Remember, first the deadline was March 18. Then, when that clearly wasn't happening, the President delayed his trip to Australia until March 21...seven days from today. Also known as a week.
Second, Gibbsy is credibility-challenged (and how!) as a general matter. But even within his statement this morning, he's not given us any reason to believe him. His delusional "this is good for us in November" statement has no connection to reality. Nor does his claim that the president will campaign on it during the midterms. Not with every Dem candidate fleeing from him after his disastrous performances in Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.
So, why should we believe Gibbs' simultaneous claim that "this will pass within a week?"

Two things:
(1) "I think"? Mr. Gibbs, I think is not "I know" by orders of magnitude.
(2) The Democrats must be channeling the spirit of Field-Marshal Haig on this. It is the only explanation for thier focus on this bill.

It makes no difference.
They pass Obama-care, your entire country's electorate moves left long-term, and you lose.
Get it?
The only reasons why countries like Canada or Britain get Conservative governments elected at all is vote-splitting in a > 2-party system. And our "Conservative" parties are to the left of the GOP.
So, if Obama does this and nothing else, he has won, huge, for his preferred ideology. The time to stop him is now. Patting yourself on the back about 2010 pick-ups may feel great, but it's a hollow, transient victory.

Gibbs is not crazy. He only sounds crazy if you only listen to conservatives. There are still far too many people who believe liberal crap.
Also...
- The American public is fickle and the elections are 9 months away
- They have the MSM to lie for them and tell the public the economy's improving. If the economy "improves," they won't lose the majority, and they'll sell the improvement in part due to the new health care
- They already have the economy being lied about by the people who make up the numbers, which they then "adjust" when people aren't looking
- Look around the Internet, there are STILL tons of people who steadfastly believe the majority wants a single payer system
- They will next push amnesty to get more voters
- They have lots of voter fraud and any elections that are close will be stolen
- Once a bill gets passed, the public normally just ends up accepting it with a "it's done, let's make the best of it" attitude
- I have NO FAITH in an American public that was STUPID enough to not only give us Obama, but a ridiculous RINO alternative like McCain
Posted by: barbelle at March 14, 2010 08:40 AM (qF8q3)
I think they've finally gotten to the point that having a vote is what they want, regardless of the outcome:
(1) Obama has made it clear that he is not going to let this go, there is a lot of ego involved here and in part he wants to do what Bill Clinton couldn't.
(2) If it passes and is enacted, then it's another ratcheting up of the entitlements, which puts libs in the driver's seat, even if the Democrat brand is trashed.
(3) If it passes and is killed by SCOTUS, they'll blame an "activist" court and tell their consituents they tried, even though they were thwarted by those dastardly conservatives. They'll sacrifice the blue dogs but figure enough of them can weasel out if it isn't an actual law.
(4) If it doesn't pass, well this thing has to end sometime before November and the libs will be on record voting for it, the blue dogs will be on record voting against it and the anger of the American public will be mollified.
I really don't see how they lose bringing this to a vote.
One of the things that I was afraid of is that when SCOTUS declares laws unconstitutional, it's very narrow. So, although the forcing to buy health insurance would be cut out, everything else would stay. But if it passes via the Slaughter rule, the court will kill the whole thing.

Blazer, while I share your concern over another business being killed, that aspect is pretty far down my list of what is off-pissing in this hidden publicity.
Thing One as I see it is that the death panels will now decide who goes to college, any form of college which requires financing--which, we are now given to understand, is everything. It also offers Our Masters the right to set all curricula, on the principle of the Queen's farthing: a tortuous way to get back at Hillsdale. Then, it continues our legacy of shame of attaching important issues to other bills, confusing the issues, obfuscating debate, and turning us into a nation of trash-talking ballgame fans.
The financing industry might well survive losing the education-loan business; once the insiders control education access, we lose any [non-pitchfork] chance of restoring the cultural norms of the old republic.

Not so Blazer. "This bill" they are talking about voting on is the Dec 24th Senate bill. The House MUST pass it with no changes in order to provide a bill that can be "reconciled".
When it is passed then they intend to (promised) pass a separate bill under "reconcilliation" to amend the act. It is that bill that they wish to add the nationalization" of student loans to.

