Gloom, Despair, and Agony On Me!
— Monty

The G20, meeting in Busan, South Korea, failed to reach a consensus on how to deal with the ongoing financial crisis. Geithner & Co. want everyone to focus on their domestic markets rather than relying on exports to drive their economies (Keynes forever, baby!). But European leaders are balking -- mainly because most of them cannot grow their economies by focusing on their domestic markets. Germany is a good example: their economy, like China's, is founded on exports. Take away the export market and the German economy collapses. The Europeans are also right in the middle of a huge headache caused by a decade of profligate spending, and they're in no mood for a "hair of the dog" speech.

Germany, in fact, may be precipitating the fall of the Euro sooner rather than later. Der Spiegel is reporting that the German Federal Constitutional Court may block Germany's portion of the EU bailout package (via ZH), which would basically sink the whole thing. I think Germany is simply positioning itself to leave the Euro and go back to the Deutschmark -- many Germans were against the Euro project from the beginning, and being told that they have to bail out their more profligate neighbors is causing a massive political backlash.

Meanwhile, back on our own shores, Commodore Bernanke of the USS Keynes says: "Ramming speed!" And in a bit of (surely unintentional) hilarity, Bammer's vaunted Debt Commission is broke. Remember: the first time is tragedy, the second time is farce. The Depression was a tragedy, so this must be the farce.

Unsurprisingly, the futures for the Dow and S&P 500 are down as of this writing. The Euro took another shot to the nuts: it's sitting at $1.19 against the US dollar, and is almost sure to fall further given the failure of the G20 talks.

3 I don't know, if the international community "failed to reach a consensus" that means that some of them aren't going along with Obama's idiocy, which is good at least for them.  Whatever's left of America will have someone to trade with.  Also, different nations doing different things means the survivors can observe which worked and not go the big government road again.

For at least a generation.

16 The 90's and 00's were actually pretty atypical for postwar European economies -- the Europeans, particularly the French and Germans, tended to be "hard money" types. Understandably so, given their experiences during and after World War II and the subsequent Bretton Woods system (where they could like the US Dollar or they could love it, but that was it). But the Euro project turned on the spigots, and the Europeans, like their American counterparts, spent like the wind, baby. The German situation is rich in irony. The German volk are angry at the profligate Greeks and don't want to bail their spendthrift asses out of the jam they got themselves into. Understandable. Yet if the Germans reject a bailout, German banks and businesses are going to take a huge financial hit -- maybe a fatal one. Because Germany's economy depends on exports, which in turn means robust trade. If the Eurozone falls apart, so does a lot of Germany's trade. European banks are hiding a lot of ugly shit off their balance sheets, and if the Euro goes down, all that ugly debt will shoot to the surface. You think that Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Hungary are bad? Wait 'til you see the bad loans on the books of German and French banks.

38 Re European bank debt: remember that Europeans (sovereigns and individuals alike) borrowed billions of Euros when it was trading around $1.50. Now it's around $1.19, and heading lower. This is the horrendous pain of deflation, kids: European borrowers now owe about 30% more than they did a month ago, even if they don't borrow another dime. This is, in a nutshell, why Greece and probably Spain will have to default at some point. The math is pitiless -- barring some extraordinary uptick in the economy that doesn't look very likely at present, servicing that debt will eat up a huge portion of GDP for those countries for years to come. Austerity and taxation won't solve the problem -- default is really the only solution.

This story is interesting.
NJ Dems have majorities in the state houses but don't have the guts to stop Christie's budget. They don't want to vote for it, and don't want to be blamed for scuttling it. So what they do? They used their majorities to force some rules that make the Republican minority own the budget. They will provide just a handful of votes, enough for the budget to pass, and then howl like hyenas when it passes.

59 I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago.

I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why Monty insists on denying that the magical Skittles shitting unicorns will save the world economy. I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessnes were just too much. I think my daughter could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "Honey, I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..."

When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Daddy" she said, "why is Monty so mean?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. She just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.

131 so just confirm for me that a gallon jug of Val-U-Rite would cost about one Cretin. In the Moron Nation, we do not speak of vodka's costs in terms of certain currencies. Only in relative weights and measures. For example: a quart bottle of Val-U-Rite is worth ten packs of filterless smokes, one sub-par blowjob by a past-her-prime hooker, or an "All The Trimmin's" dinner at Dr. Hogly Wogly's Tyler Texas Pit BBQ. In this scenario, one Cretin serves as a place-holder for all these transactions. However, this exchange-rate may float according to local conditions (lack of available hookers, smoking ordinances, what have you).