But this is a double-cross. There's no question you're being double-crossed, and I'm going to address you. It won't take very long, but I know how much you Democrats in the House really want this. I know how much you don't like the Senate bill. I also know how you're being lied to that the Senate bill's going to be modified down the road. It ain't going to happen in reconciliation. Folks, it can't happen in reconciliation. There's not enough time for the CBO to score things and the CBO has to be involved if there's reconciliation. So there will not be reconciliation. You're being lied to about that. I can tell you right now, there will not be reconciliation. Obama's going to sign it and once he signs it he's going to drop it. There will be no mention of health care after that signing ceremony. They'll move on to other things like immigration, reviving cap and trade, card check, whatever it is, but there will be not one mention of it.
They're not going to take this bill and start immediately adding things to it because they want all discussion of health care to stop. So you Democrats in the House, you are being sandbagged and double-crossed. They are going to sign this bill, and because of your electoral fortunes in November, there will not be one fix made to this bill. Not one thing will be added to it after Obama signs it, and there will not be reconciliation. And you guys are going to lose the House and the Senate. Well, certainly the House. You're going to lose it in November. And once you lose the House in November, there aren't isn't going to be anything added to this bill. So let me just tell you now -- and for those of you in the Drive-By Media monitoring this show, please don't take me out of context here and please don't misquote me. Because I mean this. Please get this right. Please tell members of the House and the Democrat caucus they are being double-crossed by their Speaker, by Rahm Emanuel and by the president when they're told that there will be reconciliation.
There is not time for budget reconciliation before March 18th because the CBO can't get in there and score it. The process is going to take too long. It will never, ever happen. If you sign the Senate bill, Obama signs it within hours, and that's the end of any health care discussion for the rest of this year. It's too big a negative, too big a drag on election chances in November. So nothing's going to be added to it. None of what you want, none of what they're promising you will be added will be added. It won't even be discussed. You're dead. You're gone. You have been used just like Obama is willing to use anybody in your party and then you're going to lose the House in November all because of this, and the Republicans are not going to start adding things you want in subsequent health care legislation. This is it. You don't like it. This isn't leftist enough for you. If you pass the Senate bill, that's what you're going to have, and that's the best you are ever going to get.
Don't doubt me.

The idiots in Congress have already voted on these bills (along with lots of other unbelievable votes) so they have nothing to lose. They are done, anyway. Senior adviser David Axelrod says the White House only objected to deals that affected just one state, such one involving Medicaid and Nebraska that's being cut from the legislation.
Axelrod says that deals that could apply to more than one state are OK.
That means deals pushed by senators from Montana and Connecticut would be fine because they're written in such a way that other states could potentially qualify.
It's a change from a couple days ago when press secretary Robert Gibbs singled out the Montana and Connecticut deals and said President Barack Obama wanted them gone.
Axelrod spoke on ABC's "This Week." @breitbart

If things happen like they have happened in the past it will go like this if it passes:
Huge tax increases begin immediately on small buisnesses and the "rich".
Huge tax increases cause an additional spike in layoffs and unemployment. Current real unemployment if counted the same way it was in the 1930s would be 17%. It will reach more than 25% in a short period of time which is as high as it got during the 'great depression".
No additonal people will be covered because that part of the plan doesn't take effect until 4 years later. Of course no media will talk about that.
Everyone but the utterly clueless who are on medical tracks in college will either drop out of school or switch tracks.
Initially about 5% of current doctors will close up shop and retire. As more and more who were trying to tough it out see the futility they too will close up shop. Within two years doctors will be assigned to lucky lottery winners.
Private hospitals all across the country will start closing and eventually the only hospitals left will be government ran.
"Fixes" will be passed left and right as conditons deteriorate. Before the 4 years are up we will be in the same position Canada is in. We will have the commie dream of nationalized healthcare.
But their efforts will be thwarted in one respect. It will no longer be a significant portion of the economy (which will be even further in the hole than now).
Will the Republicans be able to repeal it???? Not if things go like they have gone in the past. Anything can happen though because things in the past year have not gone like things in the past. We are breaking new ground.

If we're giving up on the Supreme Court, then what's the point? I know they have their predictable philosophical alignments, but there is simply no Constitutional way to justify the Slaughter gambit. I can't imagine a majority of the Court agreeing to simply throw out the Constitutional provisions for law-making. We'd essentially live in a nation without laws from that moment forward. At least "laws" as we've understood them for 220 years.
Anything's possible of course, but I'm convinced this "HC reform" is going down, down, down... It's just a matter of how long it takes and how ugly Obama wants it to get.

I thought it was well-understood that we were no longer a nation of laws as our last SCOTUS justice was chosen on the basis of her empathetic abilities, which our federal government had deemed more important than a clear understanding of written law and its application. The GOP (thanks mostly to Lady Lindsey) let the wise, empathetic Latina fly through confirmation, and that sealed the deal on whether we are a nation of laws.

So, the SCOTUS will continue to treat the Constitution more like a guideline than a rule since at least half of them have been getting away with it for 40 years.

How about taking away all the shit from the Left Democrat billionaires like Buffet, Soros and Bill Gates?
Those hypocritical fuckers think that taxes aren't high enough on young professionals, entepreneurs and rival businesses, and they hobnob and kiss the Leftist Democrat's asses, as well as fund them to the tune of many millions, while the rest of us are taxed to pieces.
At least numero uno Carlos Slim is truthful and says that all this Santa Claus shit that Buffet and Gates go on about is garbage. Let's send their money to him.

Polls show that the American people do not want this - especially on party-line vote.
The Republicans have a years worth of tape revealing democrat lies, backroom deals, no-CSpan, tax-payer gauging, waste, and fraud, and complete lies about what this bill will actually acomplish.
The dems can pep rally themselves with the blind-faith party faithful, but a majority of the American people have spoken- and they do not want this.

We'd essentially live in a nation without laws from that moment forward. At least "laws" as we've understood them for 220 years.
We have been there since the 30s with the Supreme Court. They are just more open about it now. Two of the members are just like Obama, they really don't give a flying shit about the Constitution and will vote to uphold anything that has a socialist or communist ring to it, as well as anything that harms the U.S. Two are along the same tract, but no as far. They use Stare Decisis to advance the "rubber" Consitution theory by stretching it one ruling at a time until white = black and up = down. That is how Kelo was passed.
There are 4 justices who largely oppose this and one who has some kind of ego/phycological problem. He voites the opposite of the way he thinks Scalia votes and he believes there should always be at least one flip-flopper. But even given that, we are at a period with the most conservative court we have had since FDR entered office.
Let us pray that the 4 good ones remain in good health for at least the next 3 years.

Of course it will pass. All this is just a Kabuki play where the "Blue Dogs" agonize about their votes. Those fucker are bought and sold by the Left and are just there to keep the majority. They don't give a scintilla about their conservative districts. They'll peel off just enough retirees to pass the bill, then save the others' seats by allowing them to vote "no". It's all horseshit, and we should call it that..
It's all just a matter of how to lose as few seats as they can in 2010, while the real job is destroying our will for a free nation.
Far as I am concerned the Blue Dogs are all scum and liars. If not, why the hell are they Democrats in the first place?
The abortion issue is a bullshit figleaf issue for the "Blue Dogs", compared to the larger issue of wealth, freedom and security.

He wants a fuckhead RINO party, with him as its leader. We're better off with JD Hayworth kicking him off the AZ Senate ticket, even if it means losing that seat in the general. We'll never get to a real majority with his shenanegans.

yes... I believe it. NO republican has ever come out with even a hint at this... because if they did.. it would just be assumed it would pass and the outrage of townhall stuff would stop... and just accepted.

Well, first they have to vote to allow the Slaughter rule, right? It's possible that in all of the vote counting, the Dems have overlooked that little detail. I don't know what the vote count has to be on that, but I was under the impression that to change the rules, it has to be by a 2/3 majority when Congress is already in session.
It's possible that all of this "we're close to getting all of the votes that we need" is just a big distraction so that we won't pay any attention to "the man behind the curtain (the vote to invoke the Slaughter rule)". You know - "We've got the votes for the Healthcare Bill via the Slaughter rule IF ONLY the Slaughter rule passes a vote".

Vic called it. McCain is full of shit.
They do not have the votes to pass it. Here is the latest from The Hill newspaperÂ’s Whip Count:
Thirty-four House Democrats are either firm no votes or leaning no, according to The HillÂ’s whip list. Dozens more are undecided.
The list of Democratic members who havenÂ’t committed ranges widely, from liberal Reps. Michael Capuano (Mass.) and Anthony Weiner (N.Y.) to centrist Reps. Jason Altmire (Pa.) and Chris Carney (Pa.).
Two committee chairmen — Reps. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) — say they are firm nos and three others, Reps. John Spratt (D-S.C.), Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) and Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.), are undecided.
If every House member votes and all Republicans reject the bill as expected, Pelosi can only afford 37 Democratic defections.