143 These ongoing fiscal bailouts need to be properly labels as "Socialist Union Bailouts". (SUBs)

It's not a bail out of Greece, it's a bailout of the socialist union in Greece.  Make no mistake, these same socialist union conditions exist elsewhere, including in many US States, counties, and cities as well as the Federal Government.

It shouldn't go without mention that a big chunk of the mortgage bailout crisis in the US was related to the CRAs attempt to socialize housing, by passing out 'free' homes to those who clearly had little to no means to actually buy those home...

149 I've been hearing (mainly in the ZH forums, but elsewhere as well) that the ECB is intentionally driving the Euro down against the USD, to stimulate the export market. I don't see it, and for a simple reason: the borrowed billions when the Euro was at $1.50, and those loans will still need to be repaid. Europe's nations are all broke, and the usual export market -- America -- isn't going to bail them out this time. So who are they going to export to? China can easily undercut any European advantage on export prices, and Europe itself is a primary export market for China, so a collapse in individual spending in Europe will have a knock-on effect in China. Which is to say: consumers are tightening their belts everywhere, which makes this "We'll grow our export business!" logic sound a little hollow to me.

171 Been hitting the financial sites, have yet to hear a single interesting way out of this box. Everyone is struggling to find a way to get out of debt without, you know, actually paying off the debt. The usual route is to default, but Eurozone countries can't default (well, they can, but they'll wallpaper it over by calling it a 'restructuring' rather than a default). America can't default because we're the world's reserve currency -- people are still buying our T-Bills and Treasuries as fast as we can print them. It won't last, of course -- nothing ever does. Of course we'll default, sooner or later; reality will assert itself. But I suspect that America will win the "race to the bottom": the Euro will collapse first, followed by China's Yuan. We'll have maybe a five-year window to get serious about entitlement reform and reducing the size of government: after that, if we do nothing, then default is mathematically certain. Once our debt-to-GDP climbs over 100%, servicing that enormous debt will simply become impossible. Greece and California are stark examples of what can happen, but remember: Greece can get bailed out by the ECB and the IMF; California can get bailed out by the Federal Government. But who can bail out the Federal Government? Nobody. We're King of the Mountain. The problem is, though, that when we get knocked off no one is going to take our place.

177 What would be the German tactical method of pulling out of the Euro?  They have to do it fast, essentially overnight.  Can't do that with retail transactions - so it has to coincide with a general economic holiday?  Any good 3 day weekends in Germany coming up?  If a whiff of credible news about new DM coinage or paper production leaks - the Euro implodes same day.

So -- Saturday morning announce the Euro is only good for transactions up to a 10E note, everything else must be electronic,  bars and hookers hardest hit.  Citizens can redeem 5K E - businesses upto 100K E on Monday.  Can they let retailers use dollars or pounds notes until DMs can be circulated?  Can the electronic banking (devit/credit card system in Europe handle going cashless?)

189 They have to do it fast, essentially overnight. I was wondering if maybe the Bilderberg schmooze-fest wasn't a way for the principals to meet and figure out how to break up the Euro without causing a financial collapse. It's conspiracy-theorizing, of course, but I do wonder. No one wants to be left holding the bag, and it's pretty clear that Germany is halfway out the door already. The problem is the massive interconnected indebtedness of the various Central Banks. All those debts are denominated in Euros; I'm not sure how a reversion to national currencies would work out (do you convert a Greek loan from a German bank into DM or drachmas?).

It's displacement.

They cannot admit to a crack in the world view, or the whole thing falls to pieces. Bit by bit, some may come to see parts of reality, but there is essentially no hope for most.

And consider the East Germans who lived for years with the threat of the Stasi, etc, who still yearn for the paternalistic dictatorship of the East German Vaterland.

Or consider the always insane James Carville, who has started to complain about Obama and the status of the Gulf. Carville, this is who you really wanted to be president, isn't it.  Forty years of Democrat majority, isn't that what you wanted. Four more years of Obama in 2012?

Face it, we are locked in a room with millions of our fellow citizens that suffer from mild to advanced sociopathic displacement.

True Believers in socialism will tell you that implementation is the problem - no true system has been tied, that those in the past who claimed to be socialist are not.

Concurrently, advocates of social programs, social justice, progressives, will tell you that their goal is not socialism as defined by those who have tried it before.

Hmmm.

No clear difference in intent there, but at least the overt socialists are honest.