Anytime McShame opens his traitorous mouth, he ought to be assaulted with questions about his butt-budd's new shamnesty push and not allowed to get away from that. Then he needs to be asked how he feels for having destroyed the GOP with his insane shamnesty, and whether he feels guilty about it. When he stammers through that, he needs to be asked why he thought The Precedent would make a good Chief Executive and whether someone as dumb as McShame obviously is shoiul dreally be in government, at all.
McShame is the worst. He is a traitor and needs to be tossed out of office this year.

3) I called the VA gov's office to thank them for signing into law that the state will not abide by the fed. deathcare mandates. I also called the VA atty general's office to thank the man for standing up for states't right and blocking this illegal PO$ bill. I know there are many other states who will be doing the same thing, my state is one of them. If you guys get a chance, I would urge you all to call the VA's gov's office to thank him for signing that no-federal mandate law and to thank the VA's AG office also for preparing to file suit against this illegal legislation.

For example, last week Democratic Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado offered a do-nothing amendment that purported to protect Medicare from cuts. It was a classic congressional fig-leaf amendment for ObamaCare supporters to hide behind.
The amendment was carefully and narrowly crafted with much hortatory language about not cutting guaranteed Medicare benefits but the amendment actually does NOTHING to change provisions in the bill that WILL cut Medicare by hundreds of billions of dollars. Behind the cover of this Senate fig-leaf amendment—political cover for the Democrats, which all 40 Republicans voted in favor of—the Reid bill will undermine Medicare Advantage plans and squeeze the life out of Medicare by putting doctors, hospitals and other medical providers in a reimbursement vice that fixes prices and leads to Medicare rationing.
Rather than filibustering this amendment to expose the duplicity and deception behind it; rather than insisting on unlimited debate on the amendment and forcing Harry Reid to file a cloture petition to shut off debate, which would have guaranteed two days of debate, deliberation and sunshine on the amendment; rather than voting against the amendment to expose the shenanigans behind it; the Republican Leadership instead agreed to wrap up the amendment with only a few hours debate.
In exchange for this Republican complicity in providing Democrats political cover, the Democratic Leadership graciously allowed Republicans an amendment to be offered by Arizona Senator John McCain that would recommit the Reid Bill to committee and strip out provisions that actually DO cut Medicare. Republicans knew 20 Democrats/Independents would never vote with them to recommit the bill (it would have taken 60 votes to do so). Yet, Republicans traded off two days worth of debate and voted for a fig-leaf amendment to provide ObamaCare supporters political cover in order to be allowed to offer a “message amendment” of their own, which misled the public into believing Republicans are trying to fight the bill when in fact they are facilitating its ultimate passage before the New Year.
The Bennet amendment passed with only hours of debate by a vote of 100 to zero. Then, the McCain amendment to recommit the Reid Bill to Committee in order to actually strip out provisions of the bill that DO cut Medicare—think of it as an amendment to actually implement the do-nothing amendment that just passed by 100 votes—was defeated on a virtual party-line vote. Only two Democrats (Jim Webb-Va. and Ben Nelson-Neb.) were given free passes from the Democratic Leadership to vote in favor of it. Message sent: “Republicans are allowing themselves to be played as the Democrats’ useful idiots.”

"Stevens and Breyer are in the liberal pocket, too."
Stevens and Breyer are both expansionists when it comes to federal power, but the key to understanding why they and even Sotomayor and Ginsburg might vote to kill this thing comes down to pure institutional power politics: they are judicial supremacists and would be very happy to show both Congress and the White House exactly who they think is really boss. Especially after being publicly told to go fuck themselves.
The liberal Justices are happy to endorse liberal policies when it comes down to interpreting the relatively vague language of Commerce Clause, or the 2nd Amendment, or what's an "unreasonable" search or seizure, or what's "cruel and usual punishment," or a taking for "public use." Why? BECAUSE IT INCREASES THE COURT'S POWER. Here, conversely, if they were asked to OK the Slaughter Rule, which flies in the face of the requirement for recorded votes on identical bills prior to presentment, I think it VERY unlikely they would back the political branches at their own expense.

"Well, first they have to vote to allow the Slaughter rule, right?"
Yes. My understanding is that a rule of this sort requires a majority of those voting IF a recorded vote is called for. I can't figure that out for certain because, conveniently, the full Rules of the House, unlike the Rules of the Senate, appear to be nowhere to be found online: the only thing online is the resolution readopting and amending them at the start of the 111th Congress.
"I don't know what the vote count has to be on that, but I was under the impression that to change the rules, it has to be by a 2/3 majority when Congress is already in session."
That's incorrect due to the error of terminology I've noted as causing continued confusion. The Slaughter rule is not an attempt to amend the Rules of the House. I know the Senate Rules require a 2/3 vote to amend, not sure about the House Rules. But a "rule" in this context means ot one of the standing rules, but a stand-alone resolution governing debate on a particular bill or group of bills. These usually specific debate time for proponents and opponents and what amendments are in order. Such rules are how the House governs its business and why the Rules Committee is so powerful.
That's correct, or at least my understanding.
If some Congressional scholar can weigh in on this, that would be great - I'm a simple analyst....

What is an impeachable offense ("high crimes and misdemeanors") is whatever the House chooses to regard as an impeachable offense. It's the quintessential example of a political question. Moreover, impeachment is for the executive and judicial branches: members of the House and Senate are not subject to impeachment, but to expulsion by a 2/3 vote of their own chamber. See, e.g., Jim "Beam Me Up, Mr. Speaker" Traficant.
Posted by: Dave J. at March 14, 2010 11:24 AM (DCQ0q)
The whole debate over the “Slaughter Rule” strategy misses one point: it’s a special rule, and the House would have to vote to pass it. Nobody is going to be able to claim they didn’t know what they were voting for, no matter how it is structured.
Despite some positive recent data, the economic outlook for the summer is for a drop in GDP as a result of the huge tax increase caused by allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire. This probably means the unemployment rate either rises or at least doesnÂ’t fall, leaving Obama vulnerable to the charge he neglected the economy to force health care down AmericaÂ’s throat.
The striking thing is the number of Democrats, both in House and Senate, who seem willing to risk their seats to perpetrate this travesty. Even Obama canÂ’t guarantee them all a cushy federal job, not for longer than January of 2013. Are so many of them so committed to socialized medicine that they will give up their cushy and prestigious jobs to pass it?

It's not that the dems are committed to socialized medicine. This is all being pushed by The Precedent, and no one else. If it had been left to normal dems, the health scare would have died around the Town Halls, if not before. No, it was The Indonesian Imbecile, who holds us and our institutions in nothing but contempt, who pushed this zombie legislation over and over and over. The dems are now committed , because they have already been pushed (and bribed) into making too many terrible votes, so they are hanging in the wind, anyway.
Make no mistake about it, this un-American and insane way of pushing legislation through has never been seen before in our history, because we have always had natural born Americans in the Presidency - people who were still subconsciously bound by the deepest constraints of our traditions. It was the introduction of the Indonesian and his hate for our systems and traditions that has brought this calamity upon us, with the dems being nothing more than useful idiots who will be jettisoned and used as canon fodder the minute their legislative usefulness ends. But, they are dead, anyway, thanks to their earlier votes, so they are in for the ride, no matter how it goes.
This is why the Founders put the "natural born citizen" clause in. It was not a guarantee to stop someone with no American sensibilities, and nothing but unbridled hate for our nation, from getting in charge of the Executive, but it was the best rule of thumb they could come up with. We intentionally ignored this proviso and are getting exactly what the Founders had tried so hard to avert.

The Hill reporting this as of today 1300EST:
House Democrats not on this list are expected to vote yes. However, some members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus who are not mentioned below have threatened to vote no unless the Senate's immigration-related provisions are changed.
All House Republicans are expected to vote no.
If every member votes and all GOP lawmakers vote no, the maximum amount of Democratic defections to pass a bill is 37, which would lead to a 216-215 tally.
Firm No, Leaning No, Likely No(35)

The idiots in the GOP, to a large extent. They couldn't be bothered to vehemently argue against the un-Constitiutional nature of the health scare, so they relied on economic arguments, instead, and kept looking to the CBO to kill the first few iterations of the bill(s). Short-sighted on their part, as this legislation should have been opposed because it's ILLEGAL, not because it doesn't make economic sense - though they didn't even make that argument very well, either.
